I moved to Denver earlier this summer and have been so pleased with St. James. The community is super friendly, there's an adoration chapel that's open most of the week. I love listening to Fr. Felix's homilies. They totally inspire me

Will criticizing others help me on my journey towards eternal beatitude?
Will judging others help me on my journey towards eternal beatitude?
Will my concentrating on the sins of others help me on my journey towards eternal beatitude?
Will my not recognizing that I am a sinner help me on my journey towards ethernal beatitude?
Will hearing that I am a sinner help me on my journey towards eternal beatitude?
Will my complaining about being pushed aside, ignored and made to feel like a second class citizen help me on my journey towards eternal beatitude?
If I am shunned and alienated, can great good come of this?
If I am persecuted, can great good come of this?
Is Jesus Christ, He who is innocent, chastized, put down, ridiculed, treated as a second or third class citizen ignored?
Is the way Jesus is treated too good for me?

I am not in the Neocatechumenal Way, and never have I felt left out or pressured to join it. I don't know where people are getting that.

Being a Christian, a follower of Christ is a tough thing, and we need to know this, or else we will be the worst of hypocrites. Father Felix preaches a fiery homily, but if you want to feel good about everything no matter what is actually happening, watch Good Morning America or join a golf club.

As unfortunate as it is, it seems to me that the mixed reviews are due to people's political ideologies (i.e. liberal democrats) being challenged by what our faith, and Father Felix teach.

The neighborhood of St. James, seems to be a mixture of upper class liberals and Hispanics, thus the inherent conflict.

If you are a liberal and are orthodox, you will have no problem at St. James, for no party politics are preached. If you are a social liberal, then you probably won't like it, because Father Felix makes no bones about the absolute need to fight the moral corruption that goes along with modern American liberalism.

I have attended Mass at St. James three times as a visitor, and I am always impressed with Fr. Felix. He speaks the teachings of our faith strongly but without being agressive. Teaching the faith is his job. How could anyone object to hearing Catholic teaching at a Catholic church? Personally, I have found him to be warm and friendly, concerened for the poor and disadvantaged, and loving towards his parishioners. I don't understand any of the objections below nor do I find them to be accurate.

I really love the school and church. I read these comments and have no idea where the negative reviews are coming from. I do not belong to the NC community but have always felt like I belong to the St James community. The negative reviews are very contrary to anything I have seen at the church and school.

The pastor (Fr. Felix) is truly a man of God and has been there for me during my time of need and tragedy. He is compassionate and he is also been very helpful to my spiritual growth. His sermons are moving and actually guide me to a better life.

The school has been terrific for my son, he is learning at rates I have never seen before, he has a strong core of friends and there seems to be little of the issues you see at all schools such as teasing and bullying.

Please check out the church and school for yourself and soon you will find that this is a strong caring community.

We had (and I stress "had") been members of the Parish for nearly 10 years. Our daughter has been in the school for 4 years. We have left. We found a parish where the sermons are uplifting, not Hell fire and brimstone. Where the priest speaks to our hearts, where love and christian compassion are important. I don't think the pulpit is the place to discuss the evils of the activities associated with east Colfax when the audience is people made up of many in their late 60's or 70's (who aren't involved in such), or with young children in attendance. Yes, those should be condemned but the venue should be appropriate. Small children should not be learning the evils of east Colfax in church. If Father Felix wants to make these issues a personal priority, then let him go and preach on the street, at a half way house or a substance abuse program. But spare our children's ears and make the sermons relevant to those of the parish. As to the school, it had been a nurturing, religious and educationally sound institution. A new principle came this year, Ms. Hoval and with in short order Staff was leaving or was fired. Good people who had never had a negative job review. It is interesting that she is unable to see that the cause is herself. Dictatorial, unwilling to listen to the experience of the staff that was there and unable to take constructive criticism. Talking with other parents and the staff that left due to her, there is a common thread that she lies to justify her means. Not a good trait in a Catholic school. Her 4 new hires have a total of 1 prior year of experience amongst them. None has a teaching degree! One of those she has had to let go already. Rather telling of her managerial ability. I can not recommend this parish and school to any one. For your children's sake, stay away!

