SLOW service, RUDE Waiter

by jenr123

My fiance and I decided to try this place for lunch today. We arrived at 2:30 just in time for the lunch special. We were greeted by a grumpy host who took us to a booth without place settings. He never brought them - we had to walk over and ask when our salads came. There were only 3 diners in the restaurant at the time, so it was not busy. The couple behind us ordered about 5 minutes before we did, and they ordered the exact same thing as us: Chicken Korma and Chicken Tikki Masala. The difference is, they got their entrees in about 15 minutes, and we waited 55 minutes. We were just about to walk out when rude Indian waiter brought our food. The galling thing was, we watched him serve entrees to two different couples who had come in 30 minutes after us. After we had been waiting for 20 minutes, I asked if I could change my order to white meat. Rude Indian Waiter gave me a dirty look and said, "It's too late." Then we waited another 35 minutes. He never came to check on us, to tell us what was taking so long, or anything. When it FINALLY arrived, the food itself was good, except I detest dark meat, so I just ate rice, naan and Korma sauce. My fiance and I both noticed Rude Indian Waiter's demeanor change as it was time to get the check and box the food. He suddenly became kinder and more efficient. Needless to say, I won't be back. There are other places in LA with great Indian food that treat customers better.

Pros: food is good

Cons: waiter was rude, inattentive. Food took an hour to come out.

I have been a regular at Gate of India ever since I moved to Hollywood 4 years ago. This is my goto place for heartwarming Indian food. My usual Chicken Sag and Peshwari Naan.

Great price, amazing food, lots of vegetarian options, HUGE portions.

by zatanna

My friends ordered from this place for take-out one night, and I made the mistake of not ordering anything for myself! The food was so delicious I ended up mooching off of everyone else's plates. I finally had the chance to try it again tonight, and the food is even better than I remember. The menu is huge, including a great selection for vegetarians. There was so much to choose from so I just played it safe and ordered vegetable masala, samosas, and garlic naan. Everything was amazing, down to the sauces and rice served on the side. The owner gave me my order and he was very friendly. The restaurant is deceptively nice inside considering it's location (inside a strip mall). I can't wait to go back to try some of the other menu items. Highly recommended!

Pros: Food, Service, Prices

Cons: Parking a bit tight in the strip mall

We loved it

by LAFoodster

We were recommended this place by friends. Being from NY, we love Indian food and we really enjoyed it. Got basic stuff, samosas, Chicken Tikka Masala, Paneer Korma. Nice flavor . Tried other joints in the neighborhood, this was definitely the best. We will recommend it to others.

Pros: food, service, value priced

Cons: Parking

what a joke, forget the reviews

by toastedonfire

Was craving good (at least good) indian food and as "best of 2008", how can we go wrong? Drove one and half hours just to get there, waisted soo much time in traffic. So, we had to take out instead of eating in (long drive back). Got home, opened the boxes and realized that for $53 we got old wormed up left overs from lunch or probably that lunch buffet ($6.99!!). For $53 they did not bother to cook our food fresh! Hard overcooked meats that we could't swallow, dry shriveled up okra, chewy gummy breads, flavorless spinach and so on. We are not hard critics, eat pretty much all kinds of foods and love it, but this time... our worst of 2008. Economy in this bad shape, they are not going to have a customers for long (may be food was bad for take outs only) Who would want to pay full price for leftovers? Shame, shame. Highly UNrecommended.

Pros: nicely decorated ceilings

Cons: food was NOT fresh, left overs from lunch (or day before!)

OVER RATED

by jayjroy

So over rated! Who writes these reviews... seriously?

First off I'm Indian, so I know good food. I went there Tuesday night with my family and the food was above average, but definitely not the best. I asked the waiter, "As first time customers what would your recommend". He replied, "Everything is good" and walked away.

The service was terrible! There were three other groups at this restaurant, it was dead! And some how it took 35mins for our apps (tandori hot wings = good) and then another 20 mins for our food. Finally we were done and waited 20 mins for our check. I eventually went up to the front to get him to bring out check.

Final Results: Above average food, poor poor service, stoned waiter (very dumb), small portions, decent price.

Hope this helps!

THEY HAVE A "B" RATING ON THEIR WINDOW. THATS GROSS!

Pros: Price, Average Food

Cons: Service, Service, Service and portions

Delicious, fast service, great catering option.

by ravendreamer

I used to live in Hollywood and would frequent the restaurant on a weekly basis. Once I moved away, I missed them terribly. One day, I decided to order from Gate of India for our company luncheon in Downtown. Robin helped me with my order and it was so much high end food for 12 people at an unbelievable price. My boss was impressed and I scored major brownie points. Thanks Robin! :-) My favorites are the Tikka Masala, Aloo Matar, Vegetable Biryani, and the Peshwari Naan which is bread stuffed with a blend of coconut, raisins, almonds and cashews.

