getting past the front desk
I like this hospital , it's been there for a very long time and i like the father, son practice. I like the variety of choices in doctors. They all would get each others opinion for the best out come. However , the front desk, actually one person in particular , is rude and seems very angry at everything and or anything. I don't really give a %#&* if it's a bad day, I expect professional service for the money i spend there, and i have witnessed how she treats her co-workers which, by the way are extremely professional and so very caring. On several different visits I have witnessed them having to apologize for her attitude . it's got to be very embarrassing. I love this place but I dread having to deal with her. I was shocked to hear how long she has been employed there , wow !! I do recommend taking your pet there, but , I would schedule my appointment on her day off.

Very Good Service!
I have been going to the Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital for 17 years first with my cat and now with my new puppy. I have always found the front desk staff to be very helpful and professional. I have seen several different vets there over the years and have always been happy with the care with which they have treated my pets. I would highly recommend them to every pet owner.

We LOVE this place!
We have old cats (14+ years old), and have been taking them to the LFSMH for a total of 10 years (other 4 yrs were when we lived in the SF Bay Area and there was an animal hospital literally across the street). The vets and the staff are ALWAYS professional and courteous, and our cats are in exemplary shape for the "little old men" that they are. They are starting to show signs of old age, but at 14+, that's to be expected. The hospital isn't cheap, but they know us and our cats, and there has never been a complication of any sort, even when we had to pay over $800, or $600, etc. for tests/operations, etc. They also provided a reference for a cat sitter for when we had to go out of town for an extended period of time; the cat sitters are EXCELLENT, too, and we use them whenever we need them.
We rate Los Feliz Animal Hospital VERY HIGHLY and we would recommend them to anyone. We feel very sorry for the others who have had bad experiences, and can understand their anger--their pets are loved ones, and they want the best for them. But we have never had a bad experience there.

We are VERY fussy about our Cat and we have found that LFSMH is GREAT - they tell us what we needed to do for our cat's thyroid problem - they write us prescriptions when we need them and allow us to get his medications less expensively through 1-800-PetMeds. They've never told us that we need any certain tests except bloodwork on his every 6 months to monitor his thyroid which I appreciate! The wait times are short, and the staff friendly. We LOVE them and will definitely continue to use them!

Wouldn't recommend
Staff and doctors are fairly friendly but the cleanliness/sterility of the office is questionable, as is their knowledge.
I started going here because it is close to my home but I think I will try to find another vet.

HORRIBLY OVER PRICED and MORE
took my kitten in for runny poo....
300 dollars later she is better...
they gave her tons of meds, fluid, etc but no explaination as to what was wrong...
none of it worked....
took her to my regular vet and with a 5 dollar medication to harden the stools she is better...
THIS PLACE IS A SCAM

This place is awful. Love your pet? Go somewhere else.
My girlfriend took our cat here when we suspected a bladder infection (she is a Registered Nurse.) She said she was treated very badly from the beginning. She told me the doctor told her that she probably does not take care of the cat and was scolding her. I thought that perhaps she was exaggerating a little. 6 months later, I brought the cat back when I noticed some peculiar behavior from our pet and thought it best to be preventative. I went in and the doctor starts yelling at me. He was terribly accusatory. I was shocked because I just got there and he had nothing to base this on. I was on my way out of town in an hour, so I wanted to leave the cat for observation. He told me (in the first few minutes, after just feeling the cats bladder without doing any tests, and without noticing any irregularity with the bladder) that he might have to operate. I told him to do an observation and run any tests and that he could call and let me know. He started getting rude and that he would not stand by while I was out of town if he had to cut the cat open and have surgery and could not get a hold of me. I got stern and said, "You can at least TRY calling my cell phone, first." He kept talking about surgery and was not going to let the cat suffer because I was out of town. I would have walked out with my cat if I was not on the way to the airport. Anyway, in the end, there was absolutely NOTHING wrong after a two day observation. The bill was $350, that is after I complained about he $500 initial bill (not including the 2 day boarding.) The kicker is that I never ONCE had the impression that they even cared about the pet, or the outcome of the pet. I checked the reviews out and everyone has had the same experience. They need to get rid of the bitterness and rudeness (and the rip-off pricing) and start caring a bit about what they are doing or change professions. Why suggest probably surgery without any information, testing or observation. Shame on Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital. I wonder if other people are pressured into subjecting their pets on to unnecessary procedures from scare tactics. Pet owners, go somewhere else if you care about your pet (and your wallet.)
PROS: none

I, too, experienced dishonest and overpriced...
visits. They told me that my cat needed open heart surgery for a hernia around her heart for $5,000! I got a 2nd opinion and the vet told me that there was nothing wrong with my cat (who is still alive 8 years later!) The surgery alone would have put the cat's life at risk. I didn't learn the 1st time, though... I went back because they are literally down the street from me. They charged me $300 for a castration. Ridiculous! I threatened to let the Better Business Bur. know and they gave me $200 back to keep my mouth shut.
Finally, they tried to charge me $800 when my cat fell ill (I rushed him there because I thought it an emergency, otherwise I would have skipped them by now)... when I realized that he wasn't going to die, I took him out of there. $300 later, no less. He had the flu only. What in the hell could the other $500 have been for?
I think they are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to ripping off pet owners. They will get caught one day!

