Forget about all the rude comments you've read about Pete's Kitchen. This is the best place to go when you've been clubbing all night, or wake up and want an awesome breakfast. I've been going to Pete's since I lived in Seattle from 2001 to 2003, while I lived in Denver from 2003 to 2007, and thrice since I moved to Twin Falls, ID for college in 2007. I love Pete's. Rather go there than the sub-par place (old IHOP) across the street, or even Tom's Diner on Colfax in Denver.
I LOVE PETE's KITCHEN! Booya!
This was our third time at the petes on Colfax within a 3 week period, food is great and the service has been great up until tonight. Our waitress was rude and slow, her attitude was less to be desired and you could tell it was affecting not only the other people working but other customers. The couple behind us even moved so the other waitress (who was nice) could wait on them. Sorry when you are in this industry you need to serve people and put on your smile. We will continue to go back but if she is our waitress I will ask to be moved.
I rate the food very good, service not so much
Maybe it was because it was late night and I was hungry, but after the bars close, PETE's is the palce to chow.\r
Actually I've been here during daylight and its always just as good.
I ordered by breakfast and practically got it before I was done talking to my friends.
The atmosphere feels a little cramped, but the place is packed too.
Hot fresh food....YUM
Truly unbelievable breakfast joint. Not just breakfast, but breakfast at all hours. The breakfast burrito is hands down the best I ever had. This place is a money making machine because it works. Great people there, Cool waitresses, crazy people, nuts people, good people. Great food, good time, good fun. I think most breakfast joints miss the fact that Gyro meat in breakfast food is the best thing since bloody mary's with beer chasers at breakfast. Actually, that is the only thing Pete's desperately needs.
Always great service, and inexpensive food after a night downtown! Great anytime before or after! Location is easy to find...A+ experiences!
Just a shout out to one of the best diners in the USA! I have breakfast there a couple of times a month and I am reminded that I've been eating there for over 30 years and never had a bad meal! Always great, friendly service, good wholesome food, great prices; what more can you ask? Maybe the location and atmosphere aren't for everyone, but it is a Denver Landmark in a true sense. If it ever disappears I'll be way sad.
First thing: Pete's parking lot is dark and I have been approached by men a few times and it was as scary as it was downright annoying.
The small diner gets super crowded and is a ""seat yourself"" (if you even find a seat). The tables are always dirty as if they wipe the tables down with the same greasey rag for days. The waitress doesn't have to bring you menus or silverware, it's all at your table which really, all she does is bring your food. Not really earning a full tip (We don't tip McDonald's employees for taking our orders and giving our food to us.)
The fries are super greasey and sometimes are a bit burned. The food doesn't really have a great taste, very bland. The only plus is that they service gyro.
The crowd that goes in are ""cool"" scene kids, college kids, and drunks. Real lame crowd. A bunch of evesdroppers.
It gets packed after bars let out and is not worth the wait outside. Head to Tom's or Breakfast King.
Pros: Gyros at 2am
Cons: Crowded, patio is dim & cold, dirty tables
Whoah, I can't believe this rat trap is still in business. Never, never, never, never ever go here. Ick, I had to walk out!
Pros: Absolutely nothing!
The first thing I noticed when I sat down was the filth. The menu had sticky sauce ALL OVER IT. There were crumbs, dust and greasy goo all over my table. And when I asked for a clean menu, I was rudely told there were no more menus available. The server didnt even offer to clean my menu. There clearly were plenty of menus on all of the other empty tables.
So I ordered my food, and then saw the cook in the kitchen. He was scratching his thick beard while he was cooking, and then clearly touched the bare food without washing his hands. I decided to leave as I couldn't possibly eat any food at this point. What did I get on the way out? Hassle and attitude from the hostess, who was also apparently a manager. Don't go here unless you want a gut wrenching case of gastrointestinal disease.
This dump is the worst restaurant I've been in. The food was despicable. The server was inattentive and rude. I will NEVER be going back here!
Pros: Absolutely none
Cons: Where do I start?
Everything was wrong here. I haven't had such a horrible diner experience in years. And I've been here in the past. But man, was this incredibly grotesque. Horrible food was matched with horrible service for a total score of F-. I had to sanitize my hands after I left that dump. All I can say is DON'T GO THERE!
Guess I got what I deserved for eating at a restaurant on Colfax... ick!
