This chain is a rip off. I came in to do just a 30 minute tan before a trip. I was conned into signing up for the entire month of unlimited tanning THAT the employee claimed I would get for a special price that is normally much higher. I was asked to sign something that I was told were just the agreement to the tanning T&C's and acknowledge the typical FDA warnings/risks. What the salesperson didn't tell me was I was actually signing up for a monthly subscription at $125.59 a month. I don't use the credit card that I charged this service to much and so I don't really check it , but it is for my toll road account, etc. I thought every month was unusually high, so I was shocked when I finally realized that this charge was occurring on my credit card monthly and not some beach store I had shopped at, as it wasn't clear where it was coming from. I discovered I was into them to the tune of $1511.40. I had only used their service 1 time and they refused to refund my money. I called their customer service and sat on hold for 20 minutes before anyone answered. They said they could only refund half and then threatened me that if I submitted a claim through my AmEx customer service that I would receive nothing. I asked to speak to a manager to see if they could resolve to my satisfaction. They transferred me, but the call went straight to voicemail. She called back 5 days later, but didn't leave her extension. Their phone system search by name doesn't work. I got her extension from their Customer Service and entering that didn't work either. 4 weeks later I was finally able to get in touch with this supervisor only after threatening negative posts on the internet and social media. She too, said that due to Company policy, she could not refund all of my money and would only credit back half. Clearly this company has no problem steeling money from people and getting paid for services they didn't provide. Basically, 1 tan ended up costing me $755.70. I personally wouldn't want to do business with a company that is this dishonest and greedy. I would have much sooner donated this money to feed the poor and homeless that for a company that provides something as shallow as tanning services. All I can say, is buyer beware. Think twice before support a business like this if you have any sense of moral character at all.

I like the store of course but love the staff. Buddy is there a lot and is so friendly to everyone including his employees I went in to tan before the game. He is a great fan of the Nuggets and Broncos I love to talk sports with him because he gets it. So see you there.

Deceptive and fraudulent business practices. My daughter signed the infamous "contract" so many others have written about. She then took a job with a travel nurse company and left the state for 6 months. Even though she had a signed job contract with a hospital in CA and a signed lease agreement with an apartment complex out of state, they said that didn't "prove" she moved out of state. They insisted that she get a CA driver's license. Obviously something a travel nurse cannot do. Travel nurses CANNOT work within 50 miles of their home but must maintain, obviously, their permanent home of record.....DON'T sign any contracts with this fraudulent company, and check out the Attorney General's file as well as other customer's complaints.

I gave my son a 6 month tanning package for his 19th birthday. One of his favorite gifts ever. During the 5th month, he was there and the manager said she could lower his monthly payment by $20 for the next month. He said that sounds good. He went and tanned, then came out, and she said to sign the papers, and he signed and left.
My husband and I were out of the country and when we got home we had a letter from Aspen Acceptance Corp. The monthly payment is under my credit card because it was my birthday gift to him.
I called to cancel and they would not let me. They would only let me take my credit card off as the means of payment, but would now bill my son $62.95 a month for 24 months.
Turns out my son DUPED into signing a 24 month finance agreement with their finance company, ASPEN ACCEPTANCE for a total of $1510.80!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He had no idea. He was not told he was signing a 24 month contract. I called the person that TRICKED him into doing this and she said she told him 3 times he was extending his contract 24 months.
My son would have never signed a 24 month contract and I know she did not tell him!!!! Ask 100's of others who had the same thing happen and have complained with the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU.
SOME 19th BIRTHDAY PRESENT. He cannot pay $62.95 a month. Now he is going to end up with BAD CREDIT because of their deceptive business practices.
When I called to cancel, they refused, and said they can take my credit card off, but since my son is over 18, he is legally responsible because he signed. I called and talked to 4 people who WERE ALL RUDE and all told me he should have known what he was signing.
Do they know they have had 503 similar COMPLAINTS in the last 10 months, FOX 31 has INVESTIGATED them, 2009 complaints were SO BAD that the OWNER, HOYLE BELT, offered contracted nullifications for people who felt they were DUPED, there are many complaints with the Attorney General, they are TOP 10 in complaints of all businesses in the STATE of COLORADO??????
Every time I call, I request to be escalated to managers, but am REFUSED. I asked to talk to the district manager of the store my son signed the finance agreement and the manager of the supervisor of the call center.
Hoyle Belt, owner of At the Beach, shame on you for causing a 19 year old boy to have bad credit when it was supposed to be a birthday present. That borderlines PREDATORY! Is your product and customer service not enough to get customers to come back without tricking them into expensive finance agreements!

