Went to Puerto Alegre on a Friday night with a bunch of friends -- luckily we made a reservation otherwise we would have waited forever! \n\nThis place is definitely fun and great for groups. The ambiance is very lively -- they even have a mariachi band play for your table if you'd like.\n\nThe food is great! I ordered a combo plate (shared with a friend) and LOVED the tostada with shredded beef. I generally don't like shredded beef as it's usually pretty dry, but this was amazing. The spices, marinade, flavor!!! YUM!\n\nWill definitely be back.

Though the wait was about 30 minutes... we just wandered off to a local dive bar for a drink... then back to the restaurant some really good margaritas!!! well worth the wait.

I love this place! Not only have I been coming here for a good solid 8 years, any friends or family that come into town I take here. The food is always cosistently good, the margaritas, awesome! I always laugh to myself when people walk away that don't won't to wait 45 min for a table. They have no idea what they're missing. We're not waiting in line for fun. It's really for the margaritas!\n\n\n

I don't know why people say this place is cheap as the prices are in the upper end for Mexican in the neighborhood. I had a good time though.

Pros: Fun atmosphere if you come with a big group

Cons: Kind of expensive for mexican and only so-so quality

My boyfriend loves this place-- he's been going here for years and loves their margarita's and food. Me? I could care less-- I'm no snob but the food does not justify the wait for a table. Last night was the last straw for us-- we waited for 10+ minutes at their podium with the ""please wait to be seated"" sign, wanting to put our name on the wait list. The place was half empty and all the waiters were lazily cleaning/prepping tables. At least 3 of them walked past us several times without even acknowledging us. We are not newbie's, we know the drill-- the place always requires a bit of a wait, but COME ON. No acknowledgement? Even the boyfriend was ticked off. We decided to take matters into our own hands and just plop ourselves into a booth. Wow-- that was all it took to finally get someone's attention and we were told that people were waiting for the tables (though they must have all been at one of the various bars nearby because NO ONE was outside). When we told them that it wasn't cool just to keep us waiting here (ESPECIALLY when it wasn't even busy), and that they could have at least said ""hey sorry we're a little busy we'll be right with you"". They chose to ignore basic customer service and told us ""that's why the sign says 'please wait to be seated' and didn't even ask if we'd like to be added to the list. Needless to say we left and went to a different Mexican restaurant two blocks away that has MUCH better food and customer service. I know this town is dying for more sit-down Mexican restaurants, but this one isn't worth the ice they put in their half-ass margarita's.

Pros: Neighborhood convenience, the food and drinks for some people

Cons: For me, the food, drinks, and service.... or well, I guess EVERYTHING.

Since moving to SF a few months ago, I'd been looking for a place with good Mexican food where you could also have a margarita. This was the first one I found, and it was surprisingly good. First, however, my party had to wait a good half hour past the time of our reservation to be seated. After that, all four of us were happy with our meals; the margaritas were stronger than I expected but still good. I would say this is a fun place to go with a small group - it's small, very crowded, and noisy, but that's kind of what creates the atmosphere. Service wasn't top-notch, but I wouldn't expect that in such a busy place.

From the get go this place is bad. The hostess was so rude that we wanted to leave immediately but one of the people in our party assured us the food was worth it. We waited forever, the service was slow and the food was mediocre at best. I don't know what the people who gave it a good review ordered but we sure didn't get it. The margartias weren't bad but three of the four of us agreed they're not good enough to get any of us to go back.

Puerto Alegre has great food including giant, delicious burritos smothered with cheese and sauce (you definitely have to use a fork). The margaritas are also excellent. We've gone several times and the food and service were consistently good. Also, the decor is great. The red leather (or faux leather) booths are comfy and give the place a relaxed, old-school feel. Highly recommended.

Authentic food, great margaritas, and a staff that won't lead you wrong. All the flavors of Mexico accessible to anyone who speaks English, something you won't always find behind the counter in the Mission District. The lines may be long but that's because there is no pressure to immediately turn over tables. So if you want to linger a couple of hours, you've earned it. Prices have inched up, but you get great value and those fantastic margaritas.

10 Years in San Francisco, and we've never found a more charming, more fun, and better restaurant than San Francisco. From the gracious host, to the mariachi bands, to the fantastic food (MOLE!), to the best margaritas we've ever had -- we promise to spend every special occasion here.

