In Short
This joint attracts the hungry and the tired, the club hoppers who straggle in for breakfast and coffee before bed. Of course, the daylight hours are busy as well, especially weekend mornings. All the diner basics are here: steak and eggs, French toast, ham and cheese, a burger. The twist is in the gyro with eggs as breakfast or on a plate for lunch. There are also shakes, malts and freshly baked pies.

Key Points

  • Breakfast All Day
  • Smiling Service
  • Open 24 Hours

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - As for coffee, the basic needs are met: Pete's offers a bottomless cup of joe.
  2. When to Go - The out-the-door wait (even in winter) begins around 1:30am. So leave the bar early if you want to save your feet.

Pete's Kitchen

by Matt N. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,087

I used to go in here all the time on my way home from a night out downtown. Great breakfast plates served all day and night. It is a pretty hip place for after hours dining, especially on the weekends.

This place is good for one thing. Serving greasy garbage to drunks.

Just to let you know

by idodunks

I eat at this restaurant at least 3 times a week and am well known at the place. But this evening i went to get a to go order and there was man by the name of David that was rather rude so i walked out and went and gave my lil 20 dollars to the denver diner. Now that is not alot of money but 7 other people walked out with me when they observed the rudeness.. That is probably 150 dollars that Petes Kitchen didnt get.

Pros: Very good food

Cons: Davids customer service was terrible

Diner fare, local flair

by writeon1

I enjoy old-fashioned diners on occasion- you know what you're getting- greasy, filling and basically cheap food. At a Greek diner, you also get gyros and Greek salads, which is a nice bonus. But don't kid yourself- the management and staff are just hardworking, tough people who put up with a lot from the drunks and pseudo-hipsters who crawl in at all hours. Yes, I have also seen the cook handle all types of food without washing his hands or sanitizing anything. That's why you shouldn't eat there too often. But Denver doesn't offer a lot of late-night dining options, so I guess we're stuck with this. Pete's got a good thing going and I doubt he's going to change his ways. He's not a nice person and he's very cheap, so...good luck getting him to care about hygiene!

Pros: It's an old-fashioned diner

Cons: True, it's dirty and Pete is a rude cheapskate

Filthy. Yes, filthy

by utterlybad

Having been a resident of the area for the past two years I have frequented Pete's kitchen numerous times.

No time has been memorable. Just greasy, filling food after a night out.

However, and terribly, after going there on a whim tonight I will never be back. I sat at the bar and witnessed the cook make my "steak" sandwich. Of course you cannot cook to order here. I asked for medium well, but the end product was crisp as molten lava.

This is a side note though. There is an utter lack of hygiene. There was a Greek salad and two club sandwiches made after the cook handled my steak and after he put a burger patty together for another person.

No handwashing in between. Raw meat to veggies. Raw meat to bread. I will never be back and was thoroughly revolted from seeing this.

Don't give them business. Seriously. The guy grabbed a steak then made a salad. He then grabbed raw hamburger meat and made two club sandwiches. Makes me sick to think about it.

Pros: cooks handle raw meat then veggies

Cons: hygiene

ALMOST as bad as Toms Diner

by denveratnight

my friends went to petes kitchen for the first time last night & were horrified at the rude and slow service, at the greasy grill where i could actually watch the cook sweating into the cooking area of the grill, then wipe of his sweat w/ his hand & sling it off. oh how DISGUSTING. we couldn't wait to get out of there - even the smell of the restaurant was gross. i hope the health inspector reads this, or i may even contact him myself. even thought i saw rodent feces on the floor. DO NOT TO PETE's KITCHEN unless u can put up with what i've written.

Pros: none i could find

Cons: rude waitstaff, sweaty cooks over our food, slow to even bring beverages, bad smell

If you want to get sick, go to Pete's...

by ndoye

I took my 2 year old for a date at Pete's. We sat at the bar and I watched in horror as the cooks shamelessly used the same spatula to hurl loads of raw meat onto the grill as the one they used to flip grilled cheese sandwiches and make omelettes. Occassionally, they wiped the spatula on a filthy nasty rag that looked like it should be in the pocket of an auto mechanic. When I nicely told the stand-in manager, she gave me a bitchy smurk, as if I was irritating her. I will never set foot in there again. One could so easily get sick from eating anything that comes off that grill. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. The Health Deparment should shut them down, unless they can clean up their act.

