They have amazing food in here. I love their salads, because they always use fresh vegetables. I love this place because they pamper their customers.

What a wonderful place to be lost in at. I can see why there are people willing to wait for a table in this place. Their salads are delicious and the drinks are just amazing.

We were party of 7 meeting for Tuesday evening of fun. I had heard alot about the history of the place and looked forward to being with friends. First, I will say the food was great. Probably the best 'hamburger' I've ever had. That's where it ends. The service was very slow. The pricing was too expensive. And the drinks were suspect. One of the members of our party said his margarita tasted like soda. The wine glasses appeared to be less than 4 oz and pricey for house wine. The owner was on-site and when asked casually a question about getting drinks, she rudely informed me I would have to wait for my waitress. While we had a fun night with friends, I would not return for the experience.

I've read many rave reviews of this place, and being very close to us we wanted to try it. I have to say I was pretty disappointed. The sugar steak was pretty tough and not very flavorful. The vegetables were unpeeled carrots that were barely cooked, and some brown broccoli. My wife's salmon tasted farmed and not very fresh. The twice-baked potato was pretty good though. Service was slow despite it being a Wednesday night, and worst of all she forgot our 5-year-old's grilled cheese sandwich. Not until she came out to ask how our food was did she say "Oh, the cook must have forgotten it!" like it wasn't her job. In the end he loved the grilled cheese, but that was the highlight of the evening.

Maybe it was the coupon we used or something, but we won't be going back with or without a coupon. The atmosphere had potential, though it's starting to seem kind of seedy.

We were looking for a steakhouse to take out-of-town guests - nothing was available downtown so the search was expanded - we came across several reviews and decided to try this out-of-the-way gem - Boy, are we glad we did! A distinctive looking round-octagon shaped building right on Colfax, just west of Colorado belies the great ambiance and food you will find inside.

Tastefully decorated with cozy tables for 4 (large groups must arrange ahead of time as they do not have tables to seat parties larger than 6). Full bar service, pages and pages of Steaks, Chicken and Fish and Desserts to die for! Large, filling portions, moderately priced averaging $20-25/plate, salad and veggie included. Desserts homemade on premises. Service was prompt and available when needed, staff was very knowledgeable about the menu offerings, suggestions taken made for excellent choices, steaks cooked to perfection.

Lastly, I must comment on the music - 30's & 40's Big Band, Swing and Jazz including Sinatra, Dorsey, Goodman, Ellington, Basie and more - many were USO and live radio recordings - a perfect compliment to a perfect evening. We are already planning a return visit.

Cons: None to think of...

Good to know that I can count on this place to have consistantly good service and not have to worry about it being slow or off.

Okay...we live in Denver and are surrounded by a million steakhouses. BUT...that shouldn't prevent you from giving Bastien's a try. This is one of the funkiest little places you'll find, and the Sugar Steaks (yes, really...it's a steak rubbed down in sugar) is wonderful!!

As soon as you walk in you get the feeling that time has stood still! The decor is so very retro but it's great! It's hard to put into words, but when you step in you'll get it.

The price is another plus. You won't fork over an arm and a leg to get a full meal, including a delightful salad in addition to your meat course. The bar is fully stocked as well, so ask for a cosmo (or something retro...just work with the atmosphere!) and enjoy.

You would not know it driving down colfax and from the outsite of the building, but this Steakhouse is a GEM in the Denver area.

From the outside of this octagon shaped building I would have NEVER have dined there, but a freind referred us to Bastien's over a year ago and now this is our favorite Steakhouse hangout...We love the Steak Bryan and the Sugar Steak.

This is a place to try only once and you'll either love it or hate it, we LOVE it!

