If you have a pet that needs special attention then it's worth the drive to see Dr. Jeff Cohen. He is the most informed vet I have ever been to in a lifetime of owning animals. He specializes in internal medicine for animals but he was also wonderful with us, the people. We have a dog who has Degenerative Myelopathy. He will always tell you what he would do if it was his animal and the answer isn't always surgery or more expense. The animal's well being is always clearly his priority. Other doctors have seemed "caring" but this Dr. Cohen is intellectual, well informed, practical, and beyond nice. He has our full confidence and he's never been wrong. The reason there is only five stars is that they won't let me put more. We don't go here for routine visits because of the drive (over 60 miles) but if our animals need special care I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Take your pet here!: Dr. Cohen at Newport Beach Veterinary has to be the most honest, knowledgeable and overall helpful vet we've ever encountered. He also has the credentials and devoted following to prove it! My husband and I were amazed at his care for our pets and will continue to take them to see Dr. Cohen whenever "our kids" needs anything at all. He is brilliant!

My husband and I are very picky, having gone to several vets without being totally happy, and have only great things to say about this doctor and his staff and place. These are our family members afterall! He explains all possible concerns, treatment options and follow-up needs with such empathy and understanding. His love of animals and people is evident in every little detail, from the moment you book your appointment and speak with his ever so smart staff to the great feeling you get when you walk through the door. We have been amazed how happy our pets are to go see Dr. Cohen and they always come home better than ever. A++++

I've taken my dogs and cats to Dr. Cohen for 13 years now and he is fantastic. His staff is very accommodating and have often squeezed me in on the fly when need be and Dr. Cohen keeps working till everyone who needs him is seen. They always follow up with a phone call after an appointment to make sure the patient is doing better, which I think is amazing and way beyond the call of duty.

Dr. Cohen really takes the time to listen (very rare for most vets) and examine my pets, and explain the possible courses of action. Theirs is a small facility, lovely and personal but then the "cherry on top" is that I found out he was also a Specialist for internal matters. My pets get an extra special vet.

I also like that I can leave my pet for an exam and a bath then pick them up after work or if I need to get other jobs done.

I recently had to put a cat down and Dr.Cohen (and everyone there) was really helpful and thoughtful with great bedside manner. He gave me honest, caring advice, and really helped me in what was a difficult decision. Mrs. Cohen even sent a sympathy card afterward! I think this is by far the best vet in the neighborhood.

This veterinary hospital is a wonderful place to bring your loved animal. Dr, Cohen is by far the finest veterinarian in the Newport Beach area. The staff is comforting, informative, fair, and compassionate. They display a true love for animals and work diligently to keep my pets in the best health possible. I once had to wait to afford a procedure, but I never felt judged and always felt like they put the health of my dog first. Instead, the doctor's wife said we should do the procedure and I should pay when I could. My dog didn't have to wait to have her tumor removed. It turned out to be malignant but the doctor got it all. Bless them! I definitely would recommend anyone looking for excellence that is fair priced, honest, professional place to bring your pet here. Thank you to Dr. and Mrs. Cohen for the many years of health for my pet family.

We had to put my cat to sleep after 18 years of unconditional affection, companionship and sweetness. It was so hard getting past the denial and making the decision. Dr. Cohen took the time to talk to us about what our kitty was experiencing physiologically as a result of aging and renal failure. He managed the procedure with sincere caring, sensitivity and respect and compassion for me and my partner.

On this and previous visits I was impressed with Dr. Cohen's knowledge and diagnostic process and would recommend him 100%. The clinic's unique personal service adds to the experience in a positive way. The waiting room atmosphere is one of friendly, mutual support and conversation. As another reviewer mentioned, they don't try to push you or sell you on a bunch of pet store items. Dr. Cohen would always present multiple options and lots of information in his advice and leave the decisions up to me.

This place is one-of-a-kind and totally down-to-earth. It's always worth every cent when you know you will get the correct answers to difficult questions and are treated with compassion & respect!

For over 20 years our most beloved family members have been patients at the Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital. We have always received compassionate and courteous care and we are grateful for their services. As a physician and surgeon myself, Dr. Cohen demonstrates excellent diagnostic and technical skills and is always comprehensive in his patient's management.

The Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital is impeccably run by Dr.Jeffrey Cohen and Debra Cohen, an extremely experienced and skilled veterinary technician. Their expertise, compassion, and empathy goes unmatched. Through the years and difficult decisions with our poodles, they have always been there for us. Having their support has made all the difference.

The high standards of this hospital puts us at ease whenever we have to leave our babies overnight. Walking into the front office, we are always greeted with a smile from their professional staff. Everyone goes out of their way to make us feel comfortable. There are always fresh flowers, candy, and beverages available to make us feel at home. Not to mention the goodies for their patients. The hospital and exams rooms always sparkle with cleanliness and I wouldn't hesitate to eat off the floor! My family enthusiastically recommends Newport Beach Veterinary Hospital!!

like everyone, i certainly have a plethera of veterinarians to choose from and in thirteen years of commuting 40 minutes to dr. cohen's, it has been a total pleasure. there aren't enough words to review the level of care my beloved dogs have received and whether the news has been bad or good, the entire staff has been thorough, patient & loving. i most appreciate dr. cohen's conservative approach and i am thrilled to get a late night call back, something i rarely experience from a human's physician! i would never place my pets in anyone else's care. A CLASS ACT!

Dr. Cohen and his entire staff are nothing short of excellent. One of my cats is now 18 years old and still plays with toys. I attribute much of his resilience to the veterinary care he has gotten from Dr Cohen, his wife Debra & everyone at Newport Beach Veterinary. I have received wonderful advice about what procedures to do and which not to do from Dr. Cohen, and I feel he always gives a lot of thought, expertise and compassion to his opinions. In my opinion, this is the premier place to take your animals. They are the best I have seen yet so I will stick with for as long as they exist. They have EARNED my trust for my pets needs with PROVEN care.

I read with total disgust the last review by the air-head "Jacqueline W." who liked the dedication of Dr. Cohen but "had taken a sleeping pill" and was upset he called her so late and so he must have a big ego (?). Hello??? Obviously, a nut! As a long term client of Dr. Cohen and his hospital in Newport Beach, I can tell you there isn't an egotistically bone in his body and if hard work and dedication to animals is not to anyones liking, they best go elsewhere to someone who isn't as brilliant as Dr. Cohen (can you say specialist?), or caring or wonderful. Dr. Cohen has worked into the night to save my pets before and I pray he never changes! I suspect the last reviewer didn't work for anyone that was dedicated to helping helpless animal before.Take another pill Miss Jacqueline!

BEWARE !!! Let me say Dr. Cohen is VERY PERSONABLE. However, the second time I visited, he had been up all night "saving" a dog. Just what I wanted a dedicated vet! He did labs and cultures on my dog, I called 7 days later asking for results, I was asked how late he could return my call, was 1 or 2 too late?....I said 1 or 2 in the morning? And was told yes, he FREQUENTLY stays until 5:30 a.m. and returns calls when he has time or on Sundays. I said midnight would be my cut off time. Sure enough 11:30 P.M. this past Friday he called. I had taken a sleeping pill and can hardly recall what he said. Ridiculous! I have been in the medical field in surgery for over 25 yrs., and I would not let a M.D. touch me with this schedule, let alone do surgery on my dog. If clean and personable are what you are looking for, this is the place for you. If you are looking for SOUND JUDGEMENT keep looking. Volume and EGO seems to be the priority, not effective care.

Response from this business:

Best wishes to a Very Unusual Client Interesting. I've never had to respond to charges of Dr. Cohen being over-dedicated before. It is entirely true that my husband is very personable, smart, & dedicated. I thought it was only wives that got to complain when their husbands work long hours but, maybe not. How this 'sleepy woman' made the jump to poor judgement & ego from working long hours is beyond me, however. What this client neglected to say was that Dr. Cohen did diagnosed the problem correctly within 15 minutes of seeing her pet after she had gone to multiple vet visits & spent a great deal of money. Dr. Cohen respects that she elected not to do anything about the problem; a personal choice. Good luck to this pet owner & nothing but good health for your sweet dog. Debra Cohen, RVT

I am so thankful to have the opportunity to have this vet in my neighborhood. This is a clinic you go out of your way to take your pet to and from the things people say in the waiting room, they do come from all over and even out-of-state! Other pet vets send real sick pets here to see him. We have had the good luck to take our pets here for a long time for all kinds of things. There is a positive up-lifting feeling you get when you walk in the door, like a small town. I hope everyone who reads this has a chance to visit the good man Dr. Cohen and his loving clinic.

