Good shabu place. You order your meat and cook it in hot water. The place has really good sauces to dip your meat and vegetables in. They do have a policy that you cannot use your phone since the location is small and they do want people

This place never stops to amazed me. It's long wait and the not so cleam bathroom can be a easy turn-off. But, the once you sit and start putting your condiments in in your boiling pot in front of you, everything is forgiven. The quality of meat and constant service at your meal satisfies you completely. it's worth it.

Pros: Quality

Cons: The wait

.

The wait here sucks! ive been here a few times and the wait was over an hour. But when you finally get sat they rush you through your meal. But the meat is pretty good quality and real thinly sliced. Ponzu sauce is good too. But the vegetable plate is pretty sucky and the peanut sauce is bland. If the wait were shorter this spot would be better. Its just not worth the wait.

could be good.

Pros: like i said, i haven't tried it yet

Cons: well, ditto.

.

It really is great food and a fun atmosphere but you have to get there early! It's a very unique experience: you have to eat quick or you will feel like they are rushing you, going in a party of more than two-three guarantees a REALLY long wait or you wont be seated together. BUT still, the food is worth it. The owner is interesting, he will not argue with you if you don't hear your name- he will just rush you out! I go there pretty often and he recognizes me but I still get the same service. This place isn't about customer service so really keep that in mind. 5 STARS.

me and my co-worker signed in our names at 6:00, we have been waiting for 30 mins inside, the man never called our names. when we finally went to check that status, he stated he already called our names 20 mins ago. Now mind you he was raising his voice in front of the customers. as i went back to wait yet again, he escorted us out of the restaurant advising it was too full inside. We were sitting down in the waiting bench inside. So basicly he kicked us out!!! he must of been having a bad day to set him off, but he should not treat his customers so demeaning. I was a regular customer visiting almost 4xs a month. I WILL NEVER RETURN!!!

Pros: Amazing food

The service. The cleanliness. The food. Especially the food. I personally think that Shabu ShabuYo is a whole lot better than Shabu SHabu house. The serivce is fast, breezy, and friendly. This place is wayy cleaner than ShabuShabu house and there's lovely background music and airconditioning. The prices are around the same and the meat used at Shabu Shabu yo is very good quality. It's Black ANgus Ribeye. They also have pork, various salads, salmon ShabuShabu, and even a vegetarian Shabu Shabu. There really is no wait and instead of being seated around a dirty table, filled with a lot of people, there are actually SEATS and TABLES. However, becasue of it's location [Next to Pinkberry, Ebisu, and 2ndStreet Jazz] it's commonly ignored. But those people don't know what they're missing out on. The overall restauraunt is very comfortable and leaves you with a full stomach, a happy mind, and a satisfied smile.

SO I ALWAYS WALK BY THIS PLACE AND ITS ALWAYS BUSY SO I CHCKED IT OUT LAST WEEKENED. WAITED IN LINE FOR ABOUT 1.5 HOURS THEN WE WERE IN. AS FAR AS I CAN TELL YOU CAN ONLY ORDER ONE OF TWO ITEMS: 10 PIECES OF MEAT OR 15 PIECES OF MEAT. I WENT WITH THE BIGGER. THE FOOD IS GREAT AND SERVICE IS GOOD. IT WAS HOT IN THERE WHICH MADE ME FEEL A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE. THEY DONT HAVE AIR CONDITION. OTHER THAN THAT THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD. ID EAT THERE AGAIN FOR SURE A++

This is my favourite Shabu Shabu house. The only reason that it didn't get a 5 star is because the wait is so long, it's a first come first serve. However, with that being said, it is an authentic shabu shabu and worth the wait!

Don't come here when you are really hungry or have a time constraint. They do not take reservations either.

Shabu-shabu house opens at 11:30 AM and to be sure to get in on the first seating, you need to be there at 10AM.

That said, it is very good and very inexpensive.
Parking is in the Japanese Village Plaza, they validate for 2 hours, which can be taken up by the wait.

This place is the definition of popular.

Go here to have shabu, not to those chain restaurants. This is in the Japanese Village Plaza. It's small, so there's a long wait! People flock to this shabu house. I've even waited for almost 2 hours once, but it's all worth it!

