Nozomi makes the best sushi ever. Their recently opened restaurant, Nozomi 2 is just the same, except it is newer and a bit cleaner. The service is also very good. Not only were the staff friendly, but the food arrived in less than 20 mins. From my experience, if it takes more than 20 mins, kids will start to get impatient and make it hard to do things.
PROS: 2 convenient locations

When you walk into Nozomi's you are boisterously greeted by the hostess, chefs and waitresses. The attention you receive by staff is great from start to finish. The dishes are huge in proportions and delicious. I personally like the rainbow roll and chicken yakisoba. The sushi is ALWAYS fresh, I've yet to visit Nozomi's on a "bad" day. Nozomi's can get really busy, but I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes if at all.
PROS: Fresh food, large proportions, great staff, economically affordable.
CONS: none

Sushi rolls are different here and it's a korean-style japanese food restaurant. The place is kind of claustrophobic for me, but the food is alright. The curry was decent, and so were the rolls. Shrimp tempura roll was the best. The price is average for a Japanese restaurant.

I would say this place has the best japanese food in San Diego; unlike pricier places that are all flash and superficial, Nozomi has a very welcoming, nonpretentious atmosphere and serves lots of fantastic rolls and hearty dishes. The chicken curry is so large that it can be shared between two people; the rolls take a long time to prepare but are well worth the wait. They have photos of specialty rolls plastered all over the walls so you know what you are ordering! The super crunchy roll is a must-have. Entrees range from $6-$10 like curries, noodles, salads, etc.
PROS: REALLY good Japanese food
CONS: Closed on Sundays