Pros: easy to get to

Cons: Father Felix and Carol Hoval

I find it very odd that someone would write a review (This is My Home) criticizing people for doing exactly what they are doing - writing an analysis of how they perceive their parish. This site is not just for those who have only 'positive' things to say about the 'product' advertised, hence the ability to 'rate' the product from one to five stars. It is great that he/she loves their parish and its pastor, and they have every right to let people know their opinion, just like those of us who also are long time parishioners and once considered St. James as their home as well, have the right to voice our concerns.
"THIS IS MY HOME" states that he/she does not believe that Fr. Felix is trying to push the Neocatechumenal Way on his parish. That is one opinion. One can love their parish just as much as the reviewer and still have a difference of opinion. There are many, including my family, who feel as if this is not the case. I know of dozens of faithful parishioners who have indeed tried to speak to Fr. Felix, to have their concerns heard, but were dealt with disrespectfully and were then treated as 'the enemy'. I have no doubt that those who support THE WAY and Father Felix are treated respectfully. That is exactly the point.
While I know nothing about the origin of the mentioned saveyourparish website, it does seem plausible that it was created because there were those who felt as if they had no voice and wanted to be heard. I recently received a flyer in the mail about the website and so I do not understand why "THIS IS MY HOME" called its existence "secretive" as I believe all parishioners received this information. The flyer stated that if people are happy with the direction of the parish and Father Felix's pastoral leadership then they should just continue on worshiping as before, however, if you find his manner and his focus on THE WAY troubling, then there is an avenue provided for you. This is not 'middle school' philosophy. This is a thoughtful and organized response which I imagined was born from frustration, not malice.
As for 'praying' for our parish, I pray for our congregation AND Father Felix every day, that does not mean I should sit back and ignore injustice when I see it. It also does not mean I should not stand by and watch what was once a vibrant and vocal community be bullied into silence.

It has been interesting to not only read the reviews on here but also on the "save your parish" webpage recommended in one of the reviews. I feel like I'm in a completely different parish than most of those who have posted on here. I am not someone who has just come to St. James, I am a long time parishioner and grew up in this parish. I could not imagine going anywhere else. I am sorry that some of my fellow parishioners have had bad experiences in this parish, it is very unfortunate. I love this parish and our pastor, Father Felix. He is a very warm and caring priest, and will do anything for anyone. He is very passionate and strong in his faith which is very refreshing and inspiring. His homilies are wonderful every Mass he celebrates and he is the BEST confessor I have ever had. He has helped me grow stronger in my faith and take it more seriously. For that I am thankful! He has brought a number of great things to St. James (Holy Hour, Morning Prayer, and Adoration every morning Mon-Sat, 24-hour Adoration, more adult faith formation lectures/classes and an upcoming weekend devoted to celebrating the life of our patron, St. James the Less). I do not believe he is trying to destroy this parish or turn it into nothing but "Neocats". The Neocatechumenal Way is something people have chosen to do because they feel called to do so. That is fine, just as it is fine for those of us who have not felt called to it. It is a shame that people have to resort to creating secret websites to bring down a priest and parish. I can't say I've heard anyone actually speak of the "save your parish" page, I came across it by accident on here. They say the Way is very secretive, but what do they think that website is? It is a very "middle school" tactic to pull. I can understand that you want your voice heard, that is not an unreasonable request, but try doing it in a respectful and mature way. Try praying for our parish instead of trying to destroy it!

Pros: Father Felix, Religious Education Program, Daily Holy Hour/Mass, Ambience of the Church

Cons: The politics played by a few

I have had my children in St. James for several years. I was happy with their education up until this year. Currently there are unqualified (no teaching ceritificates) teachers. I transfered them out to a new public school. Sadly my children are now behind the others. I know they will catch up because they are smart kids. I could never recommend this school for anyone.

I was an active member of St. James community for many years. I have struggled through the last two years to keep my faith under Father's Felix's reign. Unfortunately I had to change churches as I could no longer subject myself and my family to Father's rantings every week. It was a difficult decision but I felt that to keep my family's faith intact I had to leave. My children need to know that God is loving and merciful not a cruel king.