New to the area after moving south from San Francisco and went online to look for a vet and the reviews were overwhelming for Dr. Cohen. He's a specialist but also agrees to see pets for regular examinations and he is well worth the drive we made from Laguna Beach. I can't imagine a more competent, thorough, or caring professional and I would recommend him wholeheartedly to any friend or family member.

In contrast to many of the other facilities masquerading as a safe haven for your pet when they are sick or broken this vet is the real deal! Dr. Cohen rocks! This smart and sweet man, is clearly not in it for the money if you knew the kind of hours he works. He has done right by us about a thousand times. We have many dogs and a few cats without the luxury of unlimited funds and our experience has been that he has a knack for just performing the most necessary, critical procedures, and NOT drumming up a big bill, just for the heck of it or because he needs to go on a fishing expedition because he doesn't have a clue like other vets (that will remain unmentioned). When you go to someone so smart like Doc Cohen, he just zeros in on the true problem. God bless him. If you have to run your beloved fuzzy family member to a vet for a normal problem or a complicated one, you know what this vet says is the honest truth. If you've ever been waiting in his lobby, you always hear his praises from other people just like me who have been going to see him for forever and have amazing stories of his brilliance. This guy is one of the good ones.

If service and intellectual excellence and the life of your cat matters to you, take your kitty to see Dr. Cohen. I send everyone here because they saved my cat's life! Twice! If you love your kitty, this place will restore your faith in vets because so many of them seem to be in it for the $$$ these days. These people work round the clock when it matters to save the pet you love the most. They truly understand. I cannot thank Dr. Jeff Cohen and his nurses and the women at the front desk enough for pulling me through this last crisis. Hugs and hugs all around.

I was going to another vet for the regular stuff and then he got sick. Unfortunately, when my dog got sick it was on a Saturday and the vet ran a lot of expensive tests and told me to come get my dog because they were closing. He could hardly even walk and I had no answers and he was clearly dying. I called a friend who told me to call Dr. Cohen. Even though it was almost closing, Dr. Cohen's staff took our call and we rushed over to see this fine vet. He diagnosed a diease called Addisons and my dog was in "crisis" and his kidneys were not working. All weekend these people worked and stayed with my dog and within a few days, he was on the road to recovery and is better than ever. I know in my heart that my dog would have died without Dr. Cohen. He is fantastic and I can't recommend him enough to anyone who wants the very best care for their pet.

I dragged my poor sick dog from vet to vet, spending mucho money only to feel like I knew even less than previously and not seeing any progress. I was referred to Dr. Cohen by my vet from 10 years ago who had retired and it was just in the nick of time. I really liked the place and the doctor and his girls. I feel I'm on the right course and my dog seem to be feeling a little better everyday. I write this internet review to help others from making my mistakes and recommend you go right to see Dr. Cohen if your dog is sick.

My husband and I have 2 dogs and a cat -->that hangs out at our house mainly and this has been our vet for more than 10 years. We lost our last dog to cancer about 2 years ago but Dr. Cohen and his wife couldn't have been more helpful or caring. The are so in tune to life "quality" and when Bailey's tumor returned even with the chemotherapy, they made her comfortable even to the end and helped us through our sadness to the other side. We are lucky that our current pets are doing so well but we did have to go ring their doorbell one night when we thought we had an emergency. It turned out that one of our dogs just had a stick stuck inside her mouth that the doctor removed--->for free but they were there for us at 11 o'clock at night. We so appreciate everything they do and we recommend them to everyone we know.

It can be difficult to get an appointment sometimes but this is THE VET for the area and I've sampled a bunch of them. Dr. Cohen is a sharp & funny guy who really knows his stuff. This veterinarian hospital is very chic, amazingly CLEAN, and his employees are very well trained. I have taken my dogs and cats to see Dr. Cohen for serious and regular checkups, and have always been pleased. All my pets are happy and healthy. They trim my dogs nails every month for free which is quite a chore. Thanks, doc!