I have been coming here since I was a kid in the 90's. This is the best shabu shabu that there is. I have tried the one on citywalk ( just one of the choices on a japanese menu), hollywood and highland and the one in sherman oaks and I must tell you it is the ponzu sauce that keeps me coming back. (They now have bottles which they sell for $5.50 each) Normally order a large and have never had to wait more than an hour cause I am familiar with how the flow of traffic is there during the week vs weekends. My only complaint is that many of the customers expect something totally different and would know better if they read up on shabu shabu (as well as proper etiquette when eating it). So my complaint is really about the clientele, not the restaurant. The service tends to be better in the evening, but since my family and I are regulars we always manage to get great service. I live in the Chatsworth area and still manage to make time to get there at least twice a month, more if my schedule accomadates.

Pros: It is the best shabu shabu in the greater los angeles area

Cons: the wait

This place isn't that great. Nothing special, don't know why people wait for this place. After eating this place, it made Ka Ga Ya super heavenly to go to.

I've been going to this restaurant for nearly a decade and it remains as my favorite place for Shabu Shabu. I've been to countless Japanese restaurants serving Shabu Shabu around LA, Orange and San Bernardino counties and nothing comes even close.

The secret is the choice beef and their legendary ponzu, which the owner cooks himself every evening. The ponzu recipe is so guarded that he doesn't even let his long time employees inside the kitchen while he makes it.

After years of frequenting this place, you become friends with the owner, staff and some of your co-addicts.
But one thing remains---they are strict with their "First Come- First Serve" rule. So come early, fill out the wait list, and do not wander around---for once your name is called and you're not there, you've lost your place in line.

But believe me, the wait is worth it.

Pros: Best Shabu Shabu in town!

Cons: 30 to an hour's wait time--but oh-so worth it.

.

They serve a small portion of vegetables compared to other places and a medium size order will not be enough for a man or a woman with a big appetite.
The joint is too too small for such an overly populated place...minimum waiting time during lunch is 45 min.
so the waiters are pushing to get you to finish as soon as possible and leave. They took my dish away when I was still eating and threw the check on the table, gave me a nasty attitude like 'I can't believe you're still eating!'
There isn't anything nice about this place, this place even smells bad.
I'm not going back, for sure.

delicious delicous delicous and highly addictive!!!
delicious thin sliced beef that you cook yourself with amazing dipping sauces, rice, and vegetables.
they have beer too.
the wait is ridiculous, but its so worth the wait because it just builds up your hunger and cravings for shabu shabu!

tip: if you wait inside instead of putting your name on the list and then shopping, they go around and take note of who is waiting so you might get a spot faster.

tip #2: it opens at 5:30 pm for dinner, but they put the list outside on a stool at like 4:00 pm. so if you live close, drive and add your name then come back at 5:30 sharp or a little before!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. They only serve one thing -- raw beef slices with a plate of raw vegetables that you boil in your own personal hotpot, dip in delicious sauces, and eat with rice. The beef is perfectly marbled and delicious. There are only two sauces -- ponzu and peanut -- but both are just scrumptious. There are also "accessories" you can throw into your hotpot or sauce bowl to liven up the flavors, including crushed garlic, pureed daikon, green onions, and hot chili oil. The guy in the apron is more than happy to offer suggestions on how to eat your food. Everyone has their own variations; some people throw everything into the hotpot and make a "soup"; some people like to combine the sauces; others like to dip the meat slices in the hotpot one by one. If you want to eat quickly, arrive at least 30-40 minutes before the restaurant opens and put your name on the list. Otherwise, expect to wait 45-90 minutes. (Although it's definitely worth the wait.) Also, to save money, go during lunchtime, where they serve the exact same food (and exact same portion sizes) for about 60% of the dinner price. Some are put off by the rushed service (they scoop up your plate and give you the check the moment you remove the last morsel from your plate), but the food is worth it.

The wait is long so put your name down ahead of time, but it's worth it. There are only 2 options on menu, the small size or the larger size plate of meat, and that's it. From there you sit and enjoy. Ask for lean meat if you are watching your weight. Also, it is a tiny place and the boiling water bowls get hot, so wear a tshirt and prepare to sweat.

I have a vice - restaurants. I love great food to a fault (since I'm not exactly a high roller). I've been coming here for years, as my taste has matured and my dining budget has gone up, and still nothing has ever held a candle to Shabu Shabu House - for price or mouthgasmness. The wait? It's long, but I'd wait twice as long - there is a reason for it. Just be careful if you have an addictive personality because it's that good.

