I am a female who was physically assaulted by an unknown male patron at Amigo's. I was pushed out of my chair kicked and stomped countless times as well as punched in my face. There were two bartenders, the owner and several other staff. The restaurant and bar were very full that evening. Not one person stepped in to help me or called 911. When I was finally able to get up from the floor, I asked the bartender, VICTOR to call 911, he responded that he was too busy. I asked him a second time only to receive the same response. I had to call the police myself from my cell phone.

This place is small and somewhat quiet. Its a combination of Mexican restaurant and Canteena. The service I've received had been particularly exceptional, at least on the restaurant side. I love shrimp, and the 1st time I went there I didn't find anything to my liking. However when I asked the waiter about shrimp tacos he was more than happy to ask the chef custom-cook one for me. I found that impressive and quite customer service oriented. The menu honestly is quite small, the taste selective-not everything was delectable. The servers can sometimes be slow due to the restaurant being understaffed. The atmosphere is average, it does give you that feeling of being in Mexico though. The price is also average. A warning - the rest rooms needs attention at all times. Parking is very limited, both on the lot and streets. The canteena gets crowded mostly during happy hours and weekends, people can get somewhat loud and a bit rowdy. The drinks are average, both price and taste wise. The service on that side ranges from poor to average. The crowd are mostly matured individuals, definitely not a place to look for prospective dates.

Pros: Accomodates special dishes not in menu

Cons: Too quiet on the restaurant side, much too rowdy on the bar side

I'm stunned by the bad experiences these reviewers have had. We have been going to Amigo's regularly for over five years based on a neighbor's recommendation (we see her there all the time - if she's not already with us). What will count the most, though, is that we've brought friends with us from all over the country who enjoy the food & the unusual atmosphere. Those from Los Angeles go back often on their own (we get mad when they don't invite us but catch them there!)

I'll also make no bones about it - this is a 'hole in the wall / local hangout' - you will see familiar faces if you go back a few times. The wait staff can definitely be goofy (including the older guy) but are typically very nice and attentive including the manager who looks out for the regulars.

What's also different is that the food is prepared 'short order' style - so it is typically hot and fresh. Sure the rice and beans leave something to be desired but focus on the meats, sauces, and homemade tamales. Unlike El Cholo which serves food from bins - you will usually find the meats juicy and marinated and the taco shells and tortilla chips crunchy and fresh. The salsa is also homemade & is excellent.

The best thing about the restaurant is the pricing. Look at the Specials Board and you might find shrimp diabla or fajitas for $8.95. Also be daring and try the soup (a little salty) or some of the more traditional Mexican dishes. The burritos are big.

Warning though: The margaritas (order Cadillac for more flavor) are sweet and STRONG. One will give you a buzz; two will send you to tomorrow... be careful!

OK - I am writing this review (not typical for me) mainly because I don't think the restaurant has gotten a fair shake. Don't go out of your way to go there - but bring a group, hang out, enjoy the "Pulp Fiction"-like environment (including cheesy tunes on the jukebox) and RELAX.

Again, this is a hole in the wall - go in with the right attitude and be rewarded.

Pros: great homemade burritos, tamales, main dishes; friendly fast service; cheap eats; mixed crowd

Cons: locals can get boisterous; occasional off-nights; bathrooms need attention

First off, the place is dark and usually empty (for a good reason) when there are people there they are generally large, loud groups. The service is bad, the waiters and waitresses are rude and neglected to refill my water glass on several occasions, my boyfriend ordered a margarita and was served a virgin one but charged full price ($7.50). He complained and they corrected it. The food was served floating in its own grease, and was generally horrible. There are tons of good Mexican restaurants in Pasadena and the surrounding areas, there is no point in wasting your time or money on this one. Go elsewhere, I know I will from now on.

Being of Mexican decent, this experience was very disappointing. The service was slow and the waiter (looked like he was past retirement age) was very rude. The food was horrible, especially the Carne con Chile Verde (Pork with Green Sauce). The sauce looked like it was made yesterday a reheated today. The rice was hard in texture and had no flavor at all. As for the music, it sounded like it came off a soundtrack from a cheesy stereotypical Mexican movie that was made for Americans only. Lastly, as we walked in, there were no other patrons in the restaurant. Only a few people at the bar. That should've given us a clue about this place. The only thing that was good was the price. Needless to say, I will not be going back nor recommending this Mexican restaurant to anyone.

Right around the corner is this little local hang out the outside it seems a little run down and the inside is not impressive, but the food is amazing. They have large portions and average prices. I could not finish my meal. The sangria was really good. The service was mediocre i have had better. I will go back for the food!

my roommate and i walked to this place one Friday after work. We were surprised to find we had been missing out on some terrific Mexican food. we split the pollo burrito with red sauce, rice and beans. it was sooo good and soooo big. we couldn't even finish it between us! the meal came with the expected chips and salsa. the salsa was really good-- pretty spicy. it was tasty. the chips seemed a little stale, but with great salsa, they were OK. the second basket of chips we received were much better. the sangria and margaritas are fantastic and pretty strong. go there for dinner. if you stay too late, people in the bar get their liquid confidence and may start hitting on you. The girls are particularly forward-- especially if you are a girl too.... :/

Nice neighborhood bar and restaurant where it is often dimly lit and service is fast. Their free salsa is delicious and made in-house. We like the Crystl Special (shrimp and cheese enchilada) and Chile Colorado Special! The quesadillas are good too. Other than that, the choices are a bit bland and predictable. You can watch a game on tv while you eat.

PROS: late hours with full menu
CONS: don't offer very spicy foods
