We went in 2006 in November and was given a tour by a Park Ranger that was dressed like a blonde haired Buffalo Bill. He was great.

Our second trip was in November 2011. We didn't stay long as it was getting near closing time. The staff didn't seem as friendly this time--maybe it had been a long day. As a side note, there was a young cat in the field and parking lot area greeting people that were walking to and from the Fort. As we were heading out, we fed her what we had with us--some dog food in a bowl which she wolfed down.

I couldn't stop thinking about her so I made a 6 hour round trip back down there the next day and sure enough she was still out in the field. The rangers had told us the previous day she had been hanging around for a month. We adopted her.

If you are at all interested in American history, then a trip to Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site should be in your future. About 8 miles east of the pleasant small city of La Junta, CO (7,500 people, which makes it a city by local standards), Bent's Old Fort is truly a trip back in time. With it's rural setting and meticulously restored and re-created facilities, you can really get a sense of what it was like to have been there in the 1830s and 1840s. That was when this was THE center of commerce for hundreds of miles. The staff there, both paid and volunteer, are of course invaluable to adding to the authenticity of your experience. There is also available an informative introductory video and self-guided tour brochure. The fort takes up a very small per centage of the 799 acre property, but that is actually a very good thing. Not only are the hundreds of acres of wild space great for their own sake, they help add to the illusion of going back in time. The excellent gift shop on site is also very unobtrusive, you actually have to look for it!

Bents fort was a fun to go to. It was easy to find and not very expensive to get into. When you park you have to walk pretty far and also with in the park is a lot of walking. so I would were good walking shoes. all of the paths are dirt so I would suggest wearing closed shoes. the gift shop was fun and had a lot of cool things so you should stop by it.