Pros: They had tables and chairs
Cons: The tables and chairs were dirty
Woah, talk about nasty! I can't believe this place is in business. Grime everywhere, dirty tables, poor service, and even worse food. I haven't eaten fast food for years, but this place made McDonalds sound spectacular. Words can't explain my disgust. Horrendous. Simply horrendous.
Pros: I didn't get beat by my server
Just ate there today, and it will definitely be the last time. The green chili on the breakfast burrito tasted like someone sneezed in my mouth. It was a thick, slimy mess. The hashbrowns in the burrito were burned. We got a side of corned beef hash, which was no better. It tasted like ground up Spam mixed with mushy potatos, and it looked so foul sitting on the plate in a puddle of grease. Even my glass of orange juice was gross. Whoever made the orange juice didn't do a good job of mixing the concentrate, so again, another slimy mess in my mouth. And to top it all off, the drinking water SMELLED LIKE SEWAGE. Never have I left a restaurant so disgusted. I almost vomited in the parking lot on my way out. And the restaurant is completely filthy, I really hope I don't get a disease from eating there. Prisoners in jail eat better than that.
I've been in Denver for well over 15 years and you can always rely on Pete's for (1) cheap food and (2) a very lively clientele. \r
That being said...it's impossible to look past the exceptionally rude waitstaff. I stopped in one night to place a 'to go' order and you would think that I was asking the waitress for her first-born child. If I wasn't famished I would have turned around and walked out (which I should have done) but I toughed it out and waited 20 minutes for....a bowl of green chili!! All they had to do was scoop out a cup of soup and wrap 2 tortillas and it took 20 minutes! \r
Needless to say, the food is acceptable but the poor service is not. I'm definitely heading to The Breakfast King on Mississippi and Santa Fe the next time a late night craving hits...much better service and less attitude.
Pros: Cheap and open 24/7...what else can a gal ask for?
Cons: Service as cold as the former Soviet Bloc
I ate at Pete's Kitchen the first few times with no problem receiving good service and great food. I went by myself to Pete's a few weeks ago expecting the same great service. However on this particular night that I entered Pete's waiting to be seated, I was told by the extremely rude Cashier (I learned later she was the Manager) to just get on a stool as there were no booths available for single people. How horribly rude as I am a paying customer and an older lady with a back problem. So, I told her that sitting on a stool is out of the question. A young waitress then proceeded to give me a ""mini lecture"" that at night single people have to sit on the stools. Eventually, I was seated at the little table next to the window that was so uncomfortable. The rude manager seemed to take pride in her rude behavior. I mentioned to the waitress that it is unprofessional and rude to discriminate. Since I believe in giving second chances, I returned about 2 weeks later by myself right before 10p one night. This time there was a different cashier manager that was so polite and nice telling me I could sit anywhere I choose. This time the waitress was rude as she proceeded to give me a stern lecture while I was sitting in my booth scanning the menu (It was not crowded that night) humiliating me. The waitress then went back to the manager and made a point of making the manager realize that I should not sit in a booth since I am by myself. After this waitress had a 5 minute discussion with the manager she returned and gave me lecture telling me she would allow me a booth this time. She said in the future I cannot have a booth if I eat at Pete's after 10p by myself. To make matters worse, I ordered a well done steak breakfast and received a very rare steak that was eventually corrected although it was full of fat. The food was not that good as well. I always spent over $10 and left a good tip. As long as I am alive, I will NEVER RETURN TO PETE'S KITCHEN. This management staff should be ashamed of their behavior. Just remember, ""what goes around comes around."" Mistreating people does not go unnoticed by God. I am just a nice lady who wanted a good meal in a comfortable environment with nice waitstaff/management.
Pros: One great waitress - Natalie
Cons: RUDE MANAGEMENT
This place is good for one thing. Serving greasy garbage to drunks.
Cons: How much time do you have?
I eat at this restaurant at least 3 times a week and am well known at the place. But this evening i went to get a to go order and there was man by the name of David that was rather rude so i walked out and went and gave my lil 20 dollars to the denver diner. Now that is not alot of money but 7 other people walked out with me when they observed the rudeness.. That is probably 150 dollars that Petes Kitchen didnt get.
