Even the Vets don't like them!

by Lisa S.

During a conversation about pet stores, my vet told me that she has more sick pups from the Dog House than from any other place. My teenage daughter likes to visit the dogs while I shop at the Christmas Tree Shoppe. Having gone in there, I can tell you that it smells horrible, is filthy. When you walk in, the employees almost throw a dog at you. DO NOT buy there!

Would purchase another from the Dog House

by David L.

Purchased a Cairn from the Dog House last year. He was reasonably cared for under the circumstances. Yes, he needed to go to the vet for deworming and kennel cough, but that is to be expected when animals live in that type of community. The dog house reimbursed a portion of the vet fees. The best part is he did not live in a crate which made potty training much easier. I would purchase another one from them. Just make sure you take them to your vet to have them properly checked.

Do Not Give Them Anymore Business

by Meg K.

I would not recommend purchasing an animal from here we bought a puppy there 5 months ago and have had nothing but problems, first bronchitis and then we found out he has kidney disease which he will most likely die from within a year or two. The Glastonbury Vet misdiagnosed him, gave him the wrong dosage making him even more sick and then would not give us his medical records when we said we wanted to take him somewhere else. The Dog House has been completely unresponsive to our visits and phone calls for the supposed refund they give when a pet is found to have a congenital disease, so far we have not recieved a dime and spent over $2,000 in medical bills, nevermind the emotional distress. Save yourself the time and hearthache and buy it from a breeder in your area.

Please Help,

by Emily S.

I'm looking to buy a cockapoo from The Dog House, but I'm not sure if i should based on the comments below. I have never been there and the most research I've done so far is reading these comments. The cockapoo comes in on thursday after being checked by the vet. I live in East Longmeadow, MA, so should i waste a drive to Manchester, CT?

The Dog House is not evil.

by louie r.

I have heard awful things about pet stores like this but I've got to say, it didn't seem all that bad. We bought a little dog, one that was getting a little older, it took him time to get used to the house and the family when we got home but he seems to be settling in just fine. He was up-to -date with all of his medical needs and we took advantage of the free examination at the vet in Glastonbury, they were awesome, knowledgable, and took the time to give my family some training and care tips. Over all, I can't see too many faults specifically associated with this location but I do see an issue with the pet selling system in general. Pets are rarely treated as well as humans and until that happens, I'm not sure about my level of satisfaction with the system.

The Dog House

by Raymond J.

I went there and saw a West Highland White Terrier and he had the perfect Westie features and I loved him. He seemed sharp, witty and loving. Although I didn't know just how healthy he really was. The only reason why I didn't buy him was because I work and didn't want to leave him alone just in case he needed medical help god forbid he gets sick and I wouldn't be there for him. Otherwise I would've taken him home right then and there. This was back in mar. of this year. If anybody knows who bought this dog back in mar. of this year I'm just curious how he's doing. He (male) was sold before the month of Mar. was over. Born on Dec. 4th "08" Just wondering. Otherwise the place was not really that clean and don't really believe that health inspectors go in there at least once a week. I feel very bad for those dogs there; I got the impression they wanted out of there. On one hand all the dogs didn't look that bad while some did. But then again you can't really tell until you've had the dog for a while and see what the vet says, by then it's too late. It's a gamble. Of course you're better off going to a reputable dog breeder where you can see the parents on site.

The Dog House is The Worst Pet Shop In CT

by Scott M.

My girlfriend and I bought a yellow lab from the Dog House a few weeks back. The second day we had him, we had to hospitalize him because he was pooping blood, he had no appetite and was so lethargic that he had barely moved. When I called the Dog House and spoke to Tim their manager telling him he was going to have to take care of the bills, he said "yeah OK", and hung up the phone on me. Just a few days later, the pups kennel cough was so bad that he could barely breathe and again, he was not eating. Back to the hospital again and another $1500 vet bill. When I notified "Tim" about this he said he would have to see the bills for himself. He voiced no concern, has no idea on how to talk to customers, and runs the dirtiest and worst pet shop in Ct, probably in the country. I am ashamed of myself for not doing research upon making my initial purchase, but its one of those things that just happens. I feel when all is said and done, I am actually rescuing a dog from what would definitely have been euthanized from being brought up in a careless, disgusting place.

