been going here for a little now and everything seemed fine. took my teacup yorkie to dr. sam because i noticed a slight limp in her hind leg. he said, without even taking x-rays that she needed an operation. i told him no and he said fine, bring her in tomorrow and we will take x-rays. he still confirmed that she needed a surgery in her hind leg. he started the surgery and she died, he said to "cardiac arrest" and that he told me she had a bad hear, which i was never told.

i never got to say goodbye to EMY, this monster is a dog killer. he is trying to protect himself. do not go to this animal killer

One day my dog suddenly stopped eating and I noticed blood in his mouth. I took him to Colima Animal Hospital as quickly as I could. I've been with this hospital for a long time, and they never gave me any problems. So I assumed this time

I am a cat breeder and dog owner in Laguna Beach .I drive all the way ( an hour in each Direction) To go to Dr Sam .He is the best surgeon I know. He is the only one I let do C-sections on my cats. He has the kittens out and the mom standing in the carrier with in a half an hour, My babys are nursing on the way home. His prices are fair.
He does not run up the bill with alot of unnecessary testing or meds. He is kind, always with a smile and calm disposition for everyone. no appointment needed , just show up and sign in. If you need a c-section, call ahead and they will have everything ready and waiting. The staff are very nice and do there very best to serve you well. The girls really try hard. Sometimes its very busy and hectic and still the staff treats you nicely.
I had an abcess on my cats neck and cheek, the local very wanted $780.00 $$$$ to do the surgery, but I went to Dr Sam and walked out with a bill of $178.00, what a diff... I have seen this over and over, been going there for at least 10 years. I have been breeding since 1984.At this point , I feel like I know as much as some of the vets I have met.. I would say, he is really woth the drive, Wendi Steinman, Laguna beach

Awful place. The front desk people are VERY rude and ignores you. Parking is very limited. The only reason to give it two stars would be the surgeon is somewhat professional, but he does try to run up the bills by adding expensive procedures and prescriptions for some minor issues

All those 5 stars are probably those front desk people who keeps you ignored while sitting at the computers.

This place is the worst. It is dirty, smelly, and very unprofessional. The front desk people are rude and unprofessional. They always want to give unnecessary services. My friend's dog died, and they didn't even bother to let her know until she called.

I take all of my cats and 1 dog here. They definitely need a larger facility because they are very busy at times. Dr. Sam is professional, matter of fact and isn't close minded to nutrition being the critical factor when it comes to healing and he doesn't push his vet diets on you like most of them do. He did surgery on my cat after my cat was bitten by something large and his leg swelled up and became infected. He did a great job on it, no problems or secondary issues. It healed well and my kitty is doing great now! So now I can add that he is not only a great vet but an excellent surgeon to my list of likes for Dr. Sam and his team.

One of the worst places you can take you loved animal. Who cares if Dr. Sam is nice? I prefer quality over quantity and this place is like an assemby line. Run em' in,and run em'out. The girls that work the front reception are the meanest, nastiest excuse for a friendly person. Drive 1 extra mile and go somewhere else.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE! My 11 week old kitten who was in perfect health before her spay DIED due to the staff's after care. She could have been saved if they had noticed earlier or at all. She clearly had signs of a very BAD reaction to the anatizya while in their care (diarrhea and failure to come around after 3 hours). She was rushed to the emergency vet(after she did not wake up after 8 hours) and had a painful 2 day experience, where she went blind and had brain damage due to the lack of oxygen, and also was bleeding internally due to Colima Animal Hospital??s the botched surgery. This was an accident waiting to happen. The staff there is more concerned about helping out their own human friends by giving them medicine for personal use, then helping animals. I have taken a lot of animals here and every time I regret it because they come home with infections and the staff is never nice. they have concersations in the back room while you wait for hours to pick up your animal. if you love your pets DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE! its not worth the pain of losing them...

I have read both the good and bad reviews here. While there are a very 'few' that have some small percentage of merit, I honestly & truly have to agree with the positive reviews.

Dr. Sam treated my kitty over the past few years; performed several surgeries on his ear, trying his best to eliminate a chronic infection. Since I had become an unemployed statistic, he was wonderful by affording me his services at drastically reduced prices.

