Lexi h should not talk. This has NOTHING to do with manners. Jumping the gun with security does and it scares plus runs off the customers. What the store did was WRONG WRONG WRONG!I have opened milk coffees and drank them in the store BEFORE paying. Ive never had problems. I have noticed the staff getting ruder and more clueless about customer service. The main reason, Filipino staff, lots of filthy pathetic Filipino staff. WOW what a let down!

Ratings_icons let's pay for it first before you drink or eat anything at the store.

I think it's just a matter of manner and common sense to not to drink anything that you haven't paid for. I'm pretty sure they weren't as much concerned about stealing as they were about manner and image of the store. If you're thirsty, you should pay for it first and drink it. Is that so hard to do?

Ratings_icons The staff are rude and the price is higher that other location's

My husband and I are Marukai members and one time we went to this location and had an incident with the staff. We were shopping and selecting bottled tea and coffee and put them in our shopping cart. Because I really needed to drink something so I opened one of those that we were buying and drank a bit and put it back in our shopping cart. We moved on to the rice and grain area. That's when we stopped by a security. We were yelled at and they said some people open the drink and put it back to the shelf. It was obvious that the bottle that I drank was in our cart with the rest of the merchandise that we were buying. It was a staff named "Ari" or could be "Aree" that called the security. We were not stealing. She should have figured that out as the bottle was obviously in our shopping cart. She should have told us directly, didn't need to make a scene by calling security to stop us. We got so upset because of this and felt deeply insulted. We will never come to this location again and might be giving up all the locations, although our membership still has several months left. We will consider going to "Mitsuwa" instead.

I would have given this $10 annual membership Japanese grocery store a 4-stars before but lately I must say it's just a mediocre place to shop for Japanese food and some every day item. It's so obvious they are desperately trying to increase the price and their customer service sucks! There's almost no point in buying a membership since the saving can't justify the $10 like it used to can.

Ratings_icons Everything costs .10 cents more in 2005

I used to recommend this store to anyone who wants to explore the world of Japanese cultures. Not only food, but they also offer furnitures and variety of kitchen/everyday items for $10 membership fee a year. I noticed since Jan 2005, all item in store costs .10 cents more and there are not as much special saving items as before. Things also go on sale less frequently. I can definitely see that they are trying to make more profits these days. If this continues, I will not renew my membership for next year and will just go to Mitsuwa where I don't need a special membership to shop.

Marukai has LOADS of Japanese goods! You can find just about any Japanese food here. There are also great Japanese gifts, home furnishings and appliances. There's also a small section with foods from Hawaii! Saimin, macadamia nuts, cookies! The only drawback would be that you have to pay a membership fee, but it's worth it.

The place for Japanese food and products in Los Angeles. Mass market grocery store which carries almost every Japanese food imaginable, from dry goods and supplies to fresh sashimi. Great place to pick up extremely high quality, fresh sashimi without paying sushi bar prices. Requires a yearly membership, but well worth it if you use lots of Japanese ingredients or food. They also carry appliances like rice cookers, ceramics, and traditional japanese clothing.
