I think the food at Edge Of The Woods is very yummy but it is overpriced.
The salad bar is great, the hot food and soups are always delicious and inventive.
Having said that there is the biggest cast of pretentious weirdos assembled under one roof there that I have seen in a while.
There is MR. SHORTS, this older guy who comes trotting in wearing shorts in the dead of winter. There is "The Locksmith & His Wife" who always talk loud enough for the whole place to hear them. there is "Hershall The Consultant" who holds court in the dining area and expounds hot air and that is only the tip of the iceberg.
The crew seems to change on a weekly basis too. The only place in New Haven with an even BIGGER cast of pretentious weirdos is Claire's Cornercopia....although I love their food too!

The good thing about the store is the vitamin/personal products section. There is usually a knowledgeable employee willing to help you figure out what exactly you are looking for. The bad part is once you buy something the next time you go there they are usually out of the product and it usually will take them a couple of weeks or more to restock. They need a better handle on the inventory. As far as the hot foods, I have never tried them. But the veggies, etc always look fresh.

Edge of the Woods is a great health food store! It has a wide varitey of organic/healthly foods at reasonable prices. My mother and I usually go there to buy organic seeds and dried fruit. This place also sells food where you can sit and eat. THe upper level sells organic vitamins, and body products. Overall, a great health food store.

If you have ever had to cook for someone with a gluten allergy, it will literally take you all day long. Edge of the Woods has gluten free foods and mixes for foods typically denied to a person with gluten problems, such as pizza, lasagna, and even a brownie mix that tastes pretty good. I cannot say I would like the food here if someone did not have a health problem, but if you are allergic to dairy, gluten, are diabetic or are avoiding or supplementing with certain foods that are hard to buy, this is one of the more conveinent grocery stores and pretty good prices for hard to find items.

The health food store part of Edge of the Woods is pretty big and has a good selection of the stuff you would expect from a health food store, including a lot of good beverages and frozen desserts. As far as I can tell, the store is all-vegetarian, which is uncommon among health food stores. They also have a large section upstairs devoted to vitamins. The other downstairs part of the store has a hot food buffet, salad bar, prepared foods counter, sandwich/smoothie counter, and bakery, along with a seating area (there is also more seating upstairs). The bakery has some excellent stuff, but it's not all vegan. The hot food buffet usually ends up being pretty cheap, but if you go there too often you will get sick of the selection because they don't seem to rotate that many different dishes. My one big issue with this store is that I have had multiple problems with hair in my food and rude staff members that have caused me to stop eating there.

PROS: all-vegetarian, good selection, bakery, cheap hot food
CONS: hair in hot food

As a health food store, this place has a good selection, especially of ice cream. I appreciate that there seems to be only vegetarian and vegan food available. The bakery has some great selections, including an amazing vegan streudel. The hot food section is so-so. It is quite inexpensive and sometimes has good choices, such as the apple cobbler and seitan steak, but many of the options are gross things like cheezy cauliflower. The beef I have with this place is that my friends and I have found hair in our food multiple times. The one time we complained, the employee was incredibly rude and did not care, although once we went to the manager we got our money back. So watch out.

PROS: selection, bakery, cheap hot food
CONS: unsanitary food preparation conditions
