If ever in the past I have patronized a restaurant with less than stellar food and/or service, I will occasionally return to give the benefit of the doubt. That being said, my first experience at Le Central was unsatisfactory. The staff is uneducated in wine selection (never saw a sommelier) and stomped around the dining area as if in a mosh pit. The food was forgettable. I was not impressed. I was hesitant to return, however it is a five minute walk from my place and convenience won over cynicism.
Again the staff, who still can't recommend or even pronounce the wines served, continue to stomp around (a couple times even sprinting) in such an unbelievably unprofessional manner.
I ordered the escargot. What was presented to me was the thickest bowl of ultra-garlic mush I have ever tasted. The snails were like shriveled raisins. I think the intention was to mask the quality of the escargot with the overwhelming garlic and butter. Now, I have had freshly made escargot and Le Central's "version" is not even a comparison. For my second course, I was served a scallop salad. Ugh. Sand in the scallops and entirely too much dressing. The greens were wilted in a soup of vinaigrette. My date ordered chicken which, upon arrival, was completely cold. He asked for it to be heated. Then of course it was rubbery from the microwave. We left in disgust. When the manager (I suspect, because he didn't introduce himself) asked if we were unhappy with our dishes I didn't bother to run through the list of complaints. I knew after this SECOND visit that I would not be returning. I have since then spoken to many friends (two of which are French living in Denver) about Le Central and no one had anything positive to report. I cannot believe it continues to get decent to even GOOD ratings! On a shallow note, the decor is not charming, it's incohesive and tacky.

Pros: I could walk there to spit on it

Cons: It confuses itself with a decent french restaurant

I love the affordable French restaurant. This is a Denver favorite. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The staff is always friendly and helpful. For 20 some years I've never had anything except an excellent experience at le Central. Highly recommend it.

This bistro has a very homey feel to it. They specialize in provincial French cuisine. Their food is wonderful and the service excellent. Try the mussels or the steak au poivre.

My parents are from Lyon, France. This food is authentic to the country-side of France.
I love this restuarant and the patio is beautiful in the evening. I always request to be seated there, even if it makes the wait longer. And a warning: even with reservations there can be a lengthy wait...but just pop over to the little wine bar and pick your favorite French vino, and sip away the time!

The mussels are one of the best dining deals in town: a whole bucket of moules in savory white-wine based broths and endless pomme frites for only $9.99! My favorite are the the Provencal or the Moutarde (with mustard and smoked bacon) MMMMMMMMM! ! The best part is washing it all down with a lovely (and affordable) French red, and sopping up the white-wine and butter sauce with the incredible french baguette and creamy butter!
Oh my! Good thing I don't eat here as often as I crave it, or I'd be 20 lbs overweight! haha!

They also have this amazing Wine-dinner every month, with a 5 course prix-fixe menu and 5 different glasses of French wine with each course for only $35 dollars. This is a regular girls-night out event for my group!

Le Central, le magnifique! Truly a Denver gem.

I keep trying and each time my experience is worse than the last. We had the Julie Child special. The asparagus appetizer was off tasting with bits of the stem, probably the dregs of another asparagus dish served 2+ weeks ago. Learn how to cook!
The post entree salad was a big dish of only lettuce with a mustard dressing. Boring and not worth eating!
The decor is cute but hasn't been updated for years and the patio chairs are downright uncomfortable.
I resolve to never go back.
Also I parked in the lot out back, stuffed in my $5 payment and returned to my car 2 hours later with a ticket insisting on a $40 fine. DO NOT PARK THERE.
ITS A SCAM!

Words cannot describe my disappointment, where have all the decent French trained chef's gone in Denver? Well, I can tell you they are not working here! I felt like it was 1982, the food reminded me of Regan. At first I was going to eat at that Fernch Bistro on 17th and Clarkson, but to my dismay it closed, so where else can I get a French food? Le Central. Not going make that mistake again.

