Lobster at $3.99 each! What's not to like about that, especially when its preparation is so tasty?
A friend and I went to Ocean Star to celebrate Girls' Night Out and ordered the lobster special (and a scallop & vegetable dish that was delicious). We were (1) disappointed and (2) outraged. What we got for $3.99 was the end of the tail (where it fans out), the end of the head, part (and only part) of a claw, and the body part. Almost nothing to eat. When we asked about where the rest of the lobster was -- specifically the meaty part of the tail and the claws, we did not get a satisfactory answer. All we were told was that it was a small lobster. Hello! The good parts weren't there.
The Chinese couple next to us had a lobster, and the amount of lobster on their plate was twice what we had.

We'll never go there again, which is a pity, as the flavor of the food was good. And I used to love their dim sum.

About 1 1/2 years ago we went to Ocean Star based on a friend's recommendation and liked it a lot. The service was good. The food was excellent. We had a great time.

Since then, we've returned twoce and both times have been amazingly disappointing. I don't know if we just got crazy great seating last time or the right hostess, but service has been utterly slow to non-existant. The food we got on our second visit was actually cold when we got it and not very tasty. I'm going to give them one last chance, but for now I'm going to stuck with the Empress Pavillion.

a very poor rating due to service! I don't know if I had bad service due to me not being Chinese but based on the reviews I think it's across the board. When I first came in and was brought tea, the white tea container was spotted with tea leaves and was obviously dirty. I actually wanted to leave right then, but the place was pretty crowded around 10:30 a.m. so I thought I would still give it a try. The cart girls were very nice. I did NOT have any customer service issues with the cart girls...BUT the MALE waiters,, ALL OF THE MALE WAITERS are very rude. In the end, I asked for to go containers and one of the male waiters kept on saying ok you pay me now, you pay me now $15 you pay me now VERY VERY RUDELY and he rolled his eyes, as I was packing things in my hand. I asked him can I pack my food first. He said because we are busy, you pay me now. I will never come back ever again do to the service!!!!!! The food wasn't too bad, but not great!!! All of the individual portion size were way too small leaving the texture of the food mostly of rice wrappings. The only positive I would say is the price. I think many people come back because the price is very reasonable but I would never compromise price for service!! Or lack of...

Pros: nothing, maybe price

Cons: Everything, Service

May be the service is not that good. But their food is not that bad.You shouldn't order something that you don't know. You have to make sure it's not a vegetrian restaurant. It's ur fault not their fault. You have to blame on urself but not them. But they should improve in the way to treat the customer.

The service is terrible. The waiters and employees are not courteous, nice, friendly, or professional at all. The food is decent but quickly becomes worse just from how awful the service is. Clearly, customer service training is needed for all employees working there. Please do not visit, then perhaps they may start treating customers with some respect to earn business back. There is no excuse for such crummy service!

Great Chinese Food! I recommend the Ginger Chicken and the Baked Squid with Spicy Salt (that's what it's called) but it's fried and it's just seasoned with salt and peppers. To die for!!! Some of the best chinese food i've had. The service isn't great but that's not what i'm there for. And if you're polite you shouldn't have an problems.
And just so everybody knows - especially vegetarians (this means you ChineseFoodConnoissuer) - imitation crab is made out of fish!

Worst chinese restaurant in the world period. The service was horrible, the waiters are rude to the point you want to rip there heads off, Most do not speak or understand english, which made it quite dificult to order anything. The place is a mess and really dirty. The food tastes like cardboard boxes and even in some dishes, it tasted like metal and those carts with food were dispensing propane gases right into my nostril. The menu doesnt describe the item carefully either, I orederd the imitation crab meat dumpling and went to eat one when I tasted shrimp, I'm a vegetarian. Worst, worst, worst and even worst restaurant ever, If I could give zero stars I would.

