We were very lucky to hear about Tolland Cooperative Preschool's 5-year-old program by word of mouth -- it turned out to be the perfect alternative for him. The curriculum was age appropriate for young fives, and the teacher is wonderful. And since it is a cooperative school, I was able to observe his progress while helping out in the classroom from time to time. The next year we sent our younger son to the 3-year-old program at the co-op, and have been very happy with his experience also.
