good pizza, great beer selection, free wireless, nice decor  5 Star Rating - World class

We need more places like Spud's in Berkeley! In addition to tasty pizza they have calzones, sandwiches, salads, wine, an excellent selection of quality beers (in bottles, on tap, and by the pitcher including Trumer Pils and Lagunitas IPA). They also have espresso and coffee bar with pastries and such. The space is large and pleasant: high ceilings, arched windows, lovely dcor, colorful and tasteful large works of art on the walls. There is free wireless internet, as well as computers you can rent for Internet use. There is a separate banquet room which can be rented for parties where they also have live music and comedy shows on weekend nights. There are plenty of tables near outlets to plug your laptop. There is pleasant, varied, not-too-loud music playing. It serves a diverse, family-oriented clientele. The lighting is soft and pleasant. In fact, the interior is so pleasant that it would even be a good candidate for a wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, or similar kind of celebration. It is very tasteful and large and historic-feeling -- seems to be a refurbished historic building.

I live in South Berkeley myself and I think Spud's is owned by a local resident of of this community. Spud's is JUST the kind of establishment that I WANT in our neighborhood. I also would recommend Spud's as a location for hosting a party, event, or fundraiser thats on the casual side but still aims to be nice. The interior is really pleasant and the service fast and friendly.

I will be returning often!

The other guy must have gone on a bad day! 4 Star Rating - Very good

I live around the corner from this place and avoided spuds like the plague because of this other guy's review. We decided to try it out anyway--ordered calzones and they were REALLY good! The crust was excellent. It's a large space and they have live music and free internet. A nice little local restaurant in a neighborhood that needs community and good business coming in. I'd say come on and try it out, get a calzone and you'll like it!

It wasn't worth the wait 1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

The crusts are stacked behind the counter, dry and yeastless, so the crusts are as thin as a cracker, and tasteless. They use cheddar cheese which should be pointed out on the menu somewhere.
When my order was hopelessly screwed up, the man behind behind the counter looked annoyed and said "What do you want me to do?" Since I had just gotten a pizza covered with stuff I didn't order, I thought a re-do wouldn't be a bad idea but he just shoved two dollars worth of coupons at me to use "next time". The place was practically empty, so it can't be blamed on a high pressure environment. Compare it to Zachary's which is packed every night of the week and has never screwed up an order in the 10 years I've been going there. Give Spud's a miss.

Pros: spacious, clean, internet access
Cons: , rude service, bad pizza
