Do not open a tab at this bar, the bartender let some strangers order drinks on my credit card. Their receipts don't list what you're paying for, so they hope you'll have a few drinks and sign without any hassle at the end of the night. When I asked the server about the charges, she got defensive and went and told the head bartender. He then called a security guard smaller than me to escort me out (hilarious). I told the guard not to worry, I was glad to get out of there and was definitely not coming back. I never did sign the check, so now I have to dispute the final charges with my credit card company. This place is horrible, they should seriously be investigated.

Been in 7 countries visited many famous Clubs and Bars, but this on is the best place in San Francisco! Their event called "My Heart Beats For... " is the best venue. Their bartender Brian makes the best drinks. Make sure to try his: Tequila, Triple Sec, Lime Juice and Sweet N Sour with a squeeze of lime. Simple, basic, nothing fancy but this blend has a calming effect on the fiery tequila that most people like. The place has cozy look and The Cellar Nightclub is right next door and managed by the same people. I recommend visiting the place and check out their venues and specials! Very friendly, good drink selection, and the best party atmosphere ever!

I came here last Friday for the My Heart Beats For... event with a girlfriend. Surprisingly, there was a really good turnout and alot of beautiful people walking around. I LOVED the gigantic fireplace. The best part of the night were the $5 sangrias and skinny senoritas! Can't really beat that price in SF. Will def be coming back next friday to check out the art scene and get more $5 drinks!!

nice place , nothing special but the drinks are good.
If you are on the way home from a stressed day at work this is a good place to stop.

We went here for Flashback Friday last week. The atmosphere in the dance floor where they were playing 80's music was AWESOME. Everyone was having fun and looking very positive, no heavy hitting-on women, only cheesy tunes from our younger years :-) The other dance floor, playing hip-hop music, was what you might expect from any American nightclub (but still a distinctly classy appearance). I should also say that they treat their Guestlist like VIP's and it's damn easy to get into it - just sign up online! I'm definitely going back and would particularly recommend this place for Europeans fed up with the traditional American dance clubs.

The Cellar is probably one of my many favorite spots and that's because i love the 80's. flashback fridays at the cellar are so much fun. not only does the dj spin 80's cuts, they play 80's movies too. if you happen to get 80'd out.. they also have a hip hop room.

Not sure where MXgirl was the other night, but the Cellar is my favorite club in the city, and it rocks. They've just changed the colors on the wall, and the place looks much bigger. the airconditioning is working better, and the staff is the same staff it's been for a really long time! (where else in the city do you get to go to a bar and know your favorite bartenders will STILL be working there 6 months later...). The doormen - after having you show up 3-4 times over the course of 6 months, WILL REMEMBER YOU! no one is stuck up here. The drinks are strong, a vodka redbull is only $6. rock on. they treat their guest list and bottle service reservations like VIPs, though they could work a bit on the VIP sections (they're in the middle of the club). The crowd tends to be a bit on the younger side, but it's still fun. and SYLVIA is one of the best bartenders in the city. :)

I was thrilled to host my friends going away party at Sugar Cafe! From start to finish the process of organizing the party was in good hands. I spoke with Shiri, the manager, about food, set up, prices, music etc. She was professional and prompt in returning my calls. The night went off without a hitch. The lounge had the perfect vibe for such an event, great drinks too. Thank you to Shiri and Sugar Cafe for making this event a memorable one.

Ok, I am from Orlando, and we do not have the best clubs here, so maybe I was expecting too much! First warning was the bouncer looking at my ID and saying....oooh Arizona. Um, no, can you read?? Florida! When corrected he proceeded to tell me what a horrible day he had. What bouncer have you ever met that actually talks to you let alone tells you his life story??! Then standing in the door way were two trashy boys and I say boys cause they looked about 15. The chick at the door looked like she was ready to pass out from boredom. This place was so trasy and gross, we left after 2 minutes. I have to say I read the reviews and thought this would be a good place to party, but if this is the way people party in San Fran, I would rather be in Orlando! I guess I was expecting "classy LA" but this place...... totally gross!

OMG!!!!!!

What is this #^$@! Honest, the bouners were complete jerks. I was wearing my leather leopard skin pants and almost got turned away. I was there with my girls, not a cute guy in sight....or girl for that matter!!!! And the tunes!??? It was like church on a Tuesday! I wouldn't recommend this place to my grandmother, and she's not alive! So, I think I'll try watch "shark week" on Discovery instead! Save your bones, and jump somebodies instead!

