Went here for brunch on Saturday as we have several times before. Decent selection of dishes and not too long a wait. It can be a bit loud but overall a nice, friendly neighborhood restaurant/bar.

I was a regular at the Rex cafe for four years. I went back after the remodel. The place looked nice but it no longer had a comfortable, neighborhood feel. The portions were tiny and the prices were much higher. My friend and I ordered four dishes and it wasn't enough for us. We also got bread and when we asked for butter and olive oil, our waitress replied "The Chef doesn't want you to have butter." I laughed and asked if the Chef was paying for our meal. The waitress proceeded to be rude after telling us that she forgot to place our order. After waiting for more than an hour, our meal arrived. What a joke! 6 pieces of bland gnocchi and a bland burger soaked in grease! Needless to say, we paid our bill and left and went to Za on Hyde for dinner. We won't be back.

Cons: rude service, greasy bland food, arrogant chef, high prices, small portions

So I read somewhere in the SF Chronicle that the former chef de cuisine from La Folie was moving to the Rex. A bunch of us decided to go to try out the new food. It is so much better than the lack luster burgers and pork chop with polenta stodge from before. It's cute and fun food. The southern fried poussin and waffles had me rolling.

The Rex recently closed for 10 days to remodel the dining room and bar. They were also joined by a new chef John Pauley. The menu has also been completely revamped. I went there on re-opening night last Friday and liked it so much, I went back the next night with more friends! Everything I ordered on the menu was wonderful. The dishes are imaginative and fun, they are perfect for sharing so everyone can get a taste of each item. Just like before, the bar is great and the wine list has some really tasty additions! You have to try the chicken and waffles, the linguini with english peas, the pork belly, the fries (!!) and the chocolate cupcake dessert!! Actually, try everything, you will not be disappointed. The prices have not changed significantly, so this is still a reasonable meal considering the neighborhood and the quality of the food you're eating.

I dined here for brunch recently and must say that I was surprised. The brunch food was good...make sure to try a bloody mary! But unfortunately, the service was lacking. The wait to get a table wasn't long at all, but once seated it took 15 minutes for the server to make it over to our table. When asked the server for water (which had to do twice), didn't receive them until after the meals had been dropped off. It took another 15 minutes for the server to bring us the bill once we had finished eating.

the food is awesome! its a little expensive, but its just because of the area it's in. brunch on saturday and sunday can be a little crazy, but the food is awesome and pretty quick. friday and saturday night dinners are super fun. everyone likes to hang out and have a few drinks and have some delicious dinner before their nights on the town begin. come here if you want a fun atmosphere with nice servers, good food, and great drinks!

So you want a couple glasses of wine and a burger....Willing to pay 25.00 for a atomosphere that has declined then I suggest you dine at Rex's Cafe.....
Used to be my favorite neighborhood place to enjoy and dinner...The food is still very good..However due to the Political Correct Police I am not allowed to specifically comment on why I feel Rex Cafe has declined..I believe I am allowed to say the atomosphere has rapidly declined.

Rex Cafe is a good place to dine out late night. The staff are very courteous and friendly to the customers. The ambiance is nice and the food is not bad either. This cafe is good for bringing a date because there are relatively anyone around; therefore, lesser distractions and more conversation involve. Futheremore, I enjoy the onion soup very much there.

One of my favorite places to eat in the city. The enviornment is cozy, the food is always good, and the prices are reasonable. I've never been for the brunch, but the dinner is great! Try their flavored vodka drinks if they have it when you're there.

Rex's is a great place to hang out and lazy over a weekend brunch. We sat outside, so I don't know how the indoor dining goes, but outside, we had prompt and friendly service. They have variations on the classic egg benedict which are outstanding. The ham and jack cheese was good too--fluffy with tons of flavor. Try their Bloody Mary on the side.

This place offers a nice atmosphere with very basic foods - hamburger, onion soup, some salads in the heart of Russian Hill. Not very fancy, and not very expensive, it is a good place to grab a quick bite to eat when you don't want to spend a lot of money but you'd like to sit down at a table and enjoy a reasonably nice restaurant (wood paneling etc) that is not just a diner. People who work there are nice. Again, food is very 'basic.'

PROS: Good Food, Good prices, Nice Neighborhood Feel
CONS: Nothing fancy (if that is a con)

Rex's is great neighborhood brunch spot. The eggs benedict is great. They have 4 different styles of benedict. Rex's also does the basics eggs and omelets well. They also have a few tables outside and with the big front windows open.....inside is outside.

Rex's is also a great neighborhood dinner spot. Their chicken penne paste is to die for. I am a huge fan of the Rex's salad and their spinach salad. I would also recommend their steak. It is the special on Saturday night's (3 course fixed price meal). They also have no corkage fee Sunday - Thursday.

Don't bother with Rex Cafe. The service is awful. It took the wait staff over ten minutes to figure out who was servicing our table. Then it took another 40 minutes for our drinks (which was a soda) to arrive The waitress also passed our table several times without making eye contact or refilling our water glass. The food arrived in a timely manner but the quality was below average. It was a waste of time to go to Rex Cafe.

Nice local hang out - food is average, not wonderful. But it offers a nice option to go to on a weekday evening when it's not too crowded.

Pros: Neighborhood-y, Great food

This great neighborhood place has been somewhat overlooked but certainly not by the locals that flock to its rib-sticking nightly offerings. The dinner specials are particularly alluring, with half a roasted chicken, flavored with black…