We've tried many dim sum restaurants in this area, and Ocean Star on recommendation. We were seated promptly, but in 40 minutes at the restaurant were able to order only 3-4 dishes. This is because we were not seated on an aisle, and every cart seemed to turn the wrong direction. I felt like standing on my chair and yelling for service. I didn't. We were so hungry that we finally hailed over a taro cake cart and seemingly feasted. We soon regretted that because it was so greasy. 20 minutes later we were lucky and got our favorite-- shrimp noodle, which was OK. We had only ONE dumpling cart pass in those 40 minutes despite about a dozen passing along the aisles, and the supposed vegetable dumpings had a very gamey-tasting sausage; we returned that one and ordered a vegetable dumping from a waiter. That waiter then avoided our table (like the carts did), and we abandoned all hope. Submitting to the dumpling gods' disfavor, our fourth dish was a cold sesame bun with red bean paste, which was filled with a pocket of oil. 6 hours later, the taro cake is still turning in my stomach.

Pros: Only small wait on the weekend

Cons: service depends on whether you sit on the aisle/corner; not enough dumping carts; food too oily

I went to the Ocean Star with a big group of people and were seated in this stage-like area that had 2 steps to get up to. As a result non of the dim sum carts could go up the stairs. None of the servers bothered to check on us and ask if we wanted any of the food, they just kept walking by. We literally had to get out of our seats when we would see a cart and go up to it to see what they had and if we wanted any. Making it worse, someone left out group and someone else came late and sat down to join us. He asked for a plate, chop sticks and water literally 8 times before anyone brought it. I honestly don't think the waiter understood what we were asking for. When we did finally get some food, none of it was anything that I was say stood out as being good. It was okay, certainly not bad, but definitely nothing that I would say was particularly good. I love Dim Sum but I will never go back to this place. Go to the Empress in Chinatown instead, the food and the service are both infinitely better.

If you're in LA, make some time to drive to Monterey Park to try this place. Pace yourself when ordering. Don't jump in and order everything you see right away, because they have so many variety of dim sum, you'll be full and saying to yourself I should have try that instead of two orders of Har Gao! Har Gao (steamed shrimp dumpling) by the way, is done the way it should be. Perfect skin, fresh filling!

Ocean Star is a safe bet when you want some decent dim sum. I love that there is never a long wait for seats or food. The dim sum is not the best i have ever had but its good enough to being out of town friends.

Ocean Star is a huge restaurant and offers a wide variety of dim sum items. The traditional dim sum items, har gow, shui mai, bao, are all good but while you're there (and if you're willing to be a bit adventurous), try some of the more authentic items like the chicken feet. Those are sooo good! Also, as far as the service, I agree the service could be better, but hey it's Dim Sum! It's the fastest "fast food" there is (you could still be standing, just about to sit down, and the food is already on your table!) and if sometimes they are a bit rude than so be it. I love the ambience of the place, the loudness of it. Dim Sum just would not be the same without the loud chattering from neighboring tables, the clattering of dishes, and the Dim Sum ladies calling out their goodie carts! It's all good. Just get there early especially on the weekends. After 11am, there generally is a wait and parking can be packed. Enjoy!

I've been going to this restaurant for years, mostly because my parents always seem to go there for family birthdays. The food is decent and definitely more authentic than Americanized fusion places like P.F. Chang's, but the wait service is just lacking. They're very sloppy looking (some of the male waiters even had long pinky nails...what purpose that serves, I don't know), they barely acknowledge you, and when placing food on the lazy susans, they often look as if it were their first time waiting! The restaurant has improved its service a little bit over the years...probably due to seeing it's Americanized fusion competitors and wondering why more Asians, especially the younger generation, have been flocking to those spots despite the difference in authenticity. A Chinese restaurant does not have to be synonymous with C health ratings, rude service, and poor ambience. Oceanstar, however, is slow in catching on this idea and has yet to hire wait staff that speak some English to cater to the younger generation and anyone else who doesn't speak Chinese. Dirty dishes are left out in plastic basins as you enter further in the restaurant. The fish tanks look terribly dirty, and forget about smooth service. For a large restaurant that's not what you could call a cheap eat, they need to train their staff on how to do simple things like placing food on the table, changing out plates between courses, distinguishing what food should be brought in what order, how to have a professional appearance, and how to act like they're actually there to work and wait on customers. This place is just above average despite the good food because the rest of the experience is just poor.

This used to be a great dim sum restaurant. It's not bad now, but it's definitely not what it used to be. Service is still good, compared to other similar establishments (the servers actually greet you and explain what they're serving, although some of them don't speak a lick of English), and the food, though decent, lacks variety. I see a lot more choices in other dim sum joints.