Pros: Very good food
Cons: Davids customer service was terrible
I enjoy old-fashioned diners on occasion- you know what you're getting- greasy, filling and basically cheap food. At a Greek diner, you also get gyros and Greek salads, which is a nice bonus. But don't kid yourself- the management and staff are just hardworking, tough people who put up with a lot from the drunks and pseudo-hipsters who crawl in at all hours. Yes, I have also seen the cook handle all types of food without washing his hands or sanitizing anything. That's why you shouldn't eat there too often. But Denver doesn't offer a lot of late-night dining options, so I guess we're stuck with this. Pete's got a good thing going and I doubt he's going to change his ways. He's not a nice person and he's very cheap, so...good luck getting him to care about hygiene!
Pros: It's an old-fashioned diner
Cons: True, it's dirty and Pete is a rude cheapskate
Having been a resident of the area for the past two years I have frequented Pete's kitchen numerous times.
No time has been memorable. Just greasy, filling food after a night out.
However, and terribly, after going there on a whim tonight I will never be back. I sat at the bar and witnessed the cook make my ""steak"" sandwich. Of course you cannot cook to order here. I asked for medium well, but the end product was crisp as molten lava.
This is a side note though. There is an utter lack of hygiene. There was a Greek salad and two club sandwiches made after the cook handled my steak and after he put a burger patty together for another person.
No handwashing in between. Raw meat to veggies. Raw meat to bread. I will never be back and was thoroughly revolted from seeing this.
Don't give them business. Seriously. The guy grabbed a steak then made a salad. He then grabbed raw hamburger meat and made two club sandwiches. Makes me sick to think about it.
Pros: cooks handle raw meat then veggies
my friends went to petes kitchen for the first time last night & were horrified at the rude and slow service, at the greasy grill where i could actually watch the cook sweating into the cooking area of the grill, then wipe of his sweat w/ his hand & sling it off. oh how DISGUSTING. we couldn't wait to get out of there - even the smell of the restaurant was gross. i hope the health inspector reads this, or i may even contact him myself. even thought i saw rodent feces on the floor. DO NOT TO PETE's KITCHEN unless u can put up with what i've written.
Pros: none i could find
Cons: rude waitstaff, sweaty cooks over our food, slow to even bring beverages, bad smell
I took my 2 year old for a date at Pete's. We sat at the bar and I watched in horror as the cooks shamelessly used the same spatula to hurl loads of raw meat onto the grill as the one they used to flip grilled cheese sandwiches and make omelettes. Occassionally, they wiped the spatula on a filthy nasty rag that looked like it should be in the pocket of an auto mechanic. When I nicely told the stand-in manager, she gave me a bitchy smurk, as if I was irritating her. I will never set foot in there again. One could so easily get sick from eating anything that comes off that grill. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. The Health Deparment should shut them down, unless they can clean up their act.
If it is 2am and the bars are closed. Time to head to Pete's for a Breakfast Gyro. Trust me it is what you need.
Very low level competence on wait staff and management. myself and a friend were just finished ordering then suddenlly the poor excuse for a manager(which looked as she just rolled around the alley) came over and said I kicked her server. Myself and friend looked at each other in amazement as this never occured. I personally run a retail operation of close to 100 employees. If any of my employees ever said such a thing happened the customer would have immediately been made to leave. This ""manager"" obviously was being lied to as even after she had the police officer come over, who himself was quite annoyed, she still had no precedent nor the knowledge or experience to handle this said accusation. Very disappointed in the whole occasion. I have been to this location a half dozen times or so & after this occurence I will never be back & will let all others that I network with in the downtown area to make sure to avoid.
My first visit was acually surprising because I thought I was was either on a military base or a police station (with all those cops around) But after we seated the service was amazingly fast, especially for a full house, and the food was freshly made for the right price. You can watch them preparing your food and you can observe the waitress all the time, which gives you a better feeling for the clean and safe way of your food.\r
The price is right and it is open 24/7.
Pros: quick and good tasting food, nice choice on the menu.
Cons: in the evening and the weekend always packed, and you better don't have an outstanding warant.
I have lived in Capital Hill for over 5 years. I like Pets Kitchen as the Servers are down to earth and love to joke with you. Cosy non corporate atsmophere makes it an ideal place to hang out after an even or even just meet for Breakfast, lunch, Dinner, or even a late night snack. One bad thing is there is always a line, no matter what time of day. Well worth the wait though.