I walked in to the bar area to sit at the bar, "I was lucky no one was smoking" to find a relaxing place to unwind. I ordered iced tea and was served freshly brewed tea that actually tasted like tea. The lady taking my order was jovial as were the other two customers present, giving the place a "Cheers" feel. When my soup came out it tasted so good i had to gobble it down. I forget exactly what it was called but cream and potatoes were the major ingredients. It would have been great by itself as a larger serving in the winter. The steak came out next. They called it a sugar steak and it was perfect, just on the rare side of medium rare, the sugar "caramelized" on the outside sealed the juices in and captured the flavor. I ate the meal in an unhurried state and bypassed the desert menu of fresh pies for fear of exploding. the whole experience was pleasurable. As i left the waitress told me to come back again and sounded as though she meant it. All in all I felt my business was appreciated for a change and I will have to plan a trip back that way again.

Whwer to eat a lot of fabulous food at a really reasonable price and the decor makes it more fun along with the "feels like family" atmosphere and service.

Bastien's is one of my absolute favorite places to dine in Denver. I've lived here for 13 years and Bastien's has always been a staple for me. This place is not for snobs or idiots that would rather eat at Chili's (see review 2nd after this one). This place is not trying to be anything but what it is- a great steak house with brilliant service, an incredible Lemoncello cocktail and the type of ambiance no chain restaurant could EVER pull off. Our service has never been short of EXCELLENT. The escargot is a favorite of mine, as is the steak with craw fish and sauce. As the GM of a busy Larimer Square restaurant, I know great service, and I know great food, and obviously, I cannot say enough about this place. Drop your pretension and save some bucks at this wonderful and amazingly affordable restaurant. The aforementioned idiot who also mentioned they expected to see a call girl or ex-con is right- and that's one of the reasons this restaurant is a Colfax gem! Bastien's has been around for a long time for a reason, so go check it out- I hope you'll find it to be the wonderful destination I know it is. Cheers to Eric and all the staff!!!!

After passing by many of times, my curiosity got the best of me, and I stopped in for dinner.
WOW! Right out of the gate I know I had found a new staple. The ambiance draws you in right away.
After drooling over the menu, for quite some time, I finally decided to try the house special and get the Sugar Steak. A NY strip with a delicious caramelized glaze, and good sized at that! I complemented the steak with the garlic mashed potatoes. After dinner I had to indulge in one of there famous desserts. The skillet pie came highly recommended, I chose the apple. What a great finishing touch!
The wait staff was extremely friendly and made me feel right at home. Long story short Bastien's was a great find and i would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great meal and comfortable atmosphere!

Had a great pizza at Bastien's. It was a flat square vegetarian pizza. Very good, the salad came with the restaurants own dressing which was low fat. The bread sticks were also very good and came with pizza sauce. The service was very quick and friendly.

Building is old and tired, look's horrible from the street (colfax) inside is old & dingy, some 40's theme with dust bunnys galore. Bar is somthing you see in an ex con movie looks wise. I expected to see a "Call Girl" with a john in the corner any second. Had it not been recommended we would have walked out as soon as we walked in. Service depends, 60% is fair-good, 40% is bad-horrible. Even with a reservation you will not be seated promptly. I ordered my steak med. rare stress on the rare, it came med. well done, the host or waiter or whoever he is was very rude, arguing with me that it was a perfect med. rare steak, and basically I did'nt know what I was talking about. Other time's he's nice as can be, unless you say something negative about any of the food, like the sour tasting steak I had to turn back to the kitchen today. Waitstaff is usually not very friendly, and hard to get over to the table, the bus boy was great. There are 3 storys, and depending on where you sit, you could be looking at other customer's feet, booth tables are very small with the large plates & if multiple people are dining with you. Food is 80% good, the mignon is usually very yummy (except for the sour taste this time, and being overcooked twice) Sugar Steak... I dont understand the hype, it was ok, not something to order more then once a year, I would rather take a Chili's Ribeye to a Sugar Steak anyday. A nice vegi combo come's with every meal, twice baked potato is lacking, usually mashed is good, they do have wonderful home made almost yard stick long breaksticks with seasoned dipping butter. Deserts are generally good, except for the sponge cake one which was very dry, the whip cream and fruit topping did nothing to help.
Overall I like the food, dislike the building look in/outside, they need to update and CLEAN, and most all the waitstaff is rude, slow, and has no reserve about giving an attitude to, or yelling at it's customers. Food pricing is average, drinks are overpriced.

