Message from Japango

This chic sushi place offers an escape from the bustle of Pearl Street Mall. The decor of stainless steel and black with swirls of silver, are softened by fresh flowers on the tables and the natural light. Every bite of fish is snapping fresh, from the creamy, fatty tuna (Toro) to the smooth yellowtail and salty flying fish roe. Traditional appetizers include light tempura, dynamite lobster rolls and beef gyoza (pot-stickers).

fancy/expensive sushi place

by Gerame G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,002

i went here once with some friends for an all you can eat sushi deal they do on tuesdays. it's 30 bucks/person and has a really nice selected variety of types of sushi you can choose from. i think you can only get like 8 pieces at a time but there is always more. they say they charge 50 cents per piece you leave on your plate but your server should be cool about it if you're friendly and it's just a couple of pieces.

Chic sushi restaurant in Boulder.

by Laura T. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,070

Ate here once for lunch and really enjoyed it. We had sushi and sat at the sushi bar. It wasn't the best sushi that I ever had but it was good. The service was very good and our waiter was helpful and funny.

Used to Like...Until I Ate THERE...

by molranasaurausrex

I had always ordered the rolls as a delivery. Until I decided I wanted to go out and get sushi and recomended this place as good. The seating is crowded and overpacked and the tables small and uncomfortable made of metal and very alienating and awkward. There were people packed and on my every corner and servers were constantly thus walking this way and that, all in my personal space. The worst part was leaving, after we left, we smelled SO badly/strongly. You are not supposed to smell after leaving a Japanese restaurant; when you do it means they do not change their oil [i.e. for tempura] and is in general a dirty place. I know this because I was raised as a child of a Japanese restauranteur.

Cons: smelly

Excellent happy hour and friendly, attentive service

by Aims709

Stumbled upon Japango looking for sushi happy hour while visiting Boulder. Had heard of other supposedly excellent sushi eateries in town, but this one was convenient and we were hungry. The Boulder roll was amazing...I have been craving it since. All the sushi was extremely fresh and creative. Our waitress was helpful and very friendly. We'll definitely be back on next, hopefully soon, visit!

Pros: Outdoor seating, great happy hour

best sushi place in boulder

by bouderite

I've been frequenting all the boulder sushi places over the past few years (hapa, tora, zanmai, akiyama). Japango is definitely my favorite. It has a decent happy hour menu, and it is a great escape from the bustle of pearl street without sitting at a window like you are on display. I am always happy with the food quality. The blonde tatooed waitress Alex is super cute and friendly and does her job well.

Pros: fresh food, fun atmosphere, great service

Cons: a little expensive

fresh sushi, busy, energetic, fun

by terraunbound

Went to Japango for happy hour and was very pleasantly surprised. Lots of variety of rolls and appetizers, the fish was fresh, lots of tastes combined together. It was very busy but also fun. Our server has attentive even though the place was packed. I'd like to go back for a complete meal and savor each dish.

Best sushi in Boulder

by gmoney47

I never write reviews on here, but the Japango experience has compelled me to do so. I have always loved sushi and since I have grown up here in Boulder, have been to every sushi restaurant. Hapa is by far the worst because of their inability to serve fish that is fresh. Sushi Tora is perfect for someone who appreciates authentic Japanese cuisine, but I prefer the more Americanised version of Japanese dishes. Sushi Zanmai is excellent and is a close runner up to Japango. In the end, however, Japango takes the cake. The interior is decorated beautifully, and the service is always quick, friendly, and efficient. The food is what sets them above. On Sunday nights they have free edamame, which is awesome. Try the Tuna Tataki and the Las Vegas roll. You will thank me later.

Pros: Food, service, ambience

Cons: Parking.

Too Much Rice

by Reneyroo

I like Japango - Happy Hour prices are definitely worth it, but why do they insist on using so much rice on their rolls?! In any case, go for HH and you'll be satisfied. A better choise for a quality sushi experience in Boulder is Sushi Tora on 10th.

low quality, bad sushi menu

by janjan12

try zanmai or tora, sloppy food presentation, my wife and I were very dissapointed. The hot food menu was large, but the sushi menu wasnt! Our food was served to us on a plastic plate! About the only thing good was my wife's saketini. If you like japanese food the hot food is ok, but with such a short sushi menu and poor presentation and I do not recommend this place.

