When you see a Health Department violations sheet on the front door it's not a good sign. It got worse once we stepped in to look around and its empty...Run Away!

There are plenty of fabulous restaurants in Denver to choose from on any night of the week. This restaurant should not be on your list. I have only been here once, so it may have just been a bad night, but the service was not good and the food was mediocre. The bathroom needs to be "seriously" cleaned.

They've got excellent bargains on happy hour specials including $1 oysters. The sushi specials are delicious and cheap!

I read the reviews and had to say that I've been coming here with my friends for about a million years, and we always have a great time. The food is great. I'm really not sure why people are complaining so much. I think they just expect it to be a five-star dining experience... but that's really not the point of the place. It's a trendy, but fairly cheap little lounge. It's a great place to relax, chat, and get a little tipsy before going dancing. It's really not unusual if your food to take 30 minutes to arrive, but so what? It's not a dinner place, it's a hang-out. If what you want is to arrive, eat your food, and leave (all under an hour,) go to Applebee's or something. If you go here, just chill out and chat with your friends, instead of checking your watch and criticizing the staff.

I don't know how this restaurant stays in business. I neglected to check the reviews for this place until it was too late to change restaurants before a show and what a mistake that was! I have never waited so long for a meal to be served in my life and since there are only 4 items on the menu (with the exception of the sushi), none of which require even a small degree of expertise to prepare, I totally fail to understand why it took 45 minutes to serve our meals - even the sushi! There were only 2 other tables that ordered entrees, so that could not possibly be the excuse. The service was inattentive, the fish was dry and without character and even the bar tender was unable to get the simple martini order correct. Stay away!

My girlfriends and I went in for dinner after looking up the menu online. Come to find out, their actual menu was not the same as the online menu, had far less choices. We were planning on using a $25 coupon, in fact it was the only reason we went. We were told we could not use it . When I asked to speak to a manager the waiter told me that he was not around, when I pressed him, he said "Let me see if I could find him". Eventually someone who looked like a cook came out who could barely speak English. When i told him the issue he literally WALKED AWAY and never came back! We waited 30 minutes and got so fed up, we paid the bill and walked out. Will never go there again.

Just went to Opal for the 2nd time on July 29th 09. Ordered 2 drinks that took 20 mins to arrive. Ordered some sushi and oysters. 1 order of Sushi came out before our drinks...after waiting 50 mins, we cancelled our order and left...with a 47 cent tip!
Who owns this place? Do they read these reviews? If you go, go at 4 when nobody is there and I imagine you'll get your food in a reasonable amount of time. I can't believe this place is still in business. Oh, and the bathrooms....disgusting. Do they ever clean them? The city needs to insect this place.

The wait staff took over an hour to get 3 hand rolls of sushi, messed up our bill, took 45 minutes to give us our bill and did not apologize or offer to comp one thing for us. They were horribly understaffed and the waitress brough us the wrong food, forgot our drinks then messed up our bill. Then there's the mayonaise heavy hand rols which were so unappealing we didn't even want to take our left overs home. Avoid this place like the plague, because odds are you will get the plague from the gnarly bathroom

5280 week is when you try to strut your stuff and impress. Not these guys. For them it was a numbers game. Pack as many people in as possible and lie to everyone about what you are offering on your menu. We went for the lobster...ended up with something the size of a crayfish. They sat us in the lobby...no candle, no silverware, just an empty table right by the front door..and we had reservations!! Main course was cold, service was really slow, so slow we had to ask for our desert to go.

boooo!!!! never again.

We went to Opal last night to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. I was sitting in the bar with a couple of friends and had just ordered sushi. The waiter, up until this point, has been super nice and fun. A friend of mine joined us and asked the waiter for a menu and the waiter gave him such a hard time that it was beyond ridiculous! All my friend did was ask for a menu and the waiter accused him of being an $#&%$@ because he (the waiter) is gay, hands flailing in the air, going off about how my friend does not appreciate his service and how rude it is. I was blown away by this as again, my friend did not do anything to provoke this.

The next few trips this waiter made to the table, he would still be super sweet to me, and my other friend that was sitting with me before the "offensive" friend joined us. When the waiter turned to my "offensive" friend, the attitude instantly changed and he was a $#&%$@ again. This was completely un-called for!

We hung out most of the night since my crew was DJing for the evening. I was hanging out by the DJ booth later in the night and that same waiter came up to me and started apologizing for how he acted but also tried to put blame on my friend. I then told the waiter "but he didn't do anything to you" and then he went off about how people need to understand his stressful job and they need to be nice to him and blah blah blah... I again said "but he didn't do anything to you" and he started to go off about himself again. I stopped him and said I really don't want to have this conversation and he threw a hissy fit and walked off.