On March 1, I returned home after a weekend away to find my darling boy in very bad condition. It was late, but I raced him to Dr. Sam's office; only to find there was nothing to be done for him. Dr. Sam [& his staff] were absolutely wonderful to me at that most devastating time for me; allowing me to spend as much time as I needed before letting my baby go. I was completely heartbroken, and Dr. Sam afforded me unlimited consideration and compassion.

I just got a new baby girl and will not hesitate to take her back to Dr. Sam. Kathy Garrison

There is no place where you will find low cost services like this, and Dr. Sam is wonderful. I have never encountered anything but friendly staff.
So, they are busy and you have to wait a bit. It isn't the Ritz, but they provide a great service for a great price.

I wish I could give it 0 stars.

I've been taking my dogs here for YEARS and thought that this place was fine, just like any other animal hospital..but I was WRONG.

This place is NOT well-maintained: it ALWAYS smells like urine and something else unrecognizable. The staff is typically very busy running around trying to multi-task, so items easily get misplaced, brushed over, or labeled incorrectly (ex: they had printed the label of my dog's medicine under a different dog's file); the phone constantly rings off the hook so callers have to wait only to be spoken to rudely by a staff member running someone's credit card and filing a chart at the same time.

Just recently, I brought in my dog to do a simple check-up on his blood work which they requested after his recent surgery . The large woman at the front TOOK my little dog to the back. He was scared (of course, who wouldn't be?) and was trying to keep her from sticking him. She had to get 2 other girls to hold him down. I heard him resisting and trying to escape. They were only back there for a minute or two. Then she came back to speak with me at the front desk with my dog under her left arm, and his leash and harness, as well as the exposed syringe in her right. (Now seeing that was a red-flag to me. Isn't that..just.. you know, WRONG?!) She said they couldn't restrain him to get his blood because he kept squirming and putting his paws up but when they tried to hold him down, HE TURNED PURPLE!!!!!!!!!!! What the hell? Three full-grown women who work at an animal hospital couldn't figure out how to restrain a Pomeranian?!?! That blew my mind. As I was trying to make sense of what she was telling me, and attempting not to punch her in the face for STRANGLING my dog until he turned PURPLE, she quickly offered to sedate him so they could proceed. (oh HELL NO.) In the most polite manner I could muster, I told her that I would wait to speak with my brother first about the situation (he's pre-Vet, but I didn't need to tell her) and took my dog back from her. She answered back telling me that my brother doesn't know anything about how to hold a dog (as if she does) and that they should just do it now. That upset me more, so then I just assured her that I would wait, reached for the leash and harness (she was still holding the exposed syringe in the same hand), turned around in disgust, and left.

I am NEVER going back there.

This place will kill your animal. I recently went to see Dr. Sam for my dog who was having hind leg problems. We took some x-ray and saw that my dog had a disc. Dr. Sam gave my dog a shot of dexamethasone and prescribed him Rimadyl and Prednisone. 9 days later my dog had to be put down. I was never warned of any side effects of these drugs and told that they were perfectly harmless. After my dog starting having blood in his stool and starting have seizures we took him to another vet and was told that Rimadyl should never be given with Pred or dexamethason, and that the dosing for the pred alone was very high by itself. Secondly after going on the website of the manufacturers of Rimadyl, it said that Rimadyl should not be given with dexamethasone or prednisone. The vet at the emergency hospital also said he never prescribes Rimadyl with dexamethason or prednisone. Please don't make the same mistake I did, it cost me my dog's life.

The dr. there never ever rips people off infact he works with rescue organizations... and helps them Cats in Need, all breed dog rescue.... good dog dog talk......anybody who loves and rescues pets the dr. gives a special price to them and gives them free stuff how is that in it for the money....... he is the least expensive vet in all of LA county. and not only that but the service is sooo good he really cares about the people on a one on one basis.....he has excellent bedside manners, hes an excellent surgeon, and dr...... i will never ever take my pets any where else..... do not trust any other hospital .

I have recently had the opportunity to adopt a beautiful aussie shep mix from the pound and was eager to find a good vet to go to. lets face it, almost every animal hospital in the area have Outrageous prices on every procedure that can possible be done, but no Colima. i walked away with a full set of vaccines, flea control, microchiped, and a very good dental deal for only less than $450! other places charge soo much, completely insane. $500 alone did NOT even cover most of the procedures Dr.Sams office offers. overall it was a good experience for me and my dog lilly.