The Dog House Buys From Puppy Mills

by Morgan Q.

I bought a male shiba inu there about four years ago. Don't get me wrong he is an amazing dog, super smart, and had never had any health problems. But one day I decided to look at his pedigree and looked up his breeder (which if I remember correctly, the last name was bogarth or something) and I found out that he was from one of the worst puppymills in the country. There were so many complaints about that kennel and its conditions it just blew me away.

HORRIBLE PLACE

by SONIA L.

I went to THE DOG HOUSE looking for a puppy for my daughter. The first day i saw the puppy she had a little cough. I told one of the workers and he said just to be safe they would put her in the back on antibiotics. I visited her everyday and they said I could take her home a week later. A week later I went to pick her up and the vet cleared her to go home, 2 days later her cough was worse then ever and she wouldn't stop dry heaving. So I called them and told them what was going they told me to bring her in. I got nothing but attitude like it was my fault they sold me a sick dog. They gave me hell about wanting my money back. Finally they said fine and said i would get my check in the mail in 2 weeks. Yea right i got it a month later after me calling them every week asking for it and them lying saying they sent it out. I bought what was suppose to be a Australian shepherd from this place. Everywhere i brought the puppy everyone said it looked like a border collie

Goldent Retriever?? same one?

by Ruth N.

We goofed & purchased our puppy there on Friday. Afterwards I learned about puppy mills & researched to find the previous owner was a puppy mill. Taking puppy today to vet. Our Schnoodle (10 yrs old), which my mom owns now due to his age & our family situation change. Is a great dog. We bought him at a store in West Hartford or there abouts. He never was sick . . . so we reasoned why not try again. I'll update at to the health of this puppy latter. p.s. What do we do once we have a dog?? The store won't take it back, so do we 'give it up' or 'put it down' for being a 'mill' puppy?? A better answer is CHANGE THE LAWS & put these places out of business. (oh, he was listed as having an irritated neck & needed washing every day for the irritation. I wonder if this is the same puppy the previous writer saw with a two tight collar?? I think I'll have to talk with my vet about how to walk him because he runs beside us but on a leash lays down???

Collar was growing into the neck of a puppy

by Colleen B.

Do not get puppies from here. My sister and I went to go to see the puppies and found adorable golden retriever. We noticed upon picking up the dog that the collar on the dog was too tight. We then lifted up her neck and noticed the collar was growing into the neck of the poor golden retriever pup. WE IMMEDIATELY had an employee cut the collar off. We proceeded to tell the manager that this kind of treatment of puppies is unacceptable and ignorant. Needless to say we contact the Humane Society. I only hope that the rest of the puppies do not have this problem as well.

Papillon & Japanese Chin

by Lori M.

Got my papillon in 5/04 and my Japanese Chin 12/04. They are great companions for each other and fantastic additions to the family. Very satisfied with the Dog House in Manchester CT.My mom bought a miniature schnauzer from a BREEDER and had a horrible experience. She thought she was buying a puppy, then when she brought the "puppy" home it went into heat.... needless to say this was no puppy. Had a difficult time getting half her money back. She ended up keeping the dog, thinking she was rescuing it after all.

DO NOT BUY FROM PET STORES

by Karen M.

George V. is a moron. You are uneducated and ignorant. Animals that come from shelters are healthier than animals from pet stores. If he knew anything about most shelters, he would know that the shelters will make sure the dog does not have worms, kennel cough and other diseases. I had fostered for the humane society before adopting my dog and these dogs were temperament tested and healthy. There are a select few dogs that will come from homes where they purchased the dog from a pet store and it happened to be ill. The dogs are ill because they come from puppy mills. These dogs from puppy mills are inbred and sick, due to the horrible living conditions they are in. Do some research!! Oprah had an entire show based around puppy mills. The videos show the condition of these animals, and it is terrible. Puppy mills should be shut down. If people keep buying from pet stores there will still be a demand for these animals from puppy mills. I cannot believe someone said something about warranties. These dogs are not merchandise retailers sell; they are living beautiful creatures- they are family members!!

It's a Gamble Either Way

by laurie s.

