Withholding medicine, these people have NO compassion, no mercy. I have been going to this vet for over a year. My cat has hyperthyroidism and needs her prescription for Methimazole refilled. Aspen Commons Animal Hospital said I have to make an appointment to get the prescription refilled. I explained that we could not afford to make an appointment right now, we simply do not have the money right now. The people at Aspen Commons Animal Hospital did not care.

I explained that we can barely afford the medicine, they do not care. I explained my cat will die without it, they do not care. I asked them for mercy, Aspen Commons Animal Hospital Refused to help.

I am stunned by some of these reviews. I suspect that the disgruntled ex-employees were terminated "for cause" and are lashing out because I can't believe a word of what they have said because it has been so totally opposite to my experience and the experience of the friends that recommended Aspen Commons to be in the first place.

We have taken our family pets here for 14 years. During those years I have been grateful for the expert treatment they have received from Dr James. We have had surgeries, teeth cleaning and two dogs with heart failure.

Yes, they can get busy when an emergency case comes in, but most times I am taken into my appt promptly and I have no complaints.

We also board our pets there several times a year. I am 58 years old and have seen my share of vets over the years. I can attest that Dr James is an excellent surgeon and his devotion to your animals is sincere. He is dedicated and I am so grateful to have found him.

THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE USED DR. BOB JAMES AND STILL HAVE YOUR PETS ALIVE--CONSIDER YOURSELF EXTREMELY LUCKY AND FIND ANOTHER VET, A RESPONSIBLE VET WHILE YOU CAN! To all the rest of the countless clients of Dr. James who have lost their beloved pets at his hands due to his extreme negligence, I am so very sorry. Dr. James is a monster and is not only an alcoholic and suffers from Bi-Polar disorder and refuses to take his medication, he is a barbarian who does not give a darn about animals or his profession. There may have been a time when he was a good vet, but that time has long since passed. Westie Rescue President M Smith is very good friends with this man and continues to use him for the rescued dogs and because of this, most of the wonderful volunteers of the Denver Chapter of Westie Rescue have resigned--myself included! I pray and beg no one else will feel the heart break of losing their beloved pet at his hands. He currently has several liens against his practice for unpaid stock and equipment and several law suits pending-I can give the name of 2 people; due to him killing their dogs with bad medicine/improper treatment. THIS MAN NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN AND I AND OTHERS HE HAS CAUSED DAMAGE TO WILL BE TAKING LEGAL ACTION TO DO JUST THAT! PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE A PART OF IT AS WELL IF YOU HAVE HAD A MISDIAGNOSED ANIMAL OR SUFFERED THE DEATH OF AN ANIMAL DUE TO HIS NEGLIGENCE. WestieFever05@gmail.com

This used to be a good animal hospital, but something has happened in the past few years and now everything is utter chaos. I left Aspen Commons almost 2 years ago after their sub-standard care contributed to the death of a dog who saved my life more than once, and since then I've heard horror stories from other clients. I wouldn't go there now if they paid me, and if you care for your pets, you'll take them somewhere else. I'm sorry to say it as I don't wish Dr. James or his staff any harm, but I have to agree with Troy S. -- this clinic really should be shut down.

I am a former employee of Aspen Commons. I have worked there for aover a year and a half. Let me tell all of you to take your animals some where else. I have seen this so called doctor come to work drunk to perform a euthinasia for a client, try to provied 24hr care for critical animalsand not even bother to show up, and hit clients animals when they dont cooperate with him. He treats his staff like S**T and pays his kennel techs under minimum wage. I honestly think his clinic should be shut down.

Dr James was our vet when we lived in Denver from 1979-1991 and took care of all our pets - our Golden Brandy at the time would stay with Dr James whenever we needed to travel and she lived to be 16+ years old. He is an amazing and caring vet and we have referred our friends who live in Denver to him for many years. The Staff at Aspen Commons has always been a great support and after all these years, we still hear marvelous things about the clinic! Great Job~

Recently I had my dog pass, and I had been seeing Dr. James for the past 9 years. I ended up taking my dog to Animal East, because I was basically pushed from one vet. tech to another, when I really needed to talk to Dr. James himself. I never did hear from him, in the week of my dog getting very ill, being seen by him twice in one week and then @ the end of the week, her passing. I feel like they are just going through the motions and very eager to charge you an arm and a leg for basic exam, and medicine. Would never go back with any other animal. Very sad experience.

I have been going to Aspen Commons for over 15 years Yes, you have to wait a bit for your appointment and, yes, they do tend to be understaffed. However, I have a special needs dog and I have received the best care for her by Dr. James. He always explains the procedures, medications, test results, etc and is always open to any questions that I have.