If you want good cheap Mexican food this is the place! The margaritas are pretty average. They would be better if they used fresh squeezed lime juice instead of a generic mix and had a better selection of tequila. It can be annoying with the mariachi bands that allways come through but hey, thats part of the Mission! Allways crowded at night so get there early or be prepaired for a wait. You can allways order food at the bar if you can't get a table.\n

Vintage, Cozy- this place is homey and the atmosphere is fun. Yes it gets packed in the weekends and nights, but that is a good sign... isn't it? It is worth the wait, believe me. The Margaritas are incredible and are a good deal. The food is traditional and delicious (try the Camarones a la diabla, Huevos Rancheros). The service is great, everyone is so nice. The only downer is the parking! But this place is really worth it all.... By far the best mexican restaurant in the city.

Pros: Margaritas, Food, Atmosphere/Service

Cons: Parking, The wait on weekends

.

The food is definitely decent, but it's the potent margaritas and strolling mariachi band makes this one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city. Always a fun time. The only downer is that you'll have to wait at least an hour for a table on weekend nights. Avoid the crush and instead come for brunch -- the huevos rancheros are yummy and so in the menudo.

On a Friday night we waited over 1 hour and 45 minutes to receive a table. The restaraunt uses an archaic system to seat people. Instead of simply taking your name they gave you a weird ticket and no one ever knew when their table was ready. So it constantly led to us and others being skipped over (possibly by accident) and other customers being seated who hadn't waited as long. The place was understaffed and the host was inconsiderate and a liar. He constantly told people to wait outside and he would come out and tell them when their table was ready, which he never did. The restaraunt's awful system amounted to a frustrating wait and an unpleasant atmosphere with people clawing at each other for a table. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

The food is amazing here! You can choose from their combos or make your own and it couldn't be more afforable. Large portions of delicious food. The margaritas are tasty (you don't realize how strong they are until later). If you can find parking, it's definitely worth it! There can be a bit of a wait at dinner time so show up a little early. Best Mexican food in the city hands down.

I like my Mexican food smothered with cheese, sauce, and other gooey accompaniments. No fresh-mex pinto beans for me. Puerto Alegre satisfies this craving. Good chips, good food, dirt cheap. Also, they have some interesting, more authentic dishes, like nopales (cactus) and an interesting dessert place with Mexican hot chocolate. The only down side is the endless succession of mariachi bands who pander incessantly at your table. They'll stick their hand right in front of your face and leave it dangling there for a few minutes, asking you if you liked their performance. Kind of awkward. If they got rid of this, it would be much better.

The food isn't authentic and it isn't good. The burritos come out mojado whether you like it or not, the contents are bland, the tortillas are soggy, the salsa (all one variety) comes out tasting exactly like Pace - ketchup with a few cilantro leaves floating around - so I think the other negative reviewer is right - any hype about this place must be about the margaritas, not the food.

Puerto Alegre is an old favourite of mine - some great, inexpensive food (Enchiladas with Green Mole Sauce is a personal favorite), and huge pitchers of delicious and strong magaritas make for a great night out. The lively atmosphere and Mariacis also help. This place is very popular, so there is often a long wait for a table (they take reservations only for large groups), and sometimes the service can be a little slow - but is always pleasant and polite. Recomended.

The are about 2 dishes on the menu that are pretty good and brunch is good. The rest of the food is marginal at best. They do have good margaritas - strong and tasty (but too many with the cheap tequila they use will definitely cause a hangover) and the mariachi music is sort of cute. Besides the food, the service is consistenty terrible -- you might wait 2 days for your check. This place used to be one of my favorites in the early 90's when it was touted as Salvadoran food - not sure what happened or what the hype is all about, unless it is really about the margaritas.

If you want great tasting authentic Mexican food with the best margarita's at inexpensive prices, Puerto Alegre is where you want to go.\nIt's totally cheap! you get lots of food and drink for your money. More important though, it's good food and good service. It's family owned and operated, and that always makes a difference!\nIt's pretty popular and you might have to wait a while, but it's worth the wait and you can go next door to Blondie's, have a drink and work up your appetite while you wait to be seated.

Well-prepared food with flavor--not wimpy and bland. Good meat. I just wish they hadn't retired my favorite breakfast: machaca beef with scrambled eggs (best with enchilada sauce on top). Bring it back!!!!!

The margaritas here are always AWESOME! We watched our bartender pour about 2/3 to 3/4 of a bottle of tequila into the blender. After being stuffed from the food we still managed to drink the pitcher we ordered. It's a great place to go with friends but not if you're in a hurry. Service is slow and sometimes non-existent (it's been that way every time we've gone there). But the cheap eats and strong margaritas outweigh the service issues.

As well-worn as a beloved living room couch, this homey restaurant boasts a vintage pinball machine, a rock-heavy jukebox and a crowd to match--and most importantly, stellar margaritas. Despite operating in a neighbohood that's saturated…