If you look at all the other At the Beach locations, they are writing the possitive comments themselves. You will see the same comments with the same names attached. Do you want to give business to a company that has to lie about their reputation because no customer will actually write a possitive response? Please look into this company before visiting it.

FOX 31 Investigates: Burned 'At The Beach'
Heidi Hemmat KDVR Investigative Reporter
10:01 PM MST, November 25, 2009
DENVER, Colo. - All they wanted was a tan. Instead, hundreds of Coloradans say they got tricked into signing ironclad contracts.
Kevin Lanoha and his wife, Bridget, say lying "At the Beach" salespeople talked them into signing a $45 a month membership which -store employees said- could be canceled at anytime.
"It was absolutely clear, I could cancel at any time," says Kevin. But they were really signing a one year contract that they could not break.
"I was angry, and frustrated," Kevin, who is also a lawyer, told us. "It's a pretty bold scam...I'm still actually quite shocked by it."
And the Lanoha's are not alone.
Hundreds of customers from across the country have filed complaints against the tanning superstore. The Better Business Bureau in Oklahoma City, where "At the Beach" is based, gives the company an "F" rating. Colorado's BBB gives the company a "D minus."
Customers claim they got duped into believing what the salespeople were saying, instead of reading the fine print on the contract.
"I totally feel like I was duped," another customer, Sean White, told us. "No one reads the six-point font and the two page-long contract."
"It's called deceptive advertising," Kevin Lanoha says.
The contract Kevin and many of the others signed says it cannot be broken unless you move 25 miles from an "At The Beach" location. It also says any verbal agreement is not legally binding.
Another customer we spoke with, Jordan Shore, still couldn't get out of her $2,000 contract, even after she got accepted to attend college in Australia. She even provided proof to At the Beach's corporate office.
"I'm not even going to be in the country, so I'm obviously not going to be using it, but I'm still paying $50 a month," Shore said.
Hoyl Belt, who identified himself as a spokesperson for "At the Beach," says they are aware of the complaints. He insists you can cancel if you move 25 miles away, and he says recently the company made it possible for customers to buy out their contract, by paying 50% of the balance due.
Belt says the new "buyout" option is spelled out on their new contract form. And, he says, their employees are not deceiving their customers.
"We secret shop our stores at an expense of thousands of dollars a month to ensure information is being handled right," Belt told us.
But when we went into "At the Beach" undercover, I was assured I could cancel my 12 month contract at anytime.
"You can cancel whenever you want to," the employee said. The salesperson never mentioned the "buyout" or that I'd have to move away to do it.
A former "At the Beach" employee, who wanted to remain anonymous, told us she was trained to tell people they could cancel at anytime even though she soon figured out it wasn't true.
"I felt really bad for the customers. Every time they signed a membership it was like they were signing their whole credit card over to the company."
At the Beach customers who feel they've been 'burned' don't have to take it lying down.
They can contact the Colorado Attorney General to file a formal complaint at 1-800-222-4444 or email stop.fraud@state.co.us.

Complaints prompt changes 'At the Beach'
Heidi Hemmat Investigative Reporter
9:53 PM MST, December 17, 2009
DENVER, Colo. - It's the response "At the Beach" customers wanted, but never thought they would get.
At the Beach's attorney tells FOX 31 News that the company is offering a "courtesy cancellation" to any customer who feels they got scammed into signing contract they could not break.
"We want to find out if there is a problem and if there is we want to fix it," said attorney Richard Ogden.
"Through the end of the year (January 2009), we are offering a courtesy cancellation to anyone who believes they were misrepresented in terns of their 6 months or 12 months contract."
The change in policy comes after our investigative report exposed consumer fraud claims made by hundreds of At the Beach customers who say they were scammed by lying salespeople who promised their "membership could be canceled at anytime," but they were really signing a one or two-year contract they could not break.
Most of the victims admit they didn't read the agreement, which clearly states it is a contract which cannot be broken unless you move 25 miles away from an "At the Beach" location or you can buyout the contract by paying 50-percent of the balance due on your one-year deal.
Kevin Lanoha, who is a victim and an attorney, says he had good reason to trust what the salespeople told him, because salespeople aren't legally allowed to lie.
"It's called deceptive advertising," said Kevin. "I was angry, frustrated."
Since our report aired, we have taken dozens of additional phone calls from consumers who claim they, too, got duped by deceptive salespeople.
More than 100 people have posted the same kind of complaints on our website and through email, and 68 additional consumer fraud complaints have been filed with the Colorado Attorney general.
"At the Beach's" owner, Hoyle Belt, still doesn't believe his employees are doing anything wrong. But the company's attorney says they are concerned enough about the allegations to make it right.
The "Courtesy Cancellation" policy is effective immediately and will continue through the end of the 2009.
Contact the call center at 1-866-690-9080.
Ogden says you must be "current on your contract, and you have to pay for the tans you've used based on a single session rate" to cancel your membership.