Low level intelligence

by tcorona

Very low level competence on wait staff and management. myself and a friend were just finished ordering then suddenlly the poor excuse for a manager(which looked as she just rolled around the alley) came over and said I kicked her server. Myself and friend looked at each other in amazement as this never occured. I personally run a retail operation of close to 100 employees. If any of my employees ever said such a thing happened the customer would have immediately been made to leave. This "manager" obviously was being lied to as even after she had the police officer come over, who himself was quite annoyed, she still had no precedent nor the knowledge or experience to handle this said accusation. Very disappointed in the whole occasion. I have been to this location a half dozen times or so & after this occurence I will never be back & will let all others that I network with in the downtown area to make sure to avoid.

Best chicken kebab

by gmerc

My first visit was acually surprising because I thought I was was either on a military base or a police station (with all those cops around) But after we seated the service was amazingly fast, especially for a full house, and the food was freshly made for the right price. You can watch them preparing your food and you can observe the waitress all the time, which gives you a better feeling for the clean and safe way of your food.
The price is right and it is open 24/7.

Pros: quick and good tasting food, nice choice on the menu.

Cons: in the evening and the weekend always packed, and you better don't have an outstanding warant.

Well worth the wait in line

by themasters15

I have lived in Capital Hill for over 5 years. I like Pets Kitchen as the Servers are down to earth and love to joke with you. Cosy non corporate atsmophere makes it an ideal place to hang out after an even or even just meet for Breakfast, lunch, Dinner, or even a late night snack. One bad thing is there is always a line, no matter what time of day. Well worth the wait though.

Pros: Food, Servers, able to watch food being prepaired, lighting, seating

The best place to take an out-of-towner

by loopner004

The small diner atmosphere, the cheap prices, and the excellent food is what keeps me coming back. The service is decent and appropriate for this kitchen, but there was one thing I did not like about Pete's; they always bring the bill right after the food comes out making me feel rushed to leave. I have been here several times, ranging from all sorts of different hours. They are always busy (but not too busy) and kind with their service. The great thing about Pete's is the fact that you can come at any hour of the day and the food is consistantly appetizing. Everything I have tried thus far has been out of this world good. For example, the pancakes are fluffy and warm (best pancakes I have ever had) and the hashbrowns are homemade in such a different and better way than I have ever tried before. Pete's Kitchen is a legend, and everyone who comes to Denver should try it!!!

Best Diner in Denver

I absolutely love Pete's. After eating there for many years I cannot recall a bad experience. Great food and service. The wait staff has always been friendly. Try their breakfast burrito. To die for! Best greasy spoon in Denver!

Pros: Food and service is outstanding

Cons: Can be a long wait if you show up after last call on a Friday or Saturday night

Good service, great food

by mariposa_nana

Good service, great food and good place to people watch, especially late at night. Recommend Pete's Platter, serves like 3 people and has a little of everything. Togo's are fast and even if the food is a little greasy there is no trans-fat. (read the signs)

Pros: lots of parking and fast service

Cons: slight wait in line after the bars close

Rude Service, Terrible Food AND BU GS!! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!

by lfhcps

Went here for MY BIRTHDAY and had a TERRIBLE experience! Came in to visit from out of town and checked it out here ignoring the greasy reviews...BIG MISTAKE! COCKA-ROAC-HES & BAD SERVICE

I ordered the GYRO which is supposed to be their "specialty"...if that is I hate to think what the rest of the food is like! The meat was dry like jerkey as if it had been standing out all day and completely inedible...plus didn't come with anything except for meat and pita and fries super greasy and gross no salad or anything to cover the taste of the meat. I kept having to run down the server for drinks and the she ignored customers constantly to read some gossip magazine. When I complained about the Gyro and asked for something else I was told by the cashier girl that "they would NOT PAY FOR MY MEAL"

