So they have some pretty great gear, skis and clothing. I'm sorry to say the service is less than stellar and they aren't even open on Saturdays. I know it's some religious reason, but geez, that's when people need it open the most! So now on the service. I'm a nice looking, fit person, they are nice to me. But my overweight friend who grew up in Golden, gets treated like poop there and ignored. What's up with that? Also, they person who works on repairing skis is a weenie. He is scared to work on skis/bindings that he's never seen before. He'll just let the skis sit at the shop until you finally ask several weeks later about the status then to only take them back with no service performed on them. So lame. I don't tell people I buy stuff there because I don't want them to give their money to those jerks.

I've come to expect a certain amount of tough-guy climber attitude from the wanna-be alpinists who staff most gear shops, but Bent Gate's ski staff is the only one that has lied to my face, most likely to avoid doing any actual work for a customer. I went in there to demo some skis they carried that I was considering buying, and in response to my inquiry the jerk who works in the back in the tuning shop tried to tell me that they don't demo skis any longer, despite the fact that there is a giant poster on the wall of the ski shop advertising how great their demo program is, and I could clearly see several dozen demo skis hanging on the rack behind him. When I asked him what he was talking about, he then said that they sometimes demo things, but they are not going to now because they're in "clearance mode," whatever that means. He then rambled on about how it wasn't worth it for me because I couldn't apply the rental fee to the purchase price (something I never even asked about). Even though I was about to walk out at this point, I tried to explain that I just wanted to pay to try out the skis before buying them, which is standard procedure at every ski shop in the country. He then said that would cost $50, which is a figure I'm quite sure he just made up on the spot to get me to leave, since it's double the demo rate of everywhere else on the Front Range. Well, the jerk's attempt to avoid setting up a pair of skis (I assume he wanted to get back to sniffing base cleaner) worked like a charm, since I ended up demoing and buying a perfect pair of skis at the Loveland ski shop, and I paid far less than I would have at Bent Gate, assuming any of the lords of the ski shop would deign to let me test them.

Arrogant, Expensive, Lack of Selection. Skip this gaper range store. Do yourself a favor and goto Wilson Backcountry or Skinny Skis for a real store for your addictions. Repres here are self absorbed lower midwesterners who provides bad advice. If you are a front range midwestern gaper, you will be in good company.

Bent Gate Mountaineering is a great shop and a great resource for the community. The staff is super knowledgeable and even though they are not open on saturdays and sometimes i wish they were, they really do a great job of making sure i get what i need. They are not pushy, and they really know their stuff. They are a small shop, and that means that sometimes you don't get the effeciency that you do in a big place, but everyone goes out of their way to make you feel welcomed. They ask you how your ski day is rather than ask you if you are "looking for anything in particular". Bottom Line, they rock. The community nights are awesome, and you get to hang out with a lot of different people and learn so much.... i just can't stay out of the shop!

These guys are awesome. Every time I come here they treat me right, are friendly and know their stuff. They have a backcountry ski demo program that makes it easy to find the ski that is right for you. Fully awesome

Though the location is not always obvious to the naked eye, once found, this store is like a hidden gem in downtown historic Golden. This store, geared towards mountaineering and other outdoor sports carries very high quality items. The gear can be a bit pricey, but there is variety and quality in all their items. The staff is knowledgable about the equipment as well as good places to put your gear to work. There are also lots of good book resources to help you continue to grow in your sport.

I picked up an AT set-up from here this past winter. I told them what my goals were, or at least what I envisioned doing. They really helped me out get on the right gear, even though I left with gear that was a bit different than what I thought I would get. They even honored a gift cert a day after it expired due to the holidays. Cool place, lots of great euro stuff!

Pros: Quick service, no nonsense

Cons: Parking, odd hours.