I have purchased a pure-bred German shepherd from a breeder who bred for "health" in Rhode Island years back and I have purchased the same from The Dog House in January. The shepherd from the breeder died before the age of 4 from lymphoma, and the breeder didn't want to know about it when I called to tell her. The shepherd from The Dog House is healthy, thus far. (I was told by my vet that I got lucky). The best option, of course, which I also did 9 years ago, is rescue a dog from the pound that cost me $5; and though not a pure-bred, has given my family much joy...and still is. (We were lucky) The new puppy from The Dog House and my "pound puppy" love each-other and we love them both. I agree that you should rescue, if that's an option, but find the adoption process lengthy and expensive now. It's easier to walk into a pet shop and pick up a pup on the spot rather than make appointment after appointment and drive around the state to "look" at dogs that perhaps come with much baggage ....like medical problems, abuse and behavioural problems that can't be corrected. I like to start with a clean slate or at least know what I'm in for. It's a gamble, either way.

wow you guys are sad

by george v.

seriously, if you have such a big problem with pet stores, DON'T BUY FROM THEM. don't force your beliefs on others. it is impossible to rescue a dog that isn't sick anyway. they all need to be rescued b/c they are sick or disabled. pet store is the ONLY PLACE they have good dogs...

Not really all that bad

by Anyonomous A.

I told myself that I would never get a dog from a pet shop but when I walked in and saw that little playful shiba inu, I couldn't resist. We bought the pup and never had any problems with him. He is the best dog ever. We actually go back often and see if there are any others that just have to come back home with us.

Sick Puppies

by jen s.

I am employed at a vet hospital and I cannot tell you how many sick puppies we have had brought in to our facility that people have bought from the dog house. VERY rarely do we see puppies, from the dog house or any other pet store that are not sick. Any pet store you go to a large majority of the animals are going to be sick due to in-breeding and overcrowding at the puppy mills, where these puppies are coming from. I cannot express to you how important is to not buy from pet stores. You are supporting a terrible business where the parents of these puppies are being tortured, abused and living in filth. Please the next time you are looking in to adding a new addition to your family, look into rescuing one, from the humane society or another animal rescue organization. They even have puppies available all the time look on petfinder.com. PLEASE :) There is no need for more than 5 million animals a year to be killed, simply because there arent enough homes, please consider just helping one! DONT GO TO A PET STORE, especially the dog house.

RESCUE A PUP!

by Anonymous

We just purchased one of those cute pups from the Dog House Manchester. We view it as we rescued the pup. We love animals and want to raise our kids with the same love for animals. Whether it be a breeder or a shop, it is all about money or all pets would be free. We purchased a dog from a breeder in the past and had all sorts of problems including seizures. But that dog was part of our family and loved it very much. You take the risk when getting a pet no matter where you get it. Keep in mind, its not the poor pet's fault, so far as I am concerned if I can rescue a pet and give it a loving home, that is what I will do. Our pup from the Dog House is happy and healthy to date.

DON'T BUY FROM PET SHOPS!

by R S.

Every time you buy a puppy from a pet store, you make room for another one from a puppy mill. You are not saving anyone, you are encouraging more breeding in pet mills.

Find a breeder, look at the mother and father to see if there are any behavioral problems or health issues.

You don't know what you're getting from a pet store. In all likelihood the puppies have come from a puppy mill. PLEASE do not encourage more puppy mill breeding b buying from pet stores.

Do your homework. Go to a breeder.

This is my opinion, for what it's worth, after many years of happy dog ownership. I learned my lesson by purchasing one puppy from a pet store.... never never again.

Horrible!!!!

by Anonymous

I recently went to the dog house while in the area of Manchester. All of the puppies were full of feces - some appeared to be suffering from possible mange or some other parasite. The german Shepherd that I took out was extremely skittish, clearly already sufffering from behavioral issues, probally a result of bad breeding, or the torturing of a puppy mill. I hate all stores that sell live animals, but at least some other pet stores are clean, presentable, and the pets are happy and healthy, The Dog House is disgusting, smells horrible, and even the dogs in "day care" look miserable. I would NEVER leave my dogs there, where i noticed that they were not supervised, and there was feces and urine piling up in the "play area".

