I love this bookstore but have such a qualm about going in there and upsetting the lazy bastard sitting at the check out counter I don't usually bother. The bookstore has tons of books at great prices, so many so that it can be overwhelming and confusing and a little help would be nice... or just someone who likes people - that would help. I really hope the owner finds another employee and realizes how much business he is losing and if I find out he is the owner I probably won't step foot in there again.

The Bookstore appears to be a magnificent store with many great books. The only down fall is the lazy, rude evening staff. I entered the store with my 20 month old daughter on Saturday 9-12-09. I said hello to the 20-30 year old young man at the front desk, and asked for a specific book. This book was printed in 2007 so I hoped this used book store would have a copy in good condition. Mind you they have tens of thousands of books on the shelves, many with settled dust. After I asked my question, the young man at the front quickly glanced at the 100 or so books stacked around him, did not check the computer that sat right in front of him for the book in inventory, and rudely stated, "Nope, haven't seen that one." He did not offer to check his inventory, did not point me in any possible direction to any number of shelves, or ask if I needed further help. He just gave me a rude "tough crap" type look with no further word. Even a "sorry kiss my ass" would have been a better response than the look I got. I have to admit, I did enter the store 10 minutes before closing, but didn't think I took any action to deserve this treatment. I was dumbfounded, and immediately walked out of the store without saying thank you of course. If my young daughter hadn't been with me, I would have given this jerk a piece of my mind. I would give this store a high rating, if they would lose the lazy man on the evening weekend shift. I will not go back there or recommend this store to anyone.

When you approach this store from the outside nothing prepares you for the mountains of books you will find inside. Upon walking through the door you are greeted by that ??book? smell as thousands (perhaps a million but who would stop to count) and thousands of books await your review. I was visiting on a slow and overcast day so I had the shop to myself. Jazz music played softly through out the store and it was just warm enough to be comfortable. I wondered for a moment if I was alone in the store until I spotted the store employee buried behind a stack of books...she smiled and greeted me warmly.

I had come in with really nothing in mind but soon got down to task exploring this store. The travel section caught my eye and I picked up two books on Turkey that I just had to have. Then over to the cookbook section for a book on Indian cuisine. The world religions section held hundreds of books I wanted but I restrained myself and just picked up a book on Pagan holiday traditions. Then it was over to the music section where I found 3 very useful books on teaching the recorder to grade school children...something I am struggling to do. The children's book section was a tad overwhelming with the number of choices that it held. I ended up buy a set of Thomas the Train books and some shapes books. Upon checking out the cashier wrote up my bill and gave me change for a quaint register. Over all I'd have to give this book store two thumbs up for selection and prices.

A true hidden diamond in the rough in Chico.