I "re-tried" this restaurant during 5280 week. Hadn't eaten at it in almost 25 yrs as I do not work downtown any longer. After the absolutely creative, tasty and well-priced meal I had during 5280, it most certainly will not be 25 yrs before I eat there again. It is now back on my favorite restaurant list and will eat there often. The quality of the food was outstanding, service was excellent, very authentic French food. I was just recently driving all over France eating in small family restaurants and the quality of Le Central rivaled the best of them.

My first trip to le central was last week. I went there with my two young kids. I was a little leery, since I had never been there, but it worked out just fine. We got there at about 5:15, and the place was pretty empty. I ordered some wine that the server recommended. It was wonderful. I ordered a four-course meal, with mussles, salad, lamb and dessert. The mussels where superb, as was the salad. The lamb was wonderful, perfectly cooked. My wife ordered a steak, which also came out perfectly cooked, and was equally great. The only downside is that my daughter ordered chicken breast from the kids menu, which wasn't very good.

All in all, a great meal. I'll be back for sure.

Quaint space but the food was less than expected. I ordered the mussels because they were recommended by the bartender..."That's what we're known for." When they arrived at my table, they looked good, but tasty they were not. Many of the mussels were very small and closed. A lot of the mussels had broken shells & grainy as well and they were not flavorful, just bland. The fries were listed as "unlimited" on the menu but the server never bothered to ask if more fries were needed with only a few left on my plate. For dessert, I had the apple tart tatin, which was disappointing as well. It tasted like an uncooked piece of dough with a whole uncut poached apple on top & a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Next time I go out for french bistro, I will definitely spend an extra dollar or two & go to Bistro Vendome.

My boyfriend and I went out to Le Central last night and after our experience, we will NOT be back! Out waitress was very friendly and the wine that we had was wonderful; however, the food was less than desirable. We order the escargot on brioche with a pernod sauce. The dish lacked salt and pernod. Being that it was my boyfriends first time eating escargot, I am ashamed that this was his first experience with it. The chacuterie plate with pates and meats only had one pate that was palatable and the rest were mystery meats! Pretty bad when you have no idea what you are eating! Worst of all were the entrees! I ordered the cassoulet, which is a dish that is supposed to be a bean stew or casserole. Well, out came a dish with about 2 lbs of navy beans, a two pieces of nondescript meat on top. I told my boyfriend that I fely like I was eating a caveman's stew because even with a sharp knife, I was unable to eat the meat. The waitress was gracious enough to take the dish off of the bill but definitely not what I had in mind. Spend the extra 20 bucks and go to Bistro Vendome if you want a delicious french meal!

Wow! Le Central is wonderful; it is my go to for date night, a night out with friends or when visitors come to town. They never disappoint. Their staff is friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and accommodating. The service is always great. The food impresses equally well. It is consistently delicious, never have I had something I didn't enjoy. The Moules Frites are by far the best in town! The menu changes often, so there is always something new to try alongside old favorites. Overall the restaurant is a delight: wonderful staff, amazing food and affordable prices. Great combination!

Le Central is a hidden gem in Denver. It is a quaint establishment with a nice, intimate atmosphere and an informed, friendly staff. The Moules Frites (bucket of mussels, served with bottomless french fries) are tender, flavorful, and delicious. There menu changes very often, but so far, I've had a rabbit dish and a lamb dish; both were excellent. They also have an extensive wine list. Le Central is a great place to bring a date or a friend

Brought our dinner group here, they did a fantastic job! All of our orders were correct, food came out promptly and all was delicious! We had a group of 10 people - and everything went smoothly. They have a great selection of wines and the price point on their fantastic food is amazing. I recommend this place to anyone who wants great French food without the snooty attitude or elitist prices! Enjoy!