I've gone to Sugar Cafe a few times during the day. The coffee drinks are tasty, and the dessert is to die for! While, the ambiance and people watching can not be beat, the service is lacking. I'm trying to cut the place a break since they're new but I'm growing tired of the staff not acknowleding customers until they're ready, especially when the place is pretty empty and a few of them are just standing around. Work on the service and the place will be just about perfect.

I just want to give a shout out to Ms. Jona, the Asst. Mgr. & all her helpful staff at Sugar for letting use their beautiful bar last night as a venue for an organization I belong to. Everyone, loved the look & feel & just overall sleekness of the place. Besides, that you get beyond the sleekness and at the same time you feel welcomed there...we all had a blast last night & again, thanks to Jona & her excellent staff they made the night even smoother & successful for our big group b/c they were so helpful & accomodating throughout the night. I was told the drinks were pretty dang great too...even though I was trying to keep my wits about me as the coordinator just drinking bottled water throughout the night.
Also, big pluses for the huge movie screen playing movies at night inside & OUTSIDE the establishment...the neat-O factor is high on that one...

I cannot believe how well private party people are treated here! I did not realize how hard it is to book a private party without signing your life away in this town until recently. 50 people may not be a large group to some clubs, but The Cellar people treated us like VIP for our special night. We rented out their side room (which was remodeled I guess and now looks super upscale) in the evening for a $350 bar guarantee -- other places I called tried to make us guarantee $2000!! When they opened to the public at 10pm, we got a few VIP booths at NO extra charge, and they let all of our friends in for free... even the ones that came after midnight! Seriously, no other club in downtown SF will give you this deal -- I checked!

I reserved a table (bottle service) and they put ALL of my friends on the guest list! Not like the club last year I went to that limited my guest list to 6 people per bottle!! Once I got to the club we had are own hostess who was waiting for us at the entrance to accompany us to our table. The music was great. Most of my friends were in the hip hop room but I enjoyed the top hits room. The service was really incredible and we will be coming back soon! Thank you Cellar!

Unbelievable - 80's & Hip Hop with Scoty Fox!!! I love this place and have a great time every time I go! The club is just the right size.. Not too large and not too small. The bartenders and staff are great! They let my friend have his birthday party there at no cost!!!

We just had bottle service here for my boyfriend's birthday and they planning staff completely blew me away. Not only did they let us get ALL of our guests in for free all night, but we got to cut to the front of the line when we arrived. Our cocktail waitress took care of us all night, selling us individual drinks after we finished off the bottle so none of us ever had to wait for a drink. Seriously, if you to plan a fabulous group event where you don't have to spend $900 but get treated like you did, go here. We planned our party through Stephanie, but the whole staff seemed really friendly on the night of. We're going back for New Year's eve!

It looks like their reviews were great after the reopening and have begun to slide. I have to say the crowd was so trashy. There was a disgusting older man actually touching himself on the side of the dance floor while watching a group of girls dance. (no he was not dancing) When we came to pay the cover the doorman told us he would cut us a deal. he brought us around the corner and stuck the $40 (for 5 pretty girls) in his pocket. We know that money never reached the club. How shady. I guess he was 'cutting us a deal' by letting one of us in for free as the regular cover is ten each.
This was my first warning sign. The second was that in the bathroom one stall had an occupant getting sick and in the free stall the toilet seat was actually cracked off from the toilet (it fell on the floor when i went in).
The music was nothing special, any requests that we had were turned down by the unfriendly DJ. Drinks were overpriced and absolutely no eye candy there. The only good things i can say are that the actual bar itself was chic looking as there were rotating spinning bottle shelves and some cool looking ceiling artwork. They would have been better off investing in a new staff and bathroom.

Really don't bother with this place, unless you are new in town and dont know any better or a bridge and tunneler. It is one of the worst bars in the city and they charge a cover.

i may just be getting old but i can't believe how young people who are 21 look these days. which was probably the average age of the clubgoer here, so it wasn't exactly my scene. i liked the dj(s) quite a bit, and the two separate dance floors are always fun for a group with different tastes (the night i went it was 80s on one side, top 40 hip hop on the other) - but unfortuantely in the middle it's quite the trainwreck - you can hear both djs at the same in at least a third of the bar, which is just loud and annoying. i would definitely recommend it for any college students or others of the we-just-started-drinking-in-bars crowd.

Haha, that last review was funny; I was there on friday and think I remember seeing that guy... It was definetely a different scene than the other times I've been there. I asked a bartender and he said there was some fundraiser going on -- so I'm definetely not gonna knock a nightclub for giving some not-so-trendy nonprofit people a place to have their event. After dinner @ Le Colonial, my friends and I came back and it was the usual Cellar madness: cute, financial district guys and 80's, 80's, 80's on the dancefloor.