THEN I order hot chocolate that looks like it has a coat of gasoline on the surface shiney like grease...I look to my right out of the booth and see a HUGE R-O. A-C-H!!! AFTER BEING INGORED SEVERAL TIMES I asked the register girl if "I should K-I- L-L it or if she wanted to?"...she chased it down in front of us then stepped on it till it squirted YUM! I said this is just gross I can't eat this food and she got really nasty with me saying "HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A KITCHEN BEFORE?? YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE B-U GS!" I said no you are going to have a he alth co de violat ion! IT was a MISERABLE BIRTHDAY MISTAKE

Glad I was getting speacial treatment for my BIRTHDAY talk about customer service they know how to keep you coming back!!! I am reporting them to the He-alth D-ep art-ment and HIGHLY encourage any intelligent person on this site to avoid this place at all costs! It isn't worth the GAS, MONEY, WAIT, SERVICE, B -U-G-S OR FOOD

Pros: RUDE Service and Bad Food 24 hours a DAY

Cons: Lazy and RUDE Service, Greasy or DRY FOOD, DIRTY KITCHEN, BU GS!!!!

don't hesitate!

by gabbahnhof

Ok, there's just some places you go because that's where you go. Service, irrelevant. Prices, irrelevant. Even food, irrelevant. Get the "gyro plate" for 8 buckaroos at 2:30am late on a Friday night and you can put away your knife and fork until breakfast Monday.

I've heard stories ranging from "...and then the cop let us go and we went to get a bite at Pete's" to "...and then my girl friend passed out in the gutter on Colfax, and when she came to we went to Pete's." Waitresses range from junior high drop outs to your best friend's grandmother. Please don't arrive at Pete's for "brunch." Please don't arrive with sunglasses resting in your hair. Please don't linger to enjoy your meal. If you are going to linger, it better be cuz you're trying to remember where you live. I want to see 6-day stubble when you walk in that door -- you too women. I want to see red eyes as you look over your menu. I want to see you pay your bill with crumbled dollar bills -- especially you women! And get a chocolate shake, and plan to drink only half. Yep, you know. Don't hesitate. Gyro plate for 8 buckaroos.

Dizzyingly greasy

by lulucopeland

I decided to try Pete's because ever since I moved to Denver not too long ago the place always looked packed. Even when we went there it was crowded, but it did not take long to get our table and the service was fairly fast. However, the food was so greasy my body could not take it. I had the corn beef hash and it was good (of course any food soaked in fat will taste good), but when I got home I started feeling dizzy. During the course of the day I felt as if the corn beef just sat in my stomach. I think my digestive system simply refused to process that grease load of food. God bless us.
Anyway, if you're used to eating healthy, low fat food, then this place is not for you because it's going to give your body the shock of a lifetime. Take it easy.

Pros: reasonable price, prompt seating

Cons: heart attack, indigestion, heartburn

Best After Party Food Stop

by moodeous2

Pete's is one of those great joints churning out delicious diner style breakfast at all hours of the day and night at bargain prices. And pretty much any time you stop by you should be prepared to wait your turn to be seated. If its 4am and you're standing around in a wedding dress after partying all night long or if its 10am and you just woke up, you'll wait.

It's small, its fast and its tasty. Wait staff is quick and efficient. Occasionally you'll get a gal who will chat you up a bit, but don't expect it. These servers are busy busy and the best advice is to stand back and watch it all happen. A neighborhood atmosphere and great people watching are additional pluses in my book.

Pros: Tasty breakfast at great prices, fun fast paced traditional diner atmosphere, quick service any time of the day!

Cons: Almost always a wait and on a cold day it will be outside.

Nice stop after a night out

by sweetkness

We made a quick stop here after walking from the Great American Beer Festival. We were a bit too drunk and tired I'm afraid to offer detailed critique. But if your a fan of Gyros or just a good place to fill up before heading home for the evening, this is your place. Service was decent for a place of this nature, I would say I was almost a little intimidated. We really wanted to get back, so we just stuffed it down. The wifes cheeseburger didn't look like anything impressive.....but try the gyro, or any other item containing gyro meat!

