I had been taking my dogs to Dr. Domotor's for many years and unfortunately when my dogs got sick they were unable to see them right away. I was in search for a new vet and decided to go to VCA. I had adopted a new dog which came down with kennel cough. My first visit here was great however when I had to go back it was the most horrible experience. My two other dogs were not vaccinated for kennel cough so they both got it.
When I got up one morning one of my dogs was not putting any weight on her front leg. I called VCA and they were able to take her that same day. I had to work that day so I had a family member take her to her appointment. I did specify to both my mom and the front desk staff that she did have a history of arthritis and that she did have kennel cough. During the exam the vet found that she had a high temperature and was dehydrated. The vet ordered x-rays (which I understand), blood work (which I know they need to do in order to prescribe the pain meds) and IV fluids. The things that I felt they did not need to do was a urinalysis, a tick panel and charged me for biohazard waste.
When I spoke with the vet over the phone to discuss her lab results I was so upset. She told me that my dog's WBC count was high and she was a little concerned about that and wanted to do another blood test in a couple of weeks . Of course it was high she was sick and her immune system was trying to combat the kennel cough. Another question was if my dog had such a high temperature during the exam why was the subject of hospitalization not even discussed? I also did not understand why she ordered to do a tick panel to check for tick paralysis if she knew that my dog had a history of arthritis and I did have my pet on advantix. I know this is not a 100% sure thing at keeping ticks off my dog but I think that with her history and with the advantix she should have taken the x-rays first and if she didn't see anything she should of ordered this test not order to do everything all at once. Needless to say I just felt taken by this place and have not been back since.

For cats go see Dr. Prescott (who has over 20 years experience) or Dr. Shaw. We have been taking our pets there for over 20 years.

Both Dr. Prescott and Dr. Shaw are genuinely concerned about your pet. Their staff is usually very professional, especially the office manager, Patty. They will try to get you as much information you need when calling about your pet. Their AHT, Tina is very sweet and is also very kind with your pet.

Their prices of course, aren't supercheap but ask them for an estimate if you are worried about the charges. Dr. Prescott is a general practice veterinarian and will refer you to a specialist when the need arises. They are very kind when you have to put a pet down, you may stay with your deceased pet as long as you like. They even wrapped our little kitty (who was 17) in his favorite blanket for his trip to the crematoriam.

Unfortunately, their excellent surgeon, Dr. White has moved on and is now located elsewhere in Monrovia. He successfully performed surgery on all of our pets, most recently a diaphratic (sp?) hernia. Our cat can now jump and breathe normally which he was not able to do prior to the surgery.

I got a puppy a few years back and I immediately set about finding a good vet. Lo and behold, I found a great one just a few blocks from my house. The VCA is well-qualified, clean, and knowledgeable about all the current condition, medicines, and problems. They are helpful in reminding you of appointments and when shots and check ups are due. They even help out over the phone when you have a question or two. The nurses are friendly and helpful and so are most of the doctors, even though there are a few that appear grumpy and unhappy to be around animals . . . strange for a vet. The place is sterile and not as comfortable as it could be, but I am not looking for a Holiday Inn, but a competent provider of health care for my pup. I get that and more.

PROS: Great service, convenient location
CONS: Sterile, uncomfortable at times

My wife and I have four cats, and we have been taking them all (against their will) to Dr. Andrea Shaw at VCA Santa Anita for the past year or so. She is very gentle and truly caring, and tries to make the cats feel as comfortable as possible. She is also very thorough with her exams, and patiently answers all of your questions. We highly recommend Dr. Shaw for all of your veterinary needs.
