Let me get the pleasantries taken care of first:
- This is a nice, clean, well-equipped gym
- The owner and lead coach Paul is an expert and good teacher
- Teshina is a great coach and an awesome competitor

Ok, with that said I want to share my extremely frustrating experience with this gym which is almost completely a customer service problem. I guess some businesses don't think that matters for some reason. I have been coming to this gym on and off for over 2 years. I first started working out with them back in the old La Mesa location in 2010. So, I've known them for a long time and I feel like the staff should be able to talk to me about any problems or concerns very comfortably.
For over a year I have felt like the 2nd lead trainer, Lisa has had an active dislike towards me. She is extremely rude on nearly any occasion, but I always try to keep a smile because I enjoy the gym and she's not the reason I'm there. But, in the last 3 months this has been getting worse and worse. To the point where half the time I go in I feel like there is going to be some sort of confrontation. So, I asked a friend about it to see if it was me and to kinda figure out what was going on and I hear back. "No, she is like that to everybody and she frequently upsets clients." Ok, not a good sign. But, with that info now I was really gonna try and push it to the back of my mind.
Then, a couple days later I went in to work out and the owner pulled me aside first thing and tells me that it's come to his attention I've been doing workouts different than what's on the board. True, I didn't know that was taboo if they were standard crossfit workouts, but if that's all there is to it then I'm fine with that and obviously won't do it again. BUT, this was not a conversation, this was a scolding like a parent to a child, basically he was angry about it and I didn't realize it was a problem. Again, I'm happy to deal with any situation civilly and FIX IT! What I don't respond to is lecturing, scolding, and arrogance.
I was completely caught off guard by the tone with which I was confronted and it took me a minute to figure out my response. So I finished my workout and then asked if I could talk to him more about this. I told him I was surprised by the way he talked to me about this and I told him how I had felt about the atmosphere with Lisa and asked if they had something against me. He said that he has had this problem and this conversation about Lisa MANY TIMES... HELLO!? Isn't that a problem right there?
Anyway, I told him that I didn't realize we had to stick exactly to the workout of the day because I've seen other people doing that on many occasions but he said that they pay extra and basically I don't pay enought to be doing that. Fine. The I told him that if that's the problem that he can just tell me that straight out and I'll understand. He says... "I CAN TALK HOWEVER I WANT, IT'S MY F***ING GYM AND I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT." Holy cow, are you serious!? I never raised my voice, I simply called him out on treating a customer like a child. Then it went on like this for another couple minutes, with a couple more F-Bombs.
To sum it up. If you don't fit their mold, don't expect to be treated like a customer, expect a lot of attitude and to be treated like a subject in their kingdom. I guess I came in there with a different goal than they want or are used to... I wanted to find a good environment to do crossfit, keep my energy up, and stay in good shape. They want to be an elite training center (and nothing else?!). Well great what if that's not your plan? Then stay out of the way. What I expect at a business is NOT TO BE SWORN AT, as a customer. Also, a hint of gratitude for patronage, AND for the 10 people I've referred to them. GOOD LUCK, you won't find any gratitude here. But Paul did explain to me that people pay lots of money and come from very far away to train with him because he's so good. Well, I know that. But it takes class and humility to simply show that... without saying it.
I LOVE CROSSFIT, and I will continue, but I guess it has to be somewhere else.
