If you love juicy pork and crab dumpling, you will love this restaurant, the only restaurant I know of that specializes in this type of steamed dumpling. The other steamed dumplings are fine, but not what this restaurant is known for.

The chicken soup is another specialty that you can't get elsewhere. A very rich, chicken intense broth, that would take hours to do at home. Also noteworthy is the Shanghai Rice Cake. Yummy and chewy!

Arrive 15-30 minutes (or more for weekends) before the restaurant opens for immediate seating.

we went here for a going away lunch for some people at work. they have terrific pork dumplings and vegetables. it does get a little busy, but its worth a little wait. the service is very fast and efficient. i didnt really like the red bean dumplings but apparently some people think those are really good too. this is definitely a place you should try at least once.

There's only one thing that stands out about this restaurant -- the dumpling wraps/skins are made well. What does that mean? Well, one of the most enjoyable things about eating this type of dumpling (xiao long bao) is the flavorful soup that comes out of the meat when the dumplings are steamed. And in that respect, Din Tai Fung earns 2 stars for making dumpling skins that rarely break. However, aside from this one highlight, I've never understood why people rave over this restaurant. It's over-priced, always crowded, and the food isn't all that tasty.

Now you may be thinking, "if a restaurant is crowded, the food MUST be good." To that I say, "this restaurant is always crowded because 1) people don't know any better/have nothing else to compare it to, and 2) its frequent patrons are pretentious folks who like to drop names in their conversations (you know the kind of people I'm referring to...)."

For comparable (maybe even tastier) food without having to fork out a good chunk of your paycheck, try this alternatives (they're both in the same little plaza in San Gabriel): Jin Jiang Restaurant, and Mei Long Village.

As someone who's eaten xiao long bao in Shanghai, I'd say I have a fairly good basis for judgement. And believe me, I'm really not being harsh on this restaurant, nor do I have any personal grudge against its owners, employees, etc. It's really just not all that.

PROS: dumpling skins
CONS: over-priced, busy, parking, everything else besides the dumpling skins

Most people rave about this place, but I think it's so-so. The lines are long -- you almost never get seated immediately. The portions are really small -- you have to spend a fortune to get full on dumpling here.

The food is good though, just be careful you don't burn yourself with the juice.

Try Luscious Dumpling instead -- cheaper and much better.

PROS: Long lines, small portions
CONS:

i believe this restraunt is overrated. its cool how you can see the poeple making the dumplings right before you but they are way too oily, and the servings are so small. The price there is insanely high.

PROS: good for social get togethers
CONS: steep price, too much oil

BUT I THINK OTHERWISE.
EVERYTIME I GO TO EAT HERE, I ALWAYS GET TUMMY ACHES. SOMETHING IN MY FOOD UPSETS MY TUMMY. IF YOU HAVE A WEAK TUMMY, MAYBE YOU SHOULD AVOID COMING HERE too. the food tastes good, but it doesnt make me feel good inside. LAWEEKLY RECOMMENDS EATING HERE. CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED. EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

What a dissappointment! The dumplings were dry and had little flavor. WHERE"S THE SOUP???!
The ones that I ordered (pork) didn't have any soup inside. They tasted like a chopped up, undercooked, dry, FIELD! (Almost like chopped up alfalfa or something.)
They were not at all what I expected...and overly priced at that.
I love authentic Chinese food and even studied dim sum cooking in Hong Kong.
These dumplings were NOTat all what I would even put in a remote ballpark to being able to be called "good"!

PROS: overpriced
CONS: dry flavorless dumplings

din tai fung is a famous chain throughout asia and has come to arcadia since there are so many taiwanese immigrants. the lines are incredibly long for dinner, especially on the weekends, so get there early to put your name in. you can walk around to the bakery in the complex while you wait. the most popular type of dumplings are the juicy pork ones, with broth that squirts into your mouth when you bite into it. they also have veggie dumplings and noodle soups, etc. these are authentic dumplings, so don't expect those fake americanized potstickers that you buy frozen.