Annie Update

by Anonymous

I posted as "Never Again"(no exclamation marks), several comments below. Yesterday, I brought my little Annie back to the vet... She was wheezing and coughing again. Thank goodness, she only has a reaction to the cold air. You see, her trachea and bronchi are scarred from the illness she suffered. The cold air irritated the scarring and caused a burning sensation and hence the coughing. Even though she has somewhat recovered, my vet says that she will always have the scars. So, even if your puppy seems healthy when you buy it, beware. Check the paper work for collar numbers when you're looking. If there is more than one, seriously question the staff. And just for the heck of it, ask to see what's behind that "Employees Only" door. You'd be disgusted by the number of sick pups back there, as well as the deplorable conditions.

Do your research!

by Anonymous

My sister fell in love with a Schnoodle she found at The Dog House back in December. I went to see the cute little fluff ball with her and although it wasn't the worst pet shop I have been in, it certainly wasn't the best. It does smell like dog which is to be expected, I wouldn't call it disgusting. The people seemed friendly, but upon having a conversation with one guy that worked there I realized that he was very nervous and not very truthful. Being a dog owner myself I questioned some of the treatments the dog had listed in his file. I was told that they were just scheduled "puppy shots" when they were in fact treatments for kennel cough. When I challenged him on it he said the dog simply had a "runny nose". We were told the vet was just there that very day and the puppy was in good health. Despite all this we purchased the puppy, I couldn't leave him there! The next day we brought him to Glastonbury Vet for a check up, that ended up costing $218.00. Turns out the puppy had parasites (Giardia) and was severely dehydrated. That was in early December, we just received a check for $84 last week. When we called The Dog House to inquire where the other $134 was we were told that the Giardia was not covered! The puppy is doing ok, although he has boughts of diarrhea and vomiting which is caused by the parasite that "wasn't covered". I also would NOT recommend Glastonbury Vet AT ALL! What is all boils down to is do not step foot in any pet shop, I believe The Dog House represents all pet stores - they are out for the money not the love of animals. Research and find a reputable breeder, it's the best way to get a puppy!!

NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymous

I bought my Scottish Terrier at the Dog House in Jan of 2008. They assured me that he was in perfect health, meaning he already had kennel cough and had been treated. I brought him home and the first night he had the bloodiest stool I had ever seen. I immediately made an appointment with their recommened vet in Glastonbury. (which I also don't recommend). They told me he had giardia and put him on antibiotics. After about a week my puppy showed no improvement so I brought him back. Another round of medicine was administered but still no improvement. I switched to Twin City in Newington and they found he had kennel cough, which the Glastonbury vet had overlooked, and still had a bad case of giardia. I sent in my bills from Glastonbury and have yet to be reimbursed by the Dog House. The employees at the Dog House may look seemingly innocuous but they are absolutely clueless when it comes to the proper care of puppies. They tell you what you want to hear...don't be foolish enough to believe it like I was. If we all stop buying puppies from their and make enough complaints, the place may be put on probation with the prospects of closing. Let's unite and but this incompetent place out of buisness! p.s. I don't recommend the Glastonbury vet.

Mixed Feelings

by Anonymous

I decided to buy my fiancee the dog he has been wanting forever for Christmas. So, after reading a million reviews in both directions for and against the Dog House. I had to check it out myself. I went in on Dec 15. I did not think it was necessary disgusting, it just smelled like dogs--which is to be expected when your are housing 30+. At first this cute little golden retriever caught my attention, but as I talked to the associates about my lifestyle they pointed me to a different direction --a male Keeshond (aka my new best friend). The associates talked to me about what to expect and really helped me come to an informed decision. So, although I do not particularly like the idea of a pet store I had decided the fluff ball husky/german shepherd/spitzz combo known as a Keeshond was for me. I was given a whole packet of things about Jack (my new puppy) including reg papers, vet records, microchip reg, pedigree, breeder info ect. So after reading through this packet, 2 things concerned me--First, Jack was over 16 wks old and had been at the pet store for 8 weeks--He had developed a bit of kennel cough, but that was expected and wasnt really a huge concern. 2ndly my poor baby had previously had Giardia, therefore noone was allowed to buy him for the 8 weeks he was there. Knowing that my puppy would need some immediate care the staff gave me an EXTREMELY discounted price and even refunded my vet bills a week later. They gave me free food, toys, ect. At six months old Jack is the best puppy I could have ever asked for. He has become a huge part of our family and I really have to thank the Dog House because they took the time to help me find the dog that was right for us. I know that some people have had a bad experience with the Dog House, but I promise you there are just as many who have had good experiences too.