I have dined at this place many times over the last 3 months, but made the unfortunate mistake of phoning to ask for information on the evening's specials. The a$$hole that answered the phone was quite LESS that interested in providing the information, quipping some snide remark that the specials change every day so everything is special. I hate that this little twit has ruined what was otherwise a great place to dine. Beware to all: don't waste your time or effort calling to inquire information - you'll find yourself highly disappointed. It's really quite a shame since I used to enjoy this place, but will find it more than difficult to ever return thanks to the party on the other end of the phone.

What am I talking about? Well, for those who didn?t take three years of French in high school with Ma Souer Margaritte, let me translate: ?It?s true; Le Central really is affordable French food.?

On February 17th the well-known band of cultured Denverites known as the Denver Brunch Club (DBC) graced the presence of Le Central in Denver?s quirky Capitol Hill neighborhood. Le Central?s menu caters to those looking for an authentic French meal at an almost unreasonably inexpensive price.

The spaciousness of the restaurant is not what one would expect from the outside of the building as the various colored stuccoed houses resemble a crammed French village that borders the country?s southern tip. A wait of only 15 minutes accompanied our group of 10 coffee-deprived/hungover troopers. Once seated we were greeted by an amiable bearded fellow who supplied us with much-needed ice water and weak coffee-flavored water, which was far from the traditional overpowering French roast one would anticipate.

Echoes of a disgruntled French waitress rang out as she auctioned off food, which added to the intended French ambiance. Who knew that ?sardou,? a word referring to an egg dish, could be said like an insult! A cacophony of food including omelets, pain perdu, crepes, and benedicts was set out before us, and to the adventurous eaters who say it?s not possible to order fish in a landlocked state, I dare you to order the salmon omelet. Smoked to perfection and loaded with cheese, this dish was there to please.

Overall, the Denver Brunch Club highly recommends Le Central to the masses. It is sure to please anyone looking for a quick, affordable meal packed with atmosphere and the occasional French character. But, don?t count on curing that hangover with strong coffee- it ain?t gonna happen here.

I went to Le Central last night with a few girlfriends. We sat on their patio and all endulged on their Three Course Lobster Menu for $25.00. You get a choice of Mediterranean Fish Soup or Three Cheese Plate with salad, choice of Half of One Maine Lobster prepared one of four ways and choice of Chef's Selection of Dessert. The meal was delicious and the lobster was extremely fresh; in addition to the great dinner the server was attentative, friendly, handsome and French. He suggested that we try a Champagne Cocktail called the French Kiss, when he made this suggestion he even blushed!!!

I have also heard that their Weekend Brunch is a great time to visit Le Central, they serve $2.00 house Champagne and Mimosas on Saturday, where can you wrong with that.

Have been to Le Central several times since moving from California five years ago. It keeps getting better and better. The cuisine has improved gravely since my first visit, I actually had the opportunity to meet one of the French chefs, Bertrand over the weekend, he was friendly and passionate about bringing his wordly experiences to Denver.

The service staff was exceptional, I never once had to ask for anything, the server, I believe her name was Celine, was extremely attentive and cute, was able to connect with everyone at the table. I would recommend anyone visit Le Central if you are looking for fresh food, a menu that changes regularly, a wine list that is not only varied and inexpensive, but a staff that is not afraid to make suggestions in a friendly price range (what a breath of fresh air, I know you have had servers that will never make a recommendation under $50.00, but a wine recommendation for a delicious bottle of Paulliac for $26.00).

Le Central is a piece of Provence in Denver, everytime I visit I wish I could have an 8 course dinner paired with wines for every course.

Pros: Fresh Food and Consistent, Friendly Service

Cons: Menu Changes, might not have what you had last time

.

