This is one of my favorite lunch stops. The food is great and priced well. The staff operates like a well oiled machine. Getting the lunch rush feed well, taken care of and off to finish the day.

Highly recommended for busy Palo Alto.

I'm finally at the end of my California posts, and it finishes with our first meal: Friday lunch in Palo Alto at Osteria. It was the four of us grabbing lunch before driving into city. Osteria is a small, neighborhood, Italian spot in down

The gnoccis here are unbeatable. Order pasta. I'd rate the rest of the food only one or two stars. I haven't seen the drunk owner in a year or two but he was always nice to us and our young children. The wait staff is quick-moving (don't expect warm/fuzzy). This is more of a quick eats restaurant than a stay-and-chat-for-awhile or party place. It is such a small restaurant that no doubt, they prefer the tables to turnover quickly. Must make a reservation a week in advance or they'll be booked.

Cons: Small restaurant, not good for big parties (more than 6)

Went here for the first time this weekend with my husband and seven-year old son. Was initially put-off when no one greeted us and our first interraction with the host was a hand-in-the-face as he walked past us to sit a regular who entered after us. All was forgiven, however. The host, perhaps knowing his faux pas, was extremely gracious thereafter. Our server was wonderful -- after admitting our ignorance of Italian wines, he didn't talk down to us but recommended a wonderful bottle that paired perfectly with our meal. And our meal!!!! Everything was delicious!!! We started with the artichoke bottoms with shrimp and a glass of presecco -- palatte pleasing to the extreme!. Next, the melon and prociutto was simple and perfect. My husband had the spinach pasta with bay shrimp, I had the spinach pasta with chicken and my son had a half-order of the tortellini with prociutto, peas and cream. We were all fighting over who's was best. We were drooling over the carpaccio delivered to our neighbor and have promised to order that next time. We sat towards the back of the restaurant in warm/cozy table. It was a fabulous family meal. We couldn't believe our tab when the check came!!! It was the deal of the century. We will most definitely return and cannot wait until our next meal at Osteria.

Cons: Can't think of any

Reviews of Osteria fall into one of two categories-either they loved the food or they hated the terrible service. And that's the thing about Osteria, both are right. The owner, a short man with curly hair, is horrible. He is drunk a lot of the time and is mean and rude to customers on a regular basis. So, while his staff are generally not bad, they know that if they're rude, whatever they dish out won't be nearly as bad as what the owner will say to you. The customer doesn't have any recourse and everyone knows it. You want to speak to the manager or owner? Good luck. Case in point. We were there about a week ago and the two guys next to us complained that there was a hair in one of the dishes (a gray hair, this guy had brown hair). The waiter apologized and took the dish away to replace it. A few minutes later though, the owner came wandering over saying that "he could order anything he wanted as long as it's not the same dish". When the customer said that he really liked what he originally ordered, the owner, I kid you not, said "why are you being such an a**h*le?". The guy was STUNNED(and so were we)but held it together pretty well. They went back and forth for a few minutes in which time the owner also called him a d*ck. Finally, and without apology, the owner wandered off and started randomly talking to people and picking up their kids. It was WEIRD. The waiter tried to apologize saying "you know, Italian temper" but clearly the staff have no control over him. We knew this guy had a reputation but it was like nothing I've ever seen before. He was also answering the phones and since he was so clearly drunk, that would explain the lost reservations in past reviews.
Regardless, the place is packed every night. The food IS good so, apparently at the end of the day, he can treat people any way he likes and he still packs them in.

Cons: Horrible owner - rude to customer daily

At first when we entered the restaurant, we had a 7:30pm reservation, but still had to wait 'till 8pm to get seated. We sat down at the table and they did not even ask us for our drink order or if we wanted any wine. Lucky for us we didn't order any wine or we would be very upset that they didn't ask us. We started right away with order our main dishes and the dishes came out hot. The food was excellent here at Osteria. I had the Spinach Fettuccini with shrimp in a cream sauce. The sauce was not too creamy, the pasta was delicious because it was just right being not too soft and not too hard. Don't expect to get more water because they never filled our water again. Guess that is the treatment if you don't buy wine...

Overall.... great food, but don't expect great service...

The calamari steak is heavenly. If you plan to go to this restaurant, do not make the mistake by ordering anything else. This restaurant is moderately priced and has a casual atmosphere. The tables are close together, so don't expect much privacy.

Osteria is great. The food is excellent, piping hot and very reasonably priced. I love the calamari steak, but you can't go wrong with any dish. We recently "split" a small Caesar salad and had very generous portions.

They don't have the best wine list for wine by the glass. We ended up getting a bottle of Thomas Fogerty Chardonay that was perfect with a great meal.

PROS: Great food, reasonably priced
CONS: a bit small and sometimes very hurried

The hostess is VERY RUDE and bad attitude.

After we were seated and reading menu, the hostess came with very rude attitude that we have to leave the table if we have not ordered yet. We were waiting for our guests. Since we were "threaten" to order, we have to make our order before our guests arrived. We have never had such bad experience before.

When one had such a terrible experience, no one feel like enjoy the food anymore ...

This is not the first time we had bad service in Osteria.

If you have important date or meeting, don't pick osteria.