I would definetely give Cellar another chance -- it always goes OFF around 11:30 or midnight; and pretty much all nightclubs rent out their space during early hours. I've heard that you have to pay close to nothing to have an early event there, probably why so many non-profits pick it.

so the last person that wrote a review talked about some mickeymouse sweatshirt, and a not-so-great crowd... i'm not sure when they were there.... i was there on friday and had a blast! We started off showing up for a happy hour they had. didn't even realize it was to benefit the local YMCA. the fact that they support local nonprofits - totally awesome! We left around 9:30, it was busy and great music (happy hour prices lasted until 9pm!). went out for dinner and decided we wanted to go back and dance some more. we showed up close to midnight and found out that the cover was ONLY $5! where else in the city can you get in for $5?? (downtown!) again - thumbs up! Scotty fox and MCD rock. i like 80s, but they just rocked the house. and there was plenty of eye candy floating about the room. i must say - the place looks like it does in the pictures on the club, and the people look like the people in the pictures. it's real. the bartenders are down to earth, the place is great. they could work a bit on their air conditioning, but then again, no one's perfect. i rather have a chilled martini with great music and be a bit warm, then have a cool club, with a warm martini and blah music.... just my 2 cents! cellar people - i love you :)

Pros: cover, music, atmosphere

.

Went there on a Friday night to check out the '80s night but was totally disappointed. The music was great but the atmosphere wasn't like the pictures on the website at all nor were the reviews I read. Maybe I went a little too early but the crowd wasn't the typical club crowd but instead felt like I was in a far east country. Some guy had on a Disneyland's Mickey sweatshirt! After some people watching (no eye candy at all) and a couple of drinks, we left. Perhaps it picks up after in the late evening but I didn't want to stay to find out.

After getting more and more fed up with the mean security, stuck up crowds, and the same overplayed music normally associated with downtown nightclubs, The Cellar stands apart like an oasis. They attract a friendly, energetic crowd that's not going to turn up their noses at fellow dancefloor guests, nor will their staff roll their eyes as they pour your fifth vodka-cran. Their Friday night 80's party, "Flashback" beats all the other 80's parties in town because the DJs play a great blend of hits as well as forgotton, "omigod it's been SOOO long since I've heard this" songs. They always have hip hop in the side room for your friends that can't make it through a night without hearing some Justin Timberlake or Jay-Z. It's pretty much the safest bet downtown if you're showing friends a night on the town -- nothing intimidating about this place and ALWAYS and a crowd pleaser.

Pros: Unpretentious, great to take a crowd

Cons: Gets so busy you need to get there early!

.

The music is great Sunday nights, easy going atmosphere. The bartender is awesome and drinks were really reasonable.

I highly recommend this as a Sunday night hangout. Great way to get the week kicked off!!!!

In response to the last post, the back room was closed on that date for remodelling, and thus the front room was a hybrid of hiphop / 80s etc. The back room is now open again, and completely remodeled. The front room is back to a pure 80s format, and the back room is hip-hop. I suggest you try it one more time. Thank you-----Scotty Fox

A big group of us went on an 80's night when the side room was supposed to be hip hop. There were a couple of 80's songs, but more early 90's, such as Beastie Boys, Sir Mix A Lot and such, which was still cool, but I think we were expecting more typical 80's dance songs. The side room was much smaller than expected and it was the same music being played in there....they brought in some hip hop songs later in the night before closing. So, it was cool, but not what I expected, I just wanted to put out there what I wish others woulda mentioned in their reviews. The "hip hop" room was more of an alcove which couldn't possibly play different music without it getting all mixed in with the main room music. And 80's night is more of an Ecclectic night.

Also, alot of people complained about parking in previous reviews, but we showed up around 11:30pm and all of us found street parking right in front or right around the corner.

Pros: Atmosphere, no line, lounge and dance areas

Cons: no seperate hip hop room, not enough bartenders!

The place played pretty good music, had pretty decent drinks, and ample room on the dance floor to dance, but I don't know...there was just something about it that didn't work for me.

Too hot maybe..I don't know, but I never went back again.

