Ratings_icons City Boxing is a TERRIBLE GYM

Christina J.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE

City Boxing is a terrible gym for people looking to just get in shape. Trainers only concerns are people looking to pursue professionally. All other members are left by the wayside with little training.

Dealing with any membership inquiries are a PAIN!!! City Boxing claims they have nothing to do with the memberships when you want to freeze or end your memberships. The third party ASF Intl will make you jump over hoops just to end your membership and add costs to finalize.

City Boxing even 'updated' my account with a credit card that I did not authorize them to use when I froze my payment to the gym. SHADY SHADY BUSINESS.

This probably explains why they're best pro MMA fighter (Brandon Vera) left the gym and it's manager

Ratings_icons City Boxing is SHADY business

So I went to City Boxing off 14th St and met one of the managers Mike who gave me a price around 1699, then lowered it to 1299, I went in the next day and talked to a nicer guy named Josue, he started at 1199, then 1000. It all seemed shady to me.
I joined, but when I got home I felt like I was hussled, so I decided to get my money back the next day. I had bought some gear and decided to return it first, they put my money back on the card right away, but when I went in to get my initial payment of $260, they said 'oh it takes 30 days'. Yeah right!!! Im still waiting on my money. Im glad I left because MIKE ended up being the MOST ARROGANT person I have ever ran into in my life, he completely turned when I said I wasn't joining.

Ratings_icons Wow!! Great Gym, Great Employees!

Debbie S.

I am almost in disbelief of all the terrible comments this amazing place is getting. These are probably the only 10 people unhappy at City Boxing.

I met one of the sales guys on the street(Travis), he was out marketing and invited me in. When I went into the club, Travis came up and greeted me and offered me a tour and an explanation of the PB gym. Then we sat down and went over the very reasonable pricing that City Boxing offeres and made sure the schedule would fit my needs. Who wouldn't want to learn how to protect themselves and get in shape for less than the cost of a Starbucks coffee a day...One year contract, big deal, I dont want to be in shape for only one year anyways. This is my new life style. I recomend this to anyone and everyone. Travis told me he is new in the City Boxing atmosphere and trying to bring a new flavor. Hope to see you there!

Ratings_icons Terrible

The gym was ok, but it was small and stunk and there was no limit on the number of people they let into the class... both of us were not enamored with the place and we figured since my friend had only paid for a month, we would go someplace else...

Trainers come and go yet City Boxing continues to adverstised their "over qualified instructors"--blue and white belts I guess are now considered elites. At times they have had great staff but it appears they are also suckered into contractual obligations with dishonest management. I have seen 3 quality brown and blackbelt trainers dissapear from this club at their own will, leaving the cheap, unprofessional managers with no other options. In no way will they amend the lengthy, costly contract students are signed to to adjust due to unsatisfactory services, or even injury or financial constraints. In fact they claim no responsibility to the agreement, having outsourced membershit terms to an outside merchant: ASF--who also claim they have no authority to revise or freeze membershits. I extremely advise to stay away from this gym, it is nothing like other martial arts or sports affiliated clubs I have ever been associated with. No brotherhood, no sympathy to athletes..just run like a selfish, coldhearted corporate entity. They will screw you over.

Ratings_icons Terrible staff who will rip you off

Anonymous

They are only friendly when they want you to pay and then as soon as you join they are very rude. Not worth the price and terrible customer service. The morning trainer on 14th is nice but the place does not smell that good and it is VERY small. This is not for any female that wants to get in shape, unless you want to compete professionally. Price is too high and there are much better gyms out there if you really want to pay the price. Mike the sales guy will rip you off and any "special" he offers is really no special at all. Would never suggest this gym to anyone. Huge mistake.

Ratings_icons Terrible Contract Services

Anonymous

I will be short and sweet. The gym is nice, and the trainers are well educated and willing to help. The contract services, and the sales people who sign you up are terrible. I had to temporarily relocate to LA for 6 months, and was told I could not freeze my account. Any company that continues to charge you for services that you can not render, is not a company you want to deal with. Needless to say, my contract will be up in July, I will not re-enroll and will sign up with Undefeated Gym. My brother signed up there and the contract is month to month, cancel when you want.

Ratings_icons HORRIBLE EXPERIENCES AND BAD EMPLOYEES (MARK/MIKE)

Don A.

First off, this is NOT the gym you want to join! They are complete fakes and will lie to you and their main goal is just to try to sign you up to a long-term contract (year) and you're a sucker for signing the dotted lines. I was promised verbally by their employee/manager at that time, Donovan and he said if I was either deployed or got injured during training, that they would put my membership on hold and resume once I got back or when I recovered. Then Mike, who is totally rude and is a PUNK, did not offer to extend my membership due to me missing 5 months of training. No compensation whatsoever. He said his job is to SIGN PEOPLE UP. That punk pissed me off and if my elbow wasn't bad, I probably would have punched his punk in the face.