I think its important to go there and see for yourself. Talk with the staff, some of them actually know a thing or two.

+++Having the name of Jack's breeder in Kansas, I looked her up and decided to give her a call. To my suprise she was a very nice lady who took the time out to discuss the specifics of my puppy with me. She sent me pics of my puppy as a real little baby! She even invited us to come see her facility and I may just take her up on the offer one day. I also was able to find her registered with the a popular Keeshond club. I cant really say for sure if shes operating a puppy mill or not, but I will let everyone know if i go visit!

I love how some of you are proud of your puppy mill mutts.

by Stina B.

It is absolutely sickening how ignorant many of you are. Are you aware that, by purchasing that cute little puppy, you have supported a very terrible business? Don't know what a puppy mill is? Do a little research. Google the words "puppy mill" and see what you find. You'll be absolutely shocked and will NEVER buy from a pet store again. At least, I can only hope you will. Only someone with absolutely no heart could support this disgusting industry. Go to a shelter or REPUTABLE breeder that does OFA hips, eye checks, showing, and working. Find someone who RESPECTS the breeds and dogs they have, not uses them for a profit.

Long term sickly pug

by Anonymous

I bought my pug in 2001 from the dog house. First I was told she was AKC then I found out she was ACA. She has constant allergies, hip dysplasia and pigmantary keratitis. Now she has kidney stones and is probably heading for surgery. I called the Dog house several times about the registration and was told I did not understand what I was talking about to this day I have never received any registration papers for either. I have spent more in vet bills than my monthly mortgage at times. Allergy, hip and pigmantary keratitis are hereditary problems. Think twice before you buy at any pet store. My second pug came from a home, I checked out their vet records, AKC records and past references and it made the difference in her health.

Never Again

by Anonymous

I bought my beautiful Blue Merle Sheltie from The Dog House in April of 2007. The day I went to pick her up, I was told she had Giardia (an intestinal parasite), and that they needed to hold her for another week. The NEW "take-home"day, I get a call that Annie (the pup) has a cough. Another 10 days later, I am finally able to take her home. That lasted two days. Day 1, I take her to my vet, and she has a little cough still. They put her on antibiotics. The very next day, she is much, much worse. I rush her back to the vet, and they tell me she is in CRITICAL CONDITION, with severe respiratory failure, and will not survive unless I take her to the emergency vet hospital in W. Htfd. So, I rush her over there. They immediately put her in an oxygen tent, and put an IV in her to get fluids and antibiotics into her. They also nebulize her. Poor, poor little puppy. I call The Dog House on my way back home. Well guess what? They wont cover any emergency expenses from any vet but their own. I have to bring her to their vet, and sign her back over to the Dog house. So off I go, back to W. Htfd. I have to sign her out, and take her back out to the car, her IV still attached to her little leg. When I get to Glastonbury, they take one look at her and give her a 20% chance of survival. AND they wont let me call to check on her, as she is no longer my "property". One of the staff at the Dog House was quite sympathetic, and would give me updates on Annie when I would call, which was several times a week. Anyway, after spending a couple of weeks at the hospital, and then another week or so in that nasty "Employees Only" room (which is where they keep all the sick dogs... the smell coming from there is disgusting), I get to take her home. I am not reimbursed for the almost eight hundred in vet bills, but I do get to buy her back for the "bargain" price of three hundred. So, for two hundred fiftyMORE than her original price (the vet bills plus the new price), I get to take home a weak, sickly little pup, with less of a warranty than originally offered. Now, over 6 months later, she is much better. She tires more easily than my other dog,but she is the happiest little dog I've ever seen. Worth it? Yes, just this once. But I tell everyone I know not to waste their time or money on a pup from The Dog House. There are cheaper ways of getting your heart broken.

