This school is a true gem. I am not a Dual Immersion parent, I have a son in 4th grade here in the SDC program. We are THRILLED with the resources at this school site, the excellent support of the staff and administrators, and the many enriching academic programs available to the kids. My son loves the rich cultural environment and has made lots of friends. This school has a full time on site resource specialist, an entire wing devoted to ABA Therapy, an excellent computer lab, and a PTA and administration that is hard working and dedicated to the success of all students. This is an up and coming school.

Mariano Castro school not only has an excellent Dual Immersion program, it has an excellent staff, teachers with the most training in the district, and the most dedicated parents you will ever see in any school. They say it takes a village to raise a child and Castro school is the village. It is a nurturing enviroment for any child.

The Spanish/English dual immersion program is outstanding. Native Spanish speakers team up with native English speakers -- and with specially-trained bilingual teachers, both groups of students become bilingual and bilterate in a few years. Decades of studies show that bilingual students outperform their monolingual peers in every subject area. As a parent of two children in this program, I have enjoyed seeing their academic and social world open up here. They are flourishing.

Castro School is very progressive with a Dual Immersion program and a wonderful atmosphere of respect for diversity. Teachers are well trained and hard working. They have a great computer lab and many other excellent enrichment programs. A beautiful campus.

I was very surprised by the negative review below (but then looked further & noticed it was a teenager who had made many reviews about schools he/she had no direct experience with).
We have been THRILLED with our experience in the Dual Immersion Program at Castro. We were very selective about our school choice for our daughter who is now in 1st grade.
We wanted an experience for our daughter that would be strong academically, but also rich culturally and interpersonally. At Castro's DI Program, we've found just that. The teachers are innovative and dedicated, and in addition to the great academics, we value the strong community of the DI program. DI parents are very involved and highly collaborative. We could not be happier with our decision.

PROS: It's a private school enrichment program in a public school!
CONS:

My two sons are both enrolled in the Spanish/English Dual Immersion (DI) Program at Mariano Castro Elementary School in the Mountain View-Whisman School District. My eldest son, now in 2nd grade, has been enrolled since Kinder. My youngest is now in Kinder. My eldest is doing very well academically and my youngest appears to be heading in the same direction. My husband and I chose this school for the DI program over other schools in the district and over private schools. As parents, we are well qualified to help our children and offer them enrichment in all areas of traditional education, but we could not give them the very valuable gift of a second language. Not only are my children doing well academically, they are mastering their grade-level skill in both languages. Beyond academics, building friendships in the culturally rich and socio-economically diverse student population has offered our entire family the wonderful opportunity of experiencing first hand that all of us, no matter how different our backgrounds may be, bring our own unique gifts to the life's table. My children are living something more valuable than can ever be learned in books.