I had heard many positive things about Le Central, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to go there. Unfortunately, it was far below what I had expected it to be.
We made a reservation and were seated promptly, but it took at least 20 minutes for the waiter to come to our table. In fact, service was at a consistently slooooowww pace. The service was far below what I expected. Our waiter spilled a whole pitcher of water on our table and refused to clean it up. Now I could understand bad service if the restaurant was busy, but it was nearly empty that day.
The food though, was vile. Every dish tasted somewhat bland and forced, like the chefs gave up making it halfway through the preparation. We ordered a crepe stuffed with white fish and salmon, but we instead received an omelette stuffed with sub-par and odd tasting fish. The mussels were also disgusting. Their was something terribly wrong with them. They tasted like what I would imagine the floor of the warthog cages at the Denver Zoo taste like. The mussels were accompanied with some of the saddest excuses for frites that I have ever seen, soggy with out any hint of crispness.
On the plus side, Le Central is decently priced and is in a great location. But the food and service can't possibly make up for anything else. I wouldn't return here unless drastic changes were made.

WOW,
This place has it all. First of all the environment makes you feel like you are back in France. They even have some French staff imported in!! The food was spectacular, and it wasn't very expensive. This is a true French country experience!

We hosted a wedding reception for 90 guests at Le Central Restaurant in July 2007. Even with that many guests, the restaurant provided an intimate French atmosphere. During the year of planning, the management offered many good suggestions, which allowed us to stay within our budget and still provided a first-rate event. We would like to compliment the entire management and staff for making it a very successful evening. The menu selections and quality of food and wine were excellent, drawing rave reviews from the guests. The servers were very friendly, attentive, and responsive. The decorated patio become a gathering place for casual conversation and dancing after dinner. Le Central provided an unusual and memorable location for our daughter's wedding reception.

What is going on here? Last two times I have been in for lunch (the only time I go) it's been no good. I thought the second to last time I was there was a fluke, because before it's been great, spot on.... But this is the second lunch in a row I have been disappointed. Flavorless, the kitchen has lost it's salt shakers, thank god they have some on the table...but even that doesn't save the dish. Coq Au Vin had no salt, no bacon, no flavor, menu discription said bacon, mushrooms, and mirepoix- none of these were present in the dish BUT lots of mirepoix. Really it tasted like hospital/nursing home food. Flavorless serious. We also had the Mussels Portugese with "house made chorizo, tomatoes, garlic and fresh cilantro" No no no no Chorizo I don't think so...more like grey mushy pork sausage with NO flavor. Didn't even taste of cliantro- which it was covered in. Sorry Le Cental for such a bad review but there is something going on in your kitchen and it's not a good thing and it's not French. I hope you pull it out becuase really you are a Denver classic.

Oh and one other thing, hostess was rude and acted like we were a burden to seat....server not very friendly either.

I just hosted a fabulous 40+ person bridal brunch at Le Central. The food and atmosphere were perfect for the event. The service was excellent as well. The highlights were the crepes and the cake (YUMMY!). Management and staff took great care of us and the event exceeded the expectations of the bride-to-be and the rest of the guests. The price of the event was extremely reasonable as well. Thanks to Le Central for making it such a special event! I highly recommend hosting an event at this restaurant.

I have been to Le Central four times and it keeps getting worse and worse. The last time I was in for Sunday brunch our 10 minute wait for a table was followed by a 20 minute wait at the table for a drink order. The mussels where overcooked to the point that they were waterlogged and difficult to remove from the shells. Poached eggs were so undercooked that the yolk was cool and the white barely firm on the edge. The "house-made chorizo" was really lean ground pork, no salt no spice just pork. Service was sarcastic and generally disgruntled adding to the choas and disorganization in the dining room. I would go to le Central again only if they paid me to do so.

I'm not sure what all the hype is about with Le Central - the mussels were small and rubbery and the daily fish special was dry, flavorless, and overcooked. The crepes were doughy in the center. We were there for over an hour without having anyone take our dinner order. They have a good, inexpensive wine list but I'm overly unimpressed with the service and the food.

This has been a place for us for many years now. Truthfully at times the service and food can be merely mediocre, but we never really had bad food or service. This is not an upscale restaurant, simply casual, hence ?affordable?. I actually like the casual setting of the restaurant, its perfect for either lunch or dinner, for a date or with family. If you are accustomed to exquisite French food, this place may not be for you. Servers are accommodating and the desserts are simply divine, especially the Creme Brule, yum!