Pros: The old and caring St. James

Cons: Fr. Felix and the WAY

I recently moved into the area and started attending St. James and another church which I will not name since I don't want this to be about comparing priests. I can only say that I am glad that we as Catholics have choices as to churches. While I have not been here long, I can say that my interactions with Fr. Felix were very negative. He gives you the feeling that if you are not married and/or do not have children that there is no room for you in his church (which of course is not his church, but the Lord's). Even his sermons are constantly referring to how one should act towards one husband/wife and children. Does he not realize that there are tens of thousands of Catholics in this country, middle-aged, who through no fault of their own are not married and/or do not have children. Is God's word only for those who are actively procreating.? It gives one a creepy feeling that he is only looking for conscripts to his Neocat community (of which I am just beginning to learn about). I want to be part of a community, not a cult. Once again I am glad we have choices and while St. James is closer to my house I have decided to be a member of an alternatie parish.

Does anyone else notice how the positive reviews in this blog appear to be scripted and contrived? There is one that sounds like a paid announcement, another that sounds like it was one of Fr. Felix?s sermons. While a member of the parish I am staying with the community despite Fr. Felix and his many flaws. I have been here long enough to know that priests come and go, God stays. To the tried and true parishoners that have given their heart and soul to their community and most importantly their God, don't despair, this too will end. For those new to the area and who don't want to join a damaged community, look elsewhere.

I could not possibly rate St. James Parish more highly. My experiences have been absolutely wonderful, especially with Father Felix, who is wholeheartedly devoted to ministering to all of the needs of all his parishioners. Everything that he does is done with the utmost respect and reverence and he takes much care to uphold the sanctity of the Liturgy. His homilies are some of the most profound and beautiful that I have ever heard, and always seem to strike a chord in my heart. He is a marvelous confessor as well - never judgmental, but always sure to emphasize the love of Christ and the importance of full participation in the Sacraments. His advice is unlike any other I have received and he always seems to make as much time as necessary to help me with any struggles that I am having.

We have been parishoners for 2 years now and moved to Denver from the east coast. We go to St James _because_ of Father Medina. I feel that he is a breathe of fresh air in a parish that otherwise would be uninspiring. I love his sermons and I love going to church to reflect on my life and how I relate to others. Our children do not attend the school so we have no inside knowledge of the "firings" that happened last December. They do however attend CCD classes on Thursdays and we love that they have friends outside of their regular school. The parents who are teachers at CCD have always been supportive and welcoming. We have always been greated with warmth and smiles.

In all honesty, I don't see what the other reviews are talking about. It is easy to make broad strokes of generalizations without mentioning specifics to dissuade others away from this church. In regards to the accusations of the Neocatechumenal Way- well, I think that argument should be made at a higher level than at our local parish since the NC Way has just recently been approved by Pope Benedict. My recommendation to all considering joining the parish is to go to a mass and make the judgment for yourselves.

A friend of mine that is a monk once told me that neocats are either loved or hated. From the reviews this is correct. It's interesting to see that most the reviewers that 'love' the parish and pastor have only been members of the parish for a 'few years'. Yet the reviewers that are not recommending the church have been parishioners for several years! I personally have been a parishioner for over 30 years and am an alum of the school. I cannot believe how Felix has been able to ruin the community in such a short time!

The Truth will set you free + I am a sinner + and I don't mind hearing that fact in my Church ~ because the truth is that I am forgiven. Nothing that I could ever do will save me ~ only MY LORD JESUS CHRIST. I have never loved being Catholic more than I do in these 'struggling' times. I profess Jesus as my Lord and my Savior -- He is the spouse I have longed for all of my life. Our current Priest has taught me and my family about ourselves and our FAITH. Fr. teaches us how to live in Love with one another, in spite of my ideas about how things should be! My Parish of St. James is a safe, warm house of God where all are welcome. I love it here! I am so grateful to God for our "on fire for the Lord" Priest. He teaches with Authority and he is Obedient. Some of my brothers and sisters at St. James begin the day with Fr. Felix in MORNING PRAYER ~ starting at 7:00 a.m. This includes ADORATION of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. There is usually an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this daily (M - F) Holy Hour. Please join us! Adoration continues through the day. Come stay an hour with the Lord! It will change you. With Lent here, our Friday night Fish Frys (5-7) have resumed, and are made possible by the devoted Knights of Columbus chapter at St. James. You will see young and old ~ mixing and enjoying the food and fellowship. Stations of the cross follow at 7:15 pm. St. James has many beautiful ministries for Gods people to jump in with both feet and dirty their hands a little ~ or rub elbows with each other ~ becoming even more a part of the community ~ not 'apart from'. Supporting the School is another opportunity to get involved and make new friends. The devil is pleased with ill will, unhappiness and division. I ask myself on a daily basis ~ 'who will I serve today'. Oh Lord I lift up my eyes, my thoughts, my heart and my hands to YOU ~ Thy Will be done. + And a big thank You for Your servant ~ our Priest ~ + Amen

Pros: Faithful Servants

Cons: I have no children to send to school !