Pros: Gyros, Value

Cons: Location

What's The Fuss About?

by thafindizzle

I read about this place and made the trek up Colfax to check it out. I can't really say anything bad about Pete's Kitchen. The service was good and the food wasn't bad. I tried the breakfast burrito (supposed to be great) and I was a little dissapointed. It's very basic with egg, hashbrowns, and sausage wrapped in a tortilla with green chile on top. This would be alright but the green chile was pasty and tasted like it was made from a powder mix and had beensitting on the steam for hours. I'm just not sure this place is worth going out of your way.

Pros: Cool history, greasy spoonesq

Cons: Low quality food

Diner food and atmosphere at its best

by nothingtoday

Where else can you have gyros in your omelette, a gigantic burrito stuffed with gyros, or anything else you desire with gyros? This is a people-watching mecca, and you are sure to see some interesting stuff. If there's a line outside, do not panic. It is well worth the wait.

Someone really needs to use Pete's in a movie scene.

Pros: Great food, Gyros, gyros, gyros, Did I mention gyros?

Cons: Sometimes long lines

never again!

by dleyba05

Let's just say that me and my family have been going to Pete's for what seems like ages. When we go there we always order Pete's Greek Platter. This is delicious, but the service sucked! Not only did it take our waitress forever to get to us, but we actually had to track this woman down! Finally she took our order, but she sucked at her job and her personality was that of a maggot. (no joking) Our food was great of course, but that in itself will not keep us from continuing there. Beware of those that order this wonderful concoction.....Pete's likes to scam people by charging for an extra plate to share this feast!. 1.00 for just a plate to share is ridiculous pete. It says so in fine print at the bottom, bring a magnifying glass! never again!

Pros: delicious food

Cons: sucky waitress, sucky service, dirty glasses

Great place to eat after down town calls it a night; however, watch out for the bouncer in the top hat. He will do his best to send you across the street to IHOP for standing in the wrong place or holding the door open on a brisk 60 degree evening. Once you slip past his firewall the rest of your experience will meet the expectations of the most finnicky late night diner.

Pete's is one of the most (if not the most) after party haunts in central denver. It boasts the tastiest greasy spoon menu, and nobody's gonna argue with a chili smothered breatkfast burrito after a night of partying hard on the town. Pete's definitely has the greatest breakfast food- but I can't really say I've been there more than once during the daylight... a perfect choice for those who eat breakfast before they crash.

Good But Not The Best...

by Reinseug

Good but not the best...Although Pete's Kitchen is a good place to get breakfast there is another little hideaway that serves a better breakfast burrito that is smothered in green chili with the best ever hash browns. That place is Pete's Steak House that is just a little further West of Pete's Kitchen on Colfax. It is not a fancy place, but for the price and a good breakfast, it can't be beat.

Pros: food, Inexpensive

Cons: smoky, building

Not worth the wait!

by larry2439

The food is OK but not that great to wait up to 30 minutes or more. I have been in the food service market before and I have never waited to be served in a diner for more than 10 minutes. I would wait for dinner no more than 30 minutes however, at least one could enjoy a cocktail and not have to wait in the outdoors. This place is over rated as much as all the other restaurants owned by this person of business!

Second to Tom

by timyoung1963

I don't get it? Why do people queue for this overpriced greasy slop when you can get twice the quality at half the price at Tom's Diner just up Colfax? I had a shocking breakfast at Petes Kitchen served by a miserable waitress whose surly attitude better suited an up market French restaurant. Admittedly the walls of Tom's Diner are not adorned with references from second rate local media personalities and magazines, but if you are looking for the true American diner experience top food, best prices, excellent quality with some interesting people watching thrown in, then Toms wins every time.

Cons: greast, overpriced, crowded

Pete's IS the Best

The lines on Sunday morning can't be wrong. Pete's IS the place for breakfast. Before he died, my Dad wanted to go to Pete's when he visited. My brother-in-law from Chicago got up early before golf last week to go down to Pete's for Breakfast. It's the People's Choice because it is filled with ALL kinds of People. If you are looking for Eggs Benedict, go to the Fourth Story, but if you want a great ham and cheese omelette - PETE's!!!!!

Pros: Good Food, Great Mix of People, Reliable