The idea that this is the best brunch in Denver is ridiculous. The food at Bastien's was acceptable, nothing more, and anybody who thinks it's better than Le Central or Lucille's is out of their mind. San Antonio omlette was topped with jarred salsa, not homemade. Potatoes were overcooked. Coffee was blah. Waitress acted like we were putting her out. Just average.

My fiancee and I were visiting Denver and had decided we really wanted a steak for dinner. We checked out City Search ... Bastiens was on the list ... had good reviews ... but we were both on the fence about whether it sounded good enough to go. After some debating ... we went.
From the outside ... my first thought was this place is going to be a joke ... it looks like a very old, unkempt, building. When we walked inside we were pleasantly surprised. It was definitely nicer than the outside. The wood bar, when you first walk in, is where we made our home for the night. The bartender ... I wish I could remember his name ... was excellent. Timely, attentive, friendly service.
We ordered steaks ... I had the special ... a ny strip steak with gorgonzola and chiant reduction ... amazing!!!! My fiancee had the sugar steak. I know ... sugar and steak sound like a terrible combination, but it was fantastic. A perfectly cooked, medium rare ny strip, with a hint of sweet. My fiancee and I both agreed it was the best steak we have probably ever had.
The atmosphere is very relaxed with air of comfort from family and friends.
The dessert was only ok, but everything else was 5 star without the 5 star price.

Darn near everything on the menu (although I haven't sampled it all, yet) is a taste treat. The signature sugar steak is a wonderful medley of taste and texture - juicy and tender throughout. The monthly specials are not to be missed as they are unique and tasty. Although the exterior silhouette of the building is low, the interior is surprisingly open and spacious. The outdoor patio is unexpectedly cozy thanks to branches and miniature lights woven through the wrought iron. In spite of being located just off Colfax, the patio is nicely intimate. The staff (many of whom are the children or grandchildren of the founder) are knowledgable and friendly. If you don't know what to try, just ask! The holiday meals and special occasion menus are fantastic. Bastiens is our first choice for a special night out.

Bastien's is a Denver treasure - you can't tell it from the outside, which makes it all the more charming. The service was excellent, the sugar steak is out-of-this-world. Also worth trying are the Black Russian cake and the appetizer gnocchi. Everything we had at Bastien's was great!

Don't believe the hype! These People Who say this place is the best have either never dined out or ate some place else. The Only positive aspect about this restuarant is the outside appearance would make you think dumpy diner, But the inside has that pleasantly suprising 1930,s/40,s time warp. My boyfriend & I kept reading the wonderful dining reviews about this place, so on a whim decided to give it a try, especially because we are both steak connoisseurs of Steaks & do not like franchises. The service was extremely slow. My 2nd cocktail was completely a different drink mixture from the 1st,in which I order the exact same beverage. My boyfriend ordered a ribeye. I ordered a T-bone. Both of us ordered medium rare. His steak was unbelievable bland. My steak needed a chainsaw to cut & overcooked. The salads were chintzy & side dishes were absolute waste of space on our plates. Zero flavor. Too bad, we really had hope for this joint, after all the raving hype. This dining establishment must have bribed these critics. It's the ONLY explanation I can think of, because when we dined at bastiens around thedinner time hours, It wasn't empty, but there was only 5 other tables with patrons. SAVE YOUR TIME & MONEY

I just went to Bastien's this weekend for a birthday party based on the results I had seen here at citysearch. I have to give it my highest rating. Having moved here from Chicago, I've been looking for a quality resturant to take guests, business associates, etc. I will certainly be back. Everything the whole night was perfect. The staff went out of their way to accomdate our party of 7 in their small enviroment. The service was good, what you would expect from a quality resturant.

