Rustique is a french bistro we visit each & every time we come to Aspen. Its food isn't unique; it's far from plush; it's casual with stucco walls, terra cotta tiles on the floor, heavy dark wood chairs, bundles of dried herbs hanging from the beamed ceilings, & tables whose cloths are covered with white butcher paper.

We knew we wanted mussels but there were other things that appealed so we ordered indiscriminately, not caring if it was too much, too little, or whether everything went together properly.

We began with salads: endive, arugula, poached pears, & roquefort for my husband & mixed greens with asparagus, red & yellow tomatoes, julienned endive with a dijon vinaigrette for me. They looked beautiful & were fresh & tasty.

The mussels were served accompanied by a small french bread inside a paper bag. Perfect, & pommes frites placed in a paper cone were crispy & delicious. A side order of caramelized brussels sprouts was added to the meal & they were drop-dead wonderful, sweet, rich-tasting, just fabulous!

On the way home we discussed what constitutes a price/satifaction ratio. I have to admit that over $100 for mussels & pommes frites + a few side dishes, a beer and a glass of wine is a bit steep, but in the context of an evening that was pure pleasure from beginning to end, the price was worth it. There's no doubt we'll return before the end of our stay.

Pros: The Food was great

Cons: Make a reservation

I had never heard of a "Bar Menu" that had more than calamari or nachos before until Aspen. Most restaurants have a Bar Menu that consists of soup, salads, fish, steak all for under $15-20. Our group of two couples had: frog legs, salmon, steak and beef risotto. The steak was the best she had ever had and my risotta was quite yummy. Paired with a glass or wine per couple, a soup shared, dessert and tax our bill only came to $80/couple! Great deal in Aspen!

The only downside is that it is first come first serve, but with 5 tables of 4 and 10 or so seats at the bar, the wait isn't too long.

Pros: Great value for Aspen

Cons: Might have to wait for a table since you can't make a reservation at the bar.

The "wierd foods" are usually the best thing on the menu while the traditional fare is usuallyover-salted. My favorite was sheep brains. The dining room is crowded and too noisy. No booster seats or high chairs or viable alternatives for children.