Pros: Tasty Food. Quality in Quantity.

Cons: Parking is tricky.

Your average Indian restaurant.

by senbonzakurakageyoshi

I'm really into Indian food and curries and this place has simply average curries in my taste. The curries were pretty standard, the flavor wasn't spectacular but its not the worst I've had. However, there was one curry that we ordered (Forgot the name) but it tasted like a combination of alfredo sauce and tomatoes.

The decor was also quite standard for an Indian restaurant, they could probably do a little more than what is there. The Christmas lights that were up and turned on looked pretty out of place considering the feel of the restaurant. Our waiter was pretty nice, and answered all our questions about the food. We went on a Thursday night around 7-8ish and it was pretty empty, parking was pretty easy to find.

Pros: Service and parking was excellent

Cons: Food is only about average, but I'm pretty picky.

My twice a month treat

by FoodsterOC

My friends and I meet up at this place atleast twice a month for our girls night out. This is a great place for catching up and chatting over great food and wine. We really enjoy the food and the indian ice cream that tops it off. The staff has been very courteous, sometimes if we are running late, we just call ahead and give them our food choices before we arrive.

Pros: Tasty food, friendly environment, Nice staff

Cons: Wish it was close to OC

Best Indian food I've had ever

by moonchild81

This place knocks my socks off every time I go. And every time I've gone, I've tried something different. Large portions, everything is fresh and made to order. The service is great and their hours of operation are awesome, as they are open regular hours even on Christmas Day! Indian food just doesn't get any better than this.

Pros: great for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, garlic naan is good with everything, large portions, great for groups who like to share food

Cons: parking may be limited on some nights but walking (if you live nearby) is worth the effort

Best of the best

by riaji

love it...love it...love it. Food is cooked to order, so tell em how you want it baby. Dont be shy. They ask you if you how spicy you want your food....its on the menu....just tell em. To all those people complaining about bland food, order the more daring dishes on the menu. This place has the most accomodating staff and they customize dishes for my picky roommate all the time. Ive eaten up and down the East and West coastline and never seen any place better.

Pros: great food cooked to order, great staff

Cons: mmmm....dont know

Fantastic Indian Cuisine

by montenegro

Gate of India has a fantastic atmosphere, delicious food, and stellar service. It's everything you'd want from Indian cuisine at a very affordable price. I often go with a group of fellow college students and we never have to pinch pennies to enjoy our dinner. To top it all off, you'll catch a celebrity sighting if you're lucky. Justin Timberlake was in the restaurant the night we were there and we learned that he frequents the place quite often. Highly recommended.

Pros: Ambience, Food, Service, Butter Chicken!

Cons: Parking, Get's Busy

Bland food, great staff

by miss_shortcake

I moved down the street so I thought I'd give the place a try. The staff is very pleasant and the place is clean. Unfortunately, the food was very bland. I ordered a salty lassi that was very thin and not very seasoned. I am used to thicker more savory versions. I also ordered the vegetable korma. The korma itself was still cold (not even tepid) inside. The sauce was warm at least. I had also asked for it to be spiced "Indian medium" and not American medium. It was still very mild for my taste. The rice was fine. I could taste the burlap sack it came in, which is something that happens if the rice isn't rinsed well before cooking. Perhaps I just had bad luck and ate on a strange day. The soup was pleasant, but nothing to rave over. I at least liked the papadam and the naan. Both were very good.

The place itself was nearly empty for a Wednesday night at 6 PM. This is usually a bad sign for a place. I think I won't be going back. However, they were super pleasant and I could see if someone wants more Americanized Indian food then this will suit their needs. I just like mine more authentic.

Pros: parking, nice staff, no wait, clean, nice decor, lots of veggie options

Cons: bland food

excellent menu and service

by adrian_canaris

I've only ever ordered delivery from this place, but I've tried many Indian places around LA and this is one of the places I return to frequently. The menu has a good selection of everything, and I've never ordered anything that disappointed me. Gate of India has especially good Kormas, in my opinion, but everything is good.

Once I ordered delivery and it took two hours for some reason. The manager was more than willing to set things right and more than made up for it, though. Prices are reasonable. I highly recommend.