I can't believe an establishment would hire a server like that! I'm still somewhat blown away by what happened as it was too weird and ridiculous to be real. We enjoyed our sushi and otherwise had a good time, but the service was effing ridiculous!

Cons: A HORRIBLE SERVER NAMED CHRIS THAT NEEDS AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT!

My wife and I went there last night for 5280 week. We got there a little early for our reservation to take advantage of the happy hour. The tiny sushi was good, but did I mention it was tiny? Same thing with our martinis. They might as well call the martinys. Tiny little martinis. I had 4 within 30 minutes and still couldn't cop a buzz. Looking down at the table with the tiny sushi and tiny martinis, I felt like a giant eating Tiny Town food. But enough about the food. The restoom literally made my wife sick. The stench from the women's restroom was unbearable. Having worked in many restaurants, I know what happens when the owner/manager "gives up" on the restrooms. They just don't care. And if they don't care about the cleanliness of the restrooms, what else don't they care about? The quality/freshness of the food? Even if I had my nose bitten off by an insane chimpanzee and couldn't smell, the restroom still appeared as if it hadn't been cleaned in months. Stains on the walls, floors and ceiling. Rust marks everywhere. Reminded me of a fraternity bathroom after a three day, 20 keg party. Do yourself a favor - seek sushi elsewhere.

So if you haven't been to Opal in a few months don't go back. We used to love this place. Good Asian food, good sushi. Apparentely they changed chefs or owners. The menu is aweful. they took off the Asian dishes and replaced them with cheeseburger and prime riba sandwiches. How weird! Sushi was not great either. I would not recommend it!

Things started out promising-I had heard about the great Happy Hour deals. That was as good as it got. Upon arriving to the table to take our drink order our waitress informed us that she had been drinking the peach sake all night and that it was delicious. We ordered sake and a beer. 10 minutes later she came back and mentioned something mumbly about opening a new box of sake, still no beer. 10 minutes after that she came to the table as another waitress was coming by. She informed her that she couldnt find her card and that she would have to take all her tables. The new waitress was clearly irritated, rolling her eyes and complaining to us. We placed our food order with her. She came back a few minutes later, as she had forgotten what we ordered and we also informed her that the first waitress must have forgotten the drinks. After waiting 30 minutes for drinks the waitress came back (still with no drinks) and said she would see if she could try and have the sake comped. My boyfriend said to her "I just want to make sure you were aware that the other waitress took our drink order more than 30 minutes ago" as it was clear there had been no hand off communication between the two. She snapped back "well its not my fault" and thats just the way it is. She continued to rant on and then stomped off. We left immediately. My boyfriend and I have have nearly 15 years of experience working in restaurants and consider our expectations reasonable. This was the worst experience ever.

I have eaten at nearly every Denver restaurant advertised in Westword. OPal is by far the worst - and this is after giving it three tries since it is so close to my house. The wait-staff is inconsistent and the bartenders are rude. The food took forever to come out on all visits. There was nothing pleasant about Opal - except that I left.
Speak with your dollar, there are much better places to go, especially for happy hour. Do not stand for horrible service or Opal will become the norm!

Some people will be ok with a dinner that takes 2+ hours, so this is not the largest negative opal has to offer. The worst was the server that seemed to hide from us for 30 min. at a time. Luckly we knew the service was going to be bad from the reviews written here, so we were not caught off guard.

On the positive side, the food was good, fresh tasteing, and served at the proper temp. The waitstaff also apologized for the slow service, and said it was "just a busy night, and they rarely have these issues"

The truth is they always have these issues, and they don't comp you a menu item because they can't afford to do that for every table every night.

If you do go to Opal stick to Happy Hour!!!

This had to be the worst dinning experience I have had. We had made a reservation for 10 people over three weeks prior. When we showed up they did not have the reservation. Some of the worst servers. We had to ask numerous times to get drinks or refills. It took 2 hours to get our food and then it was served cold. We complained to the owner and his answer was I'm understaffed. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I planned a birthday dinner with ten people for my husbands birthdy. I called and made reservations a week in advance and even had someone call me back to confirm. When I got my phone call I was told they had complimentary valet parking. I pulled up and got out to ask the host where the valet was. I stood there for almost 10 minutes before someone acknowledge me. All he told me was that he didn't know and that people have been asking that all night. Then he walked away. Our entire party arrived before our reservation and it was clear that no seating was available. We waited for almost 2 hours past our reservation time to be seated. We got the run around from every host/waiter in the place. The practically, in so many words, said "too bad, we over booked." When I told them we were fed up and leaving they didn't even care. So, we went somewhere else that had the best sushi I've ever had and we gave them our 300 dollars. I will never return to Opal and I will encourage everyone I know to steer clear!

