I refused to even consider this place for a long time because of its seedy appearance, frequent sunglass salesmen setting up shop in their parking lot and otherwise untidiness of the lot. However, I was told by several people that this is easily the best Middle Eastern restaurant in the area. And they were right! The food is GREAT - excellent hummos. Can't say the ambiance is great, so don't take a 1st date, but go with a friend. Good good food.

Wow - you'd never know it from the outside (because the outside is reminiscent of a gas station), or the INSIDE (because, though better than a gas station, it still needs some serious design help) - but this restaurant ROCKS. Ya Hala offered up some of the best middle eastern food I've ever tasted. The spinach pies are amazing, and my husband ordered a salmon dish that knocked our socks off. The service was a little on the "cool" side, until my 5-year-old son decided to make friends with our server. Better after that!

Fantastic food. Some of the best Middle Eastern you'll have in Denver. The outside can be very deceiving but the food is not to be missed. Great hummus and shwarma. The service leaves a little to be desired but it is worth overlooking.

don't go for a quick meal. Go for the incredible flavors!

Best hummus and lamb appetizer in denver. Wow. All the meats are incredible. Service is laughably bad... but who cares? They are nice and it has its hole in the wall charm.

I've gone 3 differnt times. Twice for lunch and once for dinner. Painfully slow service each time. I should be able to get in and out of a restaurant within an hour, especially when I am one of 3 to 5 people in the whole place. Dinner service was so terribly slow that I asked for the bill early. The server nodded and walked away, I assumed to get the tab. He was not to be seen again. I'm still not sure if you just get your bill at the front counter or they bring it to you...this place is a mess. The food might be okay, at best, but who cares. Service counts for too much of the experience. There are too many good restaurants in Denver to spend my hard earned money on.

Wow, I've never been almost punched by a waiter for trying to order a refill. Yikes this was a big surprise especially since I've been going to this place since I was a teenager and it's been somewhat satisfactory until now.

We arrived, 4 of us and after practically having to clean the table ourselves, sat down and got to ordering. The drinks arrived with some aplomb, and all seemed well. However, the waiter kept giving us that "I hate you for being here" look (for no reason) and it didn't sit well, but still we persisted. 30 minutes later our salads (diced tomatoes and cucumbers) arrived and we were all very grateful in a way that started to make us upset. Next time the waiter crept out from behind the hookahs, my uncle Thom requested a refill of his drink to which the waiter replied "we don't do free refills" in a very harsh tone. My uncle replied "oh don't worry about that, I pay for everything I order." The waiter's chance to redeem himself was rebutted and he persisted in informing the whole table that there were no free refills on anything and then glared at us for what seemed like ages before disappearing again. My brother (who has worked in the restaurant industry for the past 20 years) had just been telling us that he doesn't let things like this get to him; got up and went to the register to let Ya Hala know we were walking out. It is worth noting that 3 other groups had walked out just ahead of us.

After trying to charge us $36 for 4 mediocre salads and ice teas, our waiter offered $24 which we also rejected. Finally throwing $12 on the counter, we left and head for Garbanzos, a place where we didn't get scorned for ordering a refill.

Ya Hala????? Never again

I ate here once and couldn't understand why the ratings were so good, and why it was listed as best Middle Eastern food in Denver. Was it the only place they ate at? I think the only place that tastes worse is Jerusalem.
I was hired here and after one week working told myself I would never eat here again! The owner was rude, as were his wife and daughter. The cook was so slow, I probably could have served and cooked at the same time and still been quicker. The owner would drop food on the ground and serve it anyway. They sprayed insectiside spray around the food. There was no dish sanitizer. Not a place I would trust eating at. He told me not to come back when I told him I couldn't work on the days he told me he wouldn't need me.

Pros: Business hours

Cons: Everything else

This place is delicious. The gyro and falaffel sandwiches are tremendous and if you call ahead they will have them ready and you will be on your way to heaven. The food is cheaper and better than the food at Jerusalem and I would never go there again after eating at this place. I have no idea if the service is good or not when you sit, but this is the best carry out joint in this part of town by far.

My boyfriend, daughter & myself were there last week. We had quite possibly the WORST service I have EVER had. The offending server was the OWNERS daughter. When we were there about a month earlier we had a wonderful young male server. He was friendly, charming & gave great service. No such luck this time. Mean waitress let us sit & ponder the menu for about 15 min before "gracing" us with her presence. She forgot our appitizer. My boyfriend found a hair in his food. When charming waiter checked on us (not his table, not his tip, but he checked nonetheless) I told him we were really pleased with the food, just not the app. It was sour tasting. He came back to the table & informed us that the manager said because we touched it, we had to pay for it. BAD policy, I told charming waiter. He was so apologetic. But there was nothing he could do. When I went to pay I mentioned the lone hair, not belonging to my boyfriend, in his food. I told charming waiter, maybe the cook should wear a hat. This is where it gets CRAZY: Mean waitress YELLED ( or Hala'd, rather) at me. Screaming that I was talking about her father. I suggested a ball cap for Father's Day. She ACTUALLY dropped the F bomb in front of my daughter. Who is 12. She was so out of line that charming waiter HELD her back with one arm & COVERED her mouth with the other. I have NEVER witnessed anything like this before.
I have to tell you, the food is GREAT. With the exception of the garlic mashed potato app. Food can't always be perfect every time. I understand that. But to be treated the way we were by a 19 year old snot nosed brat is appalling. Unforgivable. The owner never came out calm her down, which was also very disturbing.
I will never return to Ya Hala. I encourage the same for you. Which sucks, frankly. Best hummus I've ever had. Perhaps charming waiter should manage the joint.