This gym is a RIP-OFF

Ratings_icons Don't waste your money!!!!

Anonymous

The people who are members of this gym must have never looked at any other gym. I have been a member for a couple months (after being a member at some other local gyms) and joined because they sold me on the great training I would receive from their great trainers. I don't have anything bad to say at all about the trainers. When they are actually training you (you better be in a class or personal training or they won't give you a second of their time) they have some good info to pass on. Read these other reviews.... they all hit it on the head. The customer service is crap. The employees would rather fight you than train you. Maybe things are better at the PB gym but STAY AWAY from the downtown gym. Either way I recommend spending your money elsewhere. In the couple of months I have been a member, I have yet to speak to anyone who is happy with this gym!!!

Ratings_icons How to get Scrooged. These clowns get star demerits

See Rudy B. Silva,G.M. of City Boxing.Sign a contract and you're on your way.Since April I've been trying to get out of the clutches of City Boxing and ASF Int.,their money people, but no love there. Both of these organizations choose to ignore the clause re:Cancellation and the Better Business Bureau in two states.I am a 63yr.old male receiving a disability(permanent)check, and have recently gone through radiation therapy for prostate cancer.Although I've fulfilled my obligations, they do not.At this time they have a collection agency after me to collect money for services NOT rendered.Needless to say,but I will,my credit rating has tanked.I have forewarned City Boxing of negative publicity, again they ignore.Look for me to demonstrate next week in front of City Boxing.Date?12/18-when-ever

Ratings_icons Kinda long but please read.

A couple really great fighters train there, hell one may be the next UFC heavy weight champ. When I walked in, I must agree with the others who have commented, I didn't feel the best welcomed, but then again this was a boxing gym not a damn sewing class. I asked for the guy that had been emailing me. He was brief in his introduction about the place, but I expected that. Then I worked out and had what I'd say the best work-out in a year. After when I was leaving the facility this young man called me back from the street. I then went to the counter where I spoke to a young lady she informed me of the prices. No one does anything for free and I am very much aware that money has to be made, this is a buisness. I believe if you offer a good service you should get a good appropriate fee. Now I'm not the kinda guy who would sign a year contract without giving it at least a few hours thought, but this was what they wanted right there and then. They changed the enrollment fee three times and dropped the monthly payment as well. It was a good deal, but this guy was downright rude and offensive. I was already sold on the place, but when I told him I had to check my finances, this guy ragged on me for that. What a complete tool! I left immediately and didn't look back.

PROS: Great trainers
CONS: High pressure salesman who make a worthwhile gym seem like a con.

Ratings_icons A gym for driven people who don't need the interaction!

Sarah H. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 625

City Boxing is a great small gym that is located on 14th street. Its your typical smaller gym, but it is well kept, clean, and has a certain workout feel to it. They are your typical boxing gym, and there is nothing super special or out of the ordinary about this facility. It has a big chain feeling to it, even though it is such a small little gym. Its sort of cold, and unwelcoming, and sweaty smelling, but then again, I guess that is what a boxing gym is supposed to be. The employees are pretty keep to themselves, they do not really help you out, like they do in many other gyms, and they really just sort of supervise the place in case anything goes wrong. Its not a warm, welcoming atmosphere with friendly employees like you would like a gym to have, but instead its stern, cold, and rather unwelcoming. I would not really choose to go to this particular boxing gym, because I want to feel like my business is appreciated. When you can walk through the door of a small gym and not even be greeted with a hello when someone is looking right at the door, then there is something wrong in my opinion. If you are totally into your workout, dont want to be hassled with people or instructors, and just want to work out, then City Boxing is the place to go. If you are a normal workout enthusiast, and need a little instructor interaction, or someone to help kick start you and keep you going, then I would pass this place by. They offer discounts, trial offers, and other specials from time to time. If you are considering them, look for a discount before you go, call ahead and make sure it is currently a valid discount, and try not to pay full price for any of their services, because they are ridiculously over priced!

PROS: Up to date equipment, driven facility
CONS: Feels like a chain gym, impersonal employees, cold, and uninviting

Ratings_icons Nice looking but bad attitudes.

Ashley J.

I went into city boxings new gym in Pacific Beach recently after seeing an ad they posted on their web site for 30 days free. The manager told me they were not doing the free trial yet. I asked him why not and when it would begin and he said 3 or 4 weeks. It was on their site already so I asked why, he repeated they were not doing it yet and he got mad! I was already skeptical after hearing rumors (that I had ignored) about this gym, at that point, I felt they were all probably true. There was a corporate feel and attitude that was just not what I am looking for in a small gym. There is another boxing gym here in PB I am going to check out...wish me luck ;-]

PROS: nice looking gym
CONS: bad attitudes, false advertising and corporate feel