I just love eating at Le Central. The ambience, art and French infusion is fun. Unique and unusual plates. Try the duck salad for starts! It is very romantic and a lovely patio. The wait staff are very knowledgable and helpful. It is a great special evening. Affordable lunches too! What's not to like? I highly recommend this restaurant. I'm a regular, live nearby and love the place. Take your wife and give her a titillating night! Leave room for dessert.

I came here for a late Saturday brunch with a group of girlfriends. The mussels were fantastic and very tasty-- a very good price too. I had been craving the mussels before i even got there and wasn't disappointed. The mimosas are priced right too. The service was a little slow, especially given the late hour of our brunch the restaurant wasn't full. But i've yet to experience a quick dining experience at Le Central. Don't come here if you're in a hurry. But if you want nice romantic ambience and good food, this is the place to come to.

Sunday the 3rd, six friends and I went here and we had one of the worst dining experiences. Food was terrible, service was painfully slow, and we were misled. We were told foie gras would be a large portion accompanying the chicken and truffles. Instead, we were brought white rice that was "infused," with foie gras. The truffles were microscopic and had no flavor whatsoevery. Everyone had rice with thier dishes for a filler and two of us had severly undercooked Mahi Mahi. Really, the only satisfactory foods were the mussels and French fries. The waitress left our plates sitting there and it took us over 3 hours to dine because of how slow she was. Rice with all seven entrees at a French restaurant? A three course meal that takes 3 hours?? Le Central is too unpredictable with thier quality and I don't recommend it.

I have been dining at Le Central for a hundred years. My experiences have been on a swinging pendulum; sometimes the service is good and the food is mediocre, or the food is good and the service is mediocre. Last week I was surprised to find that nothing was redeeming. I called for a reservation. The hostest asked me what time I'd prefer. I asked for 7:30. She asked, "How about 8?" Why ask for a preference, if you cannot accomodate?! After we arrived, we still had to wait for a table...the Jerry Seinfeld episode was definately on my mind. My husband and I have enjoyed the mussles in the past, and were actually craving them (thus the visit). Service was slow due to the crowd, which is understandble. However, the mussles were obviously steamed in water, with the various sauces poured over afterwards. There was next to no flavor. Besides which, a majority of them were either closed, or had enough sand in them to choke on. And...what happened to "the AFFORDABLE French restaurant"? I was shocked at the price changes. It will definately be awhile before I am willing to try it again!

Well, we've been several times. We've had good food & not so good food. Overall I would recommend going. But, keep in mind this is southern french food, not americanized french food. It may not be exactly what you are use to... it is very casual, homey, comrfort type southern french food... not the nouvelle California style cuisine so many Americans believe is french. And for the reviewer who said wine is overpriced, wrong! Wine here is very affordable. If you are familiar with French labels at all take a few minutes to look the list over, there are some great finds. As for the famous mussels, here's my advice on them... I'm orignally from Maine and can tell you what all coastal dwellers know & those in land locked states seem to forget....Shellfish is seasonal, if you want good shellfish order it in season, not out.

I have not dined at this restaurant for many years the last time was in 1999. The mussels back then were perfect. This time they lacked flavor. Usually I like to dip the bread and fries in the garlic-rich broth, but this time the broth tasted very bland.

Our white wine came out to the table late we were already finished with the first course when it arrived and it was warm. When I told the waitress she actually argued with me about how I just didnt know about wine. This is very sad and embarrassing for her and the restaurant. By the time we finished the last glass the wine was finally cold enough. We did not bother to order another.

The house salad barely had enough dressing to taste. I like French vinaigrette with the mustard zing, but this lacked any of the usual characteristics found in a well-made salad.

