Good Vibrations is a great store for all your sex toy, erotica, condoms, etc. The staff is very helpful and knowledgable. The store is clean and spacious. They have a great selection of higher quality items for all orientations. They also offer classes.

Those of us living in the Bay Area are lucky to be able to walk into the brick-and-mortar of the famous mail-order sex toy store. A friend once remarked that it looks like the Gap--and if by that she meant the open, unembarrassed and even aesthetically arranged presentation of merchandise, she was right. The staff is great--knowledgeable, frank, and friendly, they can give you whatever advice you have the nerve to ask. Woman-friendly, man-friendly, queer- and straight-friendly. Videos for sale and rent ($3.50 a night).

Good Vibrations is probably one of the Bay Areas most famous adult shops, if not the most famous. This location on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley is in a nice, clean neighborhood surrounded by good restaurants and shops. A worker-owned cooperative, the staff is always friendly and helpful without blushing or being creepy or even batting an eye and will give customers their space if they need it. They carry a good variety of vibrators and dildos, books, lubes, videos and other toys for your bedroom.

For this well-known sex toy shop. This is a place that you actually could take your mother, your minister, your best friend, AND your lover. The store is clean, well-lit, and unashamedly right on San Pablo--no weird "Entrance in Rear," no tiny signs, no trying to blend in. It's run by the workers in a cooperative, and they make it their first priority to make everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or level of embarrassment feel comfortable in their store. Salespeople are helpful but not intrusive, and you'll find (most of) what you want.

The goods are of uniformly high quality, since the cooperative values its reputation and makes sure everything actually WORKS before agreeing to sell it. Prices are not cheap, but not terrible.

People looking for BDSM gear should go to Mr. S in the city, though.

The knowledgeable staff will help you find what you need or offer suggestions on gift items. If that sounds too tame, they also host night classes taught by dominatrixes.

Good Vibrations has that reputation - it's smarter and friendlier than your typical adult toy store. They still carry the same stuff - anal lube, vibrators, and dildoes, but without the feeling that you're doing something bad. Even though the Berkeley store is a little small, they have a pretty good selection of toys and tools, serious and novelty stuff, and books. They also have a great staff, very helpful and non-intimidating.

PROS: Great place to shop for sex toys.
CONS: No the best prices.