Pros: Food, Servers, able to watch food being prepaired, lighting, seating
The small diner atmosphere, the cheap prices, and the excellent food is what keeps me coming back. The service is decent and appropriate for this kitchen, but there was one thing I did not like about Pete's; they always bring the bill right after the food comes out making me feel rushed to leave. I have been here several times, ranging from all sorts of different hours. They are always busy (but not too busy) and kind with their service. The great thing about Pete's is the fact that you can come at any hour of the day and the food is consistantly appetizing. Everything I have tried thus far has been out of this world good. For example, the pancakes are fluffy and warm (best pancakes I have ever had) and the hashbrowns are homemade in such a different and better way than I have ever tried before. Pete's Kitchen is a legend, and everyone who comes to Denver should try it!!!
I absolutely love Pete's. After eating there for many years I cannot recall a bad experience. Great food and service. The wait staff has always been friendly. Try their breakfast burrito. To die for! Best greasy spoon in Denver!
Pros: Food and service is outstanding
Cons: Can be a long wait if you show up after last call on a Friday or Saturday night
Good service, great food and good place to people watch, especially late at night. Recommend Pete's Platter, serves like 3 people and has a little of everything. Togo's are fast and even if the food is a little greasy there is no trans-fat. (read the signs)
Pros: lots of parking and fast service
Cons: slight wait in line after the bars close
Went here for MY BIRTHDAY and had a TERRIBLE experience! Came in to visit from out of town and checked it out here ignoring the greasy reviews...BIG MISTAKE! COCKA-ROAC-HES & BAD SERVICE\r
I ordered the GYRO which is supposed to be their ""specialty""...if that is I hate to think what the rest of the food is like! The meat was dry like jerkey as if it had been standing out all day and completely inedible...plus didn't come with anything except for meat and pita and fries super greasy and gross no salad or anything to cover the taste of the meat. I kept having to run down the server for drinks and the
THEN I order hot chocolate that looks like it has a coat of gasoline on the surface shiney like grease...I look to my right out of the booth and see a HUGE R-O. A-C-H!!! AFTER BEING INGORED SEVERAL TIMES I asked the register girl if ""I should K-I- L-L it or if she wanted to?""...she chased it down in front of us then stepped on it till it squirted YUM! I said this is just gross I can't eat this food and she got really nasty with me saying ""HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A KITCHEN BEFORE?? YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE B-U GS!"" I said no you are going to have a he alth co de violat ion! IT was a MISERABLE BIRTHDAY MISTAKE \r
Glad I was getting speacial treatment for my BIRTHDAY talk about customer service they know how to keep you coming back!!! I am reporting them to the He-alth D-ep art-ment and HIGHLY encourage any intelligent person on this site to avoid this place at all costs! It isn't worth the GAS, MONEY, WAIT, SERVICE, B -U-G-S OR FOOD
Pros: RUDE Service and Bad Food 24 hours a DAY
Cons: Lazy and RUDE Service, Greasy or DRY FOOD, DIRTY KITCHEN, BU GS!!!!
Ok, there's just some places you go because that's where you go. Service, irrelevant. Prices, irrelevant. Even food, irrelevant. Get the ""gyro plate"" for 8 buckaroos at 2:30am late on a Friday night and you can put away your knife and fork until breakfast Monday. \r
I've heard stories ranging from ""...and then the cop let us go and we went to get a bite at Pete's"" to ""...and then my girl friend passed out in the gutter on Colfax, and when she came to we went to Pete's."" Waitresses range from junior high drop outs to your best friend's grandmother. Please don't arrive at Pete's for ""brunch."" Please don't arrive with sunglasses resting in your hair. Please don't linger to enjoy your meal. If you are going to linger, it better be cuz you're trying to remember where you live. I want to see 6-day stubble when you walk in that door -- you too women. I want to see red eyes as you look over your menu. I want to see you pay your bill with crumbled dollar bills -- especially you women! And get a chocolate shake, and plan to drink only half. Yep, you know. Don't hesitate. Gyro plate for 8 buckaroos.
I decided to try Pete's because ever since I moved to Denver not too long ago the place always looked packed. Even when we went there it was crowded, but it did not take long to get our table and the service was fairly fast. However, the food was so greasy my body could not take it. I had the corn beef hash and it was good (of course any food soaked in fat will taste good), but when I got home I started feeling dizzy. During the course of the day I felt as if the corn beef just sat in my stomach. I think my digestive system simply refused to process that grease load of food. God bless us. \r
Anyway, if you're used to eating healthy, low fat food, then this place is not for you because it's going to give your body the shock of a lifetime. Take it easy.
