My Cherry Hills friends make a hobby of discovering the best Denver Docs and Dr. Al is their "Psychologist of Choice". They say he's the right balance of intuition and gutsiness. He's saved many a marriage in our neighborhood. They told me, "If you want to change, he's your man."

My neighbor Sam doesn't respect therapists because according to him, they are mostly warm-fuzzy wimps. The highest recommendation I can give Dr. Al is that Sam went back to see him a second time. When I asked why, Sam said, "I can tell when a guy has something worthwhile to say and doesn't waste my time."

I was intrigued...so I thought I would give him a try. I was in therapy before for several years with two different therapists. It was a complete waste of time. Their answers to my concerns were vague and non-committal. Sam told me about Dr. Al's direct feedback and no-nonsense approach. I was skeptical, but I signed up for a couple of sessions anyway.

At my first session, I gave Dr. Al some background from my past, but he didn't seem to need much. Instead, he focused on what the issues were for me in the present. He gave me ideas I had never thought of. He explained them in a way that had meaning and made sense. I still agree with Sam that most therapists are warm-fuzzy wimps. But this guy is different.

On my second session with Dr. Al, I brought up some issues from my past (loss of parent at a young age). I wanted to know how it had affected me and how it will affect me in the future. He told me, "You've resolved much of your parent loss. For you, a more pressing issue is your sister's breakdown and her giving up on life." He answered with striking detail and clarity and pointed out the deeper questions I wasn't even aware of. He didn't stop there. He told me what to do to make a shift if I was willing to face up to it.

I was blown away. I learned more about myself in two sessions than I had in two years working with my previous therapists.

Pros:
Highly intuitive and compassionate.
Interactive and responsive with lots of feedback.
.
Cons:
None.

I took my seriously disturbed husband to see him and it was a fiasco. Al wanted to work on our marital communication issues and he decided to help the husband come out of the closet and to help us transition out of our marriage. My shell shock was labeled hypo mania after two visits. He decided that hedidn't believe me when I told him the following...

My husband was a sex addict with a history of domestic violence and drunk driving who was starting to become interested in children. He was into drugs, violent sex, told me he had drugged and raped young men and women and was embezzling from his company, and he was about to lose his job, and he was eating Viagra like m&m's and slathering himself in gel testosterone and abusing prescription meds.

I was a poster child for trauma and PTSD trying to manage damage control as best I knew how at that time in life - which wasn't great. We needed serious help and he said he was up to the job. He was in over his head and made things much worse. He said he was an expert - eventually I understood he was an "expert" in everything. But the self perception wasn't born out in his professional environment or accomplishments. I had no experience in selecting a therapist and he said he could help.

He told me I was delusional and destructive when I called him after my husband tried to choke me in our car after our second therapy session with the good doctor.

He contributed to my husbands problems and pandered to a sick man with money to pay for what he wanted to hear.
