Okay, so it's a few years since I stayed at Pigeon Point Hostel, but it was always one of my favorite stops along the coast between LA and SF during the 1980s and early 1990s. The lighthouse is still a working lighthouse, and it's open to the public for tours on at least some Sundays. Meanwhile, travelers from all over the world stay in the lodging nearby. There's also a hot tub right above the rocks, looking directly out to sea. Kitchen privileges come with buying a bunk for the night (and yes, they really are bunks - you need to bring a sleeping bag). It's bare-bones accommodation. Just in case you're unlucky enough to end up with a heavy-duty snorer in your dormitory, bring earplugs as well as that sleeping bag and, of course, your own towels!

This HI hostel has a beautiful location at an old lighthouse overlooking the ocean and a beach with great tidepools. It's just south of Half Moon Bay and north of Santa Cruz, and also really close to the Ano Nuevo State Reserve where you can visit the seals. The hostel is actually broken up into a few different houses, each with a few dorm rooms and kitchen facilities. They also have a few private rooms as well.