I've been going to Dr. Sam for 3 years now and I have 3 cats. He is treating one who is now 20 years old. Dr. Sam does truly care for the animals which is awesome but you definitely have to keep him up on what's going on with your pet because he's extremely busy. He's busy because people love the way he cares for the animals, listens & because he accepts your choice for holistic approaches if he feels that is working for your pet as well as offers nutritional advice to prevent illness. No vet that I know of offers a quality prescription food for animals with crf & until they do, were all stuck in limbo. All of the foods the vets offer for things like CRF have "by products " in them unfortunately. However the demand for Dr. Sam is so high that he's seeing too many animals in one day, and cannot handle the business, he's doing his best with the two hands he has. This is exactly why you will see a few 1 stars and a lot of 4 & 5 stars. Most of the 1 stars are probably people who fell in the cracks on a day he was totally swamped and things didn't go so well for the few of you. My opinion is that he needs to relocate to a bigger office and hire more staff to handle his unwavering clientele. I hope he does because I really would like to continue to take my pets to him.

I'm a new cat breeder and where I live the prices for procedures are out of this world. The cat breeder that is mentoring me has been taking all of her cats and dogs to Dr. Sam (his nickname) for 20 years. Dr. Sam is known for being an excellent surgeon. He is a sweet kind man. He doesn't rip you off like some vets do!

I know that his office doesn't look as fancy and his front office staff is not the greatest but Dr. Sam makes up for it! I drive an 1 hour to take my pets to him for any surgical procedures. So far I have had a c-section on one of my pregnant cats and another one of my cats spayed.

The cat breeder that is mentoring me has had many more procedures - never with any complications. He performs his surgeries with precision usually with a very tiny 1 inch scar.

this is my 2nd baby blu pitbull going in to have his lil ears done, and i would have to say that after a few wks of recovery his ears look sooo GOOD! i was told before that the doctor especialized in EAR CROPPING and i highly recommened this doc. Not only that but everytime i went to recheck my baby they would clean his ears and told me how to maintain it. i dont know what other people say about his work, they probably dont know how to treat a baby pit the way he/she is suppose to be after having a procedure like this done. anyway, i am soo going back soon with my new baby!

This hospital looks pretty old and run down and the entire staff isn't very friendly, caring, or sympathetic. Sitting there in the waiting room was ridiculously long even if it was for a quick checkup. In my opinion the doctor seems very shady and is just looking to make a few hundred bucks even if my dog doesn't need certain procedures. I took my dog in for 2 surgeries and i was horribly overpriced. Although the surgeries went completely fine I never feel a sense of welcome or warmth when I enter that hospital, which to me is very important. The staff at Colima Animal Hospital should take a Veterinary Office Procedures and Hospitality class. I've seen busier vet hospitals yet the staff are very nice and caring. I don't recommend this place.

Update: It figures they would lose my dog's/my file when i went in for a neuter 2 weeks ago. Again, if you want a bad experience and a long wait, i recommend this place.

I have been a long time client with Colima Animal hospital, and have brought many patients in over the years. Dr. Sam and his staff have always been friendly, and caring for my pets, which are like my children. If i were a person searching for an animal hospital and i read these reviews i would be scared to death to bring my pets there!! BUT TO BE HONEST.. Dr. Sam is a true animal lover, that cares very much about his patients and his work. His staff is awesome they work as fast as they can multitasking between phones, walkins, treating animals, and cleaning the area. This clinic is a walkin hospital, that takes walkins six days a week so there tends to be a wait when coming in for a visit, but other hospitals require appointments. what more can someone ask for! most people who tend to have a problem with their visit have time to post degrading comments.but people who have no problems with a great experience, dont tend to run and praise about it on the reviews. I hope this honest comment will persuade people to not believe everything they read from these people.

p.s. to the person who did the cosmetic surgery on your dogs ear. I am personally against that procedure because it is unneccessary, it is mainly to make your dog look a certain way. you could have saved yourself the trouble, and tears if you only left her ears alone

We brought our baby pitbull in to have her ears cropped. Colima Pet hospital was recommended by our vet in Costa Mesa, CA, since not many places do ear cropping anymore. Everything seemed to be okay, she was just groggy from being sedated. This was done on Friday and early Sunday morning the stitch on her ear FELL OUT! mind you that she had an E-collar on at all times! We then had to rush her to the emergency room where she had to be put under again. (which at that point I started to cry cause I didnt like the way she looked and felt after Colima put her under) This cost us an additional $150.00 which I would pay no matter what circumstance if my puppy was hurt. I called Colima first thing Monday to tell them that my dogs stitch was not put on tight enough and they need to reimburse us for the emergency clinic. All they could say was "you shouldve waited another day to bring her to us" Which is when I told them about her ear bleeding and the cartlidge and open wound being exposed!!! They dont care at all about animals, very unprofessional and NOT Friendly. Especially store manager Gina, and another worker there named Trish! They had no sympathy for us. I really just have been so upset since this and feel like there is no one to help us or on our side. :( VERY SCARY and BAD HOSPITAL. The office did look old and dirty as well.

