Overview
As a Carneros District producer, this winery focuses on wines that grow well in foggier coastal climates, with pinot noir being foremost among them. As a wine-maker originally from Germany's Rhine Valley, the owner of this family-run winery has built a reputation on his European-style wines, exhibiting high acidity and little of the pronounced oak that's so predominant in California wines. This character apparently pleases many Europeans, as about a third of Schug's wine is exported to Europe. The rest, however, is available for tasting at the Sonoma headquarters.

Features
The diminutive tasting room in this post-and-beam-style facility provides wine samplings daily, and tours are available daily by request. In addition to the two Carneros and Reserve pinot noir bottlings, Schug also offers a sparkling pinot noir that'll add a little fizzy zip to your glass.

Off of the beaten path, but well worth visiting this winery. The wine selections to be tasted were wonderful and the staff very willing to answer all questions. A must visit when in the wine country!

Pinot Noir Specialists

by Brooke S. | top100 Top100 | Rank: 95

Schug Winery is family owned by the Schug's who immigrated from Germany many years ago. They are located in an ideal climate for Pinot to thrive so along side of Walter's outstanding wine making abilities, they create award winning wine year after year. I absolutely love this winery's Pinot, they also make a great Sauvignon Blanc, perfect for summer porch sipping pleasure. They also carry outstanding Chardonnay, Cabernet and Merlot.

good times

by kimberlynpeter

what a great place. stumbled across schug after taking a drive through the quaint town of glen ellen.
this was back on the last weekend of jan '08, an absolute monsoon of a weekend. we were celebrating the wife's birthday. the two men hosting the tasting were both entertaining and informative. the wines were fantastic. a memorable experience. we have made a point to seek their pinot noir's and chardonnay's once we returned to chicago. celebrating our anniversay mid-august '08 and will definately return to schug to enjoy the winery in the late summer season and hopefully taste a new release or two. or possible indulge in an '05 pinot and check out the duck pond, herb garden and picnic area, as well as the fantastic view. on a clear day try to spot mt diablo. comfortable and unpretentious. enjoy.

Pros: you'll have a good time too

great location, intimate tasting room, picnic area

by newenglandtransplant

This is a great spot. When you turn on Bonneau Rd. keep driving until you go through the gates and up the hill. There you'll find a quaint tasting room without all of the hustle and bustle of other tasting rooms. You're surrounded by rolling hills so the scenery is very picturesque. There are cave tours avaialble but we didn't take one. The wines are Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays the cool climate at Schug is ideal for growning the grapes. They also have a picnic area for eating, drinking and relaxing.

Pros: picnic area, beautiful scenery, great wine
