i loved going here! i transfered from marinello because i hated the teachers admin and price i was paying there (like over 17,000 bucks!) . Hair california was much better! I graduated from hair california a few months ago and just passed the california state board liscensing exam for cosmetology. i liked this school very very much i went full time and graduated in ten months. i graduate confident and ready for state board as well as going to work in a salon.

I graduated from the Esthetician program in 2009. I agree with all of the other reviews in that the owner is very greedy and is pretty much out there to get your money. Although the instructors are extremely unorganized they do a good job in implanting how to pass stateboards in you! You do the same things over and over until you are so bored and can do specific treatments with your eyes closed. I must say however that if you are serious about pursuing a career in esthetics much of what you will do will require hard work, discipline, patience, and the desire to succeed. This school is fine for those who do not want to spend a lot of money and just want to have a basic foundation of the industry. Its pretty much up to you and what you want to do with it after you get licensed!

i graduated from this school and i just passed state board. i had to practice a lot but this place was fun. it cast me $10,560 and ten months for my cosmetology certificate but it was completely worth it. other school make you completely teach yourself but this one makes you practice and u actually get prepared to pass the state board liscensing exam. this school also helped me pay my tuition by helping me apply for a federal grant that paid more than half my tuition!

if your thinking about going to this school its the worst. i recently switched schools cause the owner is a money hungry rat who tried to get paid with my grant and my fee wavier at the same time. yeah, theyre a cheap school, but you have to pay for everything you need separately from the tuition, so it all adds up to about the some as it would for a good school that teaches you everything. this school is a state board only teaching school (they only "teach" you what you need to pass and get your license) this being said. when i went out on the floor where you actually do clients i got a flattop and had to do it with no supervision all though i begged the teacher to help (posting on the door says "work done under supervision of instructors..B.S!!) i was sweating doing this guys flattop. instructor on the floor is a racist mexican lady who said "you dont understand, i hate the black people" her and the owner are all about their favorite students and treat everyone else like poop. if you go to this school you MUST teach yourself out of the milady book or else you will never understand anything. they dont teach you color except for how to apply it but as far as mixing you have to take their $150 color classes. the makeup is 99cent store makeup and the kit they give you for $1200 is crap. your better off buying everying on your own. (but they dont allow that, you have to buy her kit cause she makes it for about 500 and sells it to you for way more) the owner is a piece of work she pretends to be nice untill you start and then shes screaming at everyone for stupid things. the nice lady in the freshman room is the best. shes so sweet, its so sad that the other instructors treat her like a 90yr old with alzheimers. ms ann is the theory teacher although she seems a little bipolar sometimes shes a great teacher whose actually willing to teach you. i had to give this school at least one point for the two teachers who actually help you out at this school. if your still going to this school because of financial reasons be prepared to teach yourself everything, stay on the teachers good side, bring ms maria some tamales. theres more scandlous stuff about this school but ill have to write that novel another time...ps i was told from people who work at the college that they are trying to detach themselves from this place. GOOD LUCK!
If your looking to go to get your hair done, make sure you get a senor who has more that 1200 hours. they put students out on the floor at 400 hours without teaching them everything..if you dont like how your hair comes out the instructors will be rude and try to "fix it" but really just want to mess it up even more. And they make you pay before you get your services so that you cant get your money back.
i went to this school from feb-october 2009 and theyve had more than 3 teachers fired. they are so unorganized at this place.

I attend this school, and am not suprised at the reviews it has recieved. The owner is a money hungry, well, b*tch.. The prices are outrageous for a school. The owner actual takes time to teach us ways to squeeze as much money out of a person as we can. We are also REQUIRED to try to upsell, which I find ridiculous.
The instructors RARELY supervise students who are working on actual clients. You might get lucky and get someone who knows what they're doing, or you might get someone who really doesn't care and doesn't want to be doing anything other than standing around and will rush to get you out of there as quickly as possible.
Oh, and the shampoo we use is cheaper than suave, and the conditioner is watered down.
I hate to discourage people from coming here, as I definitely appreciate the practical experience, but I really would suggest trying to find somewhere else first.

I agree with the other reviews. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the front desk manager was outright rude and unfriendly! Very poor example of customer service...I wonder if the owner of the school realizes. I hate this place because of the way you feel when you walk out the door...very dissatisfied and feeling like you got ripped off.

Same experience for me. Pushy trying to upsell me services I didn't need and more expensive than needs be. For crying out loud these are students trying to get practical experience on us guinea pigs.
Manager should be a better example of customer service and courtesy.
I hope the students don't imitate their manager.

i thought beauty schools were suppose to be cheap. obviously this place, a beauty school, does not see itself as a beauty school because it charges at a professional rate. which i was really suprised at. the quality of the hair and products that they used are ok but these people are only students. i don't think a hair cut should be charged the same price when it is done by a student in training as compared to a professional. i was a little bitter when i left the place and i really don't recoomend this place because it's way over priced for a beauty school.

This place will rip you off when it is only a beauty school. They tried to charge me $25 to get my shoulder length hair curled, $12 if I wanted it just straightened, and $8 to just blowdry! The lady will look at you and think you are naive, and try to inflate prices for her own profit. The students don't receive any part of the profit because they are learning and you are their subjects. It's a great deal if you're willing to argue with the manager.

This school is more trouble than it's worth! I thought because of it's association with Santiago Canyon College it would be professional and respectful to the students. Not at all!!! That place is so unorganized it is pathetic. They lose timesheets all the time but they do "fix" hours for certain students. In other words, they give hours for the special elite students so they can graduate early. To top it off, the owner is always going into these rages screaming at us and threatening to expel us. So when the owner is not screaming, she is always telling us how broke she is. Who want's to hear that? Also, we are constantly being charged fees. If it's not for scan trons, its classes, then office fees. They need to explain these things to us when we start school. Since students answer the phones, we learned that bill collectors are calling and the owner has borrowed money from people (students parents, ex-students) and she is not paying them back. They were calling the school to try to get her to respond to their messages. What a snake. She fixes paperwork so if a student goes to the college to complain she creates paperwork so she wins. Come on Santiago, why do you want to be associated with someone like her. There are plenty of complaints about this school, do something about it. As for the teachers, Ms. Ann is bi-polar. There are times that she is kind but watch out, most of the times she is rude, pounds the book on the podium, never has the time to answer questions and we don't have anyone else to go to. Bottom line, if you want a professional environment so you can learn, DONT come to this school.
I write this review as a past student of Hair California. Corrupt - Corrupt - Corrupt. Highly suspicious of administration (director) and feel school should be investigated. You learn very little here, it's up to you to read and teach yourself. I, thank heavens, passed state board but would give only a smudge of credit to this school. It's unorganized and shady. They've LOST student hours for goodness sake! The director, who at first charms you as a sweet foreign vietnamese woman, is a snake in the grass and criminal. It's only a matter of time before her horns come out and you see the deciet she embodies. Avoid enrollment if possible, trust me. Ask any past/current student and you'll be hard-pressed to find positive response.