Clams in black bean sauce are a must.

Good Dim Sum at this local Asian spot. Service is poor...but this is typical of an Asian locale. The food is pretty authentic. Warning if you're not Asian...they will bombard you with choices...as in, all the carts will be by your table and the ladies offering up their dishes. It is OK to say no thank you...unless you're feeling very adventurous! The standard dim sum fare is offered...har gow, siu mai, chicken feet, pork ribs, shrimp in a blanket and turnip cake, etc.

I would have to Ocean Star is your typical Dim Sum place in the San Gabriel Valley. The lines are long during brunch hours on the weekends. The dishes are just ok. Nothing to write home about. The best dish is the nan wan bao (Yellow Egg Custard Bao).

This chinese restaurant serves dim sum and dinner. Dim sum portions can be small, but it surely tastes amazing. This places stands above others which I ate at in Monterey Park. Dinner's cooking doesn't change either. Every plate tastes great. Try the bitter mellon soup, it's awesome!

I used to like Ocean Star -- their food is decent though a bit over-priced compared to other places around the area. If I'm in the area, I'd rather go to Village Seafood around the corner (which has great crab by the way).

I am Asian and when I usually go with my parents we get seated rather quickly. However, once I went with a group of mostly non-Asian friends and waited over an hour to get seated. There were about 10 of us there; we had told the waitress that we could be seated at 2 separate tables. At least 4 tables of our size were seated before us -- all arrived after us. When I asked the hostess about this, she yelled at me and told me that it was NOT first-come-first serve.

I had seen other people slip her money, which is not something I usually do, because I tip very well (esp. when I'm out with my friends, who tip at least 20%) -- enough for the hostess to get a chunk. I also do not think that that practice is fair -- it should be first-come-first-serve, esp. with a lobby filled with hungry people.

I finally found one of the managers -- told him about the situation, and he did NOTHING. Looked at me like -- I guess you're not getting seated then. At this point, my friends were become antsy -- probably b/c they were really, really hungry. I then found another manager -- probably the general one overseeing everything. He went to talk to the hostess and told her to seat us at the next available table. But no apology or anything.

After we were done eating (over $200 worth), I paid for both tables. Usually, when you have a large party seated together, there is 18% gratuity, but we did not get seated together. I tipped significantly less than what I usually would, but was not allowed to leave and forced to paid 18% gratuity. I really did not want to argue -- just wanted to leave, so I paid it.

This was the MOST TERRIBLE dining experience that I've ever had anywhere. I (and my friends) will NEVER EVER go there again.

just like the other dim-sum places in the monterey park area, Ocean Star is a happening place on the weekends for dim-sum. With similar prices and tastes, it all depends on how quick you are with getting a table. I have had some hits and misses at this place. As usual, it helps to have a small party, and come early. The hostess endures a lot of pain, getting everyone seated in a timely manner.

Yes, this is the place where Chinese people go for REAL CHINESE. Just keep in mind that when you show up at a restaurant that serves the Chinese, be prepared to SPEAK very slowly as the servers may not understand you.

Many wedding banquets were held here, including a couple that I attended many years ago (?) God I'm only 33. Anyway, a friend of mine had flew in from Singapore and decided this was the place to go since either of us haven't been here in years. We ordered a boat load of food for two, but could tackle for four. As soon as the food arrives, it is so good that it took me back in time. Every dish was FRESH in taste. The steam Perch is always a must whenever I go to this type of restaurant and it was done perfectly, not to mention, the Pepper-Garlic Sauteed pan fried Boston Lobster was the show stealer. This is one of many authentic seafood establishments in the area, the name has been around for a long time and certainly one of the best.

This dim sum place gets really crowded on the weekends and the wait is over an hour if you get there after 12. They have the dim sum in carts and they've got a lot of variety but you have to wait for the carts and you feel pressure to eat fast and leave.
The dim sum is all the standard stuff though, nothing too different or interesting.

What Empress Pavilion lacks in dim sum variety, Ocean Star easily makes up for it. And the prices are very reasonable!

We kind of consider ourselves American dim sum connosieurs, having sampled it wherever (and whenever) we can. Therefore, even though our old favorite place downtown satisfied us, we thought we had to try some places in Monterey Park. Well, if this restaurant is any indication, we have hit the jackpot!