BTW - don't listen to the blazer comment below - he's being cruel; Shabu Shabu House is closed on Mondays. (the hours listed seem to be outdated)

i have been coming here for about a year now and haven't found any better shabu shabu spots in LA. although the wait may seem long it's definitely worth the wait. it's best to go during lunch time because the prices are cheaper. the menu includes, beef, vegetables, beer and iced coffee (which i normally get). i'll add the red chili and chili oil directly to the meat, then i'll season the broth with garlic, both types of onions, red chili, and some soy sauce. i only use the ponzu sauce to which i add garlic, green onions and, the red chilli. after i finish cooking the meat i'll drop it in the ponzu for a few seconds to soak up some extra flavor. and when i'm done w/ all the meat and rice i'll add the extra ponzu sauce to the broth mix it for a bit then ask for an extra bowl and drink the broth. THIS PLACE IS THE BEST, GO HERE FIRST BEFORE YOU TRY ANY OTHER SHABU SHABU HOUSE. it's so good i'm planning on buying a shabu shabu hotpot one day

The wait is long, the decor is plain, and the menu selection is minimal ranging from beef to more beef. However, Shabu Shabu House offers the best shabu in LA. This place offers a really good quality shabu beef that cooks within seconds in the hotpot of boiling water and amazing ponzu sauce. You can order the beef as lean or extra lean cuts. You have a choice of large and extra large order of beef. If your still not full then you can order extra vegetable and extra order of beef to satisfy your appetite. If your looking for a value experience then go during lunch since the price is cheaper.

If you are looking for great food and an authentic Shabu experience then this is the place to be. For proof just check out the horde of hungry people waiting to be seated normally surrounding outside the restaurant. As a mill of efficiency there is no need to look for a host stand or a host. Just go in, sign your name on a clipboard with your order and wait to be called. There is metered parking on the street but parking can be a challenge. Parking in the garage is free with validation but you will have to prepay first.

Not only is the meat absolutely first-rate, the ponzu is fabulous and the people are friendly and efficient. The rest of Little Tokyo is fun to poke around in as well. Don't believe other people who tell you this place is overhyped! Just go at the right time and you can have yourself a delicious and relatively healthy meal!

I almost regret writing a review because this is my secret place. However, I had to respond to the negative reviews by people who don't enjoy waiting for their AMAZING meal. Us regulars know there is a wait and usually choose to make a day of it. Sign up for shabu, walk around the courtyard, visit shops, maybe some saki at the nearby sushi restaurant. What you get inside is organic beef, home-made ponzu sauce, and a no-frills delicious experience. You can order your meat regular or lean and can get extra meat, noodles, tofu, etc. whenever you choose (at dinner you get two different kinds of noodles). The list policy is strict but fair and is clearly written up on the wall of the Shabu Shabu house. If you want amazing, great quality food, this is the spot. Don't be timid, if you need something like extra sauce or a fork (some people will use them!), be persistant. The food is the key here, so enjoy!

LET ME TELL YOU...I WOULD NEVER WAIT 2 HOURS FOR ANYTHING...EXCEPT FOR THE EXPERIENCE AT THE SHABU SHABU HOUSE. THE MEAT IS UNBELIEVABLE...THE PONZU SAUCE IS MORE THAN PERFECT...THE SESAME SAUCE JUST TOPS IT OFF...AND THE VEGETABLES ARE ALWAYS FRESH...FROM THE VERY FIRST BITE UNTIL THE LAST IS JUST PERFECT...NOT ONLY CAN YOU COOK YOUR MEAT THE WAY YOU WANT IT BECAUSE YOU HAVE YOUR OWN POT BUT YOU CAN ALSO ADD MORE OR LESS FLAVOUR TO YOUR SOUP AND SAUCE! I CAN'T HAVE ANY OTHER SHABU SHABU BESIDES THE ONE AT SHABU SHABU HOUSE...TRUST ME...YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WON'T BE YOUR LAST!

On a recent vacation I took a blind chance and went to the Shabu Shabu House Resturant on a review from another website and the place rocks. For folks that don't know, shabu shabu is an odd cook your own food type of meal that prior to walking into the resturant I had never heard of, let alone done. The owner of the resturant came over, showed us how everything worked and what spices to use and exactly how to do everything. In the end the meal was SPECTACULAR and the service was friendly and inviting. As a white guy sometimes you feel like an outcast in an asian resturant but this was pretty much the exact opposite experience.

I'm recommending this place to anyone who will listen.

Parking is free if you use the mall lot, but you have to prepay and then get reimbursed your $3. Strange.

