I liked the decor and Italian speaking waiters. Good coffee too. Waiters very nice also. BUT....
I decided on the minestrone soup as I was not that hungry. While it was tasty , I have to say I have had better soup from a can ( Progresso- Puck) Theirs was full of too many carrots and potatoes and very skimpy on the other veggies such as zucchini and peas. I think I found one or two beans and zero pasta. So basically it was bowl of potato and carrot in broth. Unimpressive!
My daughter had a calzone, which she enjoyed and was very tasty, but at $15 for more or less an inside out piece of pizza, it's too high in price. I would not go here again, as I have found other Italian restaurants on or near Columbus Ave I liked better.

Excellent food, excellent wine list - this is coming from someone who IS Italian. Great Trattoria pricing (ie, this is not a cafeteria, nor is it a fine dining establishment, but it is well priced for what it is - a standout in a neighbourhood of great Italian food). Also - the nicest, most genuine people you will ever meet - a member of our party left her handbag in a taxi and there was nothing they could not do to help - phoning taxi companies, offering free drinks, etc. This is genuine Italian hospitality, and delicious food - everything was excellent, but the pastas really stand out!

Nasty owners/managers.\r
Giovanni, who i was told is the owner, completely bad mouthed us in Italian thinking we didn't understand what he was saying.\r
I also heard him call one of the hostesses a Bi### and misstreating another employee. \r
I think miserable people who treat others like this don't deserve my business or yours no matter how good the food might be. \r

my first SF, we found this restaurant as SF top pasta restaurant voted on San Francisco Chronicle in a guide book at Hilton Hotel room. trip=eat yammy food !!! we were really looking forward to eat super tasty pasta. I'm really picky for food, first bite is everything to me. we sit down and order drink... ask recommended pasta to waiter, as his recommend I ordered ""Tortellini Boscaiola"", and tried to share with my husband because I'm very small apatite, BUT he requested to order 1 entree per person !!! YES each person have to order food in this restaurant. there's no sign to notice about it in front of door and write about it small in menu. we didn't mind to order 2 plates, but this restaurant policy made us really feel bad. \r
this restaurant is not supre high class.\r
how about top pasta in SF ? ""Tortellini Boscaiola"" clearly too much light taste cream sauce and lasagna sauce was too sour because too little cheese. who voted this pasta is top in SF ?\r
I never believe guide book again.

My Italian-American boyfriend & I went here on a whim one afternoon for a late lunch because Cafe Sport wasn't open yet. We were drawn in by the atmosphere, a glance at the menu & available sidewalk seating. I don't usually just walk in to a place like this, but we were pleasantly surprised. Started with the calamari. The marinara sauce was delectably spiced, the calamar lightly breaded, not greasy. We ordered the gnocci with gorgonzola cream sauce (me) & the sausage-stuffed raviolis with mushroom sauce (my bf). Both pastas came with a salad starter. Once we realized that the salad mixta was not dressed (a bit odd), added our own balsamic vinegar & olive oil, & lots of salt & pepper, it was quite nice. We also had bread to dip in the BV and EVOO. \r
\r
The gnocci were really nice. They were light & virtually melted in my mouth. My BF, when he tried them, said they were ""almost as good as his nonas"" - high praise indeed. His raviolis were actually the better of the two. I don't usually eat meat, but I might make an exception for this. The aroma wafting off his plate told me immediately that they would be good. The mushroom sauce combined with the perfectly seasoned sausage stuffing were to die for. The pasta itself was, I believe, a tomato pasta, which my BF usually does not go for, but he enjoyed this one just fine and he is a very picky eater, Overall a lovely meal, on a lovely day in the city.\r
\r
As far as drinks go, I asked the very attentive (but not overly so) waiter for a recommendation and he proffered a lovely Sauvignon Blanc, which complimented the gnocci perfectly. A glass of Pinot to finish & he bill came to $97, including tip.\r
\r
My main criticism is that the bread was dry and tasteless and, for me, good bread is a MUST (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). I didn't even go inside the restaurant, so I have nothing to say about the interior atmosphere. Bottom line, this place is worth trying & I will return.

