I remember the guys from across the street. They definitely had their moments, but Video One has been transformed by the new owners. I can't believe this review thing still has stuff posted from two years ago. None of those people work

I totally agree. If you were going to borrow hundreds of dollars worth of something from me I sure would want some way to get a hold of you. I've been at Video One since September of last year and since the place got bought by Jeff ( who worked there for like seven years) all those people with bad attitudes were terminated. Plus you don't need a qwest phone line anymore. I gave them my social no problem, because I didn't have a credit card. I don't believe in credit, it's destroying peoples lives every day, especially in this country. AND THEY LET ME RENT. Blockbuster wouldn't even give me a chance to show how trustworthy I am. Yeah they don't open till 11 am so I have to go there after work, but they never cease to have the movie I am looking for, and they are knowledgeable about all kinds of movies from all over the world. They are individuals, and a credit to independent culture here on capitol hill.

I love Video One. They used to require a Qwest phone line but no longer. Their foreign selection is phenomenal and they also sell books at thrift store prices. There is no competition from Blockbuster because blockbuster only has corporate titles, Video one has real movies independent and mainstream at a reasonable price, they even rent video games and game consoles now and they don't charge ten dollars for everything like blockbuster. There is no confusion about when my stuff is due back and no hidden fees. I have rented here for almost 7 years, and I plan on renting here till I'm cold in my grave... and even then I'm sure I'll have some late fees : ) thanks guys

I also went to rent a movie tonight. I called and was told I only needed an ID and Credit card. So I went there and spent 15 minutes to pick out a movie. When I went to the counter they asked if I had a Qwest phone number to which I replied no. Then was asked for my SS# to which I replied "no way", I will not give it to rent a movie and promptly left after wasting my time. I thought that was what my credit card was for. I am one more person who will not be renting from them.

Well, I guess I'll begin by introducing myself. My name is Jason, and I've worked at Video One for five years now (almost to the day, in fact). We really appreciate all the positive reviews, so thanks a lot, guys and gals. However, the reason I'm writing now is to respond to all the D-bags who feel they've gotta go all internet-warrior on us.

First, our membership requirements are for our protection. Yes, protection from you. If they seem unreasonable, allow me to explain their neccessity: We're running a business on **Colfax** Avenue. Not only that, but a business that operates by renting inventory that we'd really like to have returned. Sorry, but after twenty-five years, we've learned our lessons the hard way.

Now, it is true that we begin a campaign of bitter, malicious harrassment against the punctuality-impaired. Oh, wait, what am I talking about?! Every day, we print a list of people whose movies are more than three days late. Assuming you may have simply forgotten, we'll issue friendly phone calls to remind you. But after about ten days, we figure that yes, you probably have no intention of returning our movies. That sort of treachery really does rub us wrong, so the calls will get less and less friendly with each passing day. Keep in mind, though, we do charge late fees, so when we call, it really is just to save you money. So don't get all butt-hurt, yeah?

Now, if you've got a movie that is of particular importance to us, and it becomes apparent that you're trying to snake us, then yes, I might just have to come and get it back. Don't worry, I won't hurt you. Hell, I should charge you the delivery fee (Oh, yeah, we deliver movies, too!) but I won't. I just want the freakin' movie back! Thankfully, I don't have to do that very often, and I'm pretty sure I know who wrote in whining about my complimentary pickup service. He was a tool.

It ain't the pay that keeps us here; we'd really love to cheer you up with a good movie. So stop by some time!