.

St James has been a beautiful community for my family. We are a non traditional family (single parent) and have been welcomed with open arms. In the last few years I have met many people in the parish and work in some of the ministries. This is a caring and loving community with a wonderful school that fits all of my children. From pre-school to 8th grade the children grow in faith and academics at a rapid pace. The children are challenged in there academics to be much above their grade level. My children have grown from being one grade behind to being one ahead. If I have any concerns Father Felix and Carol Hovell address them in an appropriate manor. This is a parish and school that has touched my heart. I could not see my family being happier anywhere else!

I too, will be sending back my church envelopes when next received as I have watched a caring and giving community slowly become a culture of fear. Fear of voicing one's concerns, fear of questioning, fear of confessing bad acts and have them met with judgment and retribution, not by God, but by Father Felix, the recently appointed pastor of St. James. From my biblical understanding, Jesus personified the axiom "the means justify the end", but Father Felix believes and preaches the opposite, that whatever one must do to attain 'salvation', whether it be to slander, to lie, to deceive, is justified. I know that priests are human, and like the rest of us, are tempted by sin and commit sinful acts, but when I see a 'man of God' treating the weak and disempowered with such a lack of humility and at times with complete disdain, it is hard for me to witness in silence. Since there is no room in Father Felix?s parish for those who believe in God AND humanity, I will be moving on.

Pros: Congregation

Cons: Father Felix

Our family is leaving St. James and enrolling in a new parish. We are tired of leaving Mass with a headache from Father Felix's "enthusiasm". He needs to tone down his voice and deliver God's message in a kindly fashion. A church is a community not a dictatorship.

Pros: Community (what is left)

Cons: Priest/Pastor

I read some of the other reviews and I am astonished by what was said. We have been attending this church for a couple of years. We were members of another great Catholic church, but switched to St James because of the amazing pastor. Father Felix homilies are so inspiring. He is so on fire for Christ. He goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome. The music at the 10:00 mass is fabulous....more contemporary in style. Since we have joined, the church has grown in numbers dramatically. And, the school is equally fabulous. My daughter just started in the preschool and the environment is wonderful. My encounters with the principal have been overwhelmingly positive. I would highly recommend St James.

The St. James school and church is going through a complete metamorophis. Be very wary for considering this community as it is now. There seems to be no consideration for the past traditions and past dedication of the families and students. We are feeling very unwelcome and uncomfortable in the school and church at this time.

Our beloved church and school are being destroyed by Fr Felix and Carol Hovell. We have been in this loving community for 13 years until recently. Fr Felix and Carol Hovell have pitted parent against parent and parishioner against parishioner with their neocat teachings. Noone knows who they can trust. Which is sad this is suppose to be a catholic church. No catholic will be "saved" if you are not with the neocat community. If you are not catholic then you have no hope. Is this what we want our children being taught. I certainly hope not. The community needs to stand up and take action. So far all of our pleas to the bishop have fallen on deaf ears so we must do it ourselves. St James was once a caring loving community. It was that way for over a 100 years. It's been only since Fr Felix has taken over (in the past 2 or 3years) that it has been become an unchristian community.

My family WAS members of St. James for 20 years. It was a loving community. Then Father Felix and Carol Hovell (princpal) came. Now it is a lying, back stabbing, uncristian community. Anyone who has been in the community for years has been forced out. They only except the people who believe in "the way--neocats". They seem friendly until they find out you are a good catholic then you are forced out. Catholics are not allowed!!!!! If you like being lied to and treated like dirt then this is the church and school for you. The school is also falling apart. They are only teaching their religion which is more like a cult then a religion. Core subjects have been cut drastically...the kids are NOT getting enough reading and writting. The math and science teacher is not qualified to teach those subjects. Be advised the school is not the place to send your kids. They only got the 1 star rating because you have to. Be advised go to any other catholic church in the area. There are plenty of good churches. This is NOT one of them!!!!

I was a St. James Parishioner for YEARS, my daughter went to school there for four years, until this year. I was so enamored by the community and the parish, until Fr. Felix. I even adored Fr. Felix for a while. My how things have changed. I left due to the lack of caring from the Pastor and the Parish "professionals".

