Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed coming to Urban Grind for over 5 years and I have never encountered rude staff there for as long I can remember, but I guess there is always a first time. YOU EMPLOYEES NEED TO TAUGHT SOME CUSTOMER SERVICE. I came in to study at Urban Grind. I had came from Starbucks and originally, I had no intention to stop by Urban Grind, but I wanted a nice place to study and some desert to eat. Anyhow, after sitting down inside and working on my laptop and drinking my Starbucks coffee - after I had finished drinking it, I threw away the cup and I was ready for desert. I went to the restroom and came back to my seat to finish off what I was doing on my laptop and no moment later, the one employee that was working there had pulled the Starbucks cup out of the trash can and placed it on top of my table without explanation. I turned to him and asked what that was about. He said something that I couldn't make out and he was giving me dirty looks. I felt uncomfortable after that so I packed up and left with disgust and left the cup on another table. I came back the next day to complain to the management that the guy last nite didn't even have the decency to at least be kind and say that foodstuff/drinks purchased from outside are not allowed - I would've had no problem! What ticked me off even more was the manager giving me the vibe that I deserved the disrespect since I brought in a drink from the outside. Hmmm.... I'm not returning to this place until 1) That buzzard who was working the counter last nite is gone and maybe 2) Management changes! and 3) Until they learn how to respect their customers. There are other coffee shops that I could study at. Besides, the coffee stinks - now (it's watery) and their food is terrible now - their panini's aren't what they use to be. I'll return when I see a change for good. For that, I give them now a 2 stars. I used to rate them 3-4. But over the years, I have noticed and down spin.

Pros: Hip artwork on display from artists

Cons: Rude, Inconsiderate Employees Who Don't Give About Their Customers!

A nice cafe/coffeehouse in Hillcrest. Interior is a little stark; outdoor seating is better: tables in front, plus a covered section right next to it. I liked their breakfast more than their lunch: french toast is fluffy with just the right amt of fruit. Good espresso. Restroom has a one-way mirror--kinda freaky watching someone on the other side putting half and half in their coffee. (They SAY it's one way...) Street parking is a little challenging, but it's worth it.

I was in San Diego on business and stopped at the Urban Grind one morning for coffee and eggs. The woman who took my order was rude and beyond impatient. I was the only one in line and she made me VERY uncomfortable as I felt rushed to order. When my "order" was ready, it was not what I had ordered. I explained this to the woman who replied "What would you like me to do, Mam?" in a rude tone. I said "Nevermind, I'm just going to leave." and she replied with "What a waste of time." I just wanted to leave. I didn't even ask for my money back. It was so awful and it ruined my ENTIRE day. I am from Los Angeles and have NEVER experianced such a rude "waitress".