At The Beach customers burned again
Heidi Hemmat Investigative Reporter
9:44 PM MST, December 29, 2009

DENVER, Colo. - Consumer complaints are still flooding our newsroom even after At the Beach responded to our investigation and promised to make it right with their customers.

Hundreds of people say they got duped by lying At the Beach salespeople who talked them into signing a membership that they said could be cancelled at anytime. Instead, they were signing a one or two-year contract they could not break.

After our story aired, At the Beach's attorney Richard Ogden announced the company would offer a limited time, "courtesy cancellation," for people who felt they had been deceived.

"Through the end of the year, we are providing a courtesy cancellation to anyone who believes they were misrepresented in terms of their 6 month or 12 month contract," he said.

Ogden said customers have until December 31st 2009 to take advantage of the offer. He also said customers would have to be "current" and pay for the tans they had already used.

But angry consumers say the "courtesy cancellation" is just another scam. Many feel they are being duped for the 2nd time after finding out cancelling their contract will cost them more than the membership itself.

Sarah Hurley is one of dozens of customers who say "what they are doing is a big joke."

Hurley found out she is being charged $30 dollars for every tan she used, that's the single session rate.

"It's not a courtesy at all. If anything, it's a bigger scam."

Richard Ogden told us they are taking 100 cancelation calls a day. A "good percentage" of the people are satisfied with the courtesy cancellation, although he could not provide exact numbers.

Ogden says if people are still unhappy, he is willing to review their case on an individual basis. They can request an individual review by going to the at the beach website, click on the customer care tab and fill out the form. The requests have to be made by December 31st 2009.

The Colorado Attorney General's office is still investigating the allegations against ATB. You can file a complaint at stop.fraud@state.co.us

These guys have a lot of beds and there isn't a wait like you find at a lot of places. Also THEY HAVE LOTS OF BEDS! I get tired of places that only have a few beds and you have to wait forever. Also, they have a lot of locations so if I'm in a different part of town I can always find one and pop in for a few minutes to tan.

This place isn't the scam everyone tries to make it out to be. You do sign an agreement and they do hold you to it, but it is no different than any gym contract (Ballys, 24 hr etc) I think the confusion is that the contract goes month to month after the 12 months is up and you are canceling the month to month part. You can't just cancel the 12 months part it wouldn't be a contract then would it? I stood there and read the entire thing before I singed it. I would recommend that everyone do that with every agreement they sign.

These people con you into signing a two-year contract with no way to get out of. They are rude, un-ethical and I'm shocked they are still in business with the way their customers are treated.

Their front desk staff - the face of their company - know nothing about corporate polices and therefore consistently give out false information. They try to sell you a different lotion every time you walk in and the beds are crap - missing light bulbs in the majority of the rooms.

I am furious with service and willingness to provide customer service - DO NOT TAN HERE.

Check out their Better Business Beuru ratings for a better idea about this place! They were on the news for a reason, they sell your information and contract to another company! They also do not represent the brands they say they do, I have called the companies involved.

I like how they now have the same person as ("Review", or "Review Boost or MacBeliver") always commenting something different. You have to sign in with your g-mail or facebook or account to review and it is all obviously the same person.Their employees are doing this!

ALSO Contact:
The FTC (the more complaints they have the more they will go after them, this will also help you with your credit down the line)

I really like At The Beach. I saw a negative tv segment on the business and as a tanner it peaked my curiosity. I had heard they have very good beds but to beware because they lie. I went to the store on Broadway. The girl showed me around the store and was extremely nice. She explained all the beds to me. I never knew the difference in beds but she was very knowledgeable and explained it all to me. I did a one time tan in their best bed. I got the best color I've gotten from a bed and I went back the next day and became a member. I did a 1 year package. Nobody lied to me like the news story said. I am very well aware what I became a member on. The pricing and the beds are the best in town and I like to tan so it worked out great for me. I don't understand why people hate this place so much. It's been busy every time I've gone to tan. They must not be all bad to have so much business and have as many stores as they have. I like this place and am glad I became a member.