We took our sick kitten in on 10/29/2007 at 3 PM, the doctor said she had Panleukopenia, and suggested to leave the kitten there overnight for treatment. When I called the next morning at 10 AM, the doctor gave me the bad news, the kitten died at 8:30 PM and said I can come to collect the body.

When we arrived at 5:20 PM, we were told the kitten was already collected by the cremation service. We never consent to or aware of such an arrangement. The staff and doctor gave us excuses of why the cat was sent off, including the freezer is broken, they do not need owner consent to do so, and it's illegal to bury animal body in the backyard.

We then found out the next day(10/31/2007) that the body had already been cremated. We were never given a chance to see the body and now she is gone forever. In 5 hours, a kitten was able to stand on her own and walk about, died in their care.

All the while they didn't call me to provide the status of the kitten as they promised to, as if they were trying to avoid us. Please be aware of this animal hospital, we've learned our lessons.

We've filed a formal complaint against Dr. Sargiouis with the California Veterinary Medical Board (VMB). It's very easy and if you haven't done so, I am glad to show you how. You can also find information at vmb.ca.gov/comp-inf.htm

Honestly, I don't even know why Dr. Sam is still practicing veterinary medicine. Rumor has it his daughter is doing a lot of the surgeries lately and she's supposed to be better, but I don't trust the place.

My cat rescue recommended this vet when one of my adopted cats developed a hematoma. Houdini had surgery, and it cost under $100 (affordable!). When Hou went in to get the stitches removed, the vet refused to remove them and wanted us to wait an additional two weeks. Waiting permanently damaged Houdini's ear and it is now crinkled and disformed.

I rescued a cat, Sammy, that had been torn apart by a dog. He needed vet attention and we took him to a vet in West Covina who was amazing. I registered him with the rescue so he could be adopted out when he was all healed. He got dehydrated one day and I was told to take him to Dr. Sam. I did.

The next day, two kittens we were fostering got really sick and we were told to take them to Dr. Sam. He accused us of p0isoning our cats. (We use non toxic cleaners and don't even use ant p0ison in our home!) They wanted to do a fecal. A fecal takes 2 minutes to look at through a microscope. They told us it would be hours before they got the results. When they took the kittens to the back to keep them overnight, I got a peek at Sammy. He was alert, awake, and hooked up to an IV SHARING a table with a dog (he HATES dogs). I saw him and he looked so much better that I was sure he would make it.

10am the next day, I call the vet to check on my three babies. They're all dead. DEAD. We didn't leave the kittens' larger sister with them (thankfully) and it turned out their sickness was a severe allergy to CORN in their food. She's still alive, several years later.

Dr. Sam also accused me of p0isoning yet another foster kitten (who is best known for faking sick).

Our cat rescue has had kittens die from their routine spay and neuter surgeries as well.

Do your beloved cat and dog a favor. Go somewhere else.

Back in 2003 I brought my alaskan husky in to get spaded. About 9 month later, I realized that my husky was getting bigger and bigger. Next thing I knew she was pregnant. How can this be possible? I brought it in to get spaded. After having the puppies, I brought my dog back in to this so called "doctor" He actually had the courage to ask me if this was even the same dog!!!. I told him to pull out the medical records, and they ended up telling me it was missing. With the receipt in my hand, he eventually tells me, he'll redo the surgery at no cost. All I have to say is that they have the most incompetent workers and doctors. I have heard so many pets being treated poorly at this clinic. Beware of the big fat worker in the front desk (I think she was the one who destroyed my pets records. If you want a bad experience, pleasae go ahead and see him. I just hope someone with the right authority would take charge and close this killer hospital down.

The best animal hospital ever!

