In the 21st Century all places should accept credit cards

by Marcus R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,922

I like this place (Chana Masala for around $5) but I wish they accepted credit cards. I do not like carrying cash and they have one of those ATM machines that charge $4.
If your in the neighborhood and have cash this is a good spot.

Awesome Food

by Sunil C.

Reminds of you of highway joints (Dhabas) in India. Chicken dishes are great and really cheap too. Would strongly recommend lovers of Indo-Paki food to try it.
Not for people who like mellowed down Indian-American cuisine.

Great Indian

by Joanne G. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 560

Shalimar is hands down the best Indian/Pakistani food in the city. They have the best naan ever, as well as tandoori chicken, lamb, etc. I love their chicken tikka masala, as well as the other veggie side dishes. Service is a little abrupt, but who cares since the food is so good. Cheap too.

Indian Treats

by Saloua A. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,292

I love this restaurant and it's the first Indian place I've been to. They have great service, food, and a lot of people love to come here to eat. It's a family-friendly place. My favorite foods they have are the eggplant dishes, the chicken masala, the rice, and of course, the naan (Indian flat bread)! If you want to try a new, exotic cuisine, Shalimar is the place to go!

Great Indian Food

by Philip M. | insider Insider | Rank: 27,120

Shalimar is one of the better indian joints in SF. I will say that if you go for lunch, be ready for an afternoon nap, because the food has a tendency to knock you out. Overall the curries are excellent and from what I hear, pretty authentic.

PROS: Great Indian Food, reasonable Prices
CONS:

My favorite Indian retaurant in SF

by Leona C. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,918

I haven't been to a whole lot of Indian restaurants, but this is the best one that I've been to in the bay area! This is a great choice for large groups. You can order many dishes and try everything! My favorite Indian dish, Chicken Masala, is excellent here! The garlic naan is to die for. The good thing is that there are several locations around the bay area - I have been to the 2 locations in SF, and I hope to check out the one in Union City sometime soon. (I had Naan & Curry for the first time after Shalimar, and it just wasn't as good in my opinion.) Highly recommended if you are in the mood for Indian food!

PROS: affordable, good for large groups
CONS: bit of a scary area, might get crowded

The best Indian food in the Bay

by sangita g. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,248

There's no doubt that Shalimar serves the best Indo-Pakistani food. They receive rave reviews from time to time, but what has amazed me is that their performance is really consistent. They now have several branches throughout the bayy. It's in a shady part of town - Tenderloin, but the restaurant and the street is crowded with customers making it feel safe enough to hang out late. They are open pretty late on weekends (1 am). there's a garage across the street that offers cheap parking. Don't miss their lamb chops, sheek kabab and tikka masala. Highly recommend.