I've been to Ya Hala twice now...and I think the second time was my last time unless one of my friends REALLY wants to go and drags me there. The food is good...however I've had much better Greek salads and much better hummus. The first time I went I was in a bit of a hurry so I thought the 'slow service' was more my interpretation of the situation. However, the second time I went with my boyfriend neither of us got drink refills and we ordered the Hummus appetizer and it came with only ONE pita. ONE. We asked for more but the waiter just pretty much ignored us the rest of the time presumably to avoid giving us more bread. Getting the check took forever on both visits. It's too bad really because the place is quite cute and charming and a bit more intimate than some other options, but totally not worth it because of the service. Look, there's like four similar type restaurants a bit further south on Colorado. Try one of those.

If you are fond of Gyros... you will like this little eatery. They do offer a full middle eastern menu, but the gyros was what will bring me back. Recently renovated, this eatery has my vote for one of the best gyros around. The sauce was just right (cucumber - yogurt or sour cream) actually accented the food instead of drowning it. The flan was also very good. We only stopped in and had the lunch special, but will now have to try the full dinner experience. parking was a bit of a problem, but the food made the hunt for a spot worth while. I will be eating here again

On the table there are copies of the various reviews from westword, post, etc. It's funny, in those reviews it very plainly describes what everyone else does...really good food and really horrifying service.

Actually, there was some good service while we were there, except that it was the other server for seemingly every table but ours and one other. We waited forever for drinks, forever for appetizers that finally came out with the food, and couldn't get refills. When we finally asked for refills for the table, she brought refills to everyone but the person who had asked. Totally empty glasses, we even ate the ice. When we realized his glass was still empty, we pretty much just busted out laughing. The server was hopelessly apathetic to the situation. Looking into her eyes for a shred of humanity (as clearly we were going to waste away and die without diet soda), I saw nothing but a void of indifference. The other server seemed cheerful and prompt, and people seated 20 minutes after us in her section got ALL their food before we did, and got drinks, refills, and so on.

That said, the food was great. The chicken kabobs were insanely flavorful and moist. It's just downright strange that the bad service there is getting so well known yet they don't fix it.

Now I see why there hasn't been peace in the Middle East for over 2000 years. If the service of Ya Hala is any indicator as to how slow a simple process can go then they will be fighting over there for a long time to come.
We were seated and after about 10 minutes someone finally came to take our order. 5 minutes after that, water was brought. At that time we ordered an appetizer and two entrees. Keep in mind that the restaurant was not packed but had a nice crowd. After 45 minutes without so much as an acknowledgement from the staff, we decided to get up and leave.
I can't tell you what the food is like although it smelled wonderful. I wish we wouldn't have had to wait an hour to get something. I don't care what the reviews say, when I go out, I want some at least decent service, not non-existant service.

Went for lunch with a friend. Ya Hala is well-known -- or will be eventually -- for having some of the best baklava in town. Crushes that overcrowded, grungy-feel Jerusalem to pieces. We ordered the ground lamb with hummus as an appetizer (comes with fresh pita bread), I ordered the shawarma beef sandwich and my friend had the kafta kabob. Order took approximately 25 minutes to arrive; I was up at the front desk at minute 22 asking "where is our appetizer?" I guess Ya Hala has a unique way of serving people, because everything came *all at once*. The ground lab and hummus was *amazing* -- it was spicy, but *just* right, not fiery. Same with my shawarma beef. My friend thought the kafta kabob was so-so. Once again, have to echo some of the sentiments I've read both here (and under the clear placemat under the table, newspaper reviewers) -- GREAT FOOD, but why does their service have to be so half-assed? (Disclaimer: when I asked about the appetizer, I was told everything was slow-roasted -- would have been nice to get informed that by our server however!)

I am so disappointed. The food at Ya Hala is awesome, some of the best middle eastern food in Denver. But the service is so laughable, I wont go back on principal alone. It's not like there were not any waitstaff around, they had at least two running the place, they didn't know how to wait on a table, or didn't care to learn. I wonder if they know that they would make more money if they did it right???? I feel sorry for the owners of Ya Hala because they could have a really good thing here.

They double charged my credit card. I found out later that they've done this to other people when telling them about it. Are well known for having terrible service. The food's ok, but's it's better as a restaurant to avoid as there are other middle eastern restaurants in denver equally good or better without the terrible service.