Nice and competent, but way too rough.
My kitten had Feline Leukemia, and I brought her in because she was peeing in her sleep. I was kind of surprised at how hard the vet squeezed her during the exam, and at one point she yelped in pain. Then the technician grabbed her rather forcefully I thought, and took her into the back room for tests. When I took her home, she started breathing rapidly. A day and a half later, she was still breathing rapidly, so I took her back in, and x rays showed she had fluid in her lung, in addition to cancer throughout her body - basically untreatable - so I had her put to sleep, to end her suffering. Thinking back, I do believe that she was handled too roughly, especially for a sick kitten. I wonder if she was squeezed too hard and something ruptured, leading to her death. I know that she would have died eventually anyway, but still I am never going here again, and will only trust vets and staff who know how to handle animals gently.

"Morality Police" at LF Small Animal Hosp.
In my search to find a vet close to my home, I chose to take my new dog to LFSMH. I saw the jr. Dr. Costin, and on the first visit, when I said that I wanted to spay the dog right away, he responded, "Well, while it's not my job to guide your moral compass.....". I should say it isn't! After 2 visits (the 2nd at his request), 2 sets of xrays and ultrasounds, he was not able to make a definitve statement as to whether or not my dog was PREGNANT. "I think she is probably not pregnant," is not an acceptable diagnosis.
I'm looking elsewhere.

Terrible -- same experience!
The vet I saw implied that I took bad care of my dog, and predicted that my dog didn't have long to live. It's three years later, and she's as alive as ever. The vet ignored my information about a long-term poisoning my dog and I had just suffered. I wasn't feeling well, and hadn't showered that morning, and the vet seemed to hold me in contempt because of the way I looked that morning. I'm a lawyer, for chrissakes, and she was trying to make me feel inferior to her. What a horrible, horrible place.

Mediocre and expensive
I totally agree with the bad reviews others have written and they are definitely not a smear campaign. I think the good reviews are probably written by the nurses there because I can't imagine anyone having a good experience at this place. Here are just 2 stories of many I've experienced - After spending $1500 on expensive and invasive diagnostic tests to find out the cause of pain in my dog's side, the Los Feliz vet said he couldn't help me and sent me to an internist. She diagnosed the problem as gas and also found worms. She put my dog on a high fiber food and treated the worms and he's fine! She also found a heart murmur never diagnosed because in the 5 years I've been going to the LFSAH they've never checked his heart! The Los Feliz vet also refused to write a diagnostic letter to my pet insurance company explaining the situation so I could get reimbursed for his needless tests. He almost had me convinced the dog needed an MRI! All he had to do was ask me what I was feeding him and have a look at his stools. I think the place has gone downhill in the last couple of years. And it's so expensive! I never come out of there without spending at least $300. It's test this and that and everything is $100-$150 and it adds up. My cat was very sick a couple of months ago and she was admitted in the evening and died in the morning. They charged us $800 for a few tests and the overnight stay! I've found a new vet that is absolutely fantastic and we're never going back to the Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital again. Thank God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I trust this Vet!
Just had my pup neutered at Los Feliz small animal hospital. I'm a first-time pet owner and they are understanding of my anxiety about the whole process. They didn't try to sell me any unnecessary bloodwork. They were clear about what they would be doing to my pet. Overnight observation was included in the price. I also had them microchip my dog and the total cost for the neuter + microchip was $350. That's pretty standard for vets from what i've researched.
As per the negative reviews below, my guess is that sometimes people are really defensive about their pets, and can sometimes shoot the messenger if the diagnosis is bad, or expensive.
Los Feliz Small Animal Hosipital is my vet, and i'm happy with them and they have my trust.

Great Service, Thorough Exam, Friendly Staff
I too think the previous reviews are a smear campaign. Mostly because the exact same reviews are cut and pasted into judysbook.com and cityguide.com. Anyway, I think they're great. I took my dog in when I found some lumps on his underside. When I went to Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital not only did they check the lumps, but they went above and beyond and asked me about any other problems he was having a gave great advice on how to care for my pup now that he's getting older. Everything from how to choose a good food to help him lose weight to the proper treatment for his arthritis. They were great, and the whole visit took less than a half hour and cost less than $50. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Smear Campaign
I think the previous reviews here must be some sort of deliberate smear campaign. Los Feliz Small Animal Hospital is fantastic. I have been taking my dogs there for years and have always received first rate and well-priced care. We moved house to Hollywood and went to several of the vets around there but now make the trip to Los Feliz because we think they are so good. Our Boxer recently had a cancerous tumor removed. WE took him to three different vets and got wildly different prices. Los Feliz was not only the cheapest but also the most diligent. Out dog is now fine. The staff there are great. They always love and care for our dogs. I'm appalled at the other reviews. I suspect it's a rival vet who's writing these reviews to try and smear the competition.

Over priced, Dishonest, Disrespectful
When I first got my puppy ,I took my pug there for a nail that was partially broken off afraid that I would hurt his paw if I clipped it off at the break. They charged me $150.00 for it and wrapped it in a special 30.00 splint. Now I realize that sometimes happens and when it does you can get a powder from the pet store that immediately stops bleeding for less than $10.00. I boarded them once there in an emergency and they questioned everything my other vet , who has a fabulous reputation, was doing. Without calling and verifying a pet record that was missing and they should have noticed upon check in, they without authorization prescribed shots and an emergency flea shot as well as put advantage on the pug with a severe history of skin irritations after he had already had his dose of advantage that month, which was very unhealthy to over prescribe to a special needs dog. They accused me of not taking care of him which made me feel terrible seeing my dogs are at the vet every other month for something ,and jumped to conclusions because of his itching, not knowing that he had a skin condition . If they would have called his primary vet or me first, they would have seen that he had been in several times that year for his skin condition, hardly neglect. I was repulsed by their behavior and would highly recommend anyone to go anywhere other than there, if its not an emergency. They prefer over billing to quality animal care.