Do I have to even give 1 star???

Beware before you sign anything!!
If I could do this all over again... I wouldn't.

ATB tanning has employees that don't even know their own policies. I signed a two year contract and was told I could put a 3 month freeze on it at any time... multiple times. This is NOT the case! Also... if you put a 3 month freeze on your account (say it's summer time and you want to use the natural sunlight to tan yourself) it EXTENDS your contract by 3 months! On and it costs you another $10! (which they neglect to tell you!!)

I can't tell you how many times I've been standing in line waiting for a tanning bed and overhearing the employees give their 'spheel' about their 'great tanning salon'. I swear I've heard 3 different versions of 'how the contract works' and every time I question a manager about it I get a different answer! After my contract is up I will NEVER EVER tan at this place again! It's a crock and their employees don't know SH*T!!

7/30/2009 This place is nice enough...until you move out of state and need to cancel your membership. I've been trying to cancel for two weeks...have sent 4 emails, and left 14 voicemails at corporate headquarters. The local salons claim they are unable to freeze the account, much less cancel it, and only refer you back to corporate. Found a phone # for their supposed president, who claimed I'd have to call back and speak to someone else at 7am Oklahoma time. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR ANY CONTRACTS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!

Ruined my credit history and i was told I was on a month-to-month payment. I moved and they will still not cancel. They are asking for $75, a brand new state-issued license with new address, 3 address changing documents proving I moved. They will not accept utility bills, lease contracts, etc. I don't know what other proof they need. When I bought my house, I also noticed, they created a loan on my behalf!!!

ATB is a shady business and the head manager misled and lied to me about the terms of the contract I signed. I specifically asked about cancellations and she told me I could cancel at anytime. After trying to tan on more than one ocasion and having to deal with a long wait and pestering sales people pressuring me to buy $60 lotions, I decided it was not in my best interest to NOT be a member. I called to cancel and was given the corporate number which then led me to another billing number. They have a financial services company that enfoces their contracts and billing and the lady I spoke with herself said she has no control over the way ATB presents the contracts and to avoid messy situations with contract enforcement ATB tanning has hired the finicial services company to do this for them. So basically ATB can blatantly lie to their customers and send all complaints to their billing company so they can dishonestly and unethically swindle people's money from them. I DO NOT want to support these unethical business practices and I am upset about the whole thing. If you experience wrong doing with ATB remember to report them to the appropriate business reporting agencies!!

I went to at the beach tanning and the sweet little orange lady told me that I should sign a two year contract and I would get all this free stuff! I told her that I would be moving to a town where there is no at the beach facilities and she said, no problem. If it's more than 25 miles away, just let me know and I will cancel your membership. Sounded like I couldn't lose! Well, when I moved, I called and the same sweet peach said that she could not cancel it for me and that I would have to call corporate. I called corporate and they said I needed to send them 2 proofs of change of address, a copy of my new driver's license with my new address, a copy of a paycheck or proof from my new employer, $75 money order and more. It's been a year since I've moved and I've yet to change the address on my driver's license. Who has the time for that? Now, I have been sent to collections for $1,200! I tried to cancel, but they make it near impossible and extremely unpleasant.

They are absolute scammers, and do it all with a smile on their face-----all with one perk, their product is actually decent. I like the beds and the spray tan, but the 1 pro to the 100+ cons does NOT make it worth it at all. I was fooled into coming in for a 'free' tanning session, and then they gave me the complete walk through. Meanwhile the crazy * Brooke (stay far away from her) would not give me a straight answer. I asked all the basic questions you would think of and her and her over tanned, over plumped lips would just talk circles round and round. Finally I had wasted WAY too much time in there just to walk away, or so I thought, and was like...okay, just tell me how much I need to pay!! After I had become a month to month member by contract, she told me I was locked in a 24 month contract at 54.99 per month. BS!! I said "Wait! Its for two years? I'd like to cancel now before it's processed. She simply took my contract behind the counter and told me that it was already completed and I was locked in. Meanwhile, I questioned her how I could go about canceling it, and she sat there and lied right to my face. Since, I've been trying to work with corporate, and theyre just as ditzy and dumb as everyone else involved in the company. When I told them that I was moving far far away, they tried to talk me into buying a house close to an At The Beach. I could go on and on as you can tell. Point is. Just dont get involved with this awful awful fraudulent company!!