As a pet owner YOU are responsible to ask questions if you do not understand! I am always present in the room with any procedure on my dog/cat. I have been to the "big box" vets...you never see the same vet twice.

Aspen Commons also had 2 other vets on staff for many years..they left after they gained their experience and started their own practice. Dr. James has had a hard time finding a responsible vet to come into his practice that can be trusted.

Aspen Commons is a wonderful place to take your beloved animals!

While there does seem to be a lot of turn-over in staff at Aspen Commons, I always assumed that there are a lot of interns working there, who move on when their time is up. Bob James is the very best -- the most compassionate veterinarian in my 60-odd years of experience with pets. When it was time for my little sweetheart Missy to make her trip across the Rainbow Bridge, Bob James was so very kind to both of us, and sent me a hand-written note afterward. I suspect some of the negative comments are coming from former employees who couldn't make the grade, or from owners of pets that are unruly and hard to control. I've certainly met a number of them in the waiting room. Their owners are usually rude, too - the kind of people who think it's funny when their big ugly dog sticks his face in my cat's carrier and barks at her, scaring her to death.

My cats are my children, so my veterinarian must be right up there with a pediatrician. After becoming frustrated with the clinic that we'd been going to for years, a friend recommended Aspen Commons. In the year that we've been going there, I've been very impressed with the quality of care. The staff is always pleasant and Dr. James is wonderful!! My older cat suffers persistent allergies, which aren't life threatening when treated, but cause her a great deal of discomfort and a great deal of worry for her mother. But Dr. James has been wonderful when it comes to explaining things to a worried mom and taking care of the nervous kitty. On the other hand, my younger cat just sits and purrs when Dr. James examines him! I feel very comfortable having my children in his care.

... left a long time ago. Brooke was a tender-caring technician with superlative skills. She treated animals and owners with the respect and care that they deserve. It was always a pleasure to bring my pets to the facility while she was there, because she always greeted us with a smile. However, now it just plain sucks!

Please do yourselves a favor and follow the example that she left...
just walk out.

I am an ex employee from Aspen Commons and would like to say that unfortunately that all of the horror stories that have been said on this page are true. Most of the technicians that work there where fired from other hospitals for animal neglect and drug problems. I hate to say that any animal hospital is horrible but this one is not worth the risk Dr. James likes to take in patients that need emergency 24 hour care and unfortunately most of them die he doesn't have enough staff because he doesn't have the money to pay them or the company's that supply to him. He also goes through multiple techs because he doesn't know how to treat his staff morale is very low and your animals don't get the care that they should so BEWARE and even though it may cost more go somewhere else

I agree that the staff is rude and abrupt.I have called with questions on my pets medications and have had to wait two days for answers.I will take action if my animal should have adverse problems due to this "too bust" state of affairs.Dr James is super and I feel he is too rushed.Ryan and Bea are just plain rude and self important people.Bea is rude and every time I speak to her I get the feeling she enjoys giving you a hard time and not relaying messages correctly, causing more lost time and inconvenience.I agree with the first poster that Ryan is a joke.He does actually speak rudely to you on the phone and does I believe think he is the doctor.I do see the revolving door as well.I will see my dog through this current medical delima and the return to my previous vet due to the staff.

I have been going to Aspen C for 20 years with two of my beloved pets. Just because you (the reader) don't agree with something someone wrote doesn't mean it isn't true! However Dr. James would NEVER throw a pet across the room or kill an animal. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY A LIE!

Dr. James is a kind and caring person and vet. My direct experiences with him are good. But he has repeatedly said he's burned out and wants to retire and it is quite obvious his heart is no longer in this. He has lost touch with his everchanging staff (there is a turnover every 2-3 months). They are incompetent and nasty. One of the techs, Ryan is very rough with the animals and gives incorrect advice as if he were the actual vet.

His desk person Bea is the nastiest woman I've run across in a long time. Should NOT be in a sensitive business like this one.

My pet loves Dr. James himself but I am overly stressed with his staff! They once made an appt. for me at 2:30 but put it on the schedule for 4. No apology, just had to wait and wait! After 20 years! One of them has hung up on me several times also when she didn't like what she was hearing. THey also gave me waaaaay too much meds for my pet one time out of negligence and could have killed my pet.

If you can tolerate the current staff James is a great vet. They should be changing soon anyway as it's been a couple of months. The next group will be coming in. Hopefully they will be better rather than worse!

We have just started going to Aspen Commons, as Dr. James was referred by a friend. He is definitely worth the wait, but each time my husband and I have taken our puppy, we have had to wait at least 45 minutes before seeing the vet. It is worth it in my opinion, but it's a shame that I have to carve out half a day to go to the vet.