Pros: menu selection, quality, service, pretty much everything

Cons: somewhat slow delivery time, but not terrible

EXCELLENT!!!

by dlisenkov

Absolutely perfect. Everything we ordered tasted great! We had spinach samosas, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, vegetable makhani, naan and plain rice. The spices were just right, medium-mild. We ordered plain naan, but it was anything but plain, with its dough flavored with herbs and spices. The samosas were made with light, crispy and THIN dough. The main dishes were fragrant and perfectly prepared. They also have very good Indian beer. The service was welcoming, prompt, friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back! P.S. They also deliver.

Pros: Food, Service, Parking

Cons: None

not that great

by monaggggg

this place is nice if need a quick bite and dont mind the tacky decor , but that aside the food is not that great like the other review sugest . The food is typical not that great , i would compare it to dennys to have a burger . The serivce is ok , the waiter was not helpful in recommending any dishes . Instead he gave a uncomfortable vibe . I think the reviews are not made by real customers , they are no where near the truth !!!! So if u want a quick not very tasty bite of indian food then welcome to gate of india

The best I've ever had, after six visits over six months...

by spiffylady

I never thought that I would find Indian food of this calibre in a strip mall on Sunset, but find (and savor) I did indeed. The food is absolutely by far the best I've had: the coconut chicken curry and tikka lamb... I just ate my leftovers for lunch and thought, I HAVE to share this with people. The staff is nice, the place is a little strange on the decor--kind of dark colors for my tastes--but heck, I'm not a designer and it's not a big deal--anyway, if you like flavorful sauces and incredible taste, try it out. I've eaten a lot of Indian food and this is consistently the best. It's so good, I'm considering asking them to let me pay to watch them cook so I can learn how to create these dishes at home, on demand. I'm telling you, I doubt that you will be disappointed.

Pros: Excellent flavor, fresh, fresh tastes... nothing prepared too long in advance...

Cons: I doubt I could ever be satisfied with my own attempts to recreate these dishes.

oh yes it the best !

by foodjeenie

This place has the best.....none of that watered down "americanized indian" food. If you can handle the BEST then this is the place for you....These guys don't try to sell you fusion food. If you order Chicken Tikka Masala and Sag Paneer, then thats what you get....you wont get some spiced Paneer or Masala Paneer. Indian food as it is, thats it...Some of my friends cant handle spicy food and they asked for their food to be cooked mild...no fuss there...they got it mild. Most good Indian restaurants cook the food to order, so it does take about 20 minutes to cook the Tandoori dishes.....so the previous review is not fair....we have gone to Gate of India for years and the food and service is unmatchable. My husband has recommended this place to several clients and never fails, they love it too. We absolutely love it. I will say it again, Lamb chops and Sag paneer are to die for.

Pros: food and the people

Cons: none that come to mind

why?why?why? is this place rated so high? tell me why!!

by conglover

I was so excited to visit this place after reading these rave reviews. When I arrived at Sunset Blvd and as I was getting closer to 7300 Sunset Blvd my mouth was watering from the images created by these reviews. I went there starving. When I got to there, there was a party of eight waiting furiously for their food. We ignored the bad omen and ordered vegetable Samosa to start out. Vegetable Samosa was very delicious. Then we ordered the chef special lamb chops (one of the review said the they are to die for), Chicken Tikka Marsala and Saag Paneer (from all of the 24 reviews I read about this place Saag Panner was mentioned four times to be the best!), Mango Chutney (I was surprised that I actually had to pay money for this), Garlic Naan, Cheese Naan and Onion Naan. I don't know what was happening in the kitchen but it took such a long time for the food to be out!!! No wonder so many people to go or do deliver. I was agitated but I still trusted the reviews. Then after the long wait our food came out. The lamb chops were okay but definitely not to die for! I'd say it was a little dry and salty. Chicken Tikka Marsala..was just average it was obvious that the chicken was not high quality because it was hard and not juicy and the curry sauce was just too average....so mad..so mad..was expecting so much better. Then THE Saag Paneer. It was delicious..but not too great..you know what I'm saying? just good enough that you keep eating but not the one your tongue keeps calling for. Paneer itself didn't have the deep taste I always look for in paneer. Nans didn't meet my expectation either. Maybe I went to this place with too high expectation. I really love Indian Food but I would never go back to this place again. I can't believe I drove an hour just for that! People should try some real Indian Food!. I recommend The Indian Restaurant in Artesia or in Irvine. Then you'll never go back to Gate of India again. Just average at best

Pros: parking

Cons: average food, long wait for the food.

