While not the best sushi I have had, it was definitely good enough. Prices were fair, and the eel was pretty damn good if I do say so. Good atmosphere, and a friendly staff, but there were far too many small yuppie children running around. I will come here again.

Freshest Fish, Great Uni, Yakitori Grill Bar, Nice Sake Selection

Deserves to be as popular as it is with experienced sushi diners. There's rarely a wait. A long bar with sushi bar on one end; grill bar on the other. At the grill bar try fresh lobster tails, grilled salmon skin with green onion & burdock root, or spicy skewered chicken. Sushi is always very fresh & nicely presented. The uni has always been sweet & ultra fresh. Nightly sushi & grill specials are posted behind the bar & have always been exceptional. Nice selection of sake & beer. A niice spot for couples, groups & families with children too. Parking can be a challenge, but the food is worth circling the block a few times or parking a couple of blocks away for! There is a lot of activity in the area, and I've never felt unsafe walking to Tachibana or parking on side streets nearby.

This is a solid sushi place. The only one better in the area is Kirala Sushi in Berkeley but the wait there can be over an hour on any night of the week. Tachibana has great service, fresh sushi and a good grill for cooked fish and vegetables. I would highly recommend the seaweed salad.

unpleasant surprise on a special occasion
by tomberkeley
We won't be returning, and unfortunately can't recommend it. We sent something back after tasting it, the server admitted it was frozen not fresh, and the manager wouldn't take the small charge off our bill... ow!
Pros: sorry
Cons: some is frozen

Reminiscient of Tokyo
by stainlessmirk
I think it's the way the floor plan is set up (actually I don't know), this place reminds me a lot of Tokyo itself. I had a great experience here, the food was good and not pricey unlike many Japanese places, great Spicy Tuna HandRoll (my favorite sushi), and surprisingly, not crowded.
Pros: not crowded, inexpensive

Tachi is really tough to beat
by sjc1204
Tachibana serves some of the best sushi in the area. If you focus on the quality and portion sizes of the fish served, it's tough to fined a better place to go. The sushi chefs are very solid in their craft and often remember preferences even if 3 months have passed between visits.
Kirala, in Berkely, does have a better grill and sake bar, but the wait times at Kirala can ruin an evening.
Give Tachi a try.

Come before 8 p.m.

Best sushi experience. My friend and I walked in a little before 8 and was so surprised to see the restaurant half empty--an atypical experience for this usually crowded sushi spot. As a result, the service was exceptional. Our tea cup was never empty, the food came almost instantly, and the noise level was low. The nigiris are excellent as always, with large thick cuts so tender they felt like chilled butter going down my throat.
Pros: Exceptional food, Friendly service, Great neighborhood
Cons: , Crowded

check out kirala
by owenseightball
Tuesday is a great day to go for sushi and Tachibanal is no exception. Try the poki, garlic albacore or the toro. We usualy get the gyoza or the agedashi dofu for an apetizer. Food is good ( slightly over priced) but they are open until 10pm!
Service leaves much to be disired. If it werent for the continual poor service( a standard in the bay area) I would always recommend.

Not Very Good
by greenwave93
The service was terrible (we did have to sit at a table). The fish wasn't very fresh. It wasn't a very good deal. Overall, I cannot recommend this restaurant.
Cons: Bad Service, Expensive

Best in Berkeley
by skywalker77
This is by far the best sushi I've had in Berkeley so far. We sat at the bar and had the excellent sashimi dinner (which came with more than 9 pieces) along with a sampling of other suggestions from the chef. Everything was phenomenol! Prices are a little higher than some, but on par with a place like Kirala.
Pros: Great Food

OVERPRICED SASHIMI
by foodie78
What a disappointment! The $17 dollar sashimi dinner only came with 9 pieces of fish. Miso soup was an extra $2 , side salad $3.95 and white sticky rice $2! What a rip off! Although the fish was very fresh, it didnt quite make up for the fact that service was crappy (when asked what kind of sashimi they had, I got a blank stare) and ambience equal to that of a college dorm cafeteria. With some many other better value sushi places around.why go back? I wont!
Pros: fresh sashimi
Cons: EXPENSIVE for Sashimi, nada ambience, crappy service

great food, atmosphere & value!
by kittin87
Loved the tapas style menu! The blazed duck was tender and sweet - delicious. Chicken stuffed mushrooms we're plump and juicy. Service was both patient and punctual. Don't leave without the deep fried green tea ice cream with rasberry sauce for desert -- it was divine. We'll definitely add this restaurant to our list of favorites.

sushi is divine..
by laney04
my favorite sushi restaurant by far. unpretentious, food is always fresh, friendly service. never a long wait, consistent taste. some of the chef specials not listed on the menu, such as the slightly seared yellowtail, are the best. not to mention probably the cheapest toro you will find around here. i have yet to try some of their entrees, but i've heard they are good as well.
don't forget to save room for their fried green tea ice cream!
