I regularly visit the Bookworm because of their huge selection. I know I can count on the staff to be knowledgeable of their stock despite the fact that they have thousands of books and the stock changes daily. That's pretty impressive. I can also say that I've never been treated rudely by their staff. I do agree it is a little unclear about how to turn in the books and how long you'll have to wait, but those things don't bug me. I take issue with the reviewer named Anne O. wherein she said she was sure of how the employee would behave if the tables were turned and also that all the good reviews are written by employees. I assure every reader, I am a customer with no hidden agenda in favor of the Bookworm. And the reviewer who said chains haver a better grasp on customer service must not shop at King Soopers or Safeway, where I am ignored and talked over by checkers and baggers regularly. And on top of that, chains are all adopting this highly irritating new thing with asking for donations for every charity out there, year round. Give me a small, locally owned business every time.

I agree with other reviewers that the store workers have poor customer service, which is a shame as I know that the family who owns the store is very nice. I hope they read this and ask their workers to have higher standards. Once, I couldn't find the price in a book because it was written in very light pencil, and I have eyesight problems. I asked the clerk what the price was, and without speaking, she opened to the first page, pointed abruptly, and then just stood there without saying anything (I still could not decipher the price without a verbal indication) and looking at me like I was stupid. Other times, the clerks have become very upset if I set my book donations down in a manner that does not correspond to their system, though actually, it appears as though everything is very much in disarray. Several other times, the clerks have stated that it will take them "a while" to sort through my books, and sneer at you if you stand nearby while they do so, without providing and polite information about the time frame. I love the selection of the store but now avoid going there because it is so unpleasant to deal with their staff. I recommend Red Letter Books on Pearl St. if you are looking for similar selection without such a rude staff.

While the customer service is typical of Boulder (arrogant - too good to be here attitude), I do find their trade policy the best around, so I trade there. I also find their selection to be the best around. Most used book stores only give you a percent of trade credit on the books you buy - in other words, you still have to pay for part of the book you buy - you can't get a book for trade - you still have to pay something out of pocket, even though they've taken your books. Not so with the Bookworm. So it's the best in my opinion. I just deal with the attitudes. I've been in Boulder over 20 years now; it's sad, but I expect to be treated like crap by local businesses. The big chains know how to train their people better, but you have to pay an arm and a leg to get treated well.

I love Bookworm. For a booklover this bookstore is a sort of heavenly playground...you walk in and you fall in love. And I have been going there for years. In the "newer" location they added a cafe and they organized so that their thousands and thousands of books are easier to browse through. Plan on spending hours because there is that much to explore. I have always received excellent customer service. And "no $ for books"? Oh well. Maybe if you wanted to liquidate your books you could do it somewhere else. If you are a reader this is a place to trade books for more books...and obviously a "Green" alternative to new bookstores. Just read used books! I think you need to be independent enough to explore on your own and know your ABCs...so you can find your 'author's last name'. Come on! Who needs directions in a bookstore? Just follow your nose. Bookworm is a fun place to shop for books. The only question is "Do I have enough room on my shelf at home for more?"

I LOVE the Bookworm in Boulder. I go there about once a week. The staff has NEVER been anything but courteous and polite. They are very helpful when I have questions and often take the time to lead me right where I need to go. I have found many of my books for class there for a fraction of the bookstore price.
If a reviewer below thinks they are rude then I'm sure the reviewer was probably rude first. I've worked a lot of customer service in Boulder and dealt with people like them too. Sometimes you get tired of being nice to jerks.
All of that aside, the Bookworm is a wonderful establishment with great books, a comfortable environment and good prices. They also have helpful sales people, interesting first editions and lots of space.
I adore the Bookworm and will continue to trade and buy my books there.

I really like the way the sections are organized, and have always been able to find something I like. For the many years I've been going, I've always had good experiences there. The staff is friendly (often very busy) and helpful, and I've racked up a big credit there, which never expires. Nice. Also, now they have a little cafe where I can sit and hang out while they're going through any books I've brought. The decor is nothing to write home about (very utilitarian), which is the only reason I haven't rated it "world class."

I was excited when I walked in and saw the wide selection of books. Unfortunately, the experience turned sour there, as no information regarding store policies is posted anywhere, and, being within earshot of another customer requesting the policy, I was shocked as to how surly and unnecessarily rude the woman at the counter was.

When trying to return books, I was harshly told I had to put them in a basket (again, not posted and not even remotely obvious). I was treated like an idiot for not understanding their ambiguous policies, told to wait 15 minutes, then completely ignored for half an hour while they continuously stopped working on my books.

As great as a place this could be, the unpleasant demeanor made me feel unwelcome and completely killed any desire I had to ever return or spend any money on this place.