Pros: reasonable price, prompt seating
Cons: heart attack, indigestion, heartburn
Pete's is one of those great joints churning out delicious diner style breakfast at all hours of the day and night at bargain prices. And pretty much any time you stop by you should be prepared to wait your turn to be seated. If its 4am and you're standing around in a wedding dress after partying all night long or if its 10am and you just woke up, you'll wait. \r
It's small, its fast and its tasty. Wait staff is quick and efficient. Occasionally you'll get a gal who will chat you up a bit, but don't expect it. These servers are busy busy and the best advice is to stand back and watch it all happen. A neighborhood atmosphere and great people watching are additional pluses in my book.
Pros: Tasty breakfast at great prices, fun fast paced traditional diner atmosphere, quick service any time of the day!
Cons: Almost always a wait and on a cold day it will be outside.
We made a quick stop here after walking from the Great American Beer Festival. We were a bit too drunk and tired I'm afraid to offer detailed critique. But if your a fan of Gyros or just a good place to fill up before heading home for the evening, this is your place. Service was decent for a place of this nature, I would say I was almost a little intimidated. We really wanted to get back, so we just stuffed it down. The wifes cheeseburger didn't look like anything impressive.....but try the gyro, or any other item containing gyro meat!
Pros: Gyros, Value
A little joint right out of a Tom Waits song. Bohemian neighborhood, cool waiters, strong coffee, eclectic crowd (mostly free of Cole-Hahn wearing yuppies who stay in LoDo), and good eats.
Pros: Good food, cool people
I read about this place and made the trek up Colfax to check it out. I can't really say anything bad about Pete's Kitchen. The service was good and the food wasn't bad. I tried the breakfast burrito (supposed to be great) and I was a little dissapointed. It's very basic with egg, hashbrowns, and sausage wrapped in a tortilla with green chile on top. This would be alright but the green chile was pasty and tasted like it was made from a powder mix and had beensitting on the steam for hours. I'm just not sure this place is worth going out of your way.
Pros: Cool history, greasy spoonesq
Cons: Low quality food
Where else can you have gyros in your omelette, a gigantic burrito stuffed with gyros, or anything else you desire with gyros? This is a people-watching mecca, and you are sure to see some interesting stuff. If there's a line outside, do not panic. It is well worth the wait.
Someone really needs to use Pete's in a movie scene.
Pros: Great food, Gyros, gyros, gyros, Did I mention gyros?
Cons: Sometimes long lines
Let's just say that me and my family have been going to Pete's for what seems like ages. When we go there we always order Pete's Greek Platter. This is delicious, but the service sucked! Not only did it take our waitress forever to get to us, but we actually had to track this woman down! Finally she took our order, but she sucked at her job and her personality was that of a maggot. (no joking) Our food was great of course, but that in itself will not keep us from continuing there. Beware of those that order this wonderful concoction.....Pete's likes to scam people by charging for an extra plate to share this feast!. 1.00 for just a plate to share is ridiculous pete. It says so in fine print at the bottom, bring a magnifying glass! never again!
Pros: delicious food
Cons: sucky waitress, sucky service, dirty glasses
son of boss fat slob - food sucks
yu will throw up when yu see bosses son
Pros: greasy food
Cons: rude service
We loved this place!!! We came across it on t he internet and when we were in Denver, we specifically drove here to eat. The food was awesome...the staff is very friendly!! Myhubby says the pork chili is to die for....HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend!!!!!
Pros: GREAT FOOD, GREAT HELP, GREAT VALUE
I can't believe Pete's Kitchen did not make the best burger list. I have tried a few of the top rated burger's joints on the list and noting compares to Pete's
Pros: Inexpensive, Good parking, Fantastic Food
Pete's has the best breakfast burrito ever! The restaurant is always packed, but that is what makes it so fun late at night!
This is the best place to people watch. Everyone wanders through Pete's. Where else can you sit next to drag queens, goths and business men. Everyone is super friendly, sometime a little too friendly. :) I have never been disappointed at Pete's. Plus the food is great.
A hangover must. Great diner food with a classic diner atmosphere. No wonder it's always so busy late weekend mornings.
Pros: Good breakfast, Cheap
They have the most incredible food. Anything you get will be wonderful!!!!!!!