I haven't had a pet of any kind for many years and I took my dog to various vets over the last 8 months until I was told (wrongly) by a local guy that my Labrador Retriever had hip problems called dysplasia. My dog had never had a problem walking, running or jumping for the ball. My breeder far away in San Diego recommended I get another opinion and to go see "Dr. Jeff Cohen in Newport Beach" and then I asked another Lab person and they said "Dr. Cohen in Newport Beach"---seems they have an amazing reputation. I really enjoyed the experience--the staff was great and although they were very busy, they served me coffee and helped ease my mind. This doctor couldn't have been better! The other vet's x-rays were not straight and Dr. Cohen showed me easily on his x-rays that my dogs hips were okay and just to be sure, Dr.Cohen sent them off to a place to be certified and they came back "Excellent." When I think that another vet wanted my pooch to have unnecessary and expensive surgery she didn't need---aaaargh! This is now my regular veterinarian forever and my dog loves going in to this place. I'm just so happy I found Dr. Jeff Cohen and his great team.

I had almost given up and was resigned that my dog was dying and there wasn't anything more to be done, afterall, I had spent thousands on him and been to two vets including a very bad "advanced' place in Tustin that almost broke me and left me in shambles. For some reason, I was chatting with a total stranger in line at the movies and she said I should see Dr. Cohen. I made an an appointment, and long story short, my dog is happy & active and the problem was NOT deathly cancer as I had been told but a non-malignant growth inside that was surgically corrected. Before you spend your life's savings, go see an honest, smart vet. I salute you, Dr. Cohen.

12/5/2009 update! Dr. Cohen continues to be the very best choice I've made for my pets and I recommend him to all my friends and family! There is no finer vet!

When I first walked into his office, I knew it was going to be okay. Dr. Cohen's office is beautiful and his staff was very bright, efficient, and comforting. Dr. Cohen saved my dog's life after various trips to other places with no results. He was very thorough and attentive to everything I said which was such a change from the other vets. If you live anywhere near Newport Beach and you really love your pet, you'll take them to see this vet.

After long last I found a vet in southern cal who knows what he's doing. After 3 vets ran up huge bills on my sick dog and she just got sicker, a friend sent me to see Dr. Jeff Cohen in Newport Beach. I was afraid it would be very pricey being in Newport but it was less than the others. This doctor has special training more than regular vets and it sure makes a difference. I don't care I have to drive far to see him but he is a miracle worker and so wonderful as a person. The staff made me so comfortable when I was a wreck!

My experiences with this vet have been excellent. I went to so-called "cat experts" at "cat clinics" only to find they are not really experts but just confine their services to cats. Does anyone know this? I was referred to Dr. Cohen by a "dog person" who said he was a real specialist-type vet. This was lucky for me and my cat. My cat had been throwing up off and on for more than 2 months and after a few thousand $'s with the "cat clinics" and limited results, the good doctor here has my cat back to himself. It turns out my boss uses this vet, too and raves about him also for her Pug dog.

Was referred to this vet by several friends and I was planning on making an appointment to go meet him. Unfortunately, before that could happen, I came home from work and found the smaller of my two dogs (a Weiner Dog) had swallowed a rawhide chewy stix and was choking. Although it was after closing when I arrived, the ladies at the front desk waited for me and the vet's wife greeted me, took my dog Sadie to the back where they took some Xrays to see the thing was stuck way down her throat. Dr. Cohen showed me the problem and thoroughly explained everything about retrieving the chewy with some kind of video grabber and then proceeded to get it out, saving my dog's life. I saw the pictures of her throat and they were pretty bad. The next day, my dog went home, "happy as a clam" with a "Princess" bow on. It's so comforting to have someone to turn to to help your dog in a crisis (or not) that instantly knows what to do, helps you unselfishly, and is a pleasure to do business with. I'll never forget Dr. Cohen and his employees. If you need a wonderful vet, whether or not your pet's life depends upon it, go see Dr. Jeff Cohen in Newport.

Pros: Quality and Service Oriented

Cons: Parking