The food, to be sure, was simply amazing. We all enjoyed every meal we had and sampled some of the other food to just have a taste. From the Escargot to the house speciality, Sugar Steak to the little Breadsticks on the table. Hmm... Great. The woman next to me got a chicken dish wrapped in Proscutto, which I began asking her if she'd like to trade for my Sugar Steak. Best Chicken Dish I've ever had. Sugar Steak was good, very tender for a cut of meat not known for it's tenderness.

I've been to major Steak Houses around the US and I'd have to say that Bastien can compete with any of them at a fraction of the cost.

Pros: Great atmosphere, Top notch food, Quality Service, Full Bar.

Cons: Bathrooms small, Parking can get tricky later at night.

After seeing the review in the Rocky Mountian News a few weeks ago we headed down to Bastien's to check out the place. It was one of the best times we have had in a long time. No wonder the writer for the paper gave them a B+. The place was very busy the night we went (a Saturday night) and we were told by the host it was because of the piece in the paper. We stared out with veal stuffed mushrooms and the shrimp in overcoats, both were yummy!! Surprisingly soup or salad come with your meal. A wonderful pear vinergett and homemade 1000 island on the salad. The Sugar steak and the Trout Stack are both must tries. Topping off the evening was a great dessert of Apple pie and icecream on a hot skillet with a wonderful sauce. The service was great and the host even presented us with a rose at the end of the meal. We have since been back 2 more time!! Fried Chicke and Liver and onions!!! Be sure to try a Martini in their crome martini glasses!! Oh yea the wine list is small but priced great!! Put this one on your list of places to try, you won't be sorry.

My first and last visit to Bastiens' was for a 40th Birthday dinner was a horrible start to what was suppose to be a joyful night. After calling ahead 8:30 PM to ensure there was not a wait, we arrived as a party of six five minutes later. It was 5 minutes later when they were able to find the host (if you can call him that. He was nothing but rude) appeared to tell us that it would take a few minutes to get us a table as they had to clear a table and put tables together to accomodate a party of 6 (typically not a problem for a non-busy restaurant. In looking around the restuarant, there were only 4 tables that had patron's with the rest of the restaurant completely empty). The restuarant was completely filled with smoke as though the ventilation system had backed up on them making for a bar like atmosphere. After waiting for 15 minutes in a deserted restaurant, an inquiry was made about how much longer it would take. The "host" appeared irritated about the inquiry and told me that it would be just a few minutes that they would let us know if we would just be patient and go wait. After waiting another 10 minutes, one of the individuals in my party went to look to see if we would be seated and before he could inquire, the host started yelling at him that he would let him know when our table was ready and to quit bothering him. He then followed the inquirer to the bar and began getting louder and making verbal accusations. Telling the birthday individual that she was being impatient, rude and cussing at him. Needless to say, we ended up leaving the restaurant after being verbally assaulted and waiting for 30 minutes for a table) and went to another Steak House not filled with attitude. I guess the addage is true, "You get what you pay for". If you want a cheap, un-pleasant environment with a queeny hosts with attitude then this is your place. If you want a pleasant environment, good food and great service check out "Texas Roadhouse".

My steak was so good, I can't wait to go back!!!! I had the steak topped with spinach and blue cheese, yum.........also had a flirtini as a cocktail was very good. We went here for a friends 29th B-day, it is not exactly a restaurant for young people but it was so good who cares. Also the desserts are to die for, leave room for some pie.

Growing up in this neighborhood, I saw this as a "joint" and must say 50 yrs later, it looks exactly the same as it did then. I wouldnt let that put you off. This place is the "sleeper" steakhouse in town. The NY Strip Sugar Steak is terrific, but the hot skillet deserts are to absoluty die for. My buddies and I do "Carnivorus Night" here and practicaly have to waddle out. We cant seem to NOT get or even share the desert.
I'm told they have a great breakfast.
Food Snob says enjoy this spot, but lets keep it amoung ourselves.

