Since 1927, loyalists have flocked to this venerable Lakewood spa touting steam baths, soap scrubs, massages, and whirlpool Jacuzzis.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Sauna Room - Rejuvenate in the hot rock room, a stress-relieving sauna utilizing large ovens filled with heated rocks and just a spray of water to create intensely dry heat.
  2. Aromatherapy - The steam room is fragranced with eucalyptus oil to maximize relaxation and easy breathing.
  3. The Extras - There are separate days for men and women. On the third Sunday evening of every month there is a ladies-only pamper session.

Beware

by L B.

I ended my ten year association with Lake Steam Baths after being wrongly accused of behavior I did not commit. The manager took someone's outrageous story about my "touching" myself inappropriately. It was probably the most offensive thing that has happened in my life thus far.

They did, however, invite me back. Go figure. Someone there had way too much steam.

Creepy but nice

by Fred L.

Despite the old-world feel to Lake Steam, there's a reason why a large sign reading "We Consider Ourself a Family Spa. Please report any misconduct." is prominently posted in the common area. Why? Because of the predominately gay subculture that comes to Lake Steam on men's days. It makes it quite uncomfortable for us who go for legitimate reasons and not for hook-ups to enjoy it more. But what can be done, really? You can politely ask the guys in the steam room across from you to, um, separate while you're in there. You can clear your throat and point to the posted rule about no body contact. Or you can just ignore it and hope the city health inspector makes a surprise visit. This happens at Lake Steam. Too bad, because it's a decent idea.

It is 12/07 and the admission price is now $14.00.
Definitely needs a good scrub outside and especially
inside all around.Of course the price will go up to keep it cleaner.
A real dated and unkempt place. Come on and do it right.
Well, good luck, with that task.

I suggest the next time that you are in Las Vegas check out the hotel spa's there for only $20 - $25, then you'll know that you experenced a real clean health spa !

Inexpensive Massage

by Nina D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,593

The one thing you need to know about this place is that clothing is not allowed in the spa or massage rooms! I booked a massage for a few friends without realizing this one important fact. The massage was less than $30 for an hour, although it wasn't the greatest massage ever. You can also go to the sauna or steam room for $8 without getting a massage.

Nice but creepy

by Darara

"We Consider Lake Steam to be a Family Spa. Please report any misconduct." So says a sign hanging prominently in the common area at Lake Steam. And, on men's days, you can see why. Despite its old-world appearance, this spa seems to be a market for gay dudes looking to hook up. It makes it quite uncomfortable for legitimate users to enjoy the services while disturbing behavior occurs a few feet away. The management needs to enforce its rules--especially the one about "no body contact"--and make it a straight-friendly spa. I recommend Sunday mornings early (6:00), when old-school heat therapy takes place before the annoying presence of the gay culture enters. Here's hoping Lake Steam gets its act together the rest of the time.

Pros: Price, spaciousness, sauna

Cons: gay subculture (men's days), inconsistent heat

Old Fashioned Spritz

by Bangles_Galore

This spa is unlike any I've ever been to and has it's own special charm. One must go on either the all men or all women days of the week - I'm a Monday & Thursday gal. I love the price ($9.50) that allows you to stay as long as you want. The steam room with eucalyptus oil is a huge help in the cold and dry Denver winters. The hot tub is big, roomy and hot. I usually have one of the gals that do the body scrubs do their thing (for additional $ - they are independent contractors). You get your locker, your sheet, your tiny handtowel, and away you go. Massage appointments are available. I've not tried the Massage therapy services, the body scrubs are like a quick all over 15 minute massage that feels great and exfoliates at the same time.

Pros: affordable price, central location

Cons: needs rennovation, new carpet would help