Promoting animal cruelty

by Anonymous

The one time I went to The Dog House, I found dogs in overcrowded kennels without water and rolling in there own waste. I was deeply saddened by what I saw.

Anyone who purchases a dog from a dog store, especially this one, is not "saving" or "helping" a dog. Purchasing a dog from this type of place promotes dog abuse because that one dog just "saved" will be replaced by another tormented puppy mill dog. Giving these types of stores money promotes and adds to the abuse of animals.

If no one bought their dogs from puppy stores, they would go out of business and puppy mills would cease to exist.

My puppy came from The Dog House

by robert f.

I have read all of the good and bad stories. My story is a good one. I purchased my female English Springer Spaniel in June 2007. I was totally unaware of the bad publicity that The Dog House had received. All I knew was that I had visited TDH on numerous occasions over the past few years and on this particular occasion I was out to purchase a healthy puppy. The gentlemen who assisted me was very pleasant, very helpful and I was able to make this precious purchase without any difficulty. I received all of the pedigree paperwork including very specific information about the Kansas breeder from which this puppy came, the minor health issues this puppy was treated for ...along with a separate document outlining my rights should this puppy be or become ill after I got her home. My next stop was to my local vet. She examined "Grace" and gave her a clean bill of health. Maybe it's just me, but in my opinion ...perhaps the hardest business that anyone could go into is a retail pet shop selling puppies. I'm so sorry for those who made a puppy purchase in good faith and ended up with a sick puppy ...but from my perspective, I would be pleased to recommend my friends to TDH ...with one caveat - I would tell them about all this bad publicity.

The Overcrowded Dog House

by Anonymous

I visited the store and was very upset at what I saw. There were too many puppies in each enclosure and the floor had lots of doggie poo on it. There was only one clerk there and he was outside the building most of the time I was there. The place smelled really bad! The puppies were starved for attention and when I was allowed to pet them, they were dirty and smelly. I held several of the puppies and they were afraid and overwhelmed by the numerous puppies in each area. Several of the smaller ones were picked on and not happy at all. I was very upset at the condition of this store. I wanted to take all of them out of there...

dont be fooled jessica below works at the dog house please go to channel 3 news CT and type in dog house read the story they did it is all true, i have 4200.00 in vet bills for a giardia infected puppy which infected or older dog we bought this puppy at the attleboro store which means the DOG HOUSE is selling sick dogs at both stores in mass and CT the place Needs to be shut down they are selling infectious diseases (Giardia, and many others)
which are contagious to humans and other dogs"

I have filed a complaint against there vets license for signing off on sick dogs and releasing them to the public.

if this has happened to you file a case in claims court against the owners and get your vet bills reimbursed it is your right."

I applaud the Channel 3 news team for running this story the public needs to be educated about this place.

For Sick and near death Puppies that will cost you thousands!

About The Dog House, and to Kary L who posted below me.

by Jessica R.

For you to admit that you have never even stepped foot in The Dog House, or had a personal experience with this company, and make complete false assumptions based on a one-sided newscast with false information is not only rediculous, it is down-right disgusting. I have purchased two dogs from this facility, and attend their doggie daycare on a regular basis These are the nicest, most caring and compassionate people you could ever meet. Their dog's and puppies are well cared for, yet you say they are housed in 'deplorable' conditions. Oh, that's right. You wouldn't really know, you've never been to The Dog House. I can't even begin to pick apart your other false assumptions, about The FOg House being greedy, and 'unheartfelt', other than to say this is simply not true. I can only wish that people as ignorant as yourself can learn to see the whole picture, and not base their entire beliefs from one accusation. The Dog House has many, many happy and satisfied customers, me being one of them.

Saw the "2nd" disappointing report on Channel 3 this morning...

by Kary L.