I've been a regular at Bastiens for over a year now and the food has been consistently fabulous, particularly the sugar steak. The service is outstanding in an atmosphere that always makes you look forward to another visit. Their recently remodeled patio is my favorite setting to enjoy happy hour while listening to light music. This is an ideal place for those with an appreciation for the perfect neighborhood-eating place.

We found the staff to be very friendly, personable and efficient. Fabulous breadsticks on the table. A pitcher of water with lemon served and refilled promptly. Good salad. Mediocre steak. Hamburger overcooked. Enjoyed the ambiance. Off street parking.

We went for Sunday breakfast at 9:30 am with our two young kids. We were welcomed like family both by the staff and by the regulars. The service was fast and friendly, and the kids were made comfortable with real sippy cups and yummy breakfast bread sticks/butter. The menu has plenty to choose from and the portions are large. The decor is funky (fish tanks, christmas trees, 80's music), and the tables are well-spaced and comfortable. The food is not gourmet, but stick-to-your-ribs comfort food and certainly welcome after a late Saturday night out. All around, a solid breakfast that we will go back for.

What a deal. Just had the early bird special at Bastien's ( 3pm to 7pm) $20. for 2 is a deal!! We had a choice of 10 different items, we chose the trout and the chicken with white beans and spinach. The diners came with soup or salad and for $3. more we got one of their great desserts ( hot apple skillet!!!) and for $3. more you get a glass of wonderful red or white wine. So for $29.00 we had a dinner that whould have cost at least $60 bucks. Thanks Bastiens's for the great deal and great meal!! The patio is one of the greatest on Colfax !!

The wine list here has got to be the most reasonal in town, a bottle of wine for 15.00 is a sure deal. Be sure to check them out you'll love the retro feel of the place. The Happy hour Monday- thurday is great 2 for one from 3-9 pm.

I eat here at least once a month mainly because the food is great and the price is very good. They have a monthly special that is always interesting and usually quite delicious and it's a deal because it comes with any of their housemade desserts which by themselves are worth the trip. The people go out of their way to make me feel extra special (and I notice they treat every one like that)- not like just your average joe. It's nice that after the third visit or so they recognized me and now greet me by name! I love this place so go try it and let me know if you agree!

I disagree with the last review dated 5-28-04. And I would like to ask why that reviewer keeps going back if it is so "below average"? I have never had anything but pleasant and attractive servers, most young and certainly none "two toothed". But aside from that my friend and I have tried different things across the menu and always left happy and full. The food ranges from homecookin' to unusual (such as the chicken dish with the veggies and sauce) but is always fresh, attractively prepared and tasty. I strongly recommend this to anyone seeking delicious food. You won't be disappointed.

You have to try this place. Not fancy, just good food and a great price. the wine list is not long but it is prices well and has some outstanding wines on it for the price ( $20.00) the steaks are great and the trout is a must try. The menu features a pull out special list, you won't go wrong ording from it. the place could use some new carpet ( or a cleaning) but it's very retro and comfortable. If your an Atkins person they can help you out with protien!! Sesserts are wonderful and the Martini's served "Ice" cold in a stainless steel "up" glass, that keeps it cold to the last sip!! Put them on your list of places to visit, you'll go back again and again like we have!!

We eat here about once a month. The food is very good and the prices are very reasonable. We have tried many of the items on the menu and have never had anything that wasn't first rate. It would be interesting to see all the reviews left by the people that gave this place an unacceptable review. Are they happy anywhere? Perhaps they feel if you didn't pay an arm and a leg it wasn't good enough for them. I hope they stay away, that leaves more for me.