For my friend's birthday, we wanted to reserve a table at a fun club in the city. we called around, and found out that the cellar is the only club that DOESN'T limit the bottle to only 4 people! There were 15 in our group, and everywhere else, they wanted us to buy 4 bottles to get a table together! We called the cellar and they said we only needed to reserve 1! So we showed up and had A BLAST! The DJs were awesome, it was a cold and rainy saturday night, but the girl at coatcheck was totally sweet and we got our table at no time! The DJs were spinning dance and hip hop - AWESOME!. we'll be back soon! :)

how much I should tip the bar tender. They did a very good job, but I feel that the tip are my choice. I worked the service industry also...so, when I don't get tip I don't say a thing. Maybe I was too drunk to tip because the drink were so good strong...

Every time I go here I have the best time! The bartenders are a lot of fun, especially Sylvia, and the drinks are great. I always ended up staying later than planned because I have so much fun there. Fridays are the best night because they have 80's in one room and hip hop in the other room. You can just keep switching rooms when you feel like something different.

Always love partying here. The quality of the drinks are good compared to a LOT of other places and at a good price. Nothing is worst than going clubbing and being served by a bartender who makes crappy drinks. This place has a GREAT bar with bartenders who know how to mix/make drinks. Also had a very good looking crowd!

I was recently at The Cellar on a Friday night. The night started off on the right foot cuz the door staff was friendly with a hot chick dealing with the guest list. The drinks were strong and the bartenders were quick and friendly. The music was pumpin and the crowd was loving it. The DJ even took requiests. The crowd was hot ahd approachable. We will be back for sure.

I was at the cellar last Friday night for a friends birthday party and had a blast! First of all, they have an unlimited guest list, which means all 34 of us got in for free as long as we had our names on the list and were there before 11pm. We took over the area around the pool table which was fun because we could watch the game as well as the dancefloor. On Fridays they spin 80s. I love Scotty Fox on KMEL and I had NO IDEA he spins there every weekend wow how cool! Awesome music. The place isnt pretentious like other spots in the city, and a friend I was with said it look a lot bigger and nicer than what it was a couple of years ago. Were actually thinking we might go there for new years!

I've been to this place a couple of times and it was trash. The crowd was rude, young and completely immature. The last time I went, a group of girls, followed me around trying to compete on the dance floor. Why? I really don't care. The DJ was not good enough to inspire me to dance, so perhaps they thought I was an easy target. Overall, it took too long to get a drink. There was little room to lounge. It was unnecessarily hot and the music was garbage. I would not recommend this place to anyone with a moderate amount of class or creativity.

A friend and I were in SF for the weekend and went to The Cellar as it was only a block from our hotel and they had 80's night on Fridays. We got there before the cover charge and found a seat at the bar. The music was awesome, 80's all night on the far side of the club (not pool table side). Lots of people dancing and having fun. There were all types of people here. Anyone, literally, could have fun here. Lots of hot guys to check out as well. Never a dull moment at this bar.

The bartenders were great and poured very good drinks. They'll create a brand new drink for you right there on the spot, ask for Sylvia!

I would definitely go here again on 80's night in a heartbeat.

Seriously!!! Its been a couple of years since Ive been to the cellar. Used to be my favorite little neighborhood bar, cant really call it that anymore!! The rooms are more spacious, they have really awesome lights, the bar itself looks awesome the way they have all the bottles lit up, and its pretty impressive how they have 2 rooms right next to each other, and the sound doesnt travel from room to room. The bartenders are some of the nice bartenders Ive ever come across. Regardless of how crowded it is, theyll always smile, answer questions, recommend drinks and even mix up a surprise if you ask for it. I just love this place! I cant believe its been so long since Ive been here! Am definitely coming back!

On weekends, the cover is always pricy. The crowd has always been very B and T and the music has ranged from bad to horibble. The main room has the best in top 40 cheese trance, think 92.7 'Party' gag . The back room place decent hip hop, but its always packed and the people are usually losers. During the week, experience is a little better. . I'd say avoid the place like the plauge on the weekends. Unfortunately, since their recent remodel, weekdays have gotten bad as well. I recently went there midweek and walked downstairs at around 10 pm. We had several people and the bouncer wouldnt let us in without a $10 each cover. There was not a soul inside, and he wouldnt deal. Thats pretty weak. Do yourself a favor and check out Swig, R Bar, Element or Vertigo, all within close walking distance.

WOW I checked out the all new Cellar last weekend for their pre-opening party since the total remodel. Let me tell you, what a difference! This place has been redone from the floor up! Great new sound system, more room and a great crowd! If you liked the Friday night 80's from before, you are going to love it now! Of course dont forget the hip hop room in the back. Even with the total remodel, the drink specials keep getting cheaper! The weekends I am sure are going to be packed again!