I have never purchased any animal from The Dog House in Manchester, CT, nor will I EVER!!!! My husband and I had a similar "sick dog" situation with a dog that we had purchased from another pet store in CT, and THANKFULLY, our dog turned out OK after "numerous" vet visits and expensive bills!!! THANKFULLY, THIS PET STORE IS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS, and hopefully, The Dog House will close its doors too for selling sick animals to people, and then not giving a damn about what happens to these animals and their owners after they step foot outside the door!!!! I am disgusted that this facility is in business, and hopefully after the Television news publicity of their unheartfelt attitude and deplorable conditions that these animals are forced to live in that makes them deathly sick, "The Dog House" will have to close its doors!!!! I will make sure that I tell EVERYONE I know to NEVER EVER step foot inside this greedy facility that only cares about $ and not about the animals they sell that are SICK and the poor people they sell these animals to, and cannot even do the decent thing and take resposibility for their actions and help the people by refunding their money, offer to pay their vet bills, etcetera.....Instead, they hang up on them, avoid their calls, and so on and so forth!!!! People like the ones who own / run "The Dog House" should not be allowed to run a pet store, or even be around animals for that matter!!!! You make me sick, and the saying "What comes around, goes around" is SO VERY TRUE!!!! You will get "yours", don't you worry!!!! You all at the "Dog House" ought to be so very ashamed of yourselves!!! I am just so glad that all of these people that you screwed over decided to fight you for what is right, and selling sick dogs or any kind of animal is not only wrong, it is CRUEL, to both the animal's and these families!!!! If you have ANY humanity in you what so ever, why don't you start doing the "RIGHT" thing, if you even know what the "right thing" is!!!! You are a disgrace to mankind and to animalkind, for your greedy, disgusting, selfish ways!!! I would love to see your doors, and all the other pet stores just like you be shut down forever, and I truly hope that they someday soon will be!!!!!

by Melissa B.

I'm not sure if my previous post went through so anyway I was very happy with my experience there every time I went there. My new puppy is thriving and our family is complete. Thank you to everyone at the dog house who offered their advise and experience to us. I'll be back in the future to purchase our puppy a friend!

Don't give love a bad name

by Anonymous

The Doghouse is a pet-friendly facility. The people that work there now really do care about the best interest of the puppies. The health warranty they extend is the best around, and they do as much as possible to work with their customers.

Puppies are babies! If you are to take a puppy home, do just that! Take it home. Let it stay in your house for a while! Don't take it to PetSmart and let all your friends come trapsing over to check out the new pup. Don't take him to every relative's house, out on long walks, and to the dog parks. They are still building their immune system and need to be kept at home. Puppies do need to have social interactions and be exposed to new things, but it is advisable to keep it low key until about 4 months old, or until their last round of Parvo/distemper vaccines.

While I believe rescuing a pup is noble, sometimes it is not always feasible. Rescue groups make it very difficult to even obtain a dog or puppy now. They require a hefty deposit on a dog that they may not even approve for your home. They often require puppies as early as 8 weeks to be spayed. This is not only inhumane, it is medically dangerous and can cause life-long bladder issues. I am tired of rescue groups feeling they are "holier than thou" and feel they are the only people responsible enough to make life altering decisions with their dogs and puppies.

My advise is to do some breed research BEFORE you go into the Doghouse or any pet facility. Knowing the breed that may work best for you and your lifestyle is key. If you do not know what breed would be best for you, ask the people that work at the Doghouse, or any pet facility. Most of these people have been in the business for years and have knowledge and insight.

Kennel Cough

by Anonymous

This is in regards to the post before me. We purchased our second puppy from the dog house on the 10th of April, Cairn Terrier, and he was fine when we brought him in for his initial checkup. The very next day, I woke to find him with a bad cough and a green runny nose. I immediatly took him to the vet that day and he was diagnosed with Kennel cough and upper respitory infection. He was put on antibiotics for 10 days, and my vet also prescribed my current dog with a supplement that helped her not get the infection as well. Since then, he has been back to the vet for his shots and is in WONDERFUL health. He is doing GREAT! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, but I am so thankful that my new pup didn't get NEARLY as sick as he could have! The first dog we got from there has ALWAYS been great. (except an allergic reaction to a lyme disease vaccination) Anyways, we submitted our forms and we are being reimbursed for the vet bills that we aquired for the illness visit as well as the meds. I'm satisfied because thankfully I have 2 healthy pups!