I took my dog sugar to Colima Animal Hospital she had gotten attacked by coyote. She was in shock and bleeding everywhere and I called they said bring her right in. The rushed me in in front of all their waiting clients and started working on her right away. The staff and the Dr. ( Dr. Sargious) were all so carring. I explained to them that I had no money and I didnt know what to do. The Dr. patted my back and said dont worry well work something out with you. They put her on I.V. took xrays and ran bloodwork. All within 25 min. The Dr. told me to go home and pray for her and thats what i did Thankfully nothing was broken but she would have to have surgery. So they stabalized her cleaned all the wounds, wrapped them and the next morning scuduled her for surgery. I called at 8am and the Dr. was already working on her. He stitched her up and put drains in her. She went home that evening and the next day she was up and walking. I took her back three days latter to get the drains out, and I was greated with a smile and hello. And they took my dog to the back, and she was out in 20 min. I asked how much I owed for the recheck and they didnt even charge me. The Dr. came out and greated me, and told me that Sugar was lucky to be alive! I told him she wasnt lucky, She was blessed by such a good Vet. I really beleive that God worked through Dr. Sam that day. to help sugar make it home to me.

Thank you Dr. Sam and staff.

This place is the worst animal hospital anyone can take their pets to. Just two days ago my cat's back two legs couldn't move, it seemed as if his legs were paralyzed. I immediately brought him to the hospital. The doctor seemed so impatient. We were billed $300 and had to pay $150 on the spot, the $300 included giving my cat an x-ray, take samples, boarding there, and fluids. When I went back around 7:30P.M to go see my cat the nurse sighed and in a RUDE voice said "We are cleaning and I am already late to pick up my kids, but I guess." When I asked her how my cat was doing she lied to me by saying how she was only the cleaning lady and doesn?t know anything. Yet she was the one that was picking up calls in the afternoon. The next day around 7:30A.M. I called to see how the cat was doing,a nurse picked up the phone and said that the doctors won't be there until 10A.M.I asked how the cat was doing and she said he looks good. Around 10:30A.M I get a call from the hospital and the doctor tells me that the cat had just passed away. I didn't know what to think so I asked him if he tried curing him and the doctor says "DID YOU NOT HEAR ME, HE PASSED AWAY!!" I went down there to pick my cat up with my friend and asked him what caused my cat?s death,he said the cat PROBABLY ate something poisonous that spread throughout his body and into his liver. I asked for a copy of the shots he gave my cats but he REFUSED to give me a copy of the card and DID NOT even allow me to look at it myself. They said they could only give me a copy of the report they took. The nurse billed me for $363, but it was $300 yesterday.I told her I already paid $150 when I came yesterday. She was like "Ohh!? and then subtracted $150, I was like what kind of hospital are you guys running here. If I didn't tell her that I already paid $150 she would have charge me a total of $513. I felt like all this hospital wanted to do was take my money and NOT HELP MY CAT. DO NOT SEND any of your pets there!!!

After routine lab work, teeth cleaning and skin tag removal. My pup is in pain and in shock! We have had her teeth cleaned on three occasions by our Vet in New Mexico. Never have I brought her home in this condition. When I picked her up (after a 45 minute wait) she was completely frightened and shaking. As the medications wore off, she was in so much pain that I couldn't even pick her up. All night long, she layed there in shock and was still in that condition the following day.
I rescued this pup a few years back. She had been very badly abused. I had recently taken her to two other Vets in this area and both were bad experiences for her. I spent hours looking for a Vet, checking ratings. I took her in and liked the Vet I met. I clearly explained her past and emphasized that I did not want her traumatized in any way. I was assured that she would not be. She seemed so sincere. My pup was scheduled for the procedures for the following day. She was dropped off at approximately 7:00am. By 3:00pm the procedures were still not done. She had gone without food or water since midnight. I also found out that the Vet I had seen the previous day was not even there! When I went to pick her up, after 35 minutes of waiting, I noticed a guy walk directly into the back with a leash. So I walked into the back and was abruptly stopped and asked what I was doing back there. I explained that I wanted to let my pup know that I was here and I also would like to see where she is. I was immediately told that I am not allowed back there and to get back into the waiting room. I commented that the facilities must be pretty bad if they are that worried about me seeing where they were keeping my pup. When the doctor came in, he could not even answer my questions stating that he had done so many surgeries that day and some procedures are done by technicians. I paid and left and will never go back. I should have known from the smell of the place and the crying.