Pros: prompt service- not busy

Cons: sushi menu

Best sushi in Boulder!

by michelle1020

I've been to every sushi joint in Boulder, and nothing compares to Japango. The fish is always incredibly fresh, the staff is highly knowledgeable and the atmosphere is very fun. So many Boulderites reccomend Hapa, but that stuff is terrible. Hapa uses MSG & imitation crab (I know because I used to work there), so it is great to have a sushi restaraunt that is committed to bringing the best ingredients and quality service to Boulder. I love Japango, and you will too.

Pros: Quality, service, ambience

Cons: parking

All you can eat is not a good deal

by teasy

Enjoyed Japango for the first time last night, food was very good. Service was functional, but not the least bit charismatic or memorable.
All you can eat sushi seems like a great deal, and the selection is amazing - now I'm all for reducing waste, but they charged us 50 cents for each rice ball left on our plate! Pretty lame considering our bill was already $100 between four people. Next time I'm in the mood for sushi, I'll go to Happa!

Best Sushi in a long time!!!!!! Food and Service was Awesome!!!

by jake23

Wow,
I had not been back into Japango in a couple months and it was probably the best sushi I have ever had. I have now been twice in the last few weeks, and both times it everything was incredible. All the fish was great, very fresh and had a couple of new appetizers that were delicious. The servers were a lot of fun and made me want to come back from their service and attitude alone. Great time, they have really kicked it up a notch! Try the Hamachi Jalapeno appetizer. I heard that management or ownership has changed so maybe that has something to with their superior sushi in Boulder now. There is probably no other place I will go in Boulder if they keep this up.

Pros: Food and Service was awesome!!!!

Cons: Nothing!!!

Overrated!!!

by hotstreams

Alot of Boulderites consider Japango to be almost as good as Hapa or Zanmai, but it's not even close. To start with, the serivce as ALWAYS slow and somewhat unfriendly, and most importantly the sushi isn't that good.
Boulder has tons of great sushi, don't ruin your sushi experience by going to Japango.

Pros: Decor

Cons: Food and service

Good deal

by mesas

The lunch special are great (although a little slow if you're on a 30-minute lunch break).
The radio is annoying, but if you don't mind, the food is excellent.

Pros: good food, inexpensive

Cons: radio

OK, but there's much better in Boulder

by laginsburg

Japango is OK, but it's not great. We order take out from here quite a bit because they deliver. But the sushi is pretty average, not the freshest around, and the cooking is not very inventive. If you need some food delivered, or if better Japanese restaurants are filled, this is a safe bet. But otherwise, you can do much better in Boulder for sushi.

Pros: delivery, good staff

Cons: not the freshest fish, pretty boring menu

Best sushi on Pearl.

by bparrish

Fresher and considerably more authentic sushi than the local competitors, I became a big fan on Japango within 5 minutes on my first visit. Sushi fans strolling Pearl should look no further.

Pros: Fresh, Delicious, Comfortable

Try the Magic Mushrooms!

by wondergirl933

I love Japango! Everything from their Magic Mushrooms (which don't even have mushrooms in them), to their specialty rolls, especially the Chicago and the New York. Great atmosphere and super prices, don't miss this one in Boulder, or Japon in Denver!

Pros: Great Food, Good Value

Good Sushi future shock, all you can eat

by din_drum

WOW! When I walked in the atmosphere was very Unique. The enteryway had a few waiting tables with mini flatscreen TVs. It was packed the wait time was about 15 minutes. The waiting area is small so we waited outside and did a little window shopping. The wait is worth it. You can call in ahead, which I do recommend. Once seated I couldn't help but look around at the surroundings. The dim lights made me feel like I was eating outside at night. I had the All you can eat sushi(Tuesdays only) Had just about everything and it was all good. The Samon Mushrooms, I highly recommend. Very Good. The service was great and the staff was helpful. The value was unbeatable. There normal day prices are great as well. At the end of the night I left full and satisfied, and had a longing to come back.

Pros: All U can eat tuesday, You can call In ahead

Cons: sometimes very busy