The $1 Corona's kept me coming in for happy hour but now they are a whopping $1.95...ha ha. The service has always been great, I had a group event with 20 people and they did a great job of keeping us happy! The decor is fun with comfy lounge chairs and loud 70's and 80's music. Sitting at the bar is great too, the bartenders take good care of you. They have great 2 for 1 nigiri and hand rolls that are always exceptional!

I went 2 weekends ago, and found that this place stinks! the restaurant was half empty on a friday night (bad sign) and yet a fight broke out in the bar requiring the police to come in and arrest a patron. our waitress poured the wrong bottle of wine to top things off, she didnt show us the bottle until she had filled our glasses. when we asked, our waitress said she ran out of what we ordered so brought something "just as good" which turned out to be really bad. we only left a 10% tip because of this and after checking my visa statement found that she added an extra 72 dollar gratuity!

i vote against this place!

I visited Opal about 6 months ago and thought the food was great, the price was right, and the ambiance was amazing. Yes, the service wasn't the best, but not too bad. Recently I went to Opal at 7:30 PM on a Friday night. and was surprised to see how run down the restaurant looks. The patio alone was full of empty beer bottles. The carpet was so worn, the tables had signficant paint missing, and the chairs looked like they had been scratched to pieces. If they do not plan to keep up with restaurant maintenance, maybe they should consider turning the lights down so you can't see it very well. With hardly anyone in the restaurant, the servers seemed more interested in their table setup than they did with their customers. After we were seated and spent a signficant amount of time looking through the menu, because no one was coming to take our drink order, we walked out. If you are not willing to make time for your customers, what other short cuts are you taking? I am glad we left before I was served one of their "shortcut" preparations. I will never return to Opal.

Believe what you read.....the service is exactly what everyone says, "slow" and "poor". Although, you have a good time and the food is pretty tastey, just don't expect prompt friendly service.

As you can tell from the previous reviews the service is bad. So if you want good service go to Sushi Den. But if you want to have a really fun night and your not a snob then give Opal a try. I have been going to Opal almost weekly for about 4 months and I ALWAYS have a great time. The bad service has become quite the draw. My boyfriend and I think it is really funny and we always joke about it. In fact, even the servers will admit its not a service driven restaurant. BUT the food is 5 stars. Order the Opal Roll and prepare to be amazed.

Pros: FUN & FOOD

Cons: SERVICE

.

I've never posted an online review; now, after three trips to Opal, I feel compelled to do so. I've been to the restaurant on a Sunday, a weeknight and a weekend night, with groups of varying sizes, from two to five. Each visit has been progressively worse, and my unhappiness is almost solely based on the service. The food is actually quite good and reasonably priced (approx. $4 to $12 for a six- to eight-piece sushi roll), but it will probably be an hour before you are able to taste it - strange since I've never seen more than five tables seated in the place at the same time. Once you get your food, you'll probably be waiting for your drinks while your servers are hanging out at the bar, or - more likely - nowhere to be found. I'd say the worst part is the fact that some of the staff members have the audacity to act annoyed when you bother them for something like a second set of chopsticks or fork (when they've only brought one, or none, to your party of two) or for a water refill that you've been waiting on for more than an hour. On my most recent visit, we actually observed the bartender refilling our (used) water glasses only to have our server accidentally deliver them to another table!

Pros: Reasonable prices, good food., good support staff (i.e., host and bussers).

Cons: Sub-par service, happy hour specials good, but don't live up to what is promised on site (2-for-1 sushi includes about six of the 40 items on menu).

Walking into Opal at 6pm on a Friday, the place was virtually empty. Yet we still received terrible and incredibly slow service. After waiting 10 minutes for a simple glass of water and another 15 for my drink order, the waiter got both my appetizer and dinner order completely wrong. On top of that, our water was not refilled a single time in the hour and a half we spent at the restaurant. And at the end of the night, my friend and I both ended up violently ill. I will never return to this restaurant.