I will not give retail employees slack. Their job IS customer service, it was on the job description, there was no secret that their job IS to give good customer service. With that said, the Bookworm employees need to read their job description. The employees were rude, they did talk about their customers in a condescending manner within earshot of the customers and their policies on buying/trading books is not posted nor clarified. I have not had the money issue but I can bet if I went back, (which you would have to pull out my finger nails to get me to go back to that dump), if I gave them 2 $10 dollar bills for $30 in books I am positive the same rude people that work there would tell me the same thing they did the other post and NOT be nice about it. Give them some slack? I think not....they chose that job they need to find another job if they cannot provide decent customer service. And yes, the books are overpriced and thrown about. I will never go back. Obviously the owner cares about as little about their business as their employees care about customer service. Finally, one more thing...the folks that gave glowing responses on this post are probably the same employees that work at this dump and give grief to the customers.

Maybe, being that I tend to be a friendly person, tend to ask questions first - make assumptions later, I don't see what you all see.

But I LOVE the book worm. Even now that I've moved to Broomfield, i still do my used book shopping at BookWorm, just make fewer trips.

I tend to find new authors I like. I tend to find copies of the "hot books" on a fairly regular basis (75% of the time for say Christopher Moore or Wicked as examples), and i often find older stuff I'm looking for on about a 50% basis.

Just know it is not an *antique* type book store, just good ol' used paperbacks, mostly.

Huge selection. Prices vary--usually half of original list price (fairly standard for used book stores).

Regarding what the one reviewer said about the "Nice try" comment:
You'd be shocked at how often people try to pull the old "I gave you $50" when they really only handed over $40 or something. The clerk should have just pointed out the error and settled things up without the comment, however, these people get hit with that trick on almost a daily basis. Having worked in retail during my college years, I know how ticked off that can make you the 3rd, or 4th time someone tries that in a week.

People in general need to cut the retail folks some slack.

There are more reasons to keep buying books here than the service. My own personal experiences with the owners and others have been nothing but pleasing and gratifying. Everyone has a tough day here and there. Lets face it, your there to buy a book or two and maybe pass some of your hard earned cash over to a local shop. Even if the service was bad at least your keeping your money in town. My only problem these days is how to do more of that! I won't name names but my cash is better spent with this small business than the big boys with the fancy, expensive, out of town coffee.
Give them another try. The selection is there, the prices are just right and don't forget to give them the old, "Have a good day"
Bet you'll get one back!

Update- 8/24/08 I have never worked here

They carry a lot of books, but they are pricey IMO. They also also have a trade-only policy even though they advertise as a used book buyer (only rare first editions, they said when asked). I wasn't aware of the policy when I first brought a pile of books in. When they told me they wouldn't give me cash for my pile, only trade, I said "no thanks, I'll just keep them", they got all flustered and rude and said that my books had been put in a big pile to be shelved. They told me they would have to do a lot of work to dig them out. (Well then, why did you mix them up with other peoples books)?!? Now I refuse to give them any cash payments for their books if they're unwilling to do the same for me. I only do trades. And I do some reluctantly because their attitude stinks! On another occassion, I was standing at the front counter and overheard one clerk telling the other how stupid their customers were because they didn't know about the trade-only policy. So apparantly other people have had the same misunderstading and staff got flustered cause they had to dig the books out. Maybe the advertisements are misleading? Maybe they need to work on communication skills?

I agree with the other review that this store has a very good selection. Unfortunately that is where the positive customer service ends. I went to purchase my books with cash, the bill amounted to a little over $27.00 for 3 paperbacks and 2 hardbacks. I handed the clerk (or store owner) what I thought was a $20 and a $10. The clerk became sarcastic stating, "I cannot make change with this." I inquired why not still thinking I had provided $30. She was very condescending in pointing out that I had only given her $20. She then added, "Nice Try." Nice Try?!!! I am not a thief and there are certainly better customer service ways of handling that situation other than accusing your customers of deception. If that person was a clerk she should be fired or at the very least reprimanded. I am sure she has been rude to others with that attitude. And if that person was the store owner shame on her, that is no way to treat nor retain customers. I was offended but purchased the books using my credit card. The last thing I wanted to do was leave without a purchase thereby allowing the rude person behind the counter to think I would try to steal merchandise from their store. The books are a bit over priced when compared to other bookstores in the Denver Metro Area, the lighting is bad and the shelves are messy. I could have lived with the lighting and the messy shelves but never poor customer service. I will not be returning nor recommending this store to others.

As I named it, the best used bookstore in town. Ever sinced they changed location to a larger building, the bookworm just gets better. They've added a small coffee bar in there, but you don't go to this place for the coffee; their collection of used books is fun to browse.

You can find whatever book you are looking for at the book worm. You will pay about 1/2 of retail and if you turn it back in when you are finished, they will pay you 1/4 of retail. Not a bad deal. Their selection is huge and they also have a great selection of childrens books. The lighting could be improved.