We ordered an assortment of desserts and most were very good. However, you must know that the meringue dish with blueberries and creme anglais seemed quite like an unfinished piece of work. The meringue was actually raw, and I am not wrong when I say this. I can whip up an excellent buttercream and I know raw egg white and I know cooked egg whites and these were raw.

Yes... brunch is nice here. We usualy go in a group of 8 to 10 and they are very accommodating. The whole group agrees the food is great at brunch. I like dinner as well, the specials, are generally very special. Watch for the Wild Boar, its fantastic how ever they choose to prepare it. The last few visits for mussels however, have been a dissapointment. Twice in a row, they were gritty .... not good ! Food Snob loves the egg dishes on Sunday morn.

Le Central has provided good, standard French food for years. It is not overly special, but is something you can count on. I went recently after a hiatus and found it to be more or less the same as always, however I've noticed something on my last 2-3 visits; the quailty of the mussels has diminished substantially (though the fries are still spectacular). I have this message for diners; they aren't what they were. I have this message for Le Central, if they're not top quality, please don't serve them. It's such a disappointment as I love mussels, and while I realize we're in Colorado, it's not rocket science to get good, quality shellfish here. So please find a new source! (But keep everything else the same - kudos on your reliable dinner menu).

I have only ever eaten brunch at Le Central, so I can not speak for the lunch/dinner selection, but I absolutely love going to Le Central! The tables are crowded in, but that doesn't bother me too much, I think it is quaint. Try to get a table on the patio! Everything I have ever ordered has been delicious and a great deal. My favorite is the chicken crepe ( I think it is called Crepes Poullet, pardon my French!), it has a light curry sauce that I could eat every day! The goat cheese appetizer is wonderful as well, and serves 4 people. The service is efficient, not the friendliest, but I suppose that is the French way, from what I have heard (I have never had an issue with the staff). If you go on Sunday, be sure the make reservations for brunch, it fills up! On the upside of going on Sunday, parking is free and a lot more plentiful...

It was recommended that I try this place by one of my friends; apparently the mussles were great. I tried them and I was quite disappointed. They had decent flavor, but they were small and very gritty; like they weren't washed properly. It ruins the whole smooth taste of a mussle if it has grit. I also tried the lamb and it had gristle and was quite chewy. Once again, nice flavor, but they just didn't perfect the dish as I had hoped.
They have an extensive wine collection, but as always it is well overpriced. Our waitress actually tried to add an extra bottle onto our bill. We didn't notice at the time and paid the entire thing. When we did notice on our way to the car we went back and tried to get it rectified. The manager took over 45 minutes to refund the money back on to our credit card. All we got for all out inconvenience was a "sorry."
As many others have mentioned; the food is okay, but the service is very sub par. I actually wrote a letter to the owner querying him about our experience and I have not heard back from him. It has been over 4 months.
I will never go back to Le Central and I recommend to my friends to avoid the experience too.

Le Central calls themselves the "affordable French restaurant" but, caveat emptor, you get what you pay for. Based on word of mouth, I couldn't wait for my first taste of what I had been assured would be "amazing." Alas, even at Le Central's modest prices, I was so disappointed: undercooked rice in a paella studded with luke-warm shrimp that obviously been cooked hours earlier, greens over-dressed in a cloying, big box store balsamic, a soggy tarte tatin... Being fair, I went back a few more times and, after about six tries, the best I can say is that the food never elevated itself above cruiseship fare. Soupe de poissons was the density and texture of baby food, garlic sausage had no hint of garlic, pates and rillets tasted of the refridgerator, lamb racks were overdone... all the symptoms of mediocrity that make even the low prices seem unfair.

Just went for dinner on a Sunday night and it was wonderful! A great place for a date or to take your parents when they're in town. Food was great and SUCH a deal! We had 2 appetizers, two soups, three entrees, two desserts, and two drinks for under $90! Service was adequate, no complaints. What a great find, will surely be going back and taking my friends.