I have had the pleasure of Dr. James' expertise for 25 years. He has tended to two cats and four dogs over this time. His knowledge is profound; his manner is warm and professional; his treatment of all the animals is completely devoted. All of our friends have been referred to his clinic and have the same high appraisal. Our animals are enthusiastic about visiting Aspen Commons!

I can only assume that anyone who wrote a bad review was, in fact, a disgruntled ex-employee. Veterinarians don't get any better than Dr, James, and I know from personal conversations, that his employees learn a lot from him and appricate his high standards of care and high standards in employees !

I think Dr. James and his staff are some of the best Vets and vet techs that I've met in Denver. They are always caring and compassionate, and very helpful even over the phone. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Dr. James has provided exemplary care, not only for my personal animals, but for many ownerless animals over our 20 year association. The fact is that without his generosity, many dogs would be euthanized for lack of the care that allows them to be rehabilitated and rehomed. All animals at Aspen Commons receive the same level of care, discounted or not.

All Breed Rescue Network and Westie Rescue Network are two of the many rescue organizations that he has helped over the years. Without him and his dedicated staff, we could not continue to do what we do.

This is an unusually gifted diagnostician and skilled surgeon. I am fortunate to have him caring for all my dogs, both personal and rescue.

I'm sorry Larry S., but I've also had some bad experiences at this clinic. And don't assume someone is a coward just b/c they don't identify - there are many reasons in today's world to protect your identity. I'm glad you and your pets have had good experiences. I agree with the 1st poster, they are way understaffed and overloaded. I've noticed a lot of turn over with Vets as well. The last time I took in a pet they did not get back to me on results and did not check in with me as they said they would. I too waited a long time with an appointment. I felt rushed through the appointment. I felt uneasy with the whole process and my pet's diagnosis. I also saw some "rough" treatment of my pet and this was a big concern to me. I will not be going back.

I have to say that I stumbled onto this site when looking for the Aspen Commons site to reccommend to a friend. I reccommend Aspen Commons and Dr. Jame unreservedly.

I was appalled by the distorted and totally off-base comments by "Anonymous" (you sniveling ignorant coward) and Cassandra B. I understand how anyone can feel after losing a pet or not getting the desired result, but blaming Aspen Commons and Dr. James simply is not acceptable. Aside from my sweet wife of 21 years, my animals are the most important other "people" in my life. As their care provider, Dr. James also is a very important -- vital -- part of my life. I have been bringing my babies to Dr. James for more than 20 years. Four of them have passed after very long and healthful lives. Currently I have three dogs (5 years, 2 years, and 8 months) who are under Dr. James very competent and compassionate care. I would not trust them with any other vet, given the choice.

I am thankful and very grateful to have such a well trained, caring and empathetic doctor and staff to care for my most precious family. And I am incensed that there are morons out there who blame others for the cards Nature deals them, or their own mental shortcomings. Einstein said, "God is not malicious. He is merely indifferent." Thank God that He has provided us with caring doctors such as Robert James, who are caring and compassionate, certainly not indifferent.

I have to say that I stumbled onto this site when looking for the Aspen Commons site to reccommend to a friend. I reccommend Aspen Commons and Dr. Jame unreservedly.

We have been taking our 16-year-old cocker spaniel/poodle to Aspen Commons for some time. It was just recently that I realized how unprofessional and disorganized this place has become. They are clearly under-staffed and over-booked. Plan on waiting a long time, even with an early morning appointment. The vet tech was polite, but the doctor, who eventually saw us after a long wait in a tiny room that was uncomfortable for both me and Hannah, seemed rushed and quick to prescribe medication even before he had a chance to see results from the blood work that he ordered that day. Then the real fun began when the vet techs tried to take blood and urine from Hannah. One of the techs was trying to finish her bagel while holding onto the dog, and they held her upside-down by her paws like a pig on skewer! One of the techs actually got mad at the dog, yelling at her and becoming very rough. "That's enough! You hold still!" Like the dog can understand - she's a scared animal not a poorly behaved two-year-old. I was pretty upset by this point. My dog is 16 - you would think they would have the sense to handle her with a little more care.

Then I had more questions for the doctor, as I was not comfortable with the prescription he made without really examining the dog, but I was told that the doctor was "extremely busy" and could not take the time. So we left.

Our appointment was on Saturday - they said they would call on Monday with the results of the blood test. It's now Thursday, so I called to see if the results were in. They are, but the doctor is apparently still "extremely busy and will not be able to get back to me until this evening."

Aspen Commons is way too busy for how much staff they have. Take your pet to a vet where they will have the time and patience to deal with you and your animal, especially if your pet is elderly and doesn't take kindly to being held upside-down by the paws.