Seriously, Ocean Star delivered on all fronts. All of the selection and freshness we expect was there, served by mostly friendly women. But the best thing was the food - just unbelievably excellent, in our opinion. Every item we tried tasted better than it has ever tasted before. Every single piece exuded tons of flavor. Nothing, absolutely nothing, disappointed. And the prices were extremely reasonable. We will be back, but if others think this is just OK, we can't wait to try some others!

This is the granddaddy of Los Angeles dim sum places. It is gigantic, but on weekends you still need to arrive early if you want to get a table without too long of a wait. They have a pretty nice variety of dishes on offer. They also seem to come up with new dishes periodically, we have had things there that we have never seen anywhere else.

With the increasing population of Chinese in the San Gabriel Valley, the gourmet standard of Chinese cuisine has been raised. Ocean Star, at one point in time, was very good, but its quality has gradually deteriorated. Don't get me wrong. It still serves decent authentic Cantonese cuisine and the prices are reasonable, but can hardly rival its better competitions in the area, let alone Hong Kong's.

I love the dim sum and chrysanthemum tea. Gets crowded during weekend brunch. Flower tofu dessert is great. Also been to two wedding banquets that were held here. Good eats.

My favorite and best dim sum in Southern California. They have the widest variety and best quality. Get there early or be prepared to wait in line.

To celebrate the new year, I decided to try a new restaurant and haul my family with me. Traditionally we've always headed to Chinatown, but this year we spread our wings. We arrived early (9:30am) and were seated immediately. The dim sum carts were already rolling around the room and we were quickly offered item after item. Most carts served at least 3 or 4 items--unlike other places we frequent where they each are dedicated to one, maybe two items. Because we were so early, many of the lunch time items (roast duck, roast chicken) weren't available until we were ready to leave. The large dining area was expectedly loud and busy. The cart servers were patient and explained dishes to those who needed it. Overall, it was a good enjoyable way to start a Sunday.

Pros: good dim sum menu, good service, reasonably priced

Cons: crowded parking lot

The dim sum and other culinary favorites that are featured at Ocean Star Restaurant are all delicious. But DO NOT go to Ocean Star and expect a beautiful ambience and quiet atmosphere. It's loud and the service isn't the best. Go there expecting great food at great prices.

Ocean Star is a reliable Chinese food standby within the Asian community -- it's sort of a large-scale Denny's for Asians. There are dozens, probably hundreds, of dim sum restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley, but few have the wide selection as Ocean Star.

Like most dim sum joints, the noise level is high, the service prompt but impersonal, and the wait will probably be at least an hour if you arrive after 11 a.m. on weekends. But, it's worth it if you want to sample more types of dim sum other than the standard har gao, shu mai, and cha su bao.

Best DIM SUM in Southern California! The Food is also wonderful, but I normally go for the weekend dim sum. The only thing is that the wait can be about 1 hour (but that's very typical of any restaurant nowadays). I've also been here for a wedding and the food was awesome. The service is fast, but the staff are a bit rude. But again, definitely worth the visit!

Pros: Average Prices, Big Facility

Cons: Crowded always

The dim sum at Ocean Star rivals that of dim sum dishes served in San Francisco's Chinatown. Because don't live close, I don't make it out to Monterey Park very often, but when I do it is a trip well worth the price!

Saw this rating on Citysearch...suggested it as place to meet former boss while he was in town, since his favorites are Chinese food and seafood...what a disappointment!! Huge restaurant, only 5 tables at the MOST occupied the whole time I was there...virtually little to NO seafood available...huge menu...food mediocre at best. I will say you get a lot of food for your money...

I think Ocean Star is one of the best places for authentic Chinese food. You can't go wrong with their specials, although I've only seen that menu written in Chinese. DimSum is excellent also. I recommend any seafood dish.

Compared with other dim sum palaces (in Chinatown and the San Gabriel Valley), Ocean Star has more variety, and offers many dishes that are unfamiliar to the non-Chinese palate. You will see much more than the usual har gow, shui mai and pork buns. On a recent dim sum binge that included Empress Harbor, NBC, Empress Pavilion and Ocean Star, my boyfriend and I decided we liked Ocean Star the best. If you get there early, there's not a wait and the waitresses will carefully explain each dish to you.