Simply the best!
Food is great - fresh salads, pasta done just right. We like it our kids like it.
The service always is courteous and warm. They are very sweet to the kids.
The spinach salad and the spinach ravioli are a family favorite.
Reservations are recommended. Give yourself time to park.
A busy place but you have not tried it then do so.

Osteria is reliable in serving a great meal. Many waiters have been there for a long time and are very efficient. It is not a quiet setting, but a warm and crowded one (difficult to move around at times). The chairs are somewhat uncomfortable, but perhaps they don't want you sitting for too long since there are always more customers waiting! Location is great too.

The Italian food here is good, and quite authentic, but the service is among the worse I've experienced. It seems especially bad because the slights appear to be intentional and they do not even pretend that customers that they know (and who appear to be among Silicon Valley's well to do's) are treated much better than everyone else. For that reason alone, I will not give them my business.

I really like the whole package at Osteria. The food is great. I personally love the shrimp over green pasta with cream sauce (can't remember the exact menu item name). The cream sauce is very light, not thick and gooey like other places. It feels like a 'hip' restaurant, though I'm not necessarily a hip person. It does get crowded, but I think they take reservations.

When I called to make a reservation, the man answering the phone answered by saying, "Get to it!" I asked him if he was talking to me and he responded rudely, "Yes, how can I help you?"

I called back to tell him that he lost a customer in Palo Alto and he responded, "Fine with me."

I have been to the restaurant once before and the food is only mediocre. I would not recommed waiting or putting up with their rude staff to anyone.

After reading several reviews from diners that related their experiences with lost or un-honored reservations at Osteria, I boldlyor perhaps foolishlywent ahead and called to reserve a table for a Saturday evening. The man who answered the phone was brusque and my suspicion was that he never even bothered to write down the reservation. This was substantiated when I called to confirm and was told that no reservations under my name existed. The man who answered didnt offer to do a thing about replacing our lost reservation, but asked that we come to the restaurant and basically hang around until a table comes up. There seems to be a pattern with this restaurant: the people they dont knowi.e. arent important to themget bumped and are basically used to fill-in the gaps by waiting around for an empty table for 40 or 60 minutes. In short: stay away from this place.

We love this restaurant, and apparently many others do as well since Osteria has been voted the best Italian Restaurant in Palo Alto 5 years in row. The food is exceptional and the wait staff and hostess go out of their way to accommodate extra people and special requests. A few months ago we had 2 additional people show up for a table of 6 reservation. The hostess made it work. You will need a reservation even during the week. And any amount of wait is truly worth it.

Everyone who has been to this place leaves feeling really good. These people really know how to cook their Italian food. First of all you really need to start with a reservation, or you will end up waiting about an hour to get seated (yes, the poeple know its good so they keep coming!.) A dish of pasta is about $12 more or less. The waiters really know what they are talking about which really helps because if you are a person like me, you can never make up your mind! Free parking all around because this is down town palo alto. Also a good thing is that they are so versatile, they have food for every taste. for example I'm really into seafood but most of my friends hate it, we can go here with no problems.

I eat there as often as I can, but I also agree that service can definitely be better. Besides the hostess, there's also another grumpy waiter. The other thing that I have trouble with is the crowded seating - not very comfy. My recommendation, as someone who has had plenty of experiences with the place, is to make a reservation a day in advance, and also pick an earlier time. If you wait till the peak of the dinner hour you are going to be left waiting. Other than that, I still think it's one of the best Italian places around here - great food, good portions, great prices.

I have been coming here for years and had recommended it to my boyfriend's mom when she visited from Canada. I was so embarrassed with the way we were treated. Not only was she rude when we first checked in, but she was rude when she sat us and finally at the end of the evening to ask for our payment. She is clearly an unhappy person and almost ruined the great evening I was having. Thankfully for the company I was with and the much smarter waiter who listened and apologized for her actions saved it from its demise. I love the food and feel of Osteria, but have to say that I'm still a little hesitant to go back.

I had a first date there with reservations. We waited 45 minutes...I kid you not before they seated us. And, and, I add, that was after we asked angrily about it. They didn't apologize. I asked around and found out that they seat people they know over reservations. My recommendation to the restaurant...quit taking reservations.
Oh and the food was just average.

My husband and I wanted a romantic evening out. But Osteria has just absolutely DESTROYED it. We made a reservation, which didn't mean anything. We waited over 30 minutes while other people who came in after us got seated (I could see that people with names written down after us for the same number of seats got seated first). Then the best part:when I asked the OWNER about other people cutting in, he told me that IF I WERE YOU, I WOULDN'T BE SAYING THAT. Come on, even Gary Danko with better food doesn't dare to have an attitude like that!

osteria is easily my favorite italian place in palo alto. the pasta is superb and is way better priced than all the surrounding italian restaurants (beppo's, il fornaio, pasta?, evil cheesecake...). a reservation is probably a good idea, but only needs to be made a couple of hours in advance. the carpaccio is wonderful.

TERRIBLE SERVICE! Made the mistake of going on a Sat night and despite the fact we had made reservations (for a party of 4) a week in advance, we waited 45 minutes while the owner & hostess sat 4-5 groups ahead of us for no good reason. We complained. No sincere apologies for the wait. Seems the only way to get decent service is to know the owner or staff. When we had gone on a weeknight we enjoyed the food but the weekends are a nightmare. Why make reservations when they mean nothing?