Cons: a lot of mess!

First off, the food. Terrible. Typical NYC / SF Little Italy Tourist Trap. Don't go here for food. It is only Italian by name and by the host / wait staff that either are Italian or do a fine job pretending to be Italian. \r
\r
Peroni. Great Peroni on Tap served in nice glassware. Great for a warm (or non-foggy) day. \r
\r
People Watching. This is North Beach after all, so you can't really get this wrong. But, it is located in a great spot in North Beach and if you get an outside table on Columbus, you are in for a treat, for some good ol' SF crazies.\r
\r
But, it is only worth 2 stars because as far as an Italian restaurant goes, terrible. Well, if you would give your local Olive Garden 3 stars, then this place deserves 4. But, i give O.G. 1, so this place gets 2.

Even though this place can be tourist filled, that shouldn't take anything away from the fact that the atmosphere is great, it's clean, and the food is satisfying and delicious. I came here with the family and had a huge bowl of spaghetti puttanesca, which had the anchovy flavor I was looking for, and the service was extremely proactive. About a year later I was here during the evening on a date, and the ambiance was great: we were seated inside by the front window which overlooked columbus, candles on the table and everything. The server was italian and charming and the food (we both had ravioli) was rich and savory. I plan on taking my next group of tourist friends here.

Sat inside as it was too cold to sit out. Had Caesar's salad to start. It was good but not outstanding. Had linguine with clams and mussels, asked them to make it with spaghetti rather than linguine. My wife had the Osso Bucco.\r
\r
My linguini arrived (not spaghetti as I asked) it was nothing more than OK. There was hardly any pasta and the clam/ mussel sauce was somewhat bland (more garlic!!!) \r
\r
My wife's Osso Bucco was good not great. After a bottle of wine and no dessert $100. \r
\r
Won't go back, there are too many others that have to be better.

My girlfriend and I went to this restaurant and fell in love. Its a cute little place with an authentic italian feel to it. Most employees there are italian even our server who also could not understand our order but it was more amusing than bothersome. We conversed with the manager who came to make sure we got the drink we wanted. The cooks sing to themselves as they prepare the food, which is AWSOME by the way. I had chicken parmesan which was very moist and delicious while my girlfriend had the gnocci, which she said was tasty as well. The drinks were interesting and they also served us a complementary drink at the end. The bill came to around $50 and it was well worth it.

As a NYC foodie and first time SF visitor (see my Boulevard and Gary Danko reviews), my girlfiend and I wanted to hang out on Columbus in North Beach one night and have a good Italian meal. We shouldn't have chosen Pinocchio's. From the very beginning, when the server couldn't understand the cocktail I wanted, a Scotch Manhattan! (I eventually had to get up and go talk to the bartender myself - a first!) - to the appetizer, a passable, bland Clams & Mussels, to the entrees - a dry tasteless Spaghetti Bolognese and a flavorless Chicken Limone - this place certainly put a damper on our evening. No dessert, thank you. The tab came to $64. A Waste.

My boyfried took me here for my birthday a few months ago. We made reservations and were able to sit outside. It was so nice, the weather in the city that night was killer! We had carpaccio for our appitizer, cioppinio and a fresh pasta with seafood dish and a nice bottle of white wine. It was perfect. Our dessert was delicious too. The service was great and the food was mouth watering!!! I loved it!! I will be back for sure! The only thing about that area in the city is parking, that no good, but it is worth the wait!

We were able to get in with not too much of a wait on a Friday evening for outdoor dining. The service wasn't the best, but overall would rate it was good. The food was delicious. The waiter had a decent knowledge of their wines and recommended and very good bottle. With the tons of outdoor italian places in North Beach this one is up there with a few of my favs. Definitely better than Calzones across the street which has much worse service and not very good food. Will be coming back.

My family and I went here on a Sunday night and were seated all the way in the back by the kitchen, on the way to the bathroom. Avoid sitting here! It was loud to the point that it seemed like they were TRYING to throw around pots and pans to make noise. The bread was too dry as well. To their credit, the waitress and food runner were VERY accomadating and provided great service. We had to head out early because it was just too loud, but once I finally got to my vodka penne, it was very yummy. Still, the good food wasn't enough to make me want to go back...I can get something just as good for a cheaper price and better ambiance.