I never usually do this, but I have had such a negative experience with Video One that I wanted to share it. To start off, their customer service is abysmal and the organization of their store is so bad that it is almost impossible to find a movie. If you do ask for help you end up waiting for 10 minutes only to be treated rudely. However, if you do find a movie to rent and pay their ridiculous fees that is when the real fun begins. If you keep your video, even a few days past the due date, you will recieve call after call about returning it--all they while being charged ludicrous late fees. I failed to return a dvd for 4 days and was suprised to find an employee AT MY HOUSE to collect the movie. WTF? I would like to support local business, but I will return to Blockbuster from now own. DO NOT RENT FROM THESE GUYS.

i've been renting from video one for a few years now. sadly the video store business is dying due to net-flix, but net-flix will never be as great as video one. why? jason and bobby. these two guys put together have an endless flow of knowledge about film, and they both tend to have opposite tastes in film which is good. jason is into the big budget action flicks, samurai and kung-fu films, british gangster films, comedies of all sorts, etc. jason is probably the most popular video store clerk here for being loud, telling you if he thinks you movie s*cks (even when it really doesn't), and for his crazy stories. oh yeah, he talks about his car... a lot. bobby on the other hand is my favorite. his film knowledge of foreign, independent, cult, drama, horror, disturbing art films far surpasses that of anyone i've ever met.

the selection is pretty amazing for a small city like denver. the employee's picks are a must to stop and take a look at. you really will find some great never-heard of rare stuff there. upstairs is all vhs, which has been getting sold off slowly over the last year or two, but they still have all the good movies up there with a not for sale sticker on them. downstairs, the boom boom room. i never really go down there, but there is a dedicated customer base just for that floor alone.

and from other reviews that i have read about the customer service being terrible, you have to remember one thing... this is an independent business downtown, you're not going to get the "customer is always right" bulls**t treatment that you might get at blockbuster. to put it on bobby's words: "it's mostly over-priveledged white women who come in and demand to have their a**es licked by the servants behind the counter." from what i've heard from other friends of mine that rent there though, they feel the same way i do and that the service is beyond exceptional and these two really ill make your movie rental experience as fun and exciting as i could be.

They're always friendly when we're there. We don't rent movies often, maybe once every 6-8 weeks, but when we do; we're always impressed with how nice they are.

The Blockbuster board at the front of the store is hilarious. My husband had a bad experience at Blockbuster, his card would be on the board if he hadn't told the Blockbuster cashier she could keep it... it's just a big business looking to make big money. Video One isn't like that. We can ask the staff their opinion of a movie and they give us their honest opinion. We give recommendations back and forth.

The DVDs are in really good shape, no scratches. That's impressive considering some of the cases are in really bad shape. And they check the DVD before you leave the store to make sure it's acceptable.

Lara L's previous review was right-on. Video One has an excellent selection for a brick-and-mortar video store, though they have begun to get rid of older films, and their prices are lower than at Blockbuster. However, their service is uniformly rude. They don't pay attention to detail, and their training of staff is abysmal.

For example, they store does not bother to post prices in the store, and not all employees are familiar with the discount that is supposed to be offered on older (or "classic") films. To make things worse, if a customer brings an error to the salesman's attention, the usual response is to snipe back at the customer.

Another example is this: the store evidently offered "special" rentals for $1.50 on some movies a number of years back. When the promotion ended, they did not bother to take off the stickers advertising the $1.50 rate. When I rented one of these films and asked why I wasn't getting the advertised rate, they were very rude and condescending.

Another problem is caused by management's insistence on charging nuisance fees, combined with the staff's slacker attitude. Unless a movie is returned at least 24 hours before it is due, the staff is likely to fail to record its return until after the due date, but management still insists on charging a "late" fee, and they basically call you a liar if you try to set things straight.

I could go on, but the general point should be clear: Netflix, here I come.

Yes, I admit that Video One is the best in Denver. If you have a Valid Credit card and ID there is no problem getting a membership. If you don't then you have no business renting movies anyway. They are very professional. They resurface every DVD before renting it to you so you never take home a damaged DVD that doesn't play. They even ordered in a entire TV series so I could rent it one time. They truly go above and beyond.

Although I have others rave about this video store, my one experience there was horrible. I stood in line for over 15 minutes to be greeted by a rude cashier at the end of my wait. There seems to be a terrific selection of videos at reasonable rental prices however I was not allowed to rent any of the videos because I do not have a Qwest phone line. The service was rude and inexcusable; I will not rent videos from there. I'd rather give my money to the Blockbuster chain than support a company that treats its customers so rudely.