Three of my friends and I went there the end of October, we almost didn't go b/c of some of the reviews but figured, you really can't beat $1 Corona's. We had such a great experience! Our waiter was on top of it and kept the beers coming frequently and quickly. He also gave us free saki - much to our joy. The atmosphere is very nice, the bar area is super sheek and we moved in there after awhile. The hand rolls were good, not the freshest sushi I've ever had but they were still good. You really can't go wrong with the happy hour and our service was phenomenal - give OPAL A CHANCE!

Dining at Opal made me feel important. Plush couches in the lounge surrounded by hip industrail decor feel like a new york night club rather than a Denver eatery off Lincoln. The menu has a range of sushi and asian cuisine fused with american noveau cooking. We had two plates of lush and delicious meals as well as a tasty fresh sushi appetizer and a nice wine pairing. The tuna ahi was seared to perfection with a fabulous sashimi rare/raw interior. The rich potato and spinich pairings melted in my mouth and the while the seabass could have been a little more tender it's flavor was delightful.

Service was a wee bit slow, but the waitstaff was attentive.

When we went the smoking area wafted occasionally into the lounge area where we ate, but now that the laws have changed in Denver it is probably not an issue.

There's a few bad reviews on here, and I can see why. They were expecting a polished Japanese restaurant, and this isn't it.
The only thing I can compare it to is an ultra-swank Izakaya from Japan. (Where friends would get together and share beer and appetizers)
To get the full experience, you need to go there during happy hour with a few of your friends and share a few appetizers with your favorite japanese liquor (beer or sake). The prices during happy hour are downright reasonable, and I have never gotten a sake hangover.

I had to put in my two cents, I went to Opal a little over a year ago, and had the same experience as most other people, was not served, had to walk up to the bar (we were seated at a table) to get my drink, as it had been sitting there for about 15 minutes and our server was no where in sight. We tried to sit outside, but no one was being served outside (there were about 3 other parties there that night, and all 3 were angry as well). Finally after about an hour and a half our sushi came, it was good, but we were overcharged. It seemed like a pretty nice place with good deals, I was hoping they would improve and i would go back, but apparently they are still the same Opal!

Get this: 2 for 1 is based on quanity not price so they screw you when the bills comes. Just got back and got in a huge argument with the server. They overcharged or mischarged the entire section of the bar we were in.(is that possible?YEP!) One group waited over an hour for their sushi!!! (there were maybe 20 people total in the bar...oh yeah, the bartender was less than cool as well and was rude. They have this awesome happy hour and the food is actually decent but the service and attitude is worth skipping...not to mention that most sushi places have good happy hours so I would go to HAPA or Sushi Hai anyday over Opal.I hope the place burns down.

Seemed like it would be chic ... but its like they forgot to finish decorating.
Seemed like it would be busy on a Friday night at 8:30 ... but there were only 4 tables of people eating.
Seemed like we'd get good service with only 4 other tables of diners ... however the only one willing to wait on us was the hostess. Thank God she cared. The other servers wandered around aimlessly. The sushi chefs looked bored as well, no one was sitting at the sushi bar.
Seemed like you would expect a CLEAN restaurant! ... However 2 tables sat un-bussed for almost an hour next to us. GROSS! Remember me saying there was ONLY four other tables! Hello?
So to more nitty gritty details - the sound system in this restaurant was really bad. And I'm not that huge into sound systems...but I noticed. The place is supposed to be hip - there's a bar in the adjacent room (which was actually hopping somewhat), but if you're going to play your music loud, have a nice sound system! More on music - they played a few good techno / dance type songs, but most were at least 5 years old. Wouldnt anyone working there like to buy newer music?

Okay, so maybe the restaurant was having an off night. But having read the other reviews, I dont think my review is too far off.

Dinner experience is something to totally skip, but late night is awesome. Great drink specials. Their martinis are huge and on Thursday nights they have great music playing. They have 2 for 1 specials on drinks as well as food with awesome music in a chill, relaxing enviroment. Only suggestion is ordering only off the late night menu. We ordered an appetizer of calamari which was the same price as 3 martinis.

I have never experienced such bad service in my life. We waited forever for drinks, when the saki was brought to us, we had no glasses to drink out of. Then it took over an hour to get food. Which was not even what we ordered. We were not given chopsticks to eat with or any soy sauce or anything to put soy sauce in. It took 3 times to get our order half way right. The resturaunt was not even busy. When we aked the manager for chopsticks he told us not to raise our voices this was a fine dining establishment. Are you kidding me I would love to eat if someone would bring me food and utinsils. The waiter chased us out of the restaraunt because we didn't leave a tip. They are lucky we didn't leave halfway through dinner. Don't go to this restaraunt! Awful!