We loved our school and the teachers, but we are so glad we have left due to the "Neocat" overhaul. I was never judged or lectured at any other parish. Mass simply became a "lecture" with Eucharist. That is just WRONG. The thing that really hurts in this situation is "The Priests and Principals come and go, but the community remains". We have joined another Parish and unfortunately our daughter no longer attends Catholic School. We LOVE our new Parish as the masses are SO uplifting and you leave singing in your heart. Just as mass was intended! I wish all of my friends the very best of luck under the current St. James Parish/School advisors, however, I would not recommend this parish or school to anyone.

If there were a zero star rating availiable I would use it. My beloved Parish and School are "circling the drain". The unchristian like treatment of anyone who dares to question the Pastor or Principal is appalling. The constant preaching from the pulpit of how we are all sinners and are simply not capable of being good contributing members of society, caring neighbors, responsible employees, loving wifes, husbands, parents, or children is demoralizing. There is such an emphasis on the harsh extreme teachings of the Neocatechumenal Way that we no longer hear of social justice issues or are guided by example on acting in a Christ-like manner. We are not allowed to ask questions or offer opinions but rather are encouraged to follow like sheep. Ask yourself the simple question, "What would Jesus do?". I suggest that Jesus would most certainly not act with the utter lack of compassion and disrepect to others that our Pastor and Principal have demonstrated. I for one must seek my spiritual guidance elsewhere, 'lest my spirit be broken altogether.

Our family loves this church and Father Felix, we can always find something meaningful in his powerful sermons. If you are looking for spiritual fulfillment we recommend St James.

Two EXCELLENT, WELL RESPECTED AND LOVED staff members have been unfairly fired from the 'Catholic' school for helping others (the economy shouldn't discourage us from helping others). Both were fired less then a week before Christmas, is this really the Catholic faith or is this 'The Neocat Way' to treat others? I encourage all St. James Parishioners to donate to these two families in their time of need rather then support 'The Way'!

I encourage all parents to be EXTREMELY VIGILANT of what your children are learning in Religion and not learning in core subjects.

Father Felix is ruining the St. James community! He's turning parishioners against one another because some are starting to believe in 'The Way' while others don't. If you don't believe in 'The Way' then 'you'won't be saved.' He does not welcome challenges or questions about his believes, yet he preaches that you need to open your ears and hearts to those who challenge and push you because they love you. He should take what he preaches to heart. Under his 'leadership' a community that has been around for over 100 years will be destoried in a few years. Members of the community need to stand together and fight for their Church and School! A little advice for the leaders.....The Golden Rule.....Treat others as you want to be treated. You have to respect others before they will respect you...apparently The Way does not teach this rule.

Followers of The Way are not welcome! Felix and his followers need to leave! This is no longer a Catholic, or Christian community! People should not be told to sit down and shut up when they are just asking a question. If parents treat each other this way, how are the children being treated. Thank goodness there are still excellent teachers at least for now unless the principal decides to up and fire more people for no reason! Maybe she'll wait until holy week to fire people this time!

I couldn't agree with the other review of this church more. It has brought me back to the faith of my childhood. My son also goes to St James Catholic School and I have been very impressed. Father Felix is wonderful, he is really there for your spirtual well being and will tell it like it is when that needs to be done. The community is outstanding too, I have been getting to know other parishoners which I had never done in the past parishes in which I belonged. I recommend that you stop by for Mass, even if you haven't been in a long time. The parish is diverse, giving and very friendly.

I am new to the area and attended St. James since it was the closest Catholic church in my house. The Mass was reverent and music at 8:00 mass very good, one of the choir member's voice sounded like "Ariel", the Little Mermaid...it was very peaceful, natural and beautiful. But, it was Fr. Felix's homily that blew me away! He preaches with truth, passion and application for our lives. If you have been turned off by any reason from the faith, or have been away from the church, or are just looking for an inspiring homily, visit any mass that Fr. Felix celebrates! (He does not hold back for daily mass either!)He will speak to your heart and soul, he will challenge you, he welcomes us sinners! He has a gift of preaching!
Not only that, he is one of the best confessors I have ever had too, he speaks to you, unjudgementally with his only goal being to bring you closer to Christ. He is pointing the way to Truth and Life, Give Mass a try with Fr. Felix!