Yup, there is a long wait, but believe me, it's worth it. And the scores of loyal patrons can attest to that. If this is your first time to try shabu shabu, this is the perfect place here in LA. I've tried other shabu shabu plces here in the west coast and internationally and ShabuShabu House is at par with the best. Just bear in mind the wait time and treat yourself to some imagawayaki in the nearby store while waiting. But be ready for when your name is called, your group must be present or you will be skipped. Hint: To lessen the wait, be there 30 minutes before they open (5:30 pm). They usually leave a sign-in sheet out front. FYI: They are closed on Mondays.

Pros: Authentic Shabu Shabu, Wonderful Ponzu, Great Coffee

Cons: Long Wait

.

Great place to eat if you don't mind having to wait an hour plus to be seated. And even if your name is on the list, there's still a chance you will be skipped. Poor customer service, food quality is about average. I would only recommend trying Shabu just for the experience.

DON'T TRY THIS IF YOU REALLY WANT TO EAT SHABU SHABU... BAD SERVICE, TO LONG TO WAIT AND BAD FOOD (ESPECIALLY ITS MEAT SAUCE).

Waiting time is like 1-2 hours!!! That is CRAZY!

WILL NOT GOING TO EAT AGAIN.

I AM NOT JOKING HERE!!!!!

i agree w/ the comment below on the Ponzu sauce. it's nothing spectacular, very plain. the garlic needs to be fresh and there's no SATAY to make the sauce thicker. the meat is decent but my fav shabu place offers THREE kinds of beef, along with chicken, pork, seafood and three kinds of Kobe Beef as well. so i would say this place is nothing special. maybe for LA but nothing to hoot about. i cannot believe we waited 1.5hrs for this mediocre experience. the side of veggies is lacking. i can only compare since i've had MUCH better, sorry.

Pros: decent meat, fair price

Cons: lacking in sauce, small veggie portion, long wait

The meat is good but the sauce is not good enough, too light. There is always waiting line after 7pm... I guess because it is relatively cheap..$11-13 per order. The overall value is acceptable.

Best shabu shabu restaurant I've been to. Go there early and put yourself on the waiting list BEFORE it opens for dinner or you'll find yourself waiting for up to an hour or more to get a seat! It's that popular!

This is the best shabu shabu in the entire Los Angeles county, and I've been to lots of them. The ponzu sauce that goes with the beef is amazing. The beef is very good also. You can request lean or fat upon your request. My girlfriend and I have been loyal customers for almost 2 years now and we go there 2 to 3 times a week during winter and once every week during summer. The waiters/waitresses are responsive and provide fast and good service. They refill your rice, ponzu and whatever condiment you need right after you ask for them.

The wait time is as long as the food is delicious. You might wanna bring a book to read. :) As a courtesy, you should leave as soon as you are finished because of the numerous people that are always waiting.

Beware, their food is heavenly addicting! I've been a customer since the late 90s and never fail to drop in every week. And I'm not alone--this restaurant has a devoted following. The ponzu sauce is authentic, even better than those I've tasted in Japan! The service is fast and friendly. I often chat with the owner while dining, and he explains that he himself prepares the secret ponzu recipe afterhours. The ucc iced coffee compliments the meal.

How good is it? My girlfriend and I once pondered whether we should move to another state, but changed our mind realizing that couldn't leave behind the shabu shabu house.

and oh, for the first timers: it's an acquired taste. on your first time you might find it "just ok". but come back the next week, and your taste buds will rejoice. at that time, you'll be hooked!

This is one of the best food deals not just in L.A. but in the USA! There are cheaper places around the neighborhood but go here for the best shabu shabu around.

You will likely wait for one of the 28 seats but this is part of the experience as your appetite will grow as you sit and wait and watch others eating their shabu shabu. The sauces are authentic and they will eagerly refill your sauces dish upon request.

I've been going here for several years & it seems to have a cult following. Nearly always a long line to get in for one of the 28 seats. There are just a few choices, but the ingredients are always fresh, which makes all the difference. The staff is highly efficient and there's no lingering over your iced coffee or tea at the end of the meal. Maximum counter time is 35minutes, but it's fun, clean, pleasant.

The best food I've eaten in J-town! If I could, I would eat here every night. The food is so great that there is a line out the door to be seated. There are many international guests that dine here too. It is known for being the best shabu shabu in L.A. (get there early). The staff tries to keep everyone moving along by serving guests and then making sure they leave right away. Don't expect to sit and chat at this little joint. But definitely go! Also, the service is pretty good. Everyone is attentive; although, they don't speak very much. But, don't let that intimidate you; they will definitely help out any first timer. So go, eat, and enjoy the food and experience. Also, make sure you stop by the little ice-cream and pastry shop a few doors down for green tea ice-cream or mochi after.