The gnocci with gorgonzola sauce was excellant. My wife had linguini Palermo with red sauce shimp and scallops and black olives which was tasty but a bit salty for my taste. We had proscuitto withe melone for an appatizer. The melone was ok ;however, the proscuitto was perfect. Not slimy or stringy. The sweet aand the salt flavours blended nicely. We ate there for lunch and we shall return.

I disagree with the negative reviews. This is a charming restaurant. It's neat walking back to the restroom... you pass by the chef's cooking away (fresh) alongside the path. The CHICKEN PARMESAN was outstanding!!! Wonderful sauce with it and nice size portion. Location is great too... right on the corner of Columbus and Vallejo. Park at the public garage 2 blocks west on Vallejo.

While the food at pinochio was apetizing, this restaurant is the antithesis of romantic. It's drafty, stone cold walls and large rooms which lack any element of warmth and intimacy killed what was supposed to be a romantic dinner for two for my husband and I to celebrate our 6th anniversary. If a group outing is what you have in mind, there is ample seating! But for an intimate dinner for two, this is not the place to go to wine and dine and foster romance.

What a dynamite find! This place has a great big menu with pizza too! Which is the best Ive had since our trip to Italy & Sicily. The staff is mostly Italian or international and very friendly. I sat at the counter and the waiter was speaking Italian to the chef! There was really cool italian and international music on a great speaker system. This cocktail /coffee menu is why I went in. It was outside on one of there tables. My jaw dropped to the floor when I checked out the awesome bar and T.V. area and the beauty of this place. It was ALOT of fun. They made sure I had everything and more!!! This is a great hangout where you'd want to be seen. Casual but elegant, caters to a nice crowd but really reasonable! What a refreshing addition to the North Beach Area.

I love eating in North Beach. The atmosphere, everything is great. the only downfall is how they almost all ""drag you in off the street.

On the busy corner of Columbus and Vallejo my nose detected an aroma so delicious it led me to Pinnochios. I was greeted by a lovely woman who served me a sample of one of their home dishes. It aroused not only my senses but left my tongue aching for more. It would be an injustice to try to describe my culinary experience in 150 words or less, but I'll share this with you fellow Italian food lovers... You will not be disappointed! Oh ladies check out Enzo and his piercing blue eyes, Nicholas Cage has nothing on him! Thank you T.P. for a wonderful dining experience I will be back!

I am on a search for the best Italian restaurant myself. I think I just found it and it is this place! Great food, wine, music, bar, outdoor sitting, staff. The only thing that I was surprised was when my husband and I ordered for tee and the old owner just to have this beautiful leather box with tea bags made out of silk; I even wrote down the web site to buy that tee; however now they have marketplace tea bags. Still I am not gonna cry just for that, still a great restaurant.

I ordered the spinach and ricotta lasagna and it truly is the best I've had anywhere. The tomato sauce was perfectly seasoned. My friend and I split a tiramisu and it was sooooo good! Also, a great value since a well dressed salad came with the entree and sourdough bread, too. It was a sunny day and we were able to have lunch at an outdoor table. Go! You won't be sorry.

Having a pizza appetizer and early evening pasta special with my mate plus wine and terramisu at this sidewalk eatery was wonderfully romantic. I proposed, he accepted, magnifico!

All I have to say is DELISIOUS, the food is out of this world! The restaurant has a lovely ambiance and the staff is great, especially the hostess and bartender. I am a regular and look foward to everytime I get to go to Pinocchios. Try it, I know you'll make it your favorite place to dine too.

We first discovered this place when looking for a quite bar with nice ambiance to have an after dinner drink in North Beach. The staff was wonderfully pleasant and friendly. During the North Beach Festival, we decided to dine there and the food was DELICOUS and the prices were reasonable. Our waiter however, was not one friendliest but the hostess and the rest of the staff was as always pleasant! We must have just lucked out and got the one bad server as most restaurants have. This place is definitely worth a try!