I received a coupon in the mail for Opal months ago. I looked it up on Citysearch to read the reviews and was disappointed by all the bad reviews! My boyfriend, being less picky than me, suggested we go anyways. We had a FANTASTIC experience. I admit that the service was slow, but the food was wonderful. When we ordered hot saki at the recommendation of our waiter and didn't like it, he took it off the bill without us even asking. I have since been back with friends who loved the sushi specials. I feel bad that the reviews on Citysearch are so poor! I live near the restaurant and frequently meet people who live in downtown Denver and go to Opal on a regular basis. The company I work for uses Opal for business lunches and I have yet to hear a complaint. Give this place a chance!

went here a few weeks ago for the frist time. the food was great we sampled items from the dinner and sushi menu. the 2-1 sushi was a great deal, it was all the items i liked and where cleaned right and very fresh.
the music could have been better being as it was a radio station and the manager "i asume" was nice but did'nt seem the part by apearence.
service was very detailed and keep our drinks full and table clear. also was very helpfull in selecting wine to match our courses.
it did seem a little smoky but the overall experience kept our minds off it.
i will be coming back for the great 2-1 special wich we where told was every night twice a night!

I cannot honestly be objective about the food because I had such a bad taste in my mouth from the service. The staff was rude and left us sitting for quite a while without any drinks or food. Each meal was brought out at different times and one person's was completely forgotten. There were only 2 other occupied tables in the restaurant so I can't blame it on them being busy. Not sure if I will be going back to this one...

We went for sushi happy hour on a Friday night, my friends and I were one of the first in the bar at 5:30p. We ordered our sushi and didn't see it until past 7pm after asking the waitress who basically told me to go get it myself before walking away from me. I had already gone to the restaurant for chop sticks and soy sauce. Why did it take so long? Her excuse - we ordered an appetizer, our appetizer was edamame (which took 45 minutes to get)?!? We realized we didn't get any of the pieces we ordered just the rolls and of course had been charged for everything. We went to the manager and instead of re-totaling our check he just crossed off the items! We were furious, paid what we thought we owed and walked out.

Attempted to eat there about 2 weeks ago and ended up leaving without even a drink. Upon arrival the place was half full and it took the manager about 10 min to greet us (that should have been a sign). We were seated and he said he would be back for our drink orders. He never returned. We waited 35 min. The place wasn't even busy. I guess they don't serve my kind there (young professional).

don't waste your money. You're better off walking down broadway to the 7-11 and picking up a can of starfish tuna. ditto on the last review...service was pathetic...server forgot drinks...our lobster ravioli sat under the warmer for at least 5 minutes before being brought to our table. There was about 15 people in the restuarant so they can't blame being busy for such pathetic service. But their happy hour sushi prices are pretty good (2 for 1) so I went back again and things were again horrible. It took them 15 minutes to bring my sister miso soup. This time I talked to the owner about all the problems and he said he would buy my next dinner. I won't be taking him up on his offer.....

Thought this would be a nice place to try on a Sunday night. Got there about 6:30 and it was fairly busy. We were seated quickly. One person waiting on entire dining room. Sat completely unattended for at least 10-15 minutes. Were never approached at all. Waitress responed to the tables next to us at least twice so they knew we were there. Can't comment on food as we got up and left after being ignored for so long. Service was horrible.

Opal is one of my favorite sushi places in Denver. The white tables cloths and modern atmosphere give it an elegant ambiance, but the prices are reasonable, especially the 2 for 1 sushi happy hour!! The staff is friendly and service is great. Free valet parking makes arrival easy. The only drawback is, word-of-mouth is making this place really popular!!

This is possibly the worst dining experience I have ever had! First of all we were seated WITHOUT menus, and after waiting for 20 mins we decided to get them ourselves. After waiting yet another 10 mins we finally heard a sob story from our waiter about how horrible his night was. After receiving cocktails & placing our orders we waited an hour & a 1/2 for SUSHI. Our waiter also forgot about the appetizer we ordered & then Double charged us for it at the end of the evening. Disappointed hardly describes this experience. If you're hungry or expect good service STAY AWAY!!

We arrived at 6 PM and did not leave until 930! App was supposed to be Prawn Tempura. We both got four to five small shrimp. Salad was good (how could they screw that up) but WAY too long beteewn courses. Up to 90 minutes from salad to entree. Entree was tepid. For the price we could have done Ruth Chris, Potager, or Painted Bench. We got crap at $100 an hour.