No, I won't say that it's the best steak in town, but it is not bad by any stretch of the imagination. I've read several of the bad reviews here and I must say that I my experience was nothing like what has been written. The steak was above average, not the greatest cut of meat, but well prepared. The sides were excellent and I truly love the decor - there's something about it that is just cool - not fancy, but nice, nonetheless. Also, the wait staff was fun and did a great job - I'll be back... I'd say give it a try!

We have been going to Bastien's for about two years now and its the best little restaurant we've found since moving to the Denver area. They do the traditional steaks (filets, N.Y. prime rib, etc.) in the traditional ways but what I love are the creative and tasty specials they come up with using steaks, etc. And if you are not in the mood for steak, they have lots of other things to choose from, very reasonably priced. The steaks are a little pricey but worth it because they are cooked they way I order them and are also juicy and tender. Try the Steak David. You won't regret it.

We had a very pleasant dining experience at Bastiens a couple of weeks ago. We got them off Citysearch and gave them a try. The food and service was very good. We found the surroundings very clean and attractive. There were fresh flowers on the table and the music selection was superb. We had fried tomatoes to start with and they were very different from the usual appetizer and very good. The meals were served with soup or sald (we had one of each. The soup was homemade and very rich and I had the pecan vinagrette on my salad which was great!) I had the snapper and my friend had the monthly steak specail which came with dessert. We had a skillet pie which was outstanding. Thanks Citysearch. We found a new favorite place.

We have been eating at Bastien's for so many years, I don't remember how long its been. And while it hasn't been perfect every time, it has been oustanding most of the time and any time we had a problem, the promptly and graciously remedied it. I wonder if the disgruntled users thought to bring to the attention of the restaurant that they were not happy. As to the food, we've probably eaten every item on the menu including the salads and sandwiches, again prepared with quality food and attention to detail. We'll continue to be a "regular" at Bastien's and suggest you give them a try.

this place might not have the caliber of Ruth Chris (overpriced chain) or Morton's (very pricey chain) but its a great deal for the regular joe. I might not be able to afford to go to Morton's every time I want a good piece of beef, but this place isn't that far away and I can afford a very good steak dinner here more often. The sides might be a little overcooked or undercooked, but the steak has always been done right and the desserts are a nice way to end the meal.

We had a bachelor party there last week and the people at Bastien's were so accomodating despite some of the things that went on during the party. We had a private room upstairs. The food was great. There were 20 of us and every one found something they liked. They treated us like KINGS and while some of us had been there before, many of us had not. I recommend this place, both for food and service.

Based on previous reviews and ratings we went to Bastiens for dinner. I can't understand why this place is still open for business. Their food is greasy, and the steak had more fat than meat on it. I will never, ever return. This is one place City Search and its reveiwers have wrong!

We were unidecided about going to Bastiens, because of the reviews, some
were good and some were not, so good. We are SO glad we went. We had
good service & everything we tried was very tasty. We had the Fried Tomatoes,
the N.Y. Gorganzola Special and Parmesam Mashed Potatoes, and it all lived
up to the best reviews on the Web Site. We were too full from dinner, so we didnt
have dessert, but the wine was very reasonably priced & next time well save
room for dessert.

The steaks were good, not great. The green beans looked woeful though.

With all the "Best"s ratings, we expected a fancy place and thought we ventured to the wrong place ... especially after seeing the "Restrooms for customers only" sign on the door.

While decent, we thought the steaks were overpriced ... and we definitely weren't paying for the ambience.

This has got to be the worst suggestion I have ever seen. Bastien's the number one steak restaurant in Denver, it is not even in the top 25. Go there and look for a sub-par cut, as you could get a better cut at the local supermarket. What a joke. At least you get what you pay for at this place. Stick with a burger and a bud as it would be more in tune with the place.

We live about 15 miles away from Bastiens but go there for just a night out or special occations. The food is always goood and the staff is a pleasure to deal with. Never had a bad meal or had to send anything back for a redo. Have read some of the other bad reviews and wonder where the other Bastiens is that they are going to. Great portions always clean never had a server in anything but a good mood. Just plain good.