Going, or "gone" downhill

by mhb1954

I have to rescind my previously "excellent" rating of this restaurant. It's gone downhill. The past few dinners were not very remarkable, and in fact, the food was below average. Dull, flavorless, uninspriring. What a disappointment. And last night, the food was just "blah." Nothing to entice me to come back. Even more disappointing was my beverage: I was served beer that was past its "best by" date by almost five months! The replacement beer, an Indian beer, was dated "Nov 06." I questioned this. The owner said that this is the date of bottling, and the beer is still good. Well, I'm no beer expert, but beer that's almost three years old, to me, seems somewhat odd. Nice people and attentive service, but in the end... gravity takes its toll on this place, so to speak. Down, down, down...

Pros: Friendly staff

Cons: Mediocre food and stale beer...

Best Indian food in Los Angeles...and maybe the United States!

by danthegirl

My first experience with this restaurant was delivery.....arrived at the door in 30 mins by a nice Indian-looking man in a suit, driving a souped-up SUV. Food was amazing. I ordered again two nights later (after the left-overs were done).

My husband came back to town two nights later, and I dragged him to the restaurant (he hated Indian before this), and now we are there at least once a week. (And now he loves Indian food!)

Since then, we have visited several Indian restaurants in the Hollywood/WEHO/Beverly Hills area, and this is by far the BEST!!! The food does not leave you feeling heavy, the price is great (usually $35-40 per couple with beer, samosas, 2 entrees, garlic nan, raita, rice), the waiters are nice, they are open late, and you can always get a table. I have taken several of our friends there, and if you can get over the strip mall and the Polish disco next door (on the weekends), then you will not be disappointed whatsoever.

Our personal favorites are(please excuse the spelling): vegetable samosas, sag paneer, chicken bhuna, butter chicken, the lentil chicken dish, lamb tika masala, limb tika, raita, and the kingfisher beer.

Pros: The food!!!

After reading all of the reviews here, I decided to go give it a try. There were four of us total. Since it was a Thursday the restaurant was pretty empty. The food was really good. Gate to Heaven

by geeyoo

They really know what they're doing at the Gate... we ordered the lamb chops that the waiter recommended and it was tender and juicy with just the right spices. The curry was so rich in flavors, I have never had such flavorful curry and I usually order curry whenever I can in any culture that offers it. Great service, nice ambience, but the food is really the star.

Despite its strip mall location the restaurant actually has extremely nice decor. The service was wonderfully attentive and the waiters were very nice and pleasant. Our drink glasses were never empty! The tandoori chicken was flavorful and moist while the saag paneer (a personal favorite) was some of the best I've ever had! And the prices are extremely reasonably. You'll leave Gate of India with a full belly and a full wallet.

Best Indian Food in Hollywood!

by bidaal

My husband and I rely on the Gate at least once every month and sometimes more frequently for tasty, comforting, homestyle Indian food. We've tried just about all of the veggie dishes and they're fabulous. The chicken tikka is wonderful with the tandoori roti. We've not eaten at the restaurant itself, instead opting for delivery. Their delivery service is fantastic and always on time. We LOVE the Gate. If you want good food that's not overpriced and friendly service go to the Gate.

by ariana_zariah

I've eaten here several times and cannot say enough about how flavorful their dishes are. Their Samosas are stuffed plump with fresh veggies. The mint sauce and spicy mango sauce that come gratis with your table naan, YUM! I personally love the cococut curry and the vegetable korma.

Dress casual, but the ambience is fun. Wall to wall, ceiling to floor Indian tapestries, paintings, trinkets and displays. The service isn't speedy, but polite, very zen.

Street parking or pay to park.

I found out that there is a new owner & all I can say is that everything has changed for the better. The food was delicious & fresh and the service was perfect. If you like Indian food than this restaurant is a must!

Pros: food, service

One of the best

by margineau

Excellent food and service. The chicken and shrimp tikka masala are the best. Food is very good and prices are very reasonable. After so long and trying so many indian restaurants I have finally found a place where I can have good indian food.

I highly recommend this place.

Mouth-watering selections

by keelu

It's easy to make a good choice because all of the dishes are great. The chicken korma is tender and creamy--the best! The owner and staff are friendly and effecient. For the quality of the food, the price is very reasonable. I recommend splitting a dinner for two in order to sample a variety. I'm so glad this place exists; it's an answer to my weekly indian food cravings. The best in LA.

Pros: clean bathrooms, parking lot, nice decor/ music

Great Indian Food

by cbsmith1

I've been looking for months to find an Indian restaurant that was as good as the little cheap places on 6th Street in Manhattan and I've finally found it - Gate of India. The food is not expectional but it is very good and it is very cheap.

Pros: Inexpensive, Tasty, Consistent