Rude

by Anonymous

I was in The Dog House the other day, and one of the male employees was doing his best to scare away customers.. He was yelling at the other employees there, and was acting like he was intoxicated. He was stumbling around, and when people asked to see pups, I watched as he almost dropped a German Shepard pup. He was passing the dog to the customers while looking in the opposite direction... one hand under the dogs belly while he was swaying and doing more barking than any of the dogs in the place. Then he was outside on the phone, just outside the entry door, swearing at another employee. Real nice....

LOVE MY PUPS!

by Anonymous

As much as I had ALWAYS said I would NEVER buy a dog from a puppy store, sometimes you can't help but to fall in love with these things! My fiancee and I bought our first puppy from here, and she is honestly the BEST pup in the world! Some say this place is over priced, but ifr you research these breeds of dogs, you will find that mostly anywhere you go, whether from a breeder or a dog store, you are paying about the same. I know people have mixed feelings about this place and dog stores in general, but I would definetly have to recommend this shop. We loved our pooch so much, we just bought another one. As with any place, they have their guarentees, and I have talked to friends of mine, a couple whos pups DID have a little bit of a health problem at first, and the Dog House was VERY responsive, they STILL have their dog, and the Dog House took care of the vet bills not only for the dog but also for their other dog with no questions asked! Not to mention, I myself, noticed a puppy with a slightly runny nose, and they immediatly removed the puppy from the area where the rest of the pups were to avoid any possibilities of spreading the respitory infection, (and YES I did check back with that certain pup, and he is okay now)
The ONLY con I have found with this shop, is the pushiness of their staff. I know they just want to get these pups in a good home, but they can sometimes be overwhelming and right on top of you! Other than that, I really love mym babies I purchased from here!

Over priced puppies

by Anonymous

Please if you are looking to adopt a dog do not go here. There are so many loving puppies and dogs in connecticut shelters and the humane society. We got our little cuddlebug from the humane society and we could not love him more. He's like a member of our family! When I think of all the little dogs who need loving homes in shelters, it makes me want to cry. Please consider adopting a shelter dog!

by Kim C.

I have personally bought five puppies from this store and have never had a problem with any of them.If i had more room to add to my family of wonderful pets then i would definately go back to this store again. The staff was more then helpful and they did all they could to match me up with the right puppy to fit my life style..

DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM HERE

by Lorin M.

My puppy was not only overpriced, but had PARVO. When brought to the Vet, the Dr. told me that another puppy was just brought to them a week before with the same disease and that puppy was also purchased from The Dog House. I had to return my new puppy within the first seven days of taking her home. This is heartbreaking. After returning her, The Dog house said that they will treat her according to the 14-day guaruntee. They also said that I could buy her back after treatment was complete. However, they will not let me gain access to my puppy's well-being during treatment. This is ridiculous. Now I am am afraid they are not even going to treat her (because treatment is expensive), and just put her to sleep. This store has broken mine and my family's heart right before Christmas. PS Go to Yahoo and do a search on this place and you'll see I am not the only one who has had multiple problems! Hope this saves a family some heartache!

Don't Bother

by Jeremy F.

While searching for a puppy with my girlfriend and son, we were told to look at "The Dog House", however, to be careful because the puppies that have been sold there have been known to have kennel cough. Without much consideration we went anyways, but to my amazement we never even got that far into the process to inquire about that. There were three associates working there and after viewing the puppies for almost one half hour, we still had received no service. When we finally inquired about some of the puppies we were informed that many had been put on deposit or hold. We then asked which ones were available but only to recieve the same response. It was as if I was not important enough to spend my hundreds of dollars on one of their dogs, and their conversation of drinking and partying was much more enlightening then my business. I would never recomend this place to anyone I know, and my business will certainly be going elsewhere. The saddest part of the whole ordeal, is now one of those puppies locked up in that kennel will not be coming home with me, but instead sleeping on the cold slab on cement it was displayed on.

PROS: None
CONS: Horrible Customer Service, Unsanitary conditions

great place for boarding dogs!

by keri b. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 12,572

this place is great for dog boarding. they keep the dogs out in a play area all day and have a staff person with the dogs. they don't crate the dogs until pretty late and they don't let dogs have access to each other's toys. with a dog that gets very sick when she eats rawhide, this is very important to us and has been a problem at other places. the people at the dog house are great with the dogs! and they have a great selection of puppies for sale!
