It does not get any fresher or better than this. If you eat tofu out of box or package that you get at the grocery store-then you have to go to SJ Tofu-I guarantee you won't go back. It is made fresh every morning and although I have never experience it, they can run out. They only have the 1 variety which is considered soft-so you can't get silken or firm-will have to stick with the package in that case-but why?

This is definitely the best place to get your tofu. It is so fresh, and soft. Once you eat this tofu, you will NEVER go back to the packaged tofu from safeway or other stores.
5Tiny place but the best tofu we have ever tasted. They actually run out of tofu sometimes. Next door Gombei uses their fresh tofu in many of their dishes and those are excellent too. We use them in noodles, stir fries or soups. But just plain with soy sauce is also yummy!

San Jose Tofu is an institution in Japantown. Many years ago when I was attending SJSU, we would pick up blocks of fresh tofu here. Now I endeavor to stop there whenever I am in the south bay. The shop is tiny with a small selection of Japanese groceries to one side. The tofu is sold in a couple of varieties (firm, silken) in blocks. Sometimes it is still warm and just out of the frame. There is no comparison to packaged tofu sold in the grocery store to the real deal sold here. My favorite way of eating it is with hot rice and tsukemono (pickled veggies) on the side and the fresh tofu with shoyu (soy sauce) as the 'entree.'