PROS: tasty
CONS: long wait

I have only been here once, but it was pretty good. I am not a fan of seafood so for dumplings my only option was pork. However, they were very good. They also have a great assortment of side dishes that you can get. It's a little odd to stand outside and order before being seated but it is nice to get your food moments after sitting down. Because it's so polpular it's very crowded and they will rush you out of there once you are done eating so don't go if you want a leisurely dinner. If all you want are really good dumplings for a good price, then this is the place for you.

This is the most authentic dumplings you can taste, their dumplings is even better than the Ding Tai Fung Dumpling House in Hong Kong. The best part is the skin is so thin and delicate, makes the dumpling taste so juicy. However, you need to go there early to get a seat, line is always long there. But I think it's worth it for the great taste of the dumplings! I am so addicted to it. I feel so lucky that I don't need to take a plane to Asia in order to eat these declious dumplings!

Food is great. They serve dumplings and noodles. but they are very small portions and it could get expensive if you order a lot. Be prepared for a long wait. Service is not good. They hand you the check when you finish and will even "ask" you to leaveif you do not intend to go. It's good to go once in a while. My friend told me she once met Jet Li there!

Terrific authentic chinese dumplings. Lots of fun for a large group, with many dishes to pass around. The food comes quickly once you are seated so any waiting to get a table is forgotten. The food is incredibly low cost, but not low quality.

This is a Taiwanese style dumpling house (a sister restaurant to the world famous original in Taipei) - thus, their best dumplings (the "juicy pork" ones) are thin-skinned, small, and filled with hot flavorful soup along with the pork. You gotta know how to eatthem properly to enjoy them (bite a small hole in the skin from the top, blow in them until cool enough, then eat whole - the soup inside is the best part). The dumplings that don't have soup in them are ok. Try the red bean dumplings for dessert. For larger, thicker and sweeter-skinned dumplings with soup inside, check out Mei Long Village in Monterey Park. Another thing to note, this place closes at 2pm, then reopens at 5pm and goes to 9pm for dinner. Get here early cause there is always a wait.

This world renowned Taiwanese dumpling house is known for their handmade juicy dumplings. With restaurants in Taiwan and Japan, Din Tai Fong is has some of the best pork dumplings (shiao long bao) that simply melt in your mouth. For dessert, try the red bean dumpling to satisfy the sweet palette. The wait can be long during dinner time so make sure to come early!

I know this place is a cult destination and always has VERY LONG lines, and I agree that their dumplings are finely made, etc. etc. BUT the waitresses funnel you in brusquely, make you order immediately and then try to shuffle you out before you're done so they can do more seatings. It's overcrowded, overpriced and overpraised. It's all engineered as a money-making machine. Try San Gabriel's Luscious Dumplings (off Las Tunas) instead. Better and no attitude

One of the wonders of living in LA is to go to some truly unusual restaurants that serve foods that you will not get anywhere else. Now dumplings are not that rare, but a restaurant that specializes in dumplings, and dumplings that are this good, is incredibly rare. They are veggie friendly but their juicy pork dumplings are absolutely the best.

Their fish dumpling is the best. You may also want to try the chick soup noodles.

Only problem is, it's always crowded, and they don't take reservations. Be prepared for 20- to 30-minute waits.

If you've never had Taiwanese dumplings, you must try these. The wait is always long, but well worth it. Food is served just a few minutes after being seated. The pork and crab dumplings are the best!!! The dessert red bean dumplings are unbelievable. Order plenty, cause you'll eat more than you think once you try em!

One of the crown jewels of the San Gabriel Valley - best dumplings around. Ordering is very efficient, but expect to be pressured to leave after about an hour. It is not a romantic spot, as it is full of hustle and bustle, but the quality of the dumplings makes up for the lack of ambiance. There are vegetarian options.

PROS: Incredible dumplings, efficient service
CONS: Loud PA system near the door, they will seriously pressure you if you dawdle.

This place is OK, not the greatest in the world. The dough is actually too thin and the dumplings dry too quickly. It lacks a certain sweetness to the dough (I'm an experienced dumpling eater). The veggie dumplings are pretty decent tho.
