Sal's was an institution when on Boston Post Road, and now in its modern new quarters on Spencer Plain Road (exit 66 off 95), it has much nicer dining and waiting areas.

Sal's specializes in the basics -- good pastas and sauces, pizza, and subs. On the weekends, expect specials, frequent fish or seafood dinners. Everything is well prepared, and the portions are large -- my girlfriend and I frequently order one entre and a Caesar salad, and an order of their outrageously good garlic bread with parmesan cheese. I'm very partial to their pasta puttenesca -- spicy with thick pieces of tomato and black olives. The wine list isn't long, but very nicely priced. Their various eggplant dishes are also to be recommended -- especially the rollatini.

The new location has a bar at which you can order drinks and wine, and those high small tables and stools at which you can wait, because Sal's doesn't take reservations, except for parties of 6 or more. Friday and Saturday evenings around 7PM can be hectic, but by 9PM, late diners rarely have a wait.

Don't expect high cuisine or high prices at Sal's -- prices for most entres run about $10-13. This is where you go when you're hungry for tasty food and you don't feel like spending a lot of money or getting dressed up.
